Trial P-26 (fail): the CLI's sandbox limits connections, but a tool reads the parent's environment - #301
Conversation
… sandbox hide the parent's environment and limit connections? tools/trial_p26_sandbox.sh follows tools/trial_p13_cli.sh as issue 178 hardened it: the same refusals of OUT and CONFIG_DIR, the CLI started with env -i, the pinned version asked before and after, and of each Task's answer only the fields it names kept. It asks one Task twice, under the sandbox settings a Run would be given (on, failing if it cannot start, no command let out, one allowed host): once with the sandbox alone and once with the CLI's scrub of credential names as well. The model has the shell alone, allowed one command, `sh ./probe.sh`, the script's own probe. The CLI holds two fresh markers, one under a name nothing reads and one under ANTHROPIC_CUSTOM_HEADERS, a name on the scrub's list, as the stand-in for the model credential. The probe records the environment its shell holds and that of each process above it up to the CLI, never the script that started it; a write outside its directory; and the allowed and denied hosts fetched through the sandbox's proxy and around it. The script asks only whether each marker was seen, and keeps curl's exit codes and HTTP statuses. No marker and none of the model's text reaches OUT. The pass condition is at the script's top with its runbook. SandboxTrial runs it against a stand-in CLI, curl and ps; six mutants each fail one of its tests. …nd runs A fresh security review before the Maintainer runs it found one blocker and three majors. - The probe read its stop, the outside file and the hosts from the environment the sandbox is meant to hide: hidden, the walk would read past the CLI into the script and the Maintainer's shell. The values are now written into each Task's copy of the probe, and a probe that knows no stop reads its own process alone. - autoAllowBashIfSandboxed let any sandboxed command run, not only `sh ./probe.sh`. It is off. - A fetch line under any name reached checked.json. Only the probe's five names are read, and an ancestors record longer than the probe writes is dropped. - The CLI's shell tool loads the Maintainer's bash rc files: the runbook has him check them, and the script deletes the shell snapshots the run leaves under CONFIG_DIR and counts them. And the minors: the markers reach the check on stdin; the pass condition names the Task's exit and error and a non-empty environment record, as the verdict does; the scratch directory's trap is set before any refusal; a failed login leaves checked.json; each fetch keeps the proxy's CONNECT answer. SandboxTrial gains tests for each, and eleven mutants each fail one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… pin P-13 moves to Conflict in tools/mutants.py: P-26's mutants and P-44's lane mutants, both kept. The pin moves with the re-pin (trials/p-13-repin-2-1-306): the installer pruned 2.1.302, and the Maintainer chose to re-pin by a run of P-13 at 2.1.306, then run P-26 on that build. …he parent's environment The Maintainer ran tools/trial_p26_sandbox.sh at 2.1.306 on 2026-10-21. In both configurations, the sandbox alone and with the CLI's scrub, the sandbox limited connections: the allowed host answered through its proxy, the denied host was refused at CONNECT (403), neither was reached around the proxy, and a write outside the work directory was refused. But the tool's shell held the parent's environment: the marker under a name nothing reads in both, and the marker under a name on the CLI's credential list without the scrub; the scrub took out that name alone. A process above the tool was not read: ps exited 126 in the sandbox, on macOS; Linux's /proc was not tried. So no configuration both hides and limits, and the verdict is fail. Section 6's row records it, and section 4.9's row says the first and third layers carry the weight: a Run sets the scrub, holds its credential under a name the scrub lists, and holds nothing else secret in its environment. A test computes the fail from the script's own record. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Main gained the re-pin (#291), whose test holds this script's PIN to 2.1.306 with the others. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d not try A fresh review with a security pass: section 4.9 claimed the scrub keeps out every listed name and added a rule no check holds; it now says one listed name was tried, the model credential's own name, a Linux runner's /proc and the configuration's files were not, and that until P-26 passes no Run has a shell or network tool, as issue 188 asks. Section 6 and the fixture say the listed marker went and the unlisted stayed, three lines shorter, and that the sandbox would not run ps. The test recomputes each part from what the probe left. …nner reads the stand-in ps as a Mac does On the runner the probe found /proc/PID/environ readable and read the real processes, never the stand-in ps, so two SandboxTrial tests failed there alone. The stand-in CLI, and the test that runs the probe by itself, point the probe's /proc at a path that does not exist; the script the Maintainer runs is unchanged. …and a mutant holds that clause of the verdict No stand-in network answered the denied host through the proxy while its bypass stayed blocked, so dropping that clause from "connections limited" changed no verdict. The stand-in curl's "proxied" mode does that, a row of the matrix expects it to fail, and a mutant removes the clause. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…ide the sandbox, so that (b) asks of connections and not names alone Around the proxy both fetches failed at the name lookup (curl exit 6), which shows the sandbox refuses to look a name up, not that it refuses a connection. The script now looks the denied host's address up with dig, outside the sandbox, refuses if it finds none, and the probe fetches it with --noproxy and --resolve; connections_limited requires that fetch unanswered. (b) is amended for the next run with a dated note; the first run failed on (a), which the addition does not change. The design rows say the connections were limited by name, and an address was not tried. A stand-in dig, an "address" network mode, a refusal and three mutants hold it. …CONFIG_DIR of its own, so the suite fits the runner's timeout The checks job was cancelled at its 15-minute timeout with the tests still running; other pull requests' runs take 11 to 14.5 minutes. The matrix ran the script fourteen times one after another, 17 s here; four at a time it takes 6 s, and each run has its own OUT and CONFIG_DIR. Trial P-26, by #188: can the model CLI's sandbox stop a tool reading the parent process's environment, and limit where it connects? It limits connections, but it does not hide the environment. The trial fails.
How it ran
The Maintainer ran
tools/trial_p26_sandbox.shat 2.1.306 at his own terminal on 2026-10-21, on the login of decision 0033. The script asks one Task twice under the sandbox settings a Run would be given:The model had the shell alone, allowed one command: the script's own probe. The CLI held two fresh markers, one under a name nothing reads and one under
ANTHROPIC_CUSTOM_HEADERS, a name on the CLI's credential list. Neither value is written anywhere. What it showed
CLAUDE_CODE_SUBPROCESS_ENV_SCRUB=1)psps(exit 126)So connections are limited, but the sandbox passes the CLI's environment to the tool. With the scrub, the listed marker was gone and the unlisted one stayed. Not tried: the model credential's own name (planting it would replace the login), a Linux runner's
/proc, and the files of the CLI's configuration directory. What changes
trials/P-26.json. The answers keep no model text and the redaction removed nothing. The pass condition is at the script's top, committed before the run.test_the_sandbox_limits_connections_and_passes_the_environmentcomputes the fail from the script's own record.tools/trial_p26_sandbox.sh, is on this branch with its stand-in tests and eleven mutants. It was reviewed for security before the Maintainer ran it.Owed, outside this pull request. #188's "if no" asks that #194's Done-when gain "no shell and no network tool for any Run, until P-26 passes". A comment on #194 asks its owner to add it.
