Closes #7649
Part of #7545 (item 3). @SpicyMarinara

Why this change

  • Conversation chats could not make videos at all. A character could send a selfie, but there was no way to ask for a short video message, and the Conversation Gallery had no Video button or Videos tab.
  • A clip asked for this way should show what is happening in the chat right now, so it reads the recent conversation instead of only the character card.

What changed

  • /video (or /video Name) and a Video button in the Conversation Gallery: a character sends a short video message. It arrives as a new message from that character and plays inline. The button uses the character picked in the Gallery, and shows whenever Illustrator is installed (selfies don't need to be on). A name that fits more than one character (/video Smith with Alice Smith and Bob Smith, or two characters both named Aster) picks no one and asks for the full name or a pick in the Gallery.
  • The Conversation Gallery now has the Videos tab, and Animate illustration on a picture makes a clip under the newest reply, sent by the picked character and written to continue that picture (it adds no "sent a video" note).
  • A Video messages section in the Conversation Illustrator card: Video Connection, and First frame for what the clip starts from (a new selfie, the avatar or sprite, a selfie with the avatar as fallback, or no picture). The selfie choices need Generated Selfies on and a Selfie Connection. The first frame is checked before any paid call, a selfie's prompt is reviewed together with the clip's, and pictures in other formats (WebP, AVIF) are converted to PNG instead of being dropped.
  • The clip shows the latest moment of the conversation: the AI writing it reads as many recent messages as Illustrator does for a picture (its Agent Budget context size), starting at the latest conversation start and skipping messages hidden from the AI (or from that character) and messages with no text. A selfie first frame reads the same messages, so the clip starts from that moment too. The video connection's Video Prompting Instructions guide the prompt.
  • Later replies get a short note that a video was sent, so the character knows what it sent.
  • A new editable prompt, Conversation Video Message, under Settings › Generations › Video Generation Prompt Overrides.
  • If a clip is saved but can't be attached to a message, it is still reported as made (with no message), a short notice says it is in the Gallery's Videos tab, and no empty message is left behind, including when the message was deleted while the clip was being made.
  • Works on chats using the built-in local model, like /selfie.
  • Roleplay Gallery animations also accept WebP/AVIF pictures now: /generate-scene-video uses the same shared picture reader and video helper.
  • Shared video code for the next items in [Feature]: Video generation and settings improvements (tracking issue) #7545 (services/video/chat-video-generation.ts). The selfie runtime gains optional cancel, queue, preview and reviewed-prompt parameters for a selfie first frame; a character's own [selfie] doesn't use them and behaves as before.
  • Characters sending videos on their own is not part of this PR ([Feature]: Video generation and settings improvements (tracking issue) #7545 item 6). /selfie, Roleplay and Game Mode are unchanged.

Validation

  • pnpm check passes locally
  • Container (Docker / Podman) built and ran without issue
  • Ran the app, clicked through the changes manually
  • Checked edge cases (light + dark mode, mobile viewport, empty states, error paths)
  • Above manual verification completed (describe below)
  • Read and followed CONTRIBUTING.md

Automated runs on 295040e09 (based on staging at 8521f04eb):

  • pnpm check: passes.
  • Regression convo-video-command: passes. Through the real routes with fake text, image and ComfyUI services, it covers prompt preview, each First frame setting, the settings check before any prompt is written (also in preview), selfies off using the avatar, a WebP selfie reaching the video as PNG, the selfie prompt review and its override, the recent-conversation context for the video prompt and a selfie first frame (Illustrator's context size, conversation start, hidden and empty messages skipped, also after a reviewed prompt), animating a Gallery picture (newest reply, the picture's prompt, no sender note), the built-in local model, Roleplay being refused, and the history note.
  • Related regressions pass: the video regressions (including inline-chat-videos), the gallery and prompt regressions, advanced-memory-recall, slash-command-usage, image-prompt-guidance, open-issues.
  • Full pnpm regression: 882/882 pass.
  • Review fixes eba7c2f51, 0ca0fcc0d and d3b4e8e76 (on the staging merges): pnpm check, pnpm localization:check, and the convo-video, video, gallery, slash, open-issues and localization regressions pass; the new /video name check fails without the fix. Local CodeRabbit review of each commit: 0 findings.
  • Not run: pnpm smoke:ui / pnpm regression:ui (Playwright browsers not installed locally).

