feat(sdk): chat sessions, host event feed, and host workspaces again - #8184
harshithmullapudi wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
…paces Adds `chat` (createSession, listSessions, retrieveSession, listItems, prompt, cancelTurn, respondToApproval, setMode, setConfigOption, closeSession, subscribe) and `events.subscribe` to the SDK, so a client like Roster can start and drive agent sessions without the desktop. Calls go to a host through the relay when a `hostId` is set, per call or on the client, and otherwise to the named cloud workspace's sandbox. The relay accepts only a user JWT, so an API key is traded for one at `/api/auth/token` and cached until it nears expiry.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe SDK adds host and workspace management, Chat operations, and Events subscriptions. The client routes calls through a host relay or a cloud workspace sandbox. The package exports the new resources and socket types, with documentation and tests for the added APIs. ChangesSDK Host, Chat, and Events

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Listing host workspaces can fail. Reading the raw response from a host call does not work reliably. A misconfigured relay URL could send credentials without encryption. Fix these issues before merging. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The new host APIs can send reusable credentials over an unencrypted connection when a non-HTTPS relay is configured. The HTTPS default and existing organization and host-access checks limit exposure, but a stolen credential could authorize transcript access and agent operations beyond the original request. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
The example fails for cloud workspaces when you follow the omit hostId comment.
_resolveHost throws SupersetError when the call has no hostId and no workspaceId. Several calls in the example name only sessionId or no target:
chat.promptevents.subscribechat.subscribechat.respondToApproval
If you omit hostId, each of these calls fails. Add workspaceId to these calls in the cloud example. Alternatively, state that the cloud path needs workspaceId on every call.

Guard event.type against non-object JSON frames.
subscribeJSON passes on any value that parses as JSON. A text frame such as null reaches the onMessage handler as null. Line 19 then reads event.type and throws a TypeError inside the socket listener. Before calling onEvent, skip any message that is not an object.

Cloud subscriptions cannot wake sandboxes
When a cloud sandbox stops, chat.subscribe and events.subscribe cannot wake it, even if the caller retries. hostSocketURL discards the target's forget() callback. Socket failures therefore never clear the cached ticket or mark the workspace for cloudWorkspace.access({ wake: true }). Even after the ticket expires, another subscription calls the non-waking hostTicket again.
Keep the resolved target through the socket lifecycle and mark failed connections for the existing wake path.

_getRelayURL keeps its first successful result for the client's entire lifetime. If the API changes RELAY_URL and the host reconnects to the new relay, this client keeps sending chat calls and subscriptions to the old address. Failed host calls clear only _hostToken, so retries cannot recover without a new client.
Give the relay lookup a short expiry or clear it after a failed host connection.

ChatEnvelope leaves the useful transcript and live-update fields as unknown. Checking event.type === "item" still cannot give callers a typed event.item, and delta.append is also unknown. Clients reading messages or displaying streamed text must recreate the private protocol types or add unchecked casts.
Define self-contained types for the supported event and delta shapes, with an explicit fallback for future event types.

Cloud example stops after creation
The example says to omit hostId for cloud workspaces, but every call after createSession also needs workspaceId in that case. Following that instruction makes prompt, both subscriptions, and respondToApproval fail because the client does not remember which workspace owns sessionId.
Show the cloud variant with workspaceId on each call, or label this example as host-only and remove the instruction to omit hostId.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.#7564 made the SDK cloud-only and removed host routing. Roster needs worktrees on people's machines as well as in the cloud, so host workspaces return under `client.hosts`, apart from the cloud `workspaces` API: `hosts.list`, `hosts.projects.list`, and `hosts.workspaces.list/create/createSession/update/delete`, with `tags` on create and update. Host tRPC calls share the chat path through the relay with the traded JWT. `hosts.list` sends that JWT instead of the API key because the API forwards the caller's bearer token to the relay for presence; with the key alone every host read as offline.

Omit undefined input from host queries.
HostWorkspaces.list() passes undefined to hostQuery. _hostRequest serializes it as {"json":null} and sends it as the GET input. The workspace.list schema accepts omitted input but rejects null, so this call can fail validation instead of listing workspaces. Send an empty query object when input is undefined.

Do not parse the response to install the failure handler.
The .then at Line 849 invokes APIPromise.then, which starts response parsing. Update the host request failure tracking around _trackedRequest to observe
transport failures without calling APIPromise.then, so asResponse() can read the
raw body; retain cache invalidation for parsed-response failures through a
separate path.

