What & why

Merging a pull request from the phone. Replaces the merge button on the diff screen with a dedicated pull request screen, reached from a chip above the workspace composer (or a list sheet when a branch has several PRs).

The screen

  • Header: status pill, diffstat (tap → files changed), title. No bar title — the PR names itself. Copy-link button and a native … menu (Copy link · Open in GitHub · Share) as separate glass buttons; copying shows a transient "Copied Link" pill in the bar.
  • State card: one headline naming what the PR is waiting on (Waiting for Review, Resolve Conflicts to Merge, Blocked by Branch Rules, Ready to Merge, …), rows justifying it (checks tally with progress ring, reviewers), and only the actions GitHub would accept. Merge stays offered through running or failed checks; a missing approval removes it. Merge confirms with number, title and method before calling github.mergePR, and refetches after.
  • Sheets: checks (native segmented filter in the header — All 19 · Failed 0 · Passed 19 — with a Fix All toolbar button when anything failed), check detail, reviewers, and the PR list. All native headers with X close.
  • Description: rendered with react-native-enriched-markdown (not the streaming wrapper), HTML stripped (bot badges, comments, <picture> blocks; fenced and inline code preserved), clamped at 280pt behind a native blur + fade with See More/See Less.

Host service

  • New getPullRequestDetail: one GraphQL round trip for mergeability, per-viewer capabilities, checks with isRequired, reviewers, threads, queue, allowed merge methods, body.
  • Reads reviewDecision — the only field that sees rulesets. This repo requires review through a ruleset, so branchProtectionRule is null and requiredApprovals reads 0; without reviewDecision a review-blocked PR read "Blocked by Branch Rules" instead of "Waiting for Review".
  • Capabilities are permission-only; mergeability is a separate signal so the button doesn't vanish while GitHub is still computing it (spinner instead).

Shared

  • One pullRequestStatus module colours the home rows, the workspace chip and the PR list — three copies collapsed to one.
  • +not-found route with a Go home escape.

Deps: expo-linear-gradient (new native module — rebuild the dev client), @react-native-masked-view/masked-view (already compiled in via expo-router; added as a direct dep so it resolves).

How I tested it

Local stack (api + relay + desktop host) against the per-worktree DB, driven on the iOS simulator with Maestro. Verified live against #6492 (review-required, 19 green checks) and a merged PR for the merged card. Every card state was diffed across a fixture set before/after the mergeability change; identical output.

Screenshots: workspace chip → PR list → PR screen → checks sheet → reviewers sheet (strip attached below).

Not verified, worth a human tap:

  • The merge itself has never executed — I never merged a real PR. The confirm flow was verified on the old diff screen this PR deletes.
  • The "Copied Link" pill's slide animation and the four-segment checks filter (needs a PR mid-CI) are code-verified only.

Known gaps, deliberate:

  • Mark Ready / Update Branch / Reopen / Dequeue alert "Not available yet" — no host procedures. Same reason the … menu omits Rename and Close PR.
  • allowedMergeMethods comes from repo settings (all three) while the ruleset permits squash only.
  • Inline-code highlight sits ~2pt high at line-height 22: the library draws it from the line fragment top; a limit of the renderer, documented in constants.ts.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The mobile app replaces workspace diff review with pull-request screens, live GitHub detail loading, checks and reviewer sheets, merge actions, workspace pull-request navigation, refreshed empty states, and expanded Storybook support.

Changes

GitHub pull-request data and workspace integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
GitHub detail contract and state model
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/github/github.ts, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/utils/pullRequest/*, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/pull-request/[pullRequestId]/utils/*
The host service exposes normalized pull-request details and maps merge errors to tRPC errors. Mobile utilities define pull-request, check, status, action, and mergeability models.
Workspace pull-request integration
apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/WorkspaceScreen/*, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/hooks/*, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/(home)/home/*
Workspace screens load pull requests, resolve repository data, refresh workspace data, rank queued pull requests, and replace changeset navigation.
Pull-request routes and actions
apps/mobile/app/(authenticated)/_layout.tsx, apps/mobile/app/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/pull-request/*, apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/pull-request/*
Authenticated routes render pull-request lists, detail screens, checks, reviewers, and individual checks. The detail screen supports link actions, refresh, changed-file navigation, and merge confirmation.
Pull-request cards and related sheets
apps/mobile/screens/(authenticated)/workspace/[id]/pull-request/[pullRequestId]/components/*
The mobile UI renders pull-request headers, descriptions, state-based actions, checks, reviewers, status icons, detail sheets, and related Storybook scenarios.
Mobile routing and Storybook support
apps/mobile/.rnstorybook/*, apps/mobile/app/+not-found.tsx, apps/mobile/package.json
Storybook discovers screen stories and supports full-bleed previews. The app adds a custom not-found screen and rendering dependencies.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3ffd4

This PR adds mobile pull-request review and merge flows, but the current head can expose merge actions GitHub will reject, submit unsupported merge methods, and compute readiness from incomplete checks or review threads; some PR states and reviewer information can also be displayed incorrectly. These issues can mislead users and cause failed merge attempts, so the PR is not merge-ready without fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

Consider making MERGE_METHODS readonly.

useAllowedMergeMethods returns this module-level array by reference in the fallback path. A readonly type prevents accidental in-place mutation of the shared fallback.

