This PR uses the shrinker from #103 in the simulation from #65, in the bounded simulation test and in the nightly soak. It is stacked on #65, which is now stacked on #103.

What a failing case shrinks by. These are the candidates, biggest first:

  1. each setting back to its default, one at a time: no memory pool, hash joins, dynamic filters, repartitioning;
  2. one partition and the default batch size, for each of the host's, einfold's and the third session's;
  3. each table in one batch;
  4. without ranges of a table's rows: all of them, each half, each quarter, down to each row;
  5. ranges of a table's values set to one.

A candidate is kept when it still fails the same property, the same bracketed tag such as [rows], and shrinking starts again from it. The twin tables that inexact cases are bounded with are rebuilt after each change. The query stays as it is: SQL has no simplification that's safe in general, and the tables are where the size is.

Repartitioning comes back only where the simulation draws it. With a memory pool on, it stays off, since a pool plus repartitioning can hang a plan (#71).

Reports give the original failure's first line, then the shrunk case in full: its SQL, settings, tables and einfold's plan. The seed still replays the original case, and shrinking it again gives the same result unless DataFusion's own timing differs. A shrunk case is also short enough for the nightly issue's 60-line blocks. In the soak, the watchdog times each try separately. If a try hangs, the soak reports the failure unshrunk, rather than losing it to a [stall].

Tables record their batches as ranges of their rows (Slice), so rows can be removed while each batch keeps the rest of its own, empty batches included. Building a table from its slices gives the same partitions as before, so every seed draws the same case. The seeded generator moves to einfold-testkit unchanged, for the same reason.

What it found on its first run. A [partition] failure, 23 rows against 22, shrank in 37 tries to one row per table:

[partition] einfold gave 2 rows, the host 1
  only einfold's: ["NULL|NULL|3ff0000000000000"]
  settings=Settings { sort_merge: false, no_repartition: false, no_dynamic_filters: false, pool: None }
  SQL: SELECT l.a AS g0, r.b AS g1, SUM(r.v * l.v) AS v FROM r r JOIN l l ON (l.b IS NOT DISTINCT FROM r.a) WHERE (l.a = r.b) GROUP BY l.a, r.b
l: a NULL, b 2, v 1.0
r: a 2, b NULL, v 1.0

The plan that ran is plain DataFusion. Its EliminateCrossJoin makes WHERE l.a = r.b a second key of the IS NOT DISTINCT FROM join, and applies that join's NULL equality to both keys, so NULL = NULL matches. It is another spelling of #21. On #65 (00aafec), a test now pins it, and [partition] steps around it as a known bug.

Checks. The bounded test passes at 150 and 400 cases. A soak over the failing seed with known bugs re-enabled shrinks before logging, and the nightly report's block extraction picks up the shrunk block.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Simulation and kernel tests now reduce failing scenarios to smaller cases while preserving the original failure type, making test reports easier to investigate.
    • Shrinking limits can be configured by attempt count and elapsed time; reports include the smallest case found and whether the limit was reached.
    • Randomized test cases use seeded randomness for repeatable runs, and long-running simulations distinguish a stalled test from a stalled reduction attempt.

Possibly related PRs

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c92e3

The new simulation tests can report false row-mismatch failures when known-bug mode is on, and shrinking can leave failing cases larger than necessary because candidates change the partition count. Both are small test fixes and do not affect production behavior, so the change is mergeable with these follow-ups.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c92e3

The new automation confines issue-write access to a separate reporting job. Manual inputs are validated, and failure logs become report text rather than executable commands. No exploitable security regression was established in the reviewed paths. Repository access settings were unavailable, so the assessment remains qualified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed privileged path primarily exposes repository issue integrity and CI execution. Its intended mutations are label creation, issue creation and issue comments; the workflow does not grant content-write or deployment authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Manual duration and seed inputs enter shell code through environment variables and pass digit-only validation before arithmetic. This workflow declares no pull-request trigger.
  • observed — Log-derived reproduction commands and failure content are emitted into issue-body text, not evaluated as shell code. Publication uses fixed GitHub CLI operations with quoted arguments.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Issue deduplication is best-effort, not exactly-once. The script records a run marker but does not check it before posting, and treats issue-list errors as an empty result. Workflow serialization reduces concurrent creation races, but reruns or lookup failures can still produce duplicate publication.