Handle a null branch in workspace search.
If a workspace response has branch: null and its name does not match a non-empty search, list() can throw when it calls toLowerCase(). Make branch nullable and skip the branch comparison when it is null.

Update the workspace type used by `list()` to allow `branch` to be null, and
skip the branch search when it is null while preserving name matching and
case-insensitive branch matching for non-null values.

Folded into #8168 to keep this in one PR. |
Summary
Re-adds host routing that #7564 removed. I could not find a reason for the removal in that PR, its commits or its reviews. The removed code used the same API-key-to-JWT exchange this PR uses.
The SDK can now start and drive agent chat sessions, and receive a host's live events. This lets an external client such as Roster create a session in a workspace, follow its status, send messages, answer approvals and read the transcript, without the desktop app.
New API
client.chat:createSession({ workspaceId, harness, modeId?, modelId?, resumeHarnessSessionId? })listSessions, retrieveSession, listItemsprompt(takes a plain string or content blocks)cancelTurn, respondToApproval, setMode, setConfigOption, closeSessionsubscribe({ sessionId, since?, deltas?, onEnvelope }): the session's live streamclient.events.subscribe({ onChatSessionChanged?, onEvent? }): the host's/eventsfeed.client.hosts: brings back what feat(cli, mcp, sdk, cloud): workspaces default to the cloud; --local/--host for a host; environment-only create #7564 removed when it made the SDK cloud-only. It is a separate namespace, so the cloudworkspacesAPI is unchanged.hosts.list()hosts.projects.list({ hostId? })hosts.workspaces.list/create/createSession/update/delete, withtagsoncreateandupdate.creategenerates a retryidwhen you omit it./trpcrouter (SuperJSON) through the relay.hostIddefaults to the client's.hosts.listsends the user JWT, not the API key. The API forwards the caller's bearer token to the relay to check presence, so with the key alone every host would showonline: false. It lists only the hosts the key's user is linked to.@superset/chator@superset/chat-runtimepackages, so the published bundle stays self-contained.Where calls go
Every
chatandeventscall takeshostIdandworkspaceId:hostIdis set on the call or on the client. The call goes to{relay}/hosts/{organizationId}:{hostId}. The relay URL comes fromhost.relayEndpoint, falling back tohttps://relay.superset.shlike the CLI.cloudWorkspace.hostTicket/access).Chat-v3 is a separate tRPC router at
/chat-v3/trpcwith no SuperJSON transformer, so these calls send and parse plain JSON ({ result: { data } }).Auth
The relay accepts only a user JWT checked against
/api/auth/jwks. With ansk_…API key, the SDK callsGET /api/auth/tokenonce:enableSessionForAPIKeysturns thex-api-keyrequest into a session.jwtplugin issues the token. The SDK caches the JWT until a minute before its
exp, and drops it after a failed host call. Only the JWT goes to the relay. A credential that is not ansk_key is already sent as a bearer token, so it goes to the relay as is.WebSockets use the global
WebSocket(Node 22+, Bun, Deno, browsers), or the newWebSocketclient option. The token goes in?token=, which both the relay and the gate accept.Depends on
chat:session-changed.ChatSessionChangedEvent.removedmatches that PR's current shape. Hosts without it never send the event, so callers should keeplistSessionsas a fallback.Test plan

The API key to JWT exchange is checked by reading better-auth 1.6.22 (
@better-auth/api-keybefore-hook andjwt/token), not by a live call. Not bumped: the SDK version, and
apps/docs/content/docs/sdk/reference.mdx. That page already describes a different SDK surface than this package.Summary by cubic
The SDK can now start and drive agent chat sessions and receive a host's live events, letting an external client like Roster work without the desktop app.
Adds
client.chat(create, list, retrieve, prompt, cancel, approve, set mode and config, close, and live subscribe),client.events.subscribefor the host event feed, andclient.hostsfor listing host machines and managing their projects and workspaces. Calls target a host through the relay whenhostIdis set, otherwise the named cloud workspace's sandbox. The relay accepts only a user JWT, so API keys are traded once for a JWT at/api/auth/tokenand cached until near expiry.Details
/chat-v3tRPC router with plain JSON instead of SuperJSON.WebSocket; older runtimes pass one via theWebSocketclient option.hosts.listsends the JWT instead of the API key so the API can check host presence at the relay.chat:session-changed; hosts without it never send the event, so keeplistSessionsas a fallback.Written for commit b72d9a0. Summary will update on new commits.
