docs(sandbox): file the provisioning-row reaper as an open task - #6559
Conversation
A create that dies between inserting the row and reporting the sandbox leaves a cloud_workspaces row in provisioning forever — the sidebar shows a workspace that cannot open and nothing ever looks at the row again. It happened for real when a production create hit the API function's 60s limit, and one row from that incident had to be cleared by hand.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe cloud sandbox documentation now describes interrupted provisioning failures, their effects on workspace access, an observed timeout incident, and required cleanup actions. ChangesCloud sandbox failure handling
Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~2 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The documentation should specify race-safe cleanup so an in-flight create cannot restore a failed workspace or recreate its sandbox after reaping. The PR is otherwise mergeable with owner awareness and follow-up on this bounded correctness risk. Possibly related PRs

Make the stale-row sweep race-safe.
The create procedure in packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/cloud-workspace.ts:105-218 updates the row to ready by ID only. If a still-running create crosses the age threshold, the sweep can mark the row failed and delete its sandbox. The request can then restore ready.
Define an atomic claim or cancellation state for the sweep. Require the success update to match the active provisioning state. Re-check the state before provisioning to prevent a sandbox from being created after the sweep.
Proposed wording
-Wanted: a sweep that fails rows older than a few minutes and tears down any sandbox they name, plus the same teardown on the paths that can't currently reach it.
+Wanted: a race-safe sweep that atomically claims rows still in `provisioning`, prevents an in-flight create from restoring `ready`, and tears down any sandbox they name. The create path must re-check the claim before provisioning, and its success update must match the active `provisioning` state.📝 Committable suggestion

Adds the missing task to
docs/cloud-sandbox-considerations.md.A create that dies between inserting the
cloud_workspacesrow and reporting the sandbox leaves that row inprovisioningforever: the sidebar shows a workspace that can't open, accessrefuses it because the status isn'tready, and nothing ever looks at the row again. This isn't hypothetical — a production create hit the API function's 60s limit mid-bootstrap (fixed in #6555), and the row outlived the sandbox it named. Provisioning is ~5s now, so the window is small rather than closed: a killed function, a provider timeout or a crash still lands there.
Wanted: a sweep that fails rows older than a few minutes and tears down any sandbox they name, plus the same teardown on the paths that can't currently reach it.