♻️ Proposed change
-export const MERGE_METHODS: MergeMethod[] = ["squash", "merge", "rebase"];
+export const MERGE_METHODS: readonly MergeMethod[] = [
+	"squash",
+	"merge",
+	"rebase",

The return type of useAllowedMergeMethods then becomes readonly MergeMethod[].

Optional: the delayed invalidation timer is never cancelled.

setTimeout runs after the screen unmounts. invalidateQueries on the shared queryClient is harmless in that case, so this is not a defect. If you want deterministic cleanup, store the timer id and clear it in an effect teardown.

Consider a lookup map instead of the nested ternary.

A Record<MergeMethod, boolean> keeps the mapping between method and repository flag explicit. The compiler then reports a missing entry if a new merge method is added.

🧹 Preview Cleanup Complete

The following preview resources have been cleaned up:

  • ✅ Neon database branch

Thank you for your contribution! 🎉

The Changes screen was read-only. It now offers a merge for any open,
non-draft PR — desktop's gating — behind an iOS method sheet plus a
destructive confirm naming the PR number, title, method and base branch.

Merge methods come from the repo's own settings (github.getRepo), falling
back to all three when they can't be read. Failures surface GitHub's own
wording, and host-service's mergePR now translates GitHub's rejections
(conflict, branch protection, stale head) into non-500 tRPC codes so they
stop paging Sentry as host bugs.
…escription

Replaces the diff-screen merge button with a dedicated pull request screen:
a state card that names what the PR is waiting on and offers the actions
GitHub would accept, sheets for checks (segmented filter in the native
header), check detail and reviewers, the PR description rendered as
markdown with an HTML strip and a blur-fade clamp, and a header with copy
link and a native actions menu.

Host-service gains getPullRequestDetail (one GraphQL round trip) and now
reads reviewDecision, which is the only field that sees rulesets.

Home and workspace surfaces read PR state from one shared status module,
and the workspace shows a chip that opens the PR or a list when there are
several. Adds expo-linear-gradient and @react-native-masked-view (both
already compiled into the dev client via expo-router).

Scope pull-request detail to the current GitHub source.

The query key omits hostUrl, owner, and repo, so it can reuse detail from a previous source. The hook also returns cached detail when ready is false. Return null when ready is false, include all source coordinates in the query key, and add a regression test for coordinate changes with the same workspace and pull number.

Require an explicit supported merge-method selection.

confirmAndMerge always uses the first allowed method. The user cannot select another supported method.

When allowedMergeMethods is empty, the "squash" fallback submits a method that the repository did not allow. Do not show a destructive merge confirmation in that case.

Present the available methods first. Then show the destructive confirmation for the selected method.

Reconcile MERGE_REFUSED with the stated merge availability rule.

The PR objectives state that the merge action stays available when reviews are missing, and the comment on Line 115 states that only GitHub refusals remove it. MERGE_REFUSED includes "waiting-for-review", and resolvePullRequestState reaches that state from the locally computed mergeability.approvals < mergeability.requiredApprovals comparison. In that path the merge action disappears without any GitHub refusal.

Decide which behavior is intended. If merge must stay offered for missing reviews, drop "waiting-for-review" from MERGE_REFUSED. If it must be hidden, update the comment and the PR description.

GitHub GraphQL MergeStateStatus enum DRAFT official documentation

💡 Result:

The DRAFT value in the GitHub GraphQL API MergeStateStatus enum indicates that a pull request cannot be merged because it is currently in a draft state [1][2]. However, it is important to note that the DRAFT status is deprecated [3]. GitHub recommends using the isDraft field on the PullRequest object instead of relying on the MergeStateStatus enum to determine if a pull request is a draft [3]. The MergeStateStatus enum provides detailed information about a pull request's mergeability and includes the following values [1]: - BEHIND: The head ref is out of date. - BLOCKED: The merge is blocked. - CLEAN: The pull request is mergeable and has a passing commit status. - DIRTY: The merge commit cannot be cleanly created. - DRAFT: The merge is blocked due to the pull request being a draft (deprecated). - HAS_HOOKS: The pull request is mergeable with a passing commit status and pre-receive hooks. - UNKNOWN: The state cannot currently be determined. - UNSTABLE: The pull request is mergeable with a non-passing commit status.

