Part of #191: the facts port's second pull request, the timeline. It builds on the transport and adapters/pull.py, which #264 landed.

What it adds: adapters/timeline.py.

  • Accounts. An actor's kind comes from GitHub's account type and the configuration the caller gives, by account id, never from a name's spelling (decision 0005, L-57).
    • machine_user is the User named as the approver, and no other.
    • lens is a Bot named as a Lens's App, read as that Lens's name.
    • Any other Bot is app, and any other User is human.
    • A User's write access, the machine user's among them, is read from the collaborator permission. admin, maintain and write count; triage does not, as the Maintainer ruled on Design: an App cannot read an author's permission from the listing (P-32 failed); read it from the collaborator permission endpoint #222. It is read once a login for the snapshot. An App is never asked.
    • These are refused, never guessed: a User whose login GitHub would not give, [bot] among them; a permission GitHub does not give; and a 404 on the permission.
  • The timeline and the reviews. Both are read page by page, following the link header. A list is whole only when its last page names no next page, never by a page's length (§3.3). An item that is not an object is refused.
  • label_events. As the timeline lists them, with who made each and when.
  • reviews.
    • Each review comes with its commit and that commit's content id: the sha256 of the compare diff against the base's head. P-29 shows that this is the pull request's own content.
    • A commit too large to diff, or one no longer there, takes the commit's own id, as adapters/pull.py does for the head.
    • From the timeline: who dismissed each review and what it was before.
    • No text of GitHub's is kept: no body, no dismissal message, no comment.
  • since_writer.
    • It gives when a person with write access last acted, and how many acts the Factory made since: the machine user's approvals, a dismissed one included; and the machine user's or a Factory App's labels and queue moves (decision 0003).
    • A mention or a subscription is nobody's act.
    • An action an App took with a person's token is not that person's.
    • An act in the same second as a writer's action is counted, the reading that stops work.
  • Tests: tests/test_adapters.py, class Timeline. They replay P-7's reviews, dismissals and timeline, P-29's compare, and P-28. A stand-in answers the permission and compare reads no fixture holds yet; the permission's trial is the one Design: an App cannot read an author's permission from the listing (P-32 failed); read it from the collaborator permission endpoint #222 plans.

Not here: threads. They need GraphQL for their resolved state, and their category join reads the Lens's applied artifact, which hits the same redirect as #192's outcome read. The four thread rows and 0038's join wait on adapters/threads.py, which is now in adapters/AGENTS.md's plan.

Rows.

Mutants. 31 on adapters/timeline.py, each naming its tests, each checked to compile and killed by hand. An equivalent one was dropped: a 404's body names no permission, so the permission check refuses it anyway.

Reviews, one fix round on 2ff5469: a fresh-context Claude review, a security pass, and AGY on Flash, which approved with one finding: a mutant that broke the syntax instead of the rule. "Muse: not run".

Taken:

  • The machine user was read as unable to write (Claude; blocking). kernel/derive.py's standing approval needs can_write, so its approval could never stand. It is now read like a person's, and matched by id (both).
  • A dismissed approval fell out of the act count (both; blocking). The timeline gives a review's state now, so the re-approval loop the ceiling bounds went uncounted.
  • A list was whole at a short page (Claude; blocking). Section 3.3 forbids that; GitHub's link header names the next page.
  • Any App's label or queue move counted as the Factory's (both).
  • An act in the writer's second was not counted (both).
  • A review's 406 or lost commit refused the whole snapshot (Claude).
  • An item that is not an object was skipped (Claude).
  • A 404 on the permission read as none (security). That fails open for a renamed writer.
  • An App's action with a person's token counted as that person's (security).
  • A login with dots or a slash reached the path (security).
  • Three mutants were killed for unrelated reasons, and one broke the syntax (Claude, AGY).
  • 0005's and L-57's rows claimed more than their tests hold (Claude).

…review with its dismissal, and the acts since a writer (#191)

adapters/timeline.py: an actor's kind from GitHub's account type and the configuration, never a name's spelling, a Lens's App read as the Lens's name and the approver as the machine user alone; a person's write access from the collaborator permission, admin, maintain or write and never triage, once a login (the Maintainer's ruling on #222); the timeline read page by page; label events as the timeline lists them; each review with its commit's content, read by compare against the base's head, and from the timeline who dismissed it and what it was before, with no text of GitHub's kept; when a person with write access last acted, and how many acts the Factory made since. Threads wait on adapters/threads.py. 23 mutants, each killed by hand.

