  • Decision log: apps/mobile/plans/20260817-cloud-workspaces.md
  • Follow-up ticket: SUPER-1915 (media/artifacts on mobile)

Summary

  • Cloud workspaces (Blaxel sandboxes) on iOS with parity to the desktop's cloud surface: a Cloud section on Home, open a sandbox and drive its terminal, provisioning/failed states, rename/delete via the cloud router, gated by the cloud-workspaces flag + the API's internal-only check.
  • Two fixes found on the way that affect desktop too: deleteSandbox never recognised the SDK's not-found (removing a failed workspace 500'd), and the builtin Claude agent refuses to launch as root in a sandbox (IS_SANDBOX=1 + baked Bypass Permissions acceptance; needs an image rebuild to land).

Why / Context

Desktop shipped cloud workspaces (#6505, #6555, #6566). Mobile reached host-service only through the relay by routing key; a sandbox has no host row, no presence, no relay path — it is reached directly at a brokered preview URL with a short-lived token. This PR gives mobile that second address source without cloud-specific code in every hook.

How It Works

  • A sandbox is a pseudo-host keyed by the cloud workspace id (as on desktop). hostServiceUrl(org, machineId) replaces buildRelayHostUrl and resolves sandbox addresses from lib/sandbox-access; the HTTP client attaches X-Blaxel-Preview-Token per URL. Every hook that addresses hosts by id — terminals, git status, projects, agents — reaches the sandbox unchanged.
  • useCloudWorkspaces (1s poll while provisioning) + useSandboxAccess mint for every ready row, re-mint at 80% TTL, on AppState active, and at dial time if stale (iOS freezes timers). useCloudWorkspaceItems restates each sandbox's served row under the cloud id; useWorkspaceHost resolves cloud ids first and lets the cloud row own the name.
  • The terminal WebView signs sandbox dials with bl_preview_token on every attempt. The desktop's terminal socket works only because the edge sets an HttpOnly bl_preview_token cookie that Electron replays; WKWebView has its own cookie store, so mobile can't inherit that (recorded in docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md).
  • Home: Cloud section pinned above projects, visible regardless of the host filter and in the host-offline state; rows reuse WorkspaceRow (spinner while provisioning, red dot when failed, + disabled until ready); useHostsTerminals fans out over sandbox hosts; PR badges use cloudWorkspace.repoForProject.
  • Workspace screen: CloudWorkspaceProvisioningState (steps, elapsed, stuck hint; failed + Remove) until the sandbox serves the row. Row menu / actions sheet / header actions route rename and delete to cloudWorkspace.rename/delete; the actions sheet drops the Host row for cloud.

Manual QA Checklist (done on the iPhone 16e simulator against two live Blaxel sandboxes through this worktree's local API)

  • Cloud section lists live sandboxes; session marks and diff pills resolve over sandbox hosts
  • Open → terminal socket connects (query-param token) → composer terminal.send → output streams back
  • Row + → composer → agents.run in the sandbox → new tab opens
  • New-session sheet lists the sandbox's agents; sessions sheet close → terminal.killSession
  • Provisioning row + screen; failed row + screen; Remove from the failed screen deletes
  • Row long-press menu: Rename/Delete/Copy ID/Share on ready rows, Delete only on failed rows, nothing destructive while provisioning
  • Rename (row menu and actions sheet) writes the cloud row; list and title follow
  • Actions sheet: project from the sandbox, no Host row, Delete offered
  • Changes / files-changed diff / commits answer from the sandbox
  • Not exercised: an overnight background token-expiry cycle (re-mint paths are in place); PR-icon tap (needs an open PR on the branch)

Testing

  • bun run typecheck (mobile, host-service, trpc)
  • bun run lint
  • Manual, as above; screenshots in the internal report shared with @satya

Design Decisions

  • Pseudo-host + registry instead of threading URLs through every hook: the same shape desktop uses (hostId = cloud id, credentials keyed by URL); 16 hooks kept their signatures.
  • Explicit bl_preview_token on every terminal dial: correct regardless of the edge cookie; the desktop should do the same rather than rely on /events having dialled first.
  • Cloud row owns the name: rename never reaches the sandbox's copy, so the served row's name is overridden with the cloud row's.

Known Limitations

  • Create from mobile is PR B (interim cloudWorkspace.listProjects + App-token listBranches, sectioned project sheet). Externally created rows appear on the next 30s poll or pull-to-refresh.
  • The host-service/image change for Claude only reaches new sandboxes after an image rebuild.
  • cloud_workspaces.project_id still points at retired v2_projects; the environments direction is written into docs/cloud-sandbox-considerations.md.