Manual verification notes

  • Manually verify in a Conversation chat: /video sends a video message from the character that plays inline; /video <name> picks a character in a group chat; an unknown name lists the available characters.
  • Manually verify the Conversation Gallery shows Video, Animate and the Videos tab even with Generated Selfies off, and Video sends a message from the character picked in the Gallery.
  • Manually verify each First frame choice: selfie with avatar fallback (with and without a Selfie Connection, and with Generated Selfies off), new selfie, avatar or sprite, prompt only.
  • Manually verify a selfie first frame with a WebP image provider (for example Venice) starts the clip from the selfie, not the avatar.
  • Manually verify that after chatting about something specific, the clip (and a selfie first frame) shows that moment.
  • Manually verify Animate illustration on a Conversation Gallery picture puts the clip under the newest reply, sent by the character picked in the Gallery, and continues that picture.
  • Manually verify that with Expose media prompts before sending on, the review window shows the video prompt (and the selfie prompt for a selfie first frame), an edited selfie prompt is the one drawn, and Cancel makes nothing.
  • Manually verify /video in a chat using the built-in local model.
  • Manually verify the character's next reply knows it sent a video.
  • Manually verify the Video messages settings and an inline video message at a phone-sized width, in light and dark mode.
  • Manually verify /selfie, Roleplay and Game Mode videos behave as before.

Docs and release impact

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Send short, character-specific videos in Conversation chats with /video; optionally specify a character by name, or animate an image from the Gallery.
    • Review and edit video and selfie prompts before generation, with prompts informed by recent conversation context.
    • Configure video connections and first-frame preferences in chat settings. Videos can use a generated selfie, character avatar, selected Gallery image, or no image, depending on your settings.
    • If a video can’t be added to chat, it remains available in the Gallery.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for video messages and clarified which chat modes support scene videos.

Conversation characters can now send short video messages (Pasta-Devs#7649, Pasta-Devs#7545 item 3).

- server: services/generation/conversation-video-runtime.ts writes the
video prompt with the Prompt Model (new conversation.video prompt
override, plus the connection's Video Prompting Instructions, copied
sentences removed), picks the first frame from the new
  sceneVideoFirstFrame setting (picture_or_avatar | picture | avatar |
prompt_only; "picture" is a new selfie here), generates and saves the clip. The selfie first frame reuses
handleConversationSelfieCommand unchanged; the avatar comes from
readPreferredCharacterReferenceImage and must be PNG or JPEG.
- POST /gallery/:chatId/video (Conversation only, previewOnly supported):
a new clip becomes an assistant message from the character; with
galleryImageId the clip joins the newest reply. The clip is saved before
the message is touched: if attaching fails, the route still returns it
with messageId null and removes a message it created, so no empty message
  is left.
- A clip the user asks for (/video, the Gallery's Video button) has no
context of its own, so the writer reads the recent conversation: the last
N messages from Illustrator's Agent Budget context size
(loadIllustratorContextSize) that have text, labelled by speaker, without
messages hidden from the AI (formatRecentVideoContext in
services/video/prompt-context.ts). A selfie first frame gets the end of the
same conversation as its context, so the clip and its starting picture show
the same moment (also when the video prompt was reviewed). A character's
[video: ...] keeps using its own context.
- Prompt history: formatSentVideoNotes adds "[Name sent a video message:
...]" for Conversation clips, so a video-only message is not empty text.
- serializeSceneVideo and resolveSceneVideoConnectionId moved from
gallery.routes into services/video/chat-video-messages.ts, and the new
  services/video/chat-video-generation.ts holds ChatVideoError,
  resolveChatVideoSetup, generateAndSaveChatVideo and
readVideoReferenceImage, which later video features reuse.
- client: /video slash command, onGenerateVideo(characterId?) threaded
through Conversation surfaces, Gallery Video and Animate enabled in
Conversation, video prompt review dialog rendered there, and a Video
messages section (connection + first frame) in the Illustrator card.
- docs: selfies.md "Video messages", slash-commands.md, scene-video.md.

