feat(cli,mcp,sdk,cloud): workspaces default to the cloud; --local/--host for a host; environment-only create - #7564
Conversation
…start from an environment - CLI: `--cloud` on terminals list/read/send/create/close, agents create and workspaces get/open. The API wakes the sandbox and mints a gate ticket; the host-service client talks to the box through the gate like any host. Explicit, never guessed: without --cloud the command looks on this machine or --host, and --cloud with --host is refused. - MCP: terminals_* and agents_create take `cloud: true` instead of hostId. - A cloud workspace starts from an environment, and its repositories are the environment's: cloudWorkspace.create no longer takes repositoryIds, and an environment without repositories (the shared Default) is refused. The desktop create screen drops the repository picker and offers only environments with repositories; CLI/MCP environment defaults follow. CLI, MCP, and SDK operations now resolve cloud, local, and remote-host targets through shared access helpers. Documentation, tests, examples, skills, and translations reflect these interfaces. Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to This change makes cloud the default target for CLI, MCP, and SDK workspace operations and introduces a new client-side ticket cache to reduce sandbox wake-ups. That caching can let a user whose cloud access was just revoked keep reaching their sandbox for hours instead of having access rechecked on every command, and a related caching detail in the SDK client can silently break the documented ability to inspect raw HTTP responses. Combined with several still-open documentation and cleanup gaps (examples that can hang or leave billable sandboxes running, and operations that don't honor cancellation promptly), this PR carries real risk to production authentication and reliability behavior and should not be merged until at least the access-revocation and response-parsing issues are addressed. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Enforce HTTPS for non-local gate URLs. SANDBOX_GATE_ORIGIN accepts http://, and sandboxGateUrl preserves that scheme. The access procedure can therefore return an HTTP URL, causing the resolver to send the bearer ticket over HTTP and derive a ws:// endpoint. Restrict gate origins to https:// except for an explicit loopback development origin, and reject non-HTTPS access.url values before constructing either client.

… for a host `superset ws create` with no location creates a cloud workspace from --environment; --local creates on this machine and --host <id> on another host. --cloud on create is gone. Host-only flags without a location (--project, --session, --checkout, --pr, ...) are refused with a hint to pass --local or --host, so an existing `ws create --project ...` fails loudly instead of starting a billed sandbox, and an account without cloud access gets the same hint on the refusal. Docs, AGENTS.md and the CLI example updated. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01FK6rLzBEUiHHXZWNmpQ2BP

… or --host for a host Satya's rule, strict: workspaces list/get/open/update/delete, terminals * and agents create act on cloud workspaces unless --local or --host <id> names a host; --cloud is gone. The SDK manages cloud workspaces and drives terminals and agents inside them: workspaces list/retrieve/create/update/delete over the cloudWorkspace API, terminals and agents.create through the workspace's sandbox gate with a ticket from cloudWorkspace.access (cached per workspace, refreshed before expiry and every 10 minutes so the sandbox stays awake; the API key and org header are stripped from gate requests). Hosts, projects, automations, agents.list, the relay option and host routing are removed. Docs updated. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01FK6rLzBEUiHHXZWNmpQ2BP

Honor AbortSignal while minting workspace access.
workspaceMutation and workspaceQuery pass _getWorkspaceAccess() to makeRequest() as a promise. makeRequest() awaits that promise before it checks options.signal. On a cold cache, _mintWorkspaceAccess() starts cloudWorkspace.access with wake: true and no caller signal. An already-aborted call can wake the workspace, and a later abort can wait for minting and its retries before cancellation.
Check for an already-aborted signal before starting the mint. Race each caller’s access wait against its signal, but keep the shared _workspaceAccessInflight mint running for other callers.

Add the missing arguments to the host workspace examples.
Project-backed host workspaces require --project and --name. With the default worktree checkout, they also require --branch, --pr, or --task. Session mode is a separate exception and does not apply to these examples.
Use these commands:
- Parallel workspace:
superset workspaces create --local --project <id> --name "<name>" --branch <branch> - PR workspace:
superset workspaces create --local --project <id> --name "<name>" --pr <number> - Setup workspace:
superset workspaces create --local --project <id> --name "setup-test" --branch <branch>
The parallel and setup commands currently fail because they omit source selection. The PR command currently fails because it omits --project. Each project-backed command also fails later at the explicit --name validation if the name is omitted.