…s still an act, and a list ends where GitHub says it does, after review (#191)

The Claude review, the security pass and AGY on 2ff5469: the machine user was read as unable to write, so its approval could never stand, and is now read like a person's and matched by its account id; a dismissed approval dropped out of the act count, and is counted; a list was whole at a short page, and now ends only when the link header names no next page; only the Factory's own identities make acts, a tie with a writer's action counted; a review's commit too large to diff, or gone, takes the commit's own id; an item that is not an object is refused; a 404 on the permission is refused, never read as none; an App's action with a person's token is not the person's; a login GitHub would not give is refused. The 0005 and L-57 rows say what still waits. 31 mutants on the timeline, each checked to compile and killed by hand.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a timeline adapter for pull-request events, reviews, actor classification, collaborator permissions, commit content identifiers, and writer-relative action counts. It adds adapter tests and updates documentation references to distinguish implemented timeline handling from pending thread handling.

Changes: Timeline and review adapter

Layer / File(s) Summary
Actor identity and write access
adapters/timeline.py, adapters/AGENTS.md, tests/test_adapters.py, tools/mutants.py, docs/decisions/0005-each-role-writes-through-its-own-app.md, docs/lessons.md
The adapter validates account identities and collaborator permissions, classifies actors, and detects configured Factory identities. Tests cover actor types, permissions, and malformed identities. Documentation records the permission and review-data rules.
Timeline and review retrieval
adapters/timeline.py, tests/test_adapters.py, tools/mutants.py, docs/decisions/0015-a-lens-is-read-from-its-own-app-and-only-what-gates-holds-a-merge.md, docs/decisions/0018-a-lens-is-read-from-its-own-app-and-workflow-and-only-what-gates-holds-a-merge.md, docs/decisions/0022-a-lens-is-read-from-its-own-app-and-workflow-its-job-judges-every-job-it-waits-on-and-only-what-gates-holds-a-merge.md, docs/decisions/0026-a-lens-is-read-from-its-own-app-and-workflow-its-job-judges-every-job-it-waits-on-and-only-what-gates-holds-a-merge.md, docs/decisions/0038-a-result-asks-and-names-no-one-and-apply-writes-the-finding-it-posted.md
The adapter retrieves paginated timeline and review data, extracts label and dismissal events, validates review states, and derives commit content identifiers. Tests cover pagination, invalid responses, review metadata, and commit comparisons. Decision references now point to thread handling for pending thread metadata.
Writer-relative action counts
adapters/timeline.py, tests/test_adapters.py, tools/mutants.py, docs/decisions/0003-one-controller-admits-every-run.md
since_writer counts qualifying actions at or after the latest human writer action. Tests cover action attribution, timestamp boundaries, approvals, dismissals, labels, and merge-queue actions.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d2cc2

The timeline adapter changes are low risk. One documentation line presents a permission trial as recorded when it does not exist, and the repository's pending-check tracking will not remind anyone to write it. Fix this wording before or shortly after merge.

…, not a trial said to be recorded (#191)

CodeRabbit on the pull request: the lesson said the collaborator permission's trial recorded what each credential is shown, though it has not run, and in words the context check does not read as a wait. A test marked @pending now names the fixture the trial will leave, and the lesson says not held yet.

…d, and P-27's grounds the answer's shape (#191)

CI on a610f51, with main merged: P-27 (#266) holds a read of the collaborator permission asked as the Maintainer, which made the pending test pass unexpectedly. L-57 asks what the Factory's own credential is shown, so the pending test now looks for a read made as an App, and P-27's read grounds how the port reads a permission.

… stdin, and the fake keeps its own rule

Main now holds decisions 0043 and 0044, so this branch's record is 0045
and its references say so. Main's #276 made tools/redact_trial.py read
stdin and write stdout, so tools/trial_reader_reads.sh feeds it that
way; with paths it would have stopped at the first redaction. Main's
#272 put the ruling's write-access set in the port
(adapters/timeline.py): the issue world keeps its own copy and never
imports the port, and a test holds both to the ruling's three words.
Decision 0045's port row names the port's test. In the design, the P-46
row is main's and P-47 is this branch's; both test classes are kept.

Main's #272 added the port's mutant "triage is write access" (adapters/timeline.py), the name this branch gave the issue world's. Each mutant is told apart by its name, so this one is "the issue world reads triage as write access".