Add "DRAFT" to MergeStateStatus.

GitHub GraphQL PullRequest viewerCanUpdate meaning author permission

💡 Result:

In the GitHub GraphQL API, the viewerCanUpdate field is a boolean property available on objects that implement the Updatable interface, including the PullRequest object [1][2]. It indicates whether the currently authenticated user (the "viewer") has the necessary permissions to perform an update on that specific object [3][1]. For a PullRequest, this permission is not determined solely by authorship. Instead, it is determined by the viewer's access level within the context of the repository. Generally, to update a pull request (such as changing its title or body), a user must have write access to the repository or be the author of the pull request [4]. Because viewerCanUpdate accounts for these repository-level permissions and roles, it returns true if the authenticated user has sufficient authorization to execute an update mutation, such as updatePullRequest, and false otherwise [3][4].

site:docs.github.com GraphQL PullRequest viewerCanUpdate viewerCanMergeAsAdmin Repository viewerPermission merge pull request permissions

💡 Result:

In the GitHub GraphQL API, you can determine a user's permissions and ability to perform actions on pull requests using several fields on the PullRequest and Repository objects. Pull Request Permissions and Status The PullRequest object provides specific boolean fields to indicate if the current user (the viewer) can perform certain actions: - viewerCanMergeAsAdmin (Boolean!): Indicates whether the viewer has the necessary permissions to bypass branch protection rules and merge the pull request immediately [1][2]. - viewerCanUpdate (Boolean!): Indicates whether the viewer has permission to update the pull request (e.g., editing the body or title) [1][2]. - viewerCanUpdateBranch (Boolean!): Indicates whether the viewer can update the head reference of the pull request (e.g., through a rebase or merge from the base branch) [1][2]. Repository Permissions To understand the viewer's general permission level on a repository, you can query the Repository object: - viewerPermission (RepositoryPermission): Returns the viewer's explicit permission level on the repository (e.g., READ, WRITE, ADMIN) [3]. This field will return null if the viewer is authenticated as a GitHub App [3]. - viewerCanAdminister (Boolean!): Indicates whether the viewer has admin-level permissions on the repository [3]. To perform a merge operation, you would typically use the mergePullRequest mutation [4][5]. Before attempting this, you can check the mergeability of a pull request using the mergeable field on the PullRequest object [6][7], which returns a state such as MERGEABLE, CONFLICTING, or UNKNOWN. site:docs.github.com GitHub pull request merge permissions write maintain admin author fork contributor

💡 Result:

In GitHub, the ability to merge pull requests is tied to specific repository permission levels [1][2]. Permission Requirements for Merging To merge a pull request, a user must have at least Write access to the repository [2][3][4]. Repository Roles and Merge Capabilities The following roles determine what a user can do regarding pull request merges: - Write: Users with Write access (and higher) can merge pull requests [1][2]. - Maintain: Users with Maintain access can merge pull requests and configure merge settings [1][2]. - Admin: Users with Admin access have full control, including the ability to merge pull requests on protected branches even if required status checks or approving reviews are missing [1][2]. - Read and Triage: Users with Read or Triage access cannot merge pull requests [1][2]. Pull Request Author and Fork Context - Pull Request Author: The person who creates a pull request does not automatically have permission to merge it into the base repository unless they have been granted at least Write access [1][2]. - Fork Contributions: When a contributor creates a pull request from a fork, they are not granted automatic merge permissions. However, the pull request author can enable an option called "Allow edits from maintainers" (or "Allow edits and access to secrets by maintainers"), which permits individuals with Write access or higher in the upstream repository to make changes directly to the pull request branch [5]. Summary of Key Terms - Write/Maintain/Admin: These are the repository roles that permit merging [1][2]. - Author: The individual proposing changes; they require repository-level merge permissions to complete the merge themselves [1][2]. - Contributor: A general term for someone interacting with the repository. A contributor only gains the ability to merge if assigned a role of Write, Maintain, or Admin [1][2]. - Fork: A personal copy of a repository. Merging happens in the upstream (original) repository, requiring specific permissions in that repository regardless of whether the change originated from a fork [5].

Silent truncation of checks and review threads can produce a wrong "ready" verdict.

reviewThreads and statusCheckRollup.contexts are capped at 100 nodes and no cursor is followed. A pull request with more than 100 checks or threads returns a partial page. The mobile resolvePullRequestState grades only the returned checks, so a failing required check or an unresolved thread beyond the first page produces the "ready" state and a merge action.

Request pageInfo { hasNextPage endCursor } for both connections. Either paginate, or return a truncation flag so the client can suppress a definitive "ready" headline.
