Nothing changes for users. The nightly simulation soak, einfold's randomized test against plain DataFusion (the Rust SQL engine einfold extends), stops reporting three kinds of DataFusion behavior as einfold's failures. The workflow can now run long soaks.

The first long soak of main (run 40928110731, filed as #112) reported 99 failures across about 275,000 cases. I shrank and replayed them, and all are DataFusion's:

Decisions to review

  • Where only one of the host and einfold fails, a control becomes the oracle (control). The control is the host run again on einfold's partitions, batch size and settings, and every later check uses it. Einfold must succeed where the control does and match its rows and schema. Where it fails, it must fail with the same kind of error, compared without the values the message quotes (error_kind). An einfold panic always fails the case unless the host panicked the same way. Running out of memory is still tallied rather than failed. The alternative was to stop drawing text that doesn't read as a number, but that would also stop testing einfold's own errors.
  • Known::DictionaryFloatZeros skips [partition] only where the mask compares a dictionary-encoded float column. Masks over integer keys keep the check beside a dictionary-encoded join key.
  • The job's limit rises to 75 minutes, with soaks of at most 3,000 seconds (inputs with too many digits for the shell's arithmetic are rejected), and the build is cached even when a soak fails. Before, a job that found a failure never saved its cache, so every night with findings rebuilt from nothing.

Invariants the tests check

Every one of the 99 seeds passes with the skips and the control, and so do the 55 from the next nightly run (40951759780). With EINFOLD_SIM_KNOWN set, the cases gated by known bugs fail again. Two of the 96 [partition] cases pass anyway, since setting the variable also changes what the generator draws. 6,000 fresh cases from three seeds pass.

The first long soak of main (run 40928110731) reported 99 failures. All
are DataFusion's, and none is einfold's:

- 66 `[partition]` failures over dictionary-encoded float keys, which
  DataFusion compares by their bits (einfold#41);
- 30 `[partition]` failures where a mask's `<>` is over an `IS NOT
  DISTINCT FROM` join: DataFusion simplifies the negation `NOT (a <> b)`
  to `a = b`, which reaches the WHERE-equality bug (einfold#21);
- 3 `[error]` failures where DataFusion's own plan on einfold's number
of partitions casts text that doesn't read as a number.

The nightly job also timed out on a 35-minute soak, since a build with
no cache takes about 15 minutes, and never saved its cache when a soak
failed.

Walkthrough

The nightly workflow enforces soak input limits, increases the job timeout, and saves the Rust cache on failure. Simulation tests normalize spawned-task failures, run a host control for outcome mismatches, compare selected errors, and skip checks for documented known issues.

Comment thread .github/workflows/nightly-fuzz.yml Resolved
Where only one of the host and einfold fails, the host on einfold's
partitions now replaces the host for every later check, so its rows and
schema are compared too, and einfold must fail with the same kind of
error. A panic in einfold fails the case unless the host panicked the
same way. The dictionary skip now applies only where the mask compares a
dictionary-encoded float, and the workflow rejects inputs with too many
digits for the shell's arithmetic.

Tokio's text for a panicked task names the task's ID, so two runs of the

Preserve unmatched apostrophes in error messages.

error_kind discards everything after an unmatched apostrophe. For example, panicked: can't open file and panicked: can't read input both normalize to panicked: can. The simulation then accepts different host and einfold panics as matching. Normalize quoted row values without discarding unmatched apostrophes.

Based on learnings, compare failure causes and ignore quoted row-dependent values.

Update the normalization used by error_kind so unmatched apostrophes remain part
of the error message instead of truncating it, while still ignoring quoted

Keep the one-sided memory tally when both runs fail.

If the original host succeeds, einfold runs out of memory, and the control fails with a cast error, this guard falls through to the generic two-error branch. That branch leaves out.memory as Neither, so the einfold memory exhaustion is not tallied. Record the side that exhausted memory before returning.

Based on learnings, preserve the out-of-memory exception when either error indicates memory exhaustion.