Follow-ups

  • PR B: create from the composer.
  • Sandbox launches the agent from the prompt itself; sandbox attachments to blob storage (both in the docs).
  • SUPER-1915: media/artifacts on mobile.

Summary by cubic

Cloud workspaces on iOS: list, open, and run terminals by reaching each sandbox directly via a brokered preview URL with a short‑lived token. Previously mobile only reached relay hosts; now host resolution prefers a sandbox when the id is a cloud workspace, and terminals authenticate per dial.

  • Host routing and auth: hostServiceUrl(org, id) resolves a relay URL or a sandbox URL; the HTTP client attaches X-Blaxel-Preview-Token by URL. TerminalWebView now takes a host object and signs WebSocket dials with bl_preview_token when the host is a sandbox.
  • Cloud data and access: useCloudWorkspaces lists all rows (provisioning/ready/failed), polls at 1s while provisioning, and prunes stale sandbox grants. useSandboxAccess mints/refreshes addresses for ready rows (80% TTL, on foreground, and on dial if stale) and fully retires credentials on scope loss or URL changes (epoch guards stop mid‑flight mints from resurrecting retired grants). Delete failures on failed rows are surfaced.
  • Home: adds a Cloud section above projects, visible even if the selected host is offline (offline takeover waits for the cloud list). Rows reuse WorkspaceRow with provisioning/failed treatment. Session marks and attention fan out over machine + sandbox hosts via useHostsTerminals (30s for sandboxes on the list; an open screen observing the same key at 5s wins). PR badges for cloud rows use cloudWorkspace.repoForProject.
  • Workspace: shows a provisioning/failed screen until the sandbox serves; hides tabs until live. Rename/delete route to the cloud router; the Host row is omitted for cloud.
  • Fixes: packages/trpc deletion now recognizes provider not‑found. packages/host-service sets IS_SANDBOX=1 for sandbox PTYs; the sandbox image bakes Bypass Permissions acceptance for Claude. Docs record the edge‑cookie dependency, Claude findings, and the environments direction.
  • Gated by the cloud-workspaces PostHog flag and an API internal‑account check.

Migration

  • Replace buildRelayHostUrl with hostServiceUrl wherever host-service URLs or terminal dials are built.
  • Rebuild the sandbox image and create new sandboxes to pick up the Claude fix.
  • Ensure your org is entitled and the flag is enabled.

Written for commit 3acc6bb. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added mobile cloud workspace support, including listing, search, sorting, refresh, terminal access, and workspace lookup.
    • Added provisioning and failure screens with progress details, recovery, and removal options.
    • Added cloud workspace rename and delete actions with confirmation prompts.
    • Added secure sandbox access with automatic credential refresh.
    • Added cloud-specific status indicators and disabled actions during provisioning.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved host routing and handling of missing sandbox workspaces.
    • Improved terminal environment setup and sandbox authentication.
    • Prevented cleared sandbox credentials from being restored by in-flight requests.

The SDK's not-found error carries the status on the object, not in the
message — its message is empty — so a text match alone left a workspace
whose sandbox never came up (a failed provision, or one already torn down)
refusing deletion with a 500 on both apps.
…t in a sandbox

The builtin agent runs `claude --dangerously-skip-permissions`, and a sandbox
runs as root, so picking Claude in a cloud workspace exited with "cannot be
used with root/sudo privileges". Claude allows the flag under root when
IS_SANDBOX=1 is set (verified from a sandbox terminal), then asks once to
accept Bypass Permissions mode; the image now bakes that acceptance too.
Takes effect for new sandboxes once the image is rebuilt.
…actions

Brings the desktop's cloud workspace surface to iOS. A sandbox joins the app
as its own pseudo-host keyed by the workspace id: hostServiceUrl() resolves
it to the brokered preview URL, the HTTP client attaches the preview token
per URL, and the terminal WebView signs every dial with bl_preview_token
(WKWebView has its own cookie store, so it can't ride the edge cookie the
desktop's terminal socket relies on). Access is minted for every ready row,
re-minted at 80% TTL, on foreground, and at dial time if stale.