Regression: scripts/regressions/convo-video-command.regression.ts covers
preview, each first-frame mode with fake text/image/ComfyUI services, the
selfie-mode failure without a selfie connection, the recent-conversation
context (Illustrator's context size, hidden and empty messages skipped) for
the video prompt and a selfie first frame, animating a gallery picture,
Roleplay rejection, and the history note.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d3b4e

The documentation translation has a qualifying follow-up issue, and no remaining merge-blocking issue was established. Merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d3b4e

The inspected flow preserves chat and character scoping and uses configured generation connections. No concrete security violation was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns the full before-and-after comparison and recovery after interrupted media or attachment writes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller admitted by the application's network and authentication policy can exercise generation using chat-selected credentials and data. Resource checks constrain images, characters, and attachments to the selected chat, but do not establish separate tenant authorization. Effective external exposure depends on deployment configuration, including trusted-network bypasses and explicit unauthenticated-access options.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The public route checks chat existence, Conversation mode, and selected-character membership. Gallery first-frame lookup combines image ID with chat ID. Existing-message anchors come from that chat's messages rather than a caller-supplied message ID. Video serving requires a matching chat-owned metadata row and a contained, validated file path.
  • observed — Reference images cross the configured video-provider boundary. For Seedance, temporary public reference upload requires an enabled connection option; without a usable public URL or enabled upload, the helper fails rather than publishing automatically. The inspected Conversation first-frame paths supply image bytes rather than caller-provided URLs.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Attachment delivery writes the authoritative swipe first, then separately updates the active-message mirror. Per-message queues and active-swipe predicates limit concurrent lost updates, but there is no enclosing transaction or attachment deduplication. Interruption can leave partial delivery; the inspected callers retain the saved clip for Gallery recovery. No cross-chat security consequence was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If attachment recovery gains retries, use videoId-based idempotency and reconciliation from the authoritative swipe to its message mirror. This would strengthen failure containment without treating presentation inconsistency as a verified security finding.

Full details: Localized Ui Text

Explanation

The PR still hard-codes the new /video description at packages/client/src/lib/slash-commands.ts:1396 as Have a character send you a short video message. ConversationInput.tsx:252-255 displays command.description in completions, and slash-commands.ts:346 includes it in slash-command help. The added en.json entries cover /video usage and feedback, but no key covers this description.

Resolution

Add an English localization key for the /video description. Extend the slash-command description model to carry a localization key, and resolve that key in both completion rendering and slash-command help. Keep the existing localized usage and feedback keys.

Full details: Existing Tests Not Weakened

Explanation

The PR weakens a pre-existing regression expectation in scripts/regressions/slash-command-usage.regression.ts: the base expected parameterized.length to be 16, while the PR changes it to 17 at line 233. The description explains that /video adds a command, but it does not state that a maintainer requested this assertion behavior change.

Resolution

Restore the existing assert.equal(parameterized.length, 16) expectation, or keep it unchanged and add a separate focused assertion for /video. If the total must be 17, update the PR description to state that a maintainer requested this behavior change.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title accurately describes the Conversation video-message changes and uses Conventional Commits syntax. It is exactly 80 characters, not under 80, and its summary is not written as a plain imperative.

Note: If using ComfyUI, switching between including/excluding first frame for a video model is very finicky. Would recommend having two separate video model connections, one for including first frame and one for text only video generation, and having chat settings match the connection.

This currently seems to be a limitation with ComfyUI and the API, so not much to be done in Marinara Engine. There might be a workaround for ComfyUI, and if I learn about it I will share the findings in the PR/Issue in case anyone else comes across it.

Thanks for this, James. Video messages in Conversation are a great addition. A review found two problems to fix before merging, and some smaller ones. Line numbers refer to head 73c7112da.

Must fix

1. Animate credits the clip to the wrong character and never looks at the picture
(ChatArea.tsx:3667, conversation-video-runtime.ts:129)

  • onAnimateImage calls handleGenerateConversationVideo(undefined, image.id), so the sender falls back to chatCharIds[0].
    • In a group chat (Aster first, Bo second), animating Bo's selfie writes "a video message Aster records on their phone", with Aster's appearance.
  • The prompt writer only gets the recent chat. It never sees the gallery row's prompt. The video model gets the picture as its first frame with a prompt for a different scene, which tends to morph or cut.
  • The clip is attached to the newest reply (possibly Bo's) with characterName: "Aster". Every later prompt then carries [Aster sent a video message: …] inside Bo's turn.
  • Suggested fix:
    • Pass the Gallery's picked character to Animate, as the Video button already does (selectedSelfieCharacterId).
    • Give the writer the picture's own prompt, as Roleplay Animate does (referenceImagePrompt / resolveGalleryVideoSourceExchange in gallery.routes.ts).
    • Only set characterName (and so the sent-video note) for real /video and Video-button messages.