Use the selected host session for the partition oracle.

When controlled is true, theirs uses the control result, but the partition check still runs with("TRUE") on host. A generated masked fold can enter this block, and plan-dependent casts can make the host's unmasked query fail while the control and all three ours queries succeed. The tuple match then skips the partition comparison. Keep or recreate the control session and use it for all.

In the partition-oracle check, run the unmasked `with("TRUE")` query using the

Nothing changes for users. Fixes #66, which never reached main, and adds
a test that would catch it if it did.

#66 reported a planning failure: `Cannot swap HashJoinExec inputs after
dynamic filters have been constructed`. DataFusion's physical optimizer
(the rules, such as `JoinSelection`, that rewrite a physical plan) was
optimizing a fold's fallback twice, where the fallback is the host's own
plan, run where einfold's kernels decline. The fallback was optimized
once when it was planned, and again as a child of `EinFoldExec`. That
child was a commit (a49e236) in the stack before it was squash-merged.
On main, `EinFoldExec`'s children have only ever been its operands, and
since #87 the fallback is a logical plan, planned only when it runs. So
the optimizer can't reach it twice.

## Decisions to review

- **A test of the cause, not of #66's query**
([`the_optimizer_sees_a_fallback_once`](crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/detect_vs_host.rs)).
A physical optimizer rule, `Leaves`, runs first in the session and keeps
every leaf of every plan it's given. It fails if it's ever given one
again. Recreating #66 by making the fallback a child, on the commit
before #87, fails it with "the physical optimizer was given a plan it
had optimized". It passes on main. The alternative was #66's own query,
but that passes even on a49e236: whether `JoinSelection` swaps depends
on the tables' partitions and statistics, which the soak varied and the
issue's SQL doesn't.
- **The simulation's skip for #66 goes**
(`Known::FallbackOptimizedTwice` in
[`simulation.rs`](crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/simulation.rs)). It
hid any error with #66's message, so the simulation now reports one as a
failure. A 5-minute soak without it ran 10,399 cases with no planning
errors. Its 4 failures are #112's first four seeds, DataFusion bugs that
#113 steps around.

🪤 Claude (fuzz adversary)

Nothing changes for users. The simulation's `[threads]` check stops
reporting runs where einfold handed a fold to DataFusion's own plan
because memory ran short.

A clean 30-minute soak of main after #113 ([run
41005507728](https://github.com/xqlsystems/einfold/actions/runs/41005507728),
filed as #123) ran about 500,000 cases and reported 5 `[threads]`
failures, each a difference in a sum's last bit. All five had a small
memory pool. In each, the first run of einfold computed every fold
itself. The second run, on another number of partitions, ran short of
memory, and `EinFoldExec`, einfold's execution operator, handed its fold
to the host's plan (`host_plans=1` in its metrics), as it is designed
to. DataFusion's float sums depend on the partitions, so the bits
differ, but neither run's difference is einfold's.

## Decisions to review

- **`[threads]` now compares only where the second run also has no host
plan, or the values are exact**
([`run_case`](crates/einfold-datafusion/tests/simulation.rs)). Exact
values' sums are the same in any order, so they keep the check wherever
the sums were done. The alternative was to run the second session
without a memory pool. That would also stop checking that einfold's own
kernels give the same bits under memory pressure when they don't run
short.
- **A question for the maintainer, not decided here.** The design says
einfold is "deterministic where einfold runs", and these runs weren't
einfold's. Still, with the memory fallback, a query's bits now depend on
how much memory was free when it ran, which can vary between two runs on
the same thread count. Is that the intended reading of the principle, or
should the fallback be reported, say in `EXPLAIN ANALYZE` or a log line,
so users know a run's bits weren't einfold's?

## Invariants the tests check

All five seeds from the run pass. Locally, they failed on main and
passed with the change, and in each the second run's plan showed
`host_plans=1`. 5,000 fresh cases starting at the failing seeds' regions
pass.
