What: One interrupt_thread action can retire a thread and its descendants, and the Agents panel shows acknowledged stops accurately.
Why: Interrupting one turn left descendants running and allowed late reports or usage-limit resumes to wake stopped parents.
So what: Isolated live proof and independent exact-head review passed; the coordinator owns installed desktop acceptance and merge.

Closes #122. Parent specification: #113. Rebased after #114 (PR #126) onto 6f56eb907a9743e5ca31f978b8d0042b9b9d73a3, then rebased onto PR #125 at c66f6b3366d98a9a43a37c2f838fc0b0471a2b4f.

interrupt_thread({threadId, retireSubtree:true}) installs durable retirement guards in the serialized engine, stops descendants across project boundaries, and waits for provider stop acknowledgments. Queued starts, late report/spawn/message races, startup continuation and autonomous usage-limit resumes honor retirement. Explicit manual recovery resumes only the named thread. The default single-thread interrupt behavior remains compatible. New fork-owned helpers keep toolkit handler changes small; no generic shutdown machinery or database migration is introduced.

Proof

Durable sanitized result and bindings: #129 (comment). Final live observations are separate from pass/fail assertions.

  • Server: pnpm exec vp test run apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/threads/{retireSubtree,interruptThread,childThreads,childUsageLimitResume,usageLimitResume,spawnIntoProject}.test.ts apps/server/src/orchestration/Layers/{OrchestrationEngine,ProviderCommandReactor}.test.ts apps/server/src/serverRuntimeStartup.reconcile.test.ts passed 182/182 across 9 files at final candidate b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb. Includes mixed-project three-level subtree retirement, independent top-level preservation, physical-stop receipts/drains, queued starts and restart recovery.
  • Server scoped pnpm exec tsc --noEmit -p apps/server/tsconfig.json, pnpm exec vp lint on touched server TypeScript files, node scripts/fork-features.mjs check and diffcheck passed. Exact file list and output bindings: /tmp/122-stop-subtree/final-rebase-proof/binding.json.
  • UI: pnpm exec vp test run apps/web/src/components/AgentThreadTree.logic.test.ts passed 8/8; pnpm exec vp lint apps/web/src/components/AgentThreadTree.logic.ts apps/web/src/components/AgentThreadTree.logic.test.ts, cd apps/web && pnpm exec tsc --noEmit and diffcheck passed at original UI candidate 48bd7ab195facf50c133fb1b880dd4589d640321; both UI file hashes remain unchanged on the final rebased candidate. The regression failed before the fix: expected interrupted, received running.
  • Original production-seam reproduction of the queued-start regression failed before the server fix; this restored selected original modules, not an entire baseline checkout.
  • Live command: EXPECT_HEAD=b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb node /tmp/122-stop-subtree/live/driver.ts passed (exit 0) against an isolated server/home on port 41722. D → W → X crossed projects A → B → A; all three tool PIDs exited, independent top-level U remained running and completed, late reports stayed blocked across restart, and manual W recovery left D retired. Result: /tmp/122-stop-subtree/live/run-2026-10-01T20-24-36-242Z/result.json. The candidate remained clean and unchanged. Shell stop notifications preceded observed gate closure for D/W/X; this live observation proves eventual physical stop, while deferred-provider tests verify waiting for adapter stop completion. The real Claude adapter schedules termination and does not await tool-child exit. It does not independently map provider CLI PIDs. No live user state, sleeps, browser or installed build is used.

Decisions and limits

Retirement also blocks autonomous usage-limit resume. Durability, manual recovery and race assessment are coordinator engineering guidance inferred from the Issue outcome. Reversible assumptions: opt-in API preserves existing interrupt semantics; explicit recovery is per named thread; automatic command identities use the existing server-owned convention; live proof uses synthetic projects because no authorized seed was available.

Installed desktop rendering/screenshots and installed-build acceptance remain with the coordinator per the common brief. No browser permission was granted. Actual usage-limit exhaustion is covered by focused server tests rather than induced live. No versioning by design. No merge or install is authorized. Website/SEO impact: none, this changes existing agent lifecycle behavior and no public website content or URLs.

Elon record

Requirements and who asked: Issue #122 requests one-action subtree stop, blocked reportback revival and honest Agents state; the coordinator requested mixed-project/top-level proof and restart/manual/race assessment.
Deleted: Generic shutdown changes, new UI controls, schema migrations and unrelated cleanup.
Bottleneck: Exact-candidate live verification and independent review before coordinator acceptance.
Checked myself: Inspected serialized retirement, provider stop acknowledgment, startup guards, report suppression and mixed-project source paths; read actual 182-test and 8-test output and confirmed the UI-only final diff.

Implementation: Prism-selected Codex GPT-6.1-Sol for server; explicitly selected Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code for UI. Coordination: GPT-6.1-Sol in Codex/T3 Code. Review uses an independent Prism-selected reviewer.

Agent Observer cost publish: #129 (comment). Its report has unbound/shared-session usage and zero attributed responses; the displayed $0 is not proof of zero task cost.

GitHub CI at handoff: Check and Test/server shards pending; Native fingerprint diff cancelled. These are not claimed complete. The PR is conflict-free; no new bot findings have been posted.

What: Sanitized exact-candidate live results and focused proof bindings are retained below.
Why: Local /tmp paths are scratch and cannot serve as durable PR evidence.
So what: The independent reviewer can assess these records; installed desktop acceptance remains with the coordinator.