2. Paid selfie first frames are thrown away, and first-frame checks run after paid calls
(conversation-video-runtime.ts:177, :187, :243)

  • readVideoReferenceImage accepts only PNG/JPEG. Venice always returns WebP, and image-generation.ts also allows AVIF.
    • With the default First frame, every /video pays for a selfie, rejects it, and silently falls back to the avatar. The catch at ~246 only logs a warning.
    • In "New selfie" mode, /video fails after paying for it.
  • The cheap checks run after the paid prompt-writer call and after the user's prompt review: picture format, a selfie connection present in picture mode, a readable avatar in avatar mode.
  • Suggested fix:
    • Convert WebP/AVIF to PNG with the existing lazy getSharp() (packages/server/src/utils/sharp.ts); fail clearly only when sharp is missing.
    • Run the cheap checks before the writer and in previewOnly.
    • Add a WebP selfie case to convo-video-command.regression.ts.

Should fix

  1. The selfie first frame skips prompt review (conversation-video-runtime.ts:241). With "Expose media prompts before sending" on, only the video prompt is shown. The selfie prompt is written after confirmation and sent to the image provider unreviewed. A standalone /selfie is reviewed. Suggestion: return the selfie prompt in the same previewOnly review and accept its override, reusing the /selfie preview path.
  2. The default First frame makes a paid selfie after Generated Selfies is turned off (conversation-video-runtime.ts:239). The drawer hides the Selfie Connection when selfies are off, so the user can't see why. Suggestion: count the selfie connection only when characterCommands !== false && conversationCommandToggles.selfie !== false, the same test as the client's selfieFeatureEnabled.
  3. The selfie first frame ignores Cancel and the image queue (conversation-video-runtime.ts:272). Closing the tab, or hitting the 30-minute client timeout, still pays for the selfie writer and the image. Its image request also bypasses runImageGenerationRequest, so one-at-a-time providers such as NovelAI can fail with a concurrency error while Illustrator is drawing. Suggestion: give handleConversationSelfieCommand optional signal and queue parameters.
  4. /video fails on chats using the built-in local model (gallery.routes.ts:1259). /selfie works there. promptConnectionId is passed as null for __local_sidecar__, so the runtime throws "No text connection is configured for selfie prompt generation." Suggestion: keep promptConnectionId: chat.connectionId and null only the connection object, as the selfie route does.
  5. The Gallery's Video and Animate buttons only appear when selfies are on (ChatGalleryPanel.tsx:87, ChatGallery.tsx:683). Without a Selfie Connection, or with First frame on avatar or prompt only, /video works but the Gallery has no Video or Animate. The docs say to click Video in the Gallery. Suggestion: show them whenever Illustrator is installed, and move the character picker out of the onGenerateSelfie && block.
  6. The client ignores the response (ChatArea.tsx:1670).
    • When the clip isn't attached (messageId: null), there is no toast. The clip only shows on the Videos tab, while the user clicked from Images.
    • When the video fails after its selfie was saved, the Gallery isn't refreshed, so the selfie stays hidden.
    • Suggestion: show a short toast when messageId is null, and move the gallery invalidation into finally.
  7. One chat's /video can close another chat's prompt review (ChatArea.tsx:1677).
    • ChatArea isn't keyed by chat, and the review resolver is shared. Example: chat A's preview opens the review; then chat B's preview is turned down, and B's finally calls closeRoleplayVideoPromptReview(null) on A's review.
    • Suggestion: add a per-handler guard ref, or close the review in finally only when this call opened it.
  8. Hardening: formatRecentVideoContext (prompt-context.ts:265) drops only hiddenFromAI. It ignores isConversationStart and per-character hiding, which replies respect. The Conversation UI can't set those markers, but an imported Roleplay chat can carry them. Suggestion: slice from the latest start marker and filter with isMessageHiddenFromAIForCharacter.