This adds a simulation test of einfold in DataFusion, a soak mode that
runs it on fresh seeds for a time budget, and a nightly workflow that
runs the soak and files an issue when a property fails. It's modeled on
the soaks of ddx, the XQL Systems project for automatic differentiation
of SQL queries, and shares their log format and their triage script, so
a failure in either project is reported the same way.

`detect_vs_host.rs` checks that detection fires on the shapes it should,
over a handful of spellings each. `simulation.rs` generates the
spellings instead: joins written with `ON` or as comma joins, sides
swapped, operands behind subqueries and CTEs, filters and `HAVING`,
factors that are expressions, keys of eight types (integers of several
widths, unsigned keys past `BIGINT`, text, dictionary text, and floats
with `-0.0`, NaNs of both signs and two payloads), NULL slots holding
garbage values, empty batches, domains with duplicate keys, the
regroup's `CASE` testing columns other than the keys, two folds under
`UNION ALL`, a fold of a fold's result, and `ORDER BY … LIMIT` above.
Each case runs on plain DataFusion and on DataFusion with einfold, with
different partition counts and batch sizes. It also varies the session's
settings, the same for both: sort-merge rather than hash joins, no
repartitioning, no dynamic filters, and small memory pools (8 KB, 32 KB,
256 KB) that DataFusion's operators can spill from. A sixth shape is a
masked fold: a `WHERE` comparing two of a fold's outputs, or a
look-alike comparing an output with a summed column, half of them under
a domain.

The invariants it checks, each tagged in failure reports:

- `[error]`: einfold answers wherever DataFusion does. `[masks-error]`:
and fails wherever DataFusion fails.
- `[schema]`: the same columns, names, types, nullability and metadata,
both planned and in the batches.
- `[rows]`: the same rows as a multiset, bit for bit with exact values.
With ill-conditioned values, within the summation bound `2·(n −
1)·u·Σ|terms|`, where DataFusion computes `n` and `Σ|terms|` by running
the same query over twin tables holding 1.0 and `|v|`.
- `[host-settings]`: DataFusion gives the same exact answer under the
case's settings as under the defaults. Where it doesn't, the bug is
DataFusion's, and einfold can't match both.
- `[rerun]`: the physical plan, reset with `reset_plan_states` and run
again, gives the same rows. DataFusion's own plan, rerun, is the
control. Reruns use sessions of their own without dynamic filters, which
`reset_plan_states` doesn't support.
- `[threads]`: where einfold computed every sum itself, the same bits on
another partition count and batch size.
- `[partition]`: a mask comparing two of a fold's outputs decides each
group whole. So the groups of the mask, of its negation and of its `IS
NULL` case are, between them, exactly the unmasked fold's, with the same
values. An exact check that needs no oracle.
- `[hash]`: every fold detection finds, run through einfold's own
kernels (`DetectFolds::without_fallback`), also matches.
- `[stall]` (soak only): no case runs longer than two minutes. A
watchdog reports a hang as a failure of its seed.

Under a small pool, either side may run out of memory where the other
doesn't. Those cases are tallied rather than failed. Coverage is
asserted on long runs: each shape fires, and the dense algorithm, the
hash algorithm and the host's plan each run.

