Trials P-27, P-14 and P-20 (pass), P-4 and P-9 (fail): forks wait and run alone, caches hold, a star nudges; a repo subset narrows no public read, and a chained run's actor is the bot - #266
Conversation
…et at the Maintainer's terminal tools/trial_p4_narrow.sh mints one token for the trial-author App's installation, narrowed to the permission contents: read and to one repository, reads what the subset permits, tries a write it does not permit and a read of a repository it does not name, keeps each status as the answer, and revokes the token before it exits, on every path. Python keeps the mint's answer without its token; a token or a JWT is held in a variable only, reaches curl on its standard input and is never written; every capture is redacted outside the repo before it is kept. The pattern is tools/trial_as_app.sh and tools/trial_p39_reach.sh with the hardening the reviews of #220 asked. Five tests run it against a stand-in curl and openssl: the three reads and the revocation, no token kept or printed; each refusal before anything is minted; a refused mint stopping with the answer redacted; a revocation that is not 204 told and failing; a read's status kept whatever it is. The first run asked the canary for README.md, which it does not hold, and was answered 404: a fault of the script, not an answer about the token. The permitted read, and the read of the repository the token does not name, now ask the root listing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ches hold, passes chain and a star nudges; a repo subset narrows no public read Five fixtures from the canary, 2026-10-21, built from redacted captures only, by the working rulings on #187. P-27: an outside first-time contributor's pull-request run waited (action_required) until a person approved it; a fork's own workflow file ran only as the pull request's run, a dispatch of it was refused and no schedule ran. P-14: a job with permissions: {} and no cache action was refused a cache write (403), a run: step holds no cache-service token, and no cache exists afterwards. P-9: a job holding actions: write alone dispatched the next run (204), listed at once. P-20: ten stars a minute apart started ten runs, each within two seconds. P-4, by tools/trial_p4_narrow.sh run at the Maintainer's word: the token is minted with the subset and held to its permissions (write 403), but a repository subset does not narrow a read of a public repo (200), so section 5.1 now says a token cannot write beyond its repo, not that it cannot reach one; the first run asked a path the canary does not hold and is kept as what it is. sim/grounding.py gains a_forks_run_never_counts, a_pass_starts_its_successor and a_public_event_starts_a_pass, grounded by P-27, P-9 and P-20 and marked where the fake already assumes them; no behaviour of the fake changes. Section 6's rows record the verdicts, sections 4.9 and 7.3 cite the fixtures, and a test recomputes each answer from the recorded runs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nd tests that recompute what they claim The reviews of 2adfeb6 (Muse, and a fresh Claude review with a security pass). - Verify: the new test named the canary (it uses the constant now), and an older test used trials/P-9.json as a directory, which collided with the new fixture (it uses P-98). - Decision 0035's rule from #225 met trials of reach and of forks: P-4 reads beyond its App's reach on purpose and P-27 reads forks of the canary. The row and its test hold those two to the org's repos and the forks of the canary; every other fixture keeps the full rule. - tools/trial_p4_narrow.sh wrote the mint's answer, token included, to a scratch file; it holds it in a variable now, as tools/trial_p39_reach.sh does. The stand-in records the mint request and curl's arguments, so a widened mint, or the token on curl's command line, fails the tests; the tests close stdin and time out. - Verdicts follow the working rulings on #187, and each fixture says so: P-9 fails on the ruling's last clause (the successor's actor is github-actions[bot], not the first run's; the pass field had weakened that clause), while P-27's and P-14's added clauses are recorded as held or not. Section 6's P-9 row says so, and section 5.1 no longer claims writes are narrowed. - The fixtures' exchanges stand in the order they happened; P-9 records each run's own report; P-27 records the fork-approval policy it cites. … of forks and a trial of reach, as decision 0035's row says Main's check of a fixture's repos (#252, issue 226) holds every fixture of the canary to the org's repos and each App to its installation's reach. Three fixtures of this branch read beyond that by their question: P-27 reads forks of the canary, P-4's App reads a repo of the org its install does not reach, and P-20 stars the canary through PUT /user/starred/{owner}/{repo}, a path the check did not read. tools/check_trials.py now names the trials of forks (P-27) and of reach (P-4) and what each may read beyond, the canary's forks and the org's repos, reads the starred path as naming its repo, and refuses each way round with a counter-example: a fork read outside a trial of forks, another owner's repo in a trial of forks, another org in a trial of reach, a star of another owner's repo. Four mutants of the new allowances each fail its test. Conflicts: sim/grounding.py takes main's five-field rules with the three new ones appended; the design keeps main's P-8 row and its rewritten section 7.3, with P-9's row and its citation; the tests keep main's version of the repo test and both new test classes. …sion 0035's row says Muse's read of the merged head: a trial of reach skipped the whole App block, the ban on an App's read of the org's root among it; a fork's repo licensed its owner for an organization call in the same read; and a star returned before the .. check and the whole call's repo scan. Now a trial of reach is spared the App's install alone and still held to the org's repos by the owner's check; an owner a read names at an org's level is never licensed by a fork; and a star goes through the same reading as any path. Four counter-examples hold each way round, two mutants are added, and P-27's test now reads the dispatch runs as well, which a planted fork run among them fails. run’s actor: a successor has actor github-actions[bot], and started_by uses that