Nits

  • prompt-overrides/registry/conversation.ts:139: the comment mentions a character [video] command that doesn't exist.
  • ChatArea.tsx:3666: the inline onGenerateVideo / onAnimateImage arrows rebuild the memoized galleryActions on every render (also while streaming). Use useCallback.
  • ChatSettingsDrawer.tsx:7331: the "No video generation connections found" warning uses an undefined --warning token, so it renders in plain text colour.
  • ChatGallery.tsx:689: copy and labels.
    • The picker that also chooses the video sender is announced as "Selfie character".
    • The Conversation Videos tab still says "Scene videos" / "Generate or animate scene videos".
    • The new First frame help is two clauses with jargon; the house rule is one short plain sentence.
  • services/video/chat-video-generation.ts:32: the new shared helpers duplicate the /generate-scene-video path in gallery.routes.ts, including a second reference-image reader that behaves differently. Ideally that route uses the shared helpers too, so a fix like WebP conversion is made once.
  • routes/generate/dry-run-route.ts:845: Peek Prompt doesn't show the new [… sent a video message: …] note. Selfie notes have the same gap, so this could be a follow-up.
  • docs/conversation/selfies.md:104: the card is titled Illustrator Settings, not "Illustrator"; please also update it in #7650.
  • In the Video prompt overrides settings, the description and help don't mention the new "Conversation Video Message" entry.

The PR body also notes that the full pnpm regression run was still in progress, and no CodeRabbit review was run locally. Please add those results with the fixes.

JamesMowery and others added 2 commits October 14, 2026 16:31
- Only one Conversation video action runs at a time. A second one (for
example the Gallery's Video button while /video waits in prompt review)
now says a video is already being made, instead of finding the review
window taken and cancelling the first action's review when it cleans up.
- First frame "New selfie" without a Selfie Connection answers 400 with a
message to choose one or another first frame, instead of a 502 from the
failed selfie. The selfie-or-avatar fallback is unchanged.
- The Conversation Video Message prompt comment no longer names a [video]
command this PR does not add.

Regression: convo-video-command now expects the 400 and its message.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Must fix:
- Animate credits the right character and continues the picture: the
Gallery passes the character picked there (the one its Video button
uses), the prompt writer gets the picture's own prompt, and the clip
under someone's reply carries no characterName, so no "[X sent a video
message]" note is made for it.
- First frames are checked before any paid call, in previewOnly too: the
gallery picture, a readable avatar, and selfies being available.
Pictures that aren't PNG or JPEG (Venice's WebP, AVIF, ...) are
converted to PNG with sharp instead of being thrown away; a clear error
only when sharp is unavailable. /generate-scene-video now uses the same
shared reader and generateAndSaveChatVideo, so Roleplay animations of
  WebP pictures work too.

Should fix:
- A selfie first frame is reviewed with the clip: previewOnly returns the
selfie's prompt and the route accepts selfiePromptOverride /
  selfieNegativePromptOverride.
- Selfies count only when Generated Selfies is on and a Selfie Connection
is set (the drawer's own test), so the default First frame no longer
  pays for a hidden selfie.
- The selfie first frame follows Cancel and the image queue:
  handleConversationSelfieCommand takes optional signal, queue,
previewOnly/onPreview and prompt overrides; a character's own [selfie]
leaves them unset and behaves as before.
- /video works on chats using the built-in local model: the Prompt Model
gets the chat's connection id, as /selfie does.
- The Gallery shows Video and Animate whenever Illustrator is installed,
and the character picker serves selfies and video messages.
- The client says when a clip was saved but not added to the chat, always
refreshes the Gallery, and closes the prompt review only when it opened
  it.
- Recent context starts at the latest conversation start and leaves out
messages hidden from the sending character.

Nits: stable Gallery callbacks, the "no video connections" warning
colour, picker and Videos tab copy in Conversation, a one-sentence help
line, the prompt overrides help, and the docs card name.

Regression: convo-video-command adds the settings check before any
writer call (also in preview), selfies off using the avatar, a WebP
selfie reaching the video as PNG, the selfie prompt review and its
override, the picture prompt and no sender note when animating, the
built-in local model, and conversation start / per-character hiding.

@SpicyMarinara Thanks for the thorough review. Everything is addressed in 295040e09 except the Peek Prompt nit, which I've left as a follow-up as you suggested (details below). Earlier, 10c692228 handled CodeRabbit's four comments, including the [video] comment nit.