Findings, each filed with a minimal reproduction:

- #60 (#52): a fold joined back to a domain with duplicate keys gave
wrong answers on the host-plan fallback. Fixed on main.
- #61 (#48): factors were evaluated below the join, so einfold failed
queries DataFusion answers. Fixed on main.
- #62 (#48): the fallback wasn't a child of `EinFoldExec`, so a fold in
`WITH RECURSIVE` panicked, and a reset plan reran wrongly. Fixed on
main.
- #66 (#48, from #62's fix): with the fallback now a child, DataFusion's
physical optimizer runs over it twice, and some folds fail to plan.
- #63 (upstream, already apache/datafusion#26618): DataFusion's TopK
gives timing-dependent answers over `-0.0` and `0.0`.
- #67 (upstream): DataFusion's sort-merge join on a float key and
another key drops a match when a side holds both `-0.0` and `0.0`.
- apache/datafusion#24414, fixed after 55.2: a sort-merge join's filter
reads stale columns once a projection is pushed into it.
- #71 (upstream): DataFusion's plans can hang under a small memory pool
when they repartition.
- #21, a new spelling: an `=` in `WHERE` over an `IS NOT DISTINCT FROM`
join matches NULL to NULL. The shrinker in #104 cut it down to one row
per table.
- #88 (#78, on M2's stack): a masked fold left-joined from a domain
ignores its mask.

The upstream ones are pinned in `datafusion_behaviors.rs`, and each pin
fails once DataFusion fixes its bug. The simulation steps around each
open bug (`Known` in `simulation.rs`), so the soak keeps finding new
ones. `EINFOLD_SIM_KNOWN=1` brings them back, to check a fix. It passes
150 cases in a release build (60 in CI's debug build).

An ignored `export` test writes generated cases to files, so another
host can run them. The Python package's differential runs (#75) used it.

#104 adds shrinking on top, through #103's test kit. The nightly
workflow runs three ten-minute regions on disjoint seeds, and keeps at
most one open `fuzz-finding` issue: a recurrence comments on it rather
than opening another. Reproduce any reported failure with
`EINFOLD_SEED=<seed> cargo test -p einfold-datafusion --test simulation
-- --nocapture simulation`, which prints the case's SQL and tables.

A failing case is now shrunk before it's reported, in the bounded test
and in the soak: its settings go back to their defaults, it runs on one
partition at the default batch size, each table goes into one batch, and
ranges of its rows are removed and its values set to one, keeping each
change after which it still fails the same property. The report gives the
original failure's first line, then the smallest case in full, which keeps
nightly issues short. In a soak, the watchdog times each try, and reports
the failure unshrunk if one hangs.

Tables record their batches as ranges of their rows, so that rows can be
removed while each batch keeps the rest of its own. The seeded generator
moves to einfold-testkit, unchanged.

Enable LIMIT only for Values::Exact, independently of the known-bug gate.

limit checks only !avoids(Known::TopKSignedZeros). With EINFOLD_SIM_KNOWN set, inexact cases can therefore get ORDER BY 1, 2, 3 LIMIT 5. For every shape that queries::query limits (FromDomain, JoinedBack, Union, Nested), column 3 is the aggregate v. Rows can share keys through domain duplicates and UNION ALL. When they do, an allowed inexact difference in v changes which rows LIMIT keeps. within_bound then reports a false [rows] failure. The twin tables run the same limited SQL over different values, so they can also select different rows.

This breaks the workflow that EINFOLD_SIM_KNOWN=1 exists for: checking whether a fix holds.

Keep the table's partition count when shrinking candidates rebuild the table.

table() resizes partitions to parts so that partitions with no slice "still count" (Line 435). Table::sliced recomputes the partition count from the largest slice.partition + 1. Table::without and Table::with_ones both call Table::sliced. Each removal candidate and each ones-candidate therefore drops the trailing empty partitions without notice.

The result is that each candidate changes two things at once: its rows or values, and the MemTable partition count. The partition count changes the host's and einfold's input partitioning. If a failure depends on that count, every removal candidate and ones-candidate fails differently or passes. The shrinker then rejects them, and the reported case stays larger than necessary.

Pass the partition count through Table::sliced, or resize after Table::sliced in without and with_ones.