The original live row's pass:true was misleading: stoppedWhileToolRunning contains D/X/W. The normalized row below is an observation only, not a passed negative assertion. The live run proves eventual tool PID exit and settled state, not exact physical-process ordering or separate Claude CLI PID exit. Raw server logs and auth/pairing material are excluded. Server logs are available locally only; stdout evidence was inspected. The server binding's HEAD is the parent commit; every bound backend file hash still matches the final UI-only head.

fix(server): retire stopped thread subtrees durably

fix(web): stopped child threads show as stopped in the Agents panel
5630a7d 
A retired thread's session is interrupted but its last turn can stay
running or error, so the panel showed it as running or failed. A live or
interrupted session now outranks the last turn; a restarted session still
shows running.

What: Final rebased candidate passed the isolated live run and 182 focused server tests; unchanged UI proof passes 8/8.
Why: This replaces prior-head proof after main #125 integration and the unused-export CI fix.
So what: Independent review and GitHub checks remain; no merge or installation is performed.

Exact live command: EXPECT_HEAD=b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb node /tmp/122-stop-subtree/live/driver.ts, exit 0. Tool PID exits, mixed-project subtree retirement, unaffected top-level completion, late reports, server restart and named manual recovery passed. The separate observations array records shell stop notifications before observed gate closure for D/X/W; it is not an assertion and does not establish exact physical-process ordering. Adapter completion schedules termination rather than awaiting tool-child exit. Auth/pairing material and raw server logs excluded.

What: Independent review of PR #129 at b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb found no blocking code issues.
Why: Retiring a thread must stop its descendants and prevent report-back or automatic resume from reviving them.
So what: The coordinator can proceed with acceptance; installed desktop proof and merge remain with the coordinator.

Review

Reviewed the complete diff from base c66f6b3366d98a9a43a37c2f838fc0b0471a2b4f to head b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb, including subtree traversal across projects, queued-start/report/spawn races, usage-limit resumes, restart persistence, named-thread manual recovery, and Agents panel status. The #125 movement is compatible: effortOptionId was moved unchanged to roles.ts, imported and re-exported by handlers.ts; the fork metadata changes account for both tickets.

The bound candidate proof reports the focused server suite at 182/182, scoped server typecheck, touched-file lint, fork feature map and diff check all passing. The UI files are hash-identical to the previously tested candidate, whose focused test passed 8/8 with lint and web typecheck. The exact-head isolated live run passed at b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb: D → W → X across projects A → B → A stopped, independent top-level U completed, late reports remained blocked through restart, and explicit recovery resumed only W. Sanitized result and bindings.

Claude stop contract

The installed Claude SDK documents query.close() as terminating the underlying process, CLI subprocess, and MCP transports. ClaudeAdapter.stopSessionInternal calls it, then completes task/session cleanup; its synchronous void API does not wait for an observed OS process exit. The live run proves eventual tool PID exit but does not prove exact exit-before-ack ordering or independently map the Claude CLI PID. This is a disclosed proof limit, not a blocking mismatch with #122’s explicit acceptance criteria (one-action subtree stop, durable no-revival, and honest stopped visibility). No supported actionable code finding remains.

What: PR #129 is review-ready at b85c02381de097da2ae7ee3f536c89046ce655eb, with focused proof, exact-head live proof and independent review passed.
Why: Subtree retirement now blocks autonomous revival across project boundaries and restart while preserving explicit named-thread recovery.
So what: The coordinator owns installed desktop acceptance and merge; current CI is recorded below, and no merge is authorized or performed.

Final handoff

  • Proof: sanitized final result and bindings; 182/182 server tests, 8/8 unchanged UI tests, scoped checks, exact-head isolated live run. Independent verdict, newest review/independent: success by lukemaj.
  • Agent Observer: sync exited 0; publish --task toolboxmd/chromeria#122 --repo toolboxmd/chromeria --pr 129 exited 0 and updated the cost comment after the final push. Snapshot 811a05efaa5bde0316e42545266292e5bc8ae4d2a52e41a50ccb759e009f718d reports 40 sessions, 67 minutes wall time, zero attributed responses, 40 sessions with usage bound to no task, and shared/unplaced response exclusions. The displayed $0.00 is an attribution gap, not a reliable total task cost or subscription spend. No manual attribution or capture was performed.
  • Runtime cleanup: final-run servers captured at spawn as PIDs 28734 and 45140, and tool PIDs 37569, 36010, 36119, 36012, are absent in a fresh ps check. The driver completed its awaited stop/cleanup, aborted its subscription, closed gate connections/socket servers and removed its owned gate directory before writing the successful result and exiting 0. Port 3773 and live user state were not touched. No browser or installed build was launched.
  • Retained resources: clean worktree and branch remain for this open PR and coordinator acceptance; isolated scratch fixtures/logs remain outside the worktree under /tmp/122-stop-subtree/live/. Raw logs may contain isolated auth/pairing material and were not uploaded. Durable sanitized proof is already on this PR.
  • Limits: Claude adapter completion schedules termination rather than awaiting OS tool-child exit; live proves eventual tool PID exit, not exact exit-before-ack ordering. Installed desktop rendering/screenshots and acceptance remain with the coordinator. No versioning by design; no install or merge.

Merged by the coordinator as 6acb2cf (squash) at verified head b85c023: diff read, CI green on that head, review/independent success by lukemaj on that head. Coordinator note for the user: retirement lives in the orchestration engine's command path (about 120 lines in upstream OrchestrationEngine.ts and ProviderCommandReactor.ts, keyed on server command-ID prefixes). It is opt-in (interrupt_thread with retireSubtree: true) and passes every command through unchanged when no retirement exists; a smaller design may be worth revisiting if upstream rebases hurt. Worktree and branch retired; installed-build check follows.