Must fix

  1. Animate (character and picture).
    • The Gallery now passes the character picked there to Animate, the same one its Video button uses. onAnimateImage takes (image, characterId), and ChatArea uses stable useCallback handlers.
    • The prompt writer gets the picture's own prompt ("The clip starts from this picture: …") and is asked to continue it.
    • An animated clip under someone's reply carries no characterName, so no [X sent a video message] note is made for it. Only /video and Video-button messages name a sender.
  2. Paid first frames thrown away; checks after paid calls.
    • A new shared toVideoReferenceImage keeps PNG/JPEG as is and converts anything else (Venice's WebP, AVIF, …) to PNG with the lazy getSharp(). It fails clearly only when sharp is unavailable.
    • /generate-scene-video now uses the same reader and generateAndSaveChatVideo, so the fix lives in one place and Roleplay animations of WebP pictures work too. The route's own PNG/JPEG-only reader is gone.
    • The first frame is planned and checked before the prompt writer, and in previewOnly: the gallery picture is loaded and converted, an avatar first frame needs a readable avatar, and the selfie choices need selfies to be available. The selfie itself is only taken after review.
    • convo-video-command has a WebP selfie case: the clip starts from the converted PNG, not the avatar.

Should fix

  1. Selfie review. previewOnly now returns the selfie's prompt (selfie: { prompt, negativePrompt, width, height }) and the client shows it in the same review window. The route accepts selfiePromptOverride / selfieNegativePromptOverride, and the reviewed selfie prompt is drawn as left.
  2. Selfies off. The selfie connection only counts when characterCommands !== false && conversationCommandToggles.selfie !== false and a Selfie Connection is set (conversationSelfiesAvailable, the drawer's test). The default First frame then uses the avatar, and "New selfie" answers 400 asking to turn on Generated Selfies.
  3. Cancel and queue.
    • handleConversationSelfieCommand takes optional signal, queue, previewOnly/onPreview and prompt overrides. The video passes its response signal, and the selfie image goes through runImageGenerationRequest.
    • A character's own [selfie] leaves these unset and behaves as before (the existing selfie regressions, including open-issues, pass).
  4. Built-in local model. promptConnectionId keeps chat.connectionId, and only the connection object is null for __local_sidecar__, as the selfie route does. A regression checks the "No text connection" error is gone.
  5. Gallery buttons. In Conversation, Video and Animate show whenever Illustrator is installed. The character picker is out of the onGenerateSelfie && block and serves selfies and video messages.
  6. Response handling. When messageId is null, a short toast says the video was saved to the Gallery's Videos tab. The Gallery queries are invalidated in finally, so a selfie saved before a failure shows up.
  7. Review across chats. The handler closes the review in finally only when it opened it (the resolver was free when it opened), and a per-handler guard keeps one Conversation video action at a time.
  8. Hardening. formatRecentVideoContext starts at the latest isConversationStart (or a start marker for the sending character), and filters with isMessageHiddenFromAIForCharacter. A regression covers both.

Nits

  • registry/conversation.ts comment: fixed in 10c692228.
  • Inline onGenerateVideo / onAnimateImage arrows: now useCallback.
  • --warning: the warning uses the same classes as the identical warning in the Roleplay and Game cards.
  • Copy and labels:
    • The picker is announced as "Character who sends selfies and videos".
    • The Conversation Videos tab says "Video messages" and "Send a video message or animate a picture to fill this tab".
    • The help is one sentence: "Used by /video and the Gallery's Video button."
  • Shared helpers: /generate-scene-video now uses toVideoReferenceImage and generateAndSaveChatVideo (see 2).
  • Peek Prompt (dry-run-route.ts): left as a follow-up, since selfie notes have the same gap and a shared fix covers both. I can open an issue for it.
  • Docs: the card is now Illustrator Settings, the section covers the changes above, and [docs-i18n] docs/conversation/selfies.md, docs/chats/slash-commands.md, docs/media/scene-video.md (video messages) #7650 is updated.
  • Video prompt overrides: the description and help now mention Conversation video messages.

Validation on 295040e09

  • pnpm check passes.
  • convo-video-command passes. Without the server changes it fails at the new checks.
  • The video, gallery, prompt, advanced-memory-recall, slash, image-prompt-guidance and open-issues regressions pass.
  • Full pnpm regression: 882/882 pass.
  • Local CodeRabbit review: not run. The CLI isn't installed on my machine; the GitHub CodeRabbit review runs on this push.

