Tracks benchmarks over time in CI (#298), starting with one.

tests/test_benchmarks.py has one benchmark: a group-by mean over an
in-memory Dataset, using pytest-benchmark's benchmark fixture. A
new benchmarks job runs it on push to main and stores the result
on gh-pages with github-action-benchmark, commenting if a run looks
regressed.

Also adds pytest-codspeed to the benchmark extra and a codspeed
job that runs the same benchmark through CodSpeed's action. It's
workflow_dispatch-only for now: CodSpeed's action needs a project
connected via their GitHub App, which only an org admin can install.
Once that's done, push and pull_request can join its trigger --
unlike the pytest-benchmark job, CodSpeed doesn't need gh-pages
write access, so it can safely run on every PR, including from
forks.

One thing needed before (or at) merge: gh-pages doesn't exist on
this repo yet. The first benchmarks run on main will fail at the
push step until it's created once, as github-action-benchmark's own
docs describe.

Opening as a draft to get the shape right before adding more
benchmarks or wiring up CodSpeed for real.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Benchmark checks now run separately from the standard unit-test suite.
    • Added a benchmark for a grouped mean query over a representative dataset.
  • Chores
    • Added automated benchmark runs and result reporting, with performance alerts that do not fail the job.

d33bs added 2 commits November 3, 2026 16:43
Starts with one benchmark, a group-by mean over an in-memory
Dataset, using pytest-benchmark's `benchmark` fixture. A new
benchmarks job in ci.yml runs it on push to main and stores the
result on gh-pages with github-action-benchmark, flagging a
regression with a commit comment.

pytest-codspeed provides a fixture of the same name, so this
benchmark can run unmodified under it later without any changes
to the test itself.

Issue xqlsystems#298.
Adds pytest-codspeed to the benchmark extra; it recognizes
pytest-benchmark's benchmark fixture, so tests/test_benchmarks.py
needs no changes to run under either. Verified locally: a
--codspeed run disables pytest-benchmark's own instrumentation for
that run rather than double-measuring.

The new codspeed job runs the same benchmark through CodSpeed's
action, in simulation mode. It's workflow_dispatch-only: CodSpeed's
action authenticates against a project for this repo that doesn't
exist until an org admin installs CodSpeed's GitHub App and
connects it, so push or pull_request would just fail today. Once
connected, push and pull_request can join the trigger -- unlike the
pytest-benchmark job, CodSpeed doesn't need gh-pages write access,
so it can safely run on every PR, including from forks.

Issue xqlsystems#298.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a benchmark for a SQL group-by query and configures CI to run benchmarks with pytest-benchmark and CodSpeed. The standard unit-test command excludes benchmark tests.

Changes: Benchmark tracking and execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Benchmark definition and dependencies
pyproject.toml, tests/test_benchmarks.py
Adds benchmark dependencies and a marked benchmark using a deterministic in-memory dataset. The test checks the latitude and longitude sizes of the grouped query result.
CI benchmark execution and publishing
.github/workflows/ci.yml
Excludes benchmark tests from the unit-test command. Adds a pytest-benchmark job that publishes results to gh-pages, and a manually dispatched CodSpeed simulation job.

Compare the benchmark result values, not only the dimension sizes.

The assertions check only lat and lon sizes. A query that returns wrong AVG(temperature) values with the same shape still passes. Add a comparison against the expected means:

     assert result.sizes["lon"] == grid.sizes["lon"]

Add id: rust-toolchain to the toolchain steps that the new cache keys read.

The benchmarks and codspeed cache keys read steps.rust-toolchain.outputs.cachekey, but no step in ci.yml sets that id. GitHub evaluates the missing output as an empty string, so the key omits the toolchain component. Add id: rust-toolchain to each dtolnay/rust-toolchain@stable step that a cache key reads.

Remove the issue #298 references from the new benchmark docstring and CI comment.

The module docstring in tests/test_benchmarks.py and the comment above the benchmarks CI job cite issue #298. The repository convention forbids issue or PR numbers in docstrings and code comments, and neither reference is a workaround TODO. Drop the number from both. Keep the explanation in the text itself.

Remove dims= from the benchmark's to_dataset() call.

Inference already resolves lat and lon for the registered grid Dataset, so the explicit argument is not needed. The benchmark then uses the default inferred path. Output is the same either way. Repository guidance in AGENTS.md says not to pass dims= when inference resolves them.