Home gets a Cloud section pinned above the projects; rows reuse WorkspaceRow
with provisioning/failed treatment; terminals, diff stats and PR badges fan
out over sandbox hosts. The workspace screen shows the provisioning and
failed states before a sandbox serves anything; rename and delete route to
the cloud router. Also records the edge-cookie finding, the Claude-as-root
trap and the environments direction in the sandbox docs.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 3acc6

This PR adds direct mobile access to cloud workspaces using short-lived preview credentials. At the current head, sandbox grants can survive or be restored after revocation and can remain across organization changes, risking continued access to a superseded or prior-organization sandbox; these access-isolation issues should be fixed before merge.

…al fan-out

Three edges from review: the cloud list now prunes the sandbox-access
registry (module state survived sign-out and org switches), each sandbox's
terminal poll runs at 30s for list decoration — the open workspace's screen
still observes the same query key at 5s and wins while mounted (#6570's
lesson) — and the synthesized home-list row documents exactly which fields
are invented for an unserved sandbox and why nothing reads them.

Record the destructive migration order.

Before removing v2_projects, backfill every cloud_workspaces row to the environment model, verify that no mappings are orphaned, and remove the cascade FK. Otherwise, dropping the table can delete all cloud workspaces. Add these checks and rollback criteria to the migration plan.

Include organizationId in the query key.

The query input contains projectId and organizationId, but the key contains only projectId. With staleTime: Number.POSITIVE_INFINITY, the first result cached for a projectId is reused for any organization that later requests the same projectId. Key the query by the full input so the cache entry matches what was fetched.

Make sandbox credential eviction complete.

clearSandboxAccess and pruneSandboxAccess do not retire inflight requests. A mint that started before deletion, sign-out, or an organization switch can resolve later and restore its grant in accessByWorkspaceId.

A renewed grant with a changed url also leaves the previous previewTokenByUrl entry intact. Later cleanup deletes only the current URL entry. A stale HTTP client can therefore still obtain a preview token for the old URL.

Track a per-workspace invalidation generation. Reject mints from an earlier generation. Remove a previous URL mapping before storing a changed URL. Remove an inflight entry only when it still points to the same promise.

**environment**: an org-scoped definition of what a sandbox contains — repos
(0..n, one primary), setup commands, env var names, base image/version, and

references the environment plus the primary repo's branch. Keep v1 of that

schema: host-service assumes one workspace is one git root, and multi-repo or

Enforce the primary-repository invariant at the persistence boundary.

If environments can be written by concurrent requests or multiple clients, validation alone cannot guarantee exactly one primary repository. Concurrent writes can create zero or multiple primaries while host-service assumes one git root. Add database and transaction-level enforcement for the invariant, and retain API validation for user-facing errors.

Sequence the image rollout before enabling Claude in cloud workspaces.

These fixes are inactive until the sandbox image is rebuilt. Verify that the rebuilt image is deployed before enabling the feature. Otherwise, claude --dangerously-skip-permissions will still exit under root in newly provisioned sandboxes.

**A cloud workspace is tied to a `v2_projects` row, and that table is already
retired. Open.** #6436 decoupled the app from cloud `v2_projects` and dropped
the FKs that pointed at it "ahead of the table's removal"; nothing writes a row
there any more. Three days later `cloud_workspaces.project_id` landed as a
cascade FK into it, and `create` / provisioning resolve the repo to clone from
that row. So only projects that still have a legacy row can get a cloud
workspace, the desktop picker offers projects the API then rejects, and
dropping the table would cascade-delete every cloud workspace. The mobile port
lists the rows that resolve to a repo through an interim
`cloudWorkspace.listProjects`, fenced as such.

Migrate the workspace flow before enabling this dependency.

packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/cloud-workspace.ts (Lines 57-292) and packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/provision.ts (Lines 48-156) still resolve projectId through v2Projects. The local-first plan retires that table, so new projects without legacy rows cannot create or provision cloud workspaces. Dropping the table can also cascade-delete existing cloud_workspaces rows. Move these paths to the environment and primary-repository model before removing the gate, or keep the feature disabled until migration is complete.

…failures

From CodeRabbit's pass: a mint already in flight when its workspace was
retired can no longer land afterwards and resurrect credentials (per-
workspace epoch), a renewed preview that moved URLs retires the old URL's
token entry, losing the cloud scope entirely (sign-out, flag off) prunes
explicitly instead of waiting on a disabled query, the failed-workspace
Remove surfaces its error instead of logging it, and the host-offline
takeover waits for the cloud list before claiming there is nothing to show.

matchesQuery searches Cloud rows, but resolves projectId only through the selected host's projectNamesById map. Cloud project-name searches therefore exclude matching Cloud rows. Match against workspace.projectName or provide Cloud project names to the matcher.