Moving the character picker out of the Selfie block made it its own cell in
the Gallery's button grid, which pushed Video onto a new row. The picker is
back under the Selfie button, with Video beside Selfie as before; when
selfies are off in Conversation and only Video is offered, the picker sits
under Video instead.

Submitted 602ae60 to fix a minor button layout issue when using group conversations (a feature I haven't explored, but am now testing in depth for the next PR which is directly related).

After (the new commit):

Settings profiles leave out every scene… key, since those are one chat's
scene state, with an exception for sceneVideoConnectionId. The First frame
setting (sceneVideoFirstFrame) fell under that rule, so a profile never
saved it and applying one never set it; a new chat always showed the
default. It is now a profile setting like the video connection, and a
profile saved without it leaves the chat's own value.

Regression: chat-profile-followers saves, applies and syncs
sceneVideoFirstFrame, and an older profile without it keeps the chat's
own. Fails without the fix.

After doing more in-depth testing, bfa35de5c fixes a minor issue of the new "First Frame" setting not honoring Chat Settings saved Profiles. I've tested and confirmed it is working as intended now.

…tice colour

- /video refuses a partial name several characters share ("Smith" for
Alice Smith and Bob Smith) and asks for the full name, so a paid clip
never goes to the wrong character. Other commands keep the shared
first-match lookup for now (ponytail note in slash-commands.ts).
- The "video already running" guard is set inside try, so the finally
  that clears it always runs.
- The "No video generation connections found" notice uses the theme's
steady accent token instead of Tailwind amber.

Regression: convo-video-command checks an ambiguous, a unique partial and
an exact /video name. Fails without the fix.

@SpicyMarinara CodeRabbit's review of #7695 (item 4, which is built on this branch) flagged three things in this PR's code. All three are fixed here in eba7c2f51:

  • /video with an ambiguous name: /video Smith with Alice Smith and Bob Smith in the chat used to pick Alice. It now picks no one and asks for the full name (new English string ui.chat.slash.video.ambiguousCharacter). An exact name still wins, and a partial name that matches only one character still works. The shared findSceneCharacter lookup is unchanged, so /selfie, /emote and the other commands still take the first partial match; changing that is a separate follow-up.
  • Video guard: "a video is already running" is now set inside try, so the finally that clears it always runs.
  • "No video generation connections found" notice: now uses text-[var(--marinara-app-accent-static)] instead of Tailwind amber. That also covers your earlier point that the undefined --warning token showed it in plain text.

Validation on eba7c2f51: pnpm check and pnpm localization:check pass, and so do the convo-video, video, gallery, slash, open-issues and localization regressions. The new /video name check fails without the fix. A local CodeRabbit review of the commit found nothing.

CodeQL (7 "high" alerts, the same on #7651 and #7695): every flagged line is existing staging code. CodeQL lists them because this PR's shared video helper adds a new call path into them. I believe they are false positives, so I left the code unchanged:

  • Missing rate limiting on POST /generate-scene-video: every request already goes through the app-wide rateLimitHook (app.ts), which CodeQL doesn't recognize.
  • Uncontrolled data used in path expression in saveVideoToDisk / removeSavedVideoFromDisk (video-generation.ts): each route that reaches them checks the chat id with isValidChatId first, and every path is built through assertInsideDir. Game Mode's existing routes already pass a request chat id into saveVideoToDisk the same way. CodeQL doesn't treat these repo helpers as sanitizers.

If you'd rather silence them in code, I can add a check CodeQL recognizes inside saveVideoToDisk.

The ambiguity check only ran on partial matches, so with two characters
both named "Aster", /video Aster still made a paid clip of the first one.
Exact matches are now counted first, then partial ones; more than one in
either set picks no one. The message also points to the Gallery's
character picker, the way through when two names are identical.

Regression: convo-video-command adds two characters named Aster. Fails
without the fix.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not return a message ID when attachment persistence fails.

attachVideoToMessage resolves when either storage method reports no write. The route then assigns messageId unconditionally. A concurrent message deletion or swipe change can therefore leave a new empty message while the response reports that the video was attached. Return an explicit success value from storage and the helper, based on affected-row or persisted-attachment checks, and set messageId only when both attachment writes succeed. Do not use the current appendSwipeAttachment return value as that check because it has no success contract.

