tools/redact_trial.py reads stdin and writes stdout, opening no path (SonarCloud S2083, S8707) - #276
Conversation
…on stdout, opening no path SonarCloud's S2083 and S8707 on main: the tool opened the two paths it was given. As #273 did for its drift comparer, it now takes the capture on standard input, writes what is left on standard output and names each removal on standard error, and refuses any argument before it reads anything. It still runs as python3 -m tools.redact_trial from the repo, since it reads tools/check_trials.py's rules. Every caller pipes in and out: the trial scripts of P-4, P-8, P-13 and P-39, the App's script, the rulesets drift script, the skill and P-13's runbook. A test that it opens no path, run as the scripts run it, and a mutant that lets it read a path; the scripts' own stand-in tests pass through the new calls. …ever the locale, and no failure silent A fresh review with a security pass found one blocker and two majors. - Read from a file as text, gh's CR LF heads became LF; read as bytes they stayed, and a capture with no blank line between head and body was redacted as one body: a field named for a credential and a header a fixture may not keep passed through. CR LF and a lone CR are read as a line's end, as the file read did; a test feeds a CR LF head, the rulesets drift stand-in answers with CR LF heads as gh does, and a mutant that keeps them is killed. - The clean text is written as UTF-8 to the byte stream, as the file was, whatever the locale; a test runs it under an ASCII locale, and a mutant is killed. - The three calls that send the report to /dev/null now say so and stop when the redaction fails. And bytes that are not UTF-8 stop it with nothing written; the App's script's redirection order is held by a test; the skill's step is rewrapped. - Line 88: Update the redact flow in finish so it checks the pipeline containing
tools.redact_trial and sed, and returns a failure status immediately when that
pipeline fails. Ensure rm -f "$1" runs only after successful redaction,
preserving the raw capture on failure.

…artial clean file, and says so CodeRabbit on #276: with the cleanup path's set +e, a failed redaction went on to delete the raw capture silently. Keeping the raw capture, as it suggested, would leave it in OUT, the directory a session reads; so it is still deleted unread, its partial clean file goes with it, the failure is said on standard error and returned, and the cleanup counts it in the script's exit. A test runs redact() alone on a capture that redacts and one that does not, and a mutant is killed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…does since #276 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Main gained #276: the trial scripts pipe their captures through the redaction. No conflict. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… stdin, and the fake keeps its own rule Main now holds decisions 0043 and 0044, so this branch's record is 0045 and its references say so. Main's #276 made tools/redact_trial.py read stdin and write stdout, so tools/trial_reader_reads.sh feeds it that way; with paths it would have stopped at the first redaction. Main's #272 put the ruling's write-access set in the port (adapters/timeline.py): the issue world keeps its own copy and never imports the port, and a test holds both to the ruling's three words. Decision 0045's port row names the port's test. In the design, the P-46 row is main's and P-47 is this branch's; both test classes are kept. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

SonarCloud has two findings open on main against
tools/redact_trial.py: S2083 (path injection) and S8707. The tool opened the two paths it was given. As #273 did for its drift comparer, it now opens no path at all:It still runs as
python3 -m tools.redact_trialfrom the repo, since it readstools/check_trials.py's rules. So it cannot run aspython3 -I, which would drop the repo from its path.Callers
Every call moves from
redact_trial RAW OUT > REPORTtoredact_trial < RAW > OUT 2> REPORT:tools/trial_as_app.sh, which sends the report through its pipe:< "$1" 2>&1 > clean | sed;tools/rulesets_drift.sh;The three calls that discard the report say so and stop when the redaction fails.
P-26's script, on its own branch, makes the same change when it next merges main.
Behaviour kept
gh api --includeends its head's lines with CR LF. Read as bytes without this, a head would be redacted as body. This was the review's blocker.Tests and mutants
Redaction.test_it_opens_no_path_it_is_givencovers:ghdoes.Verification and review
make verifypassed in the worktree, with history, atSIM_SEEDS=40: 889 tests. The scripts' stand-in tests run the real redaction through the new calls.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