A cloud terminal call took ~3.7s on a running sandbox: the API's wake re-ran the whole open sequence (claim, firewall rules, identity write, boot runner, environment push) for a box that answers in tens of milliseconds. Now: - CLI: the ticket from the last call is cached (~/.superset/cloud-workspace- tickets.json, 0600, tickets last 12h) and tried first; then a ticket minted without a wake; the wake only when the sandbox is stopped or the cached address stopped answering. Measured on a running production sandbox: 2.1s first call, 0.4s after (local is 0.35s), 0.9s recovering a stale ticket. `ws get` and `ws open` read the API row and never touch the box. - MCP and SDK mint without a wake and wake only a stopped sandbox; the SDK forgets a ticket after a failed gate call. Reads no longer extend a running sandbox's session. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01FK6rLzBEUiHHXZWNmpQ2BP
cloudWorkspace.hostTicket mints a host-service gate ticket for the address
stored on the row (set at provision, refreshed by a wake) without asking
Vercel. CLI, MCP and SDK use it and wake only when nothing answers there:
a stopped sandbox returns a non-tRPC 502 ("SANDBOX_NOT_LISTENING") in ~130ms.
The gate stays the one way in, so host-service still learns the caller from
the ticket. MCP retries a call once after a wake only when host-service never
answered, so a mutation that reached the box is never repeated.
Verified on a dev sandbox: host ticket + gate call ~350ms vs 500ms no-wake
access and 1.75s wake; after stopping the box the stored-address call failed
fast, the wake took 9.7s, and both ticket kinds answered afterwards (the
address is stable across resume).

…an use it Non-cloud flows must not change. A workspace command without --local or --host now defaults to the cloud only when cloudWorkspace.available says the account has cloud workspaces; everyone else keeps this machine, exactly as before this branch. The CLI caches the answer per organization for an hour (~/.superset/cloud-availability.json) and treats an API that can't answer — offline, or older than this query — as unavailable, so version skew falls back to local, never to the cloud. MCP keeps hostId required for accounts without cloud access. Help text and docs say so; browser command docs are back to "default: this machine" (a bulk replace had changed them). Verified against production (which lacks the new query): `ws list`, `terminals list` and `ws create --project` without --local all took the this-machine path. Do not parse the response to observe transport failure.
promise.then() invokes APIPromise.parse(). This consumes the response body before a caller can use asResponse(). A successful raw gate response can therefore arrive with an already-consumed body.

The cloud-default change prompted us to separate cached capability from present connectivity in a small experiment. At 73379a1, we ran the original resolveWorkspaceHost and resolveHostFlags functions with controlled filesystem, clock and API collaborators across eight cases. We did not launch a cloud workspace. A fresh positive capability cache selected the cloud path with zero API calls even when the simulated API was offline. Once that cache expired, the same offline condition selected local. Explicit --local and --host kept their precedence. Would a regression case and a short documentation note for that pair be useful? It makes the fallback contract precise: offline fallback happens when availability must be refreshed, whereas a valid positive cache preserves the cloud default. This is about target selection, separate from the cached gate-ticket authorization discussion already here. |

Host tRPC calls share the chat path through the relay with the traded JWT. `hosts.list` sends that JWT instead of the API key because the API forwards the caller's bearer token to the relay for presence; with the key alone every host read as offline.
Do not merge yet. Satya asked for a PR to review, not a ship.
The rule
Workspace commands default to the cloud only for accounts that can use cloud workspaces. That's decided by the new
cloudWorkspace.availablequery. Everyone else keeps this machine as the default, exactly as before, so non-cloud flows don't change.--localor--host <id>always picks a host.~/.superset/cloud-availability.json.hostIdrequired for accounts without cloud access.Verified against production, which lacks the new query:

That endpoint signs a ticket for the address stored on the workspace row, with no Vercel lookup. The CLI wakes the sandbox only when nothing answers there. A stopped box returns a non-tRPC 502,SANDBOX_NOT_LISTENING, in about 130ms. The MCP tools and the SDK use the same host ticket and wake fallback. The MCP retries a call after a wake only when host-service never answered, so a mutation that reached the box is never repeated. Against production, with a CLI binary built from this branch:

terminals send/create/closeandagents createweren't run against the live box. They use the same client aslistandread.cloudWorkspace.hostTicket, so the API has to deploy before a CLI release. An old API would answer that call with NOT_FOUND.ws create. Not exercised end to end, to avoid starting a sandbox. Not in this PR