…r video prompt copy

- appendSwipeAttachment returns whether the swipe still existed and got the
attachment, and attachVideoToMessage passes that on. The Conversation
/video route reports a messageId only when the clip landed (an empty new
message is removed otherwise, as on a failed attach), and so does the
  Gallery animate route.
- settings.prompts.video description and help are one short plain sentence
  each.

Regression: convo-video-command attaches to a deleted message (false,

CodeRabbit's outside-diff note from the 18:29 UTC review ("Do not return a message ID when attachment persistence fails", gallery.routes.ts around the Conversation /video attach) is fixed in d3b4e8e76:

  • appendSwipeAttachment now returns whether the swipe still existed and got the attachment (it used to return nothing), and attachVideoToMessage passes that on. The swipe row is the lasting record; the message row only mirrors it while that swipe is shown, so skipping that copy for another active swipe isn't a failure.
  • The Conversation /video route reports a messageId only when the clip landed. Otherwise it is handled like a failed attach: the clip still counts as made and the empty message it created is removed. The Gallery animate route (/generate-scene-video) also reports a messageId only on success.
  • The convo-video-command regression attaches to a deleted message (false, nothing written) and to a live one (true, attachment saved), and fails without the fix.

The same commit also shortens the video prompt editor copy (the inline thread). pnpm check, pnpm localization:check and the related regressions pass, and a local CodeRabbit review of the commit had one doc-comment nit, now folded in. #7695 has this branch merged in.

Thank you, James! I checked every point from my last review against d3b4e8e76. They're all fixed and covered by convo-video-command. I especially like that the selfie is now reviewed together with the clip, and that WebP pictures are converted for Roleplay animations too. Approving.

The CodeQL alerts were false positives, as you said: the chat id is checked by isValidChatId, must belong to an existing chat, and every path goes through assertInsideDir. The rate-limit one is covered by the global hook. I've dismissed them.

A few small things, none blocking. I'll take care of them in a follow-up:

  1. In a Conversation chat without Illustrator, the empty Videos tab still says "Send a video message or animate a picture…". It could say that only when Video or Animate is available (ChatGallery.tsx:1196).
  2. ui.chat.chatgallery.selfieCharacter is no longer used, so it can go from en.json.
  3. After you confirm a review, the window stays open while the clip is made. If someone opens a Roleplay video review in the meantime, this call's cleanup closes it. Roleplay already works this way on staging, so it's a follow-up, not a blocker.
  4. Follow-ups I'm opening: Peek Prompt showing the video and selfie notes, and deleting a clip from the Videos tab leaving an empty video message behind.

chore: polish Conversation video messages and the Secret Plot prompt (#7651, #7657 follow-ups)
SpicyMarinara added a commit to JamesMowery/Marinara-Engine that referenced this pull request Oct 16, 2026
Follow-ups promised in the approving reviews of Pasta-Devs#7651 and Pasta-Devs#7657:

- The empty Videos tab only suggests sending or animating a video when
Video or Animate is available; otherwise it shows the generic text.
- Drop the unused ui.chat.chatgallery.selfieCharacter key.
- A confirmed Conversation video review closes as soon as its prompts are
read, so it no longer sits on "submitting" during the clip request and
that request can't close a Roleplay video review opened meanwhile.
- The Secret Plot prompt help line is one plain sentence.
- New regression: a profile export keeps the three Secret Plot settings
  and still blanks agent credentials.
- narrative-director.md: the Secret Plot prompt section moves after
"The arc stays with the agent"; Reset to default says to save the agent.

attachVideoToMessage now says whether the clip landed (#7651). Illustrator
clips and a character's [video] use it, so a reply deleted while its clip
was made reports the clip with no message instead of a message it isn't on.

Regression: agent-generated-videos deletes the reply while the clip is made
and expects messageId null with no video_error. Fails without the fix.

Uses attachVideoToMessage's result (#7651), like the Conversation /video
and Gallery routes.

…p landed

Uses attachVideoToMessage's result (#7651): a reply deleted while the clip
was made reports the clip with no message.

Regression: roleplay-video-tag deletes the reply mid-clip and expects
messageId null with no video_error. Fails without the fix.