…nd of reach CI's decision-records check: a record's row is never edited, only added, and the fix round had widened the Boundary of the row #225 added. That row is restored as main has it, and the allowance for P-4's repository subset and P-27's forks is a row of its own, citing the working rulings on issue one hundred and eighty-seven and held by the same test. The local verify ran on an export without history, which left the check nothing to compare with. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CI's mutation run called two of them STALE: the check's rewrite for trials of forks and of reach changed the lines they break. Three more would have been: the star's own mutant, written before the fix round moved a star into the same reading as any path, and two of main's that named the REST branch and an App's reach before this branch changed them. Each now breaks the line as it stands, and each is killed by the test it names. No mutant's code is now missing or found twice. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… does CodeRabbit on #266: the row said nothing reads a pass's actor, but started_by tells a successor from a person's dispatch by the account of the run that started the pass, which P-9 recorded as github-actions[bot] for a successor. The row now says so. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Main gained #266 (the batch 2c trials and the repo check's trials of forks and reach); no conflict. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d, and P-27's grounds the answer's shape (#191) CI on a610f51, with main merged: P-27 (#266) holds a read of the collaborator permission asked as the Maintainer, which made the pending test pass unexpectedly. L-57 asks what the Factory's own credential is shown, so the pending test now looks for a read made as an App, and P-27's read grounds how the port reads a permission. Batch 2c of section 6.1, by the working rulings on #187: five trials in the canary, five fixtures, three rules of the fake grounded, and the design told what each showed. P-27 ran whole: the Maintainer provided an outside account for its approval-wait half.
What each trial asked, and found
trials/P-27.jsoncompleted/action_requireduntil a person approved it, then ran as attempt 2, triggered by that person. A workflow file added in the Maintainer's fork ran only as the pull request's own run (pull_request,head_repository.forktrue); a dispatch of it in the canary was refused (422) and the canary has no schedule run at alltrials/P-14.jsonrun:step holds no cache-service token; no cache exists in any scope afterwardstrials/P-4.jsoncontentsread,metadataread added by GitHub, the canary alone) and held to its permissions (a write beyond them, 403). The ruling's last clause fails: a read ofcombsmith/software-factory, which the token does not name, was answered 200, because every org repo is public and any token reads public contenttrials/P-9.jsonactions: writealone dispatched the next run (204), listed at once, byworkflow_dispatch. The ruling's last clause fails: the successor's actor isgithub-actions[bot], not the first run'strials/P-20.jsonHow the verdicts were read (for the Maintainer to overrule). The verdict follows the working rulings' condition for each trial. I wrote each
passfield at 23:48Z before anything ran, as my reading of the ruling. Where my wording added a clause the ruling does not ask, the fixture records whether it held, and that clause does not decide the verdict:status; GitHub records the wait inconclusion. Each fixture's last exchange states this.

What changes beyond the fixtures
tools/trial_p4_narrow.shfollowstools/trial_p39_reach.shand the hardening of Trial P-8 (pass) and P-32 (fail): a pass sized to the counts costs 149 points, 1,788 an hour at the schedule; an App reads an owner as a contributor #220. It mints one token narrowed tocontents: readand one repo, holds the mint's answer in a variable only, makes three reads, and revokes the token on every path. The classNarrowedTokenruns it against a stand-in curl and openssl that record the mint request and curl's arguments.sim/grounding.pygainsa_forks_run_never_counts(P-27),a_pass_starts_its_successor(P-9) anda_public_event_starts_a_pass(P-20), each grounded by its fixture. They are marked wheresim/world.pyalready assumes them (comments only; no seed or invariant changes). P-9 grounds its rule though its verdict fails, astrials/P-17.jsongroundsa_queued_run_is_listed: the rule is exactly what the fixture shows. P-14 and P-4 ground no rule; the design cites them.tools/check_trials.py: main's check of a fixture's repos (Trials: the check holds a fixture's repos exactly, with a counter-example for each way round (#226) #252, issue 226) holds every fixture of the canary to the org's repos and each App to its reach. This change names the trials of forks (P-27) and of reach (P-4) and what each may read beyond, readsPUT /user/starred/{owner}/{repo}(P-20) as naming its repo, and adds four counter-examples, one each way round. Decision 0035 gains a row that says so; its existing row stands unchanged. Eight counter-examples in all, and six hand mutants of the new allowances, each fail the test.tests/test_tools.py::test_the_batch_2c_trials_ground_their_rules_on_what_the_runs_showrecomputes each answer from the recorded run records and Date headers. Edits that falsify a record fail it on a scratch copy: a run shifted, an actor changed, a mint widened, a branch renamed. An older test that usedtrials/P-9.jsonas a directory now uses P-98.For later (not done here)

Reviews and verification
make verifyon a freshgit archiveexport (PATH=/usr/bin:/bin SIM_SEEDS=40): passed at e7a3ee8, 827 tests, run alone. The export holds no history, so the decision-records check had nothing to compare with; CI found that the fix round had edited 0035's row. The last commit restores that row and adds one, and verify then passed in the worktree itself, with history. At ab34b3e, run beside AGY, one hook timing test failed under load, and it passed alone. The mutation run is CI's.P-9.json, Decision 0035: a trial of repos records the canary as its home, and a measurement's reads name each repo they span #225's rule against forks and reach) and five majors (the mint file, the stand-in not watching curl's arguments, P-14's and P-9's verdicts against their written conditions, §5.1). All folded into ab34b3e, or into the merge for the rule, which main had meanwhile moved into the check...check and the whole call's repo scan. P-27's test never read the dispatch runs. Each now has a counter-example or an assertion, and two more mutants.Closes #187.
