Preserve sole-tuple inference and runtime conversion parity - #7643
A sole generic tuple parameter could reject data whose closed elements need runtime conversion, or infer different types during generated discovery, reflection discovery and reflection invocation. Reconstruct tuple elements while retaining structural last-occurrence inference, isolating interface/base candidates, and validating their completed types and constraints. Preserve cross-family and nested singleton payload boundaries, including TestDataRow payloads. Reject interface candidates whose validated bindings disagree, so inference does not depend on interface enumeration order. Infer types from containing generic types and include their arguments in generated metadata; shared regressions cover generic and non-generic nested interfaces.
This extracts the sole-tuple deliverable from #7631. Whole-row optional/params tails and explicit-method-type wrapper lookup remain outside this change. Ordinary and spread-column inference controls retain their expected failures. Added static shared fixtures, focused regenerated snapshots, boundary helper tests, CI integration expectations and the inference rule table.
Validation (SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64):
Generated and reflection matrix: each 83 passes plus 5 intentional inference-failure controls (88 total; exit 2 expected), including value/reference ambiguous interface candidates, explicit generic types, and mismatched array-rank declarations.
Native AOT publish succeeded; published executable produced the same 83 passes and 5 expected failures.
Core generator suite: 352 passed, 1 skipped. Focused snapshot revalidated after source line updates.
Engine net10.0 build: zero warnings/errors. Engine integration suite left to CI per repository instructions.
Existing fixture compiler warnings are tracked in #7642; existing AOT fixture warnings were recorded on #7493. Analyzer/code-fixer warning cleanup remains #7410. No new trimming diagnostics from these fixtures.
Improved generic type inference for tests with a single tuple argument, including nested tuples, repeated type parameters, nullable values, and compatible base classes or interfaces.
Preserved tuple boundaries and payloads during data unwrapping and reconstruction.
Improved handling of runtime conversions for tuple elements, including cases where conversion cannot be determined during inference.
Kept ordinary parameter and spread-column inference behavior unchanged.
This change adds sole-tuple generic type inference to generated and reflection discovery. It preserves tuple payload boundaries during unwrapping and adds tests for inference, conversion, candidate matching, and nested tuple behavior.

Summary
Preserve tuple boundaries during unwrapping src/TUnit.Core/Helpers/TestDataRowUnwrapper.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Helpers/DataUnwrapper.cs, tests/TUnit.UnitTests/SoleTupleBoundaryTests.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7639/SoleTupleInferenceTests.cs
Unwrapping now tracks when a sole tuple parameter must retain its tuple payload. Tests cover nested singleton tuples, wrapped data, and tuple spreading when no expected parameter is supplied.
Runtime inference handles structural tuple bindings and generic base-class or interface candidates. Reflection invocation uses tuple-specific inference and reconstruction. Fixtures cover conversions, repeated bindings, candidates, constraints, and explicit type arguments.
Match reconstructed tuple elements in generated discovery src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/CodeGenerationHelpers.cs, src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/Generators/TestMetadataGenerator.cs, tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/SoleTupleInferenceTests.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7639/SoleTupleInferenceTests.cs, .claude/docs/project-structure.md
Generated inference retains strict whole-tuple matching and adds a separate reconstruction path for a sole tuple parameter. Generated type metadata includes type arguments from containing types. Documentation describes the inference and reconstruction behavior.

Explanation
The title "Preserve sole-tuple inference and runtime conversion parity" matches the main change. The PR aligns sole-tuple generic inference and runtime conversion across generated discovery, reflection discovery, and reflection invocation. The title is specific and concise. It does not cover every detail, such as the array-rank fix or the candidate isolation work, which is acceptable.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR implements the coding requirements of #7639. In src/TUnit.Engine/Services/SoleTupleInference.cs, a sole tuple parameter reconstructs its elements. Structural inference keeps last-occurrence bindings for direct, nullable, array, and matching generic elements. Closed tuple elements are not used for bindings, so runtime conversion handles them. Unmatched elements contribute no bindings and defer the cast to invocation (mode == Structural || IsAssignableFrom). Interface and base candidates run in isolated copies (TryMergeCandidate, copied candidateBindings). Candidates validate the completed constructed type through SubstituteCandidateParameters and IsAssignableFrom. Constraint violations (ArgumentException) reject only that candidate. Interface candidates that infer different binding sets return false, so enumeration order does not change the result. Array inference requires matching ranks. Cross-family Tuple/ValueTuple reconstruction is handled (TupleHelper.IsTupleType on both sides). The author reports generated and reflection matrices, Native AOT, and generator suite results. These results are not independently rerun here. Remaining uncertainty: the ambiguous interface-candidate tests in SoleTupleInferenceTests.cs do not assert a result. The rejection path is confirmed by code only.

Explanation
The changes stay within #7639 and its acceptance scope. Production changes cover sole-tuple inference (SoleTupleInference.cs, TestGenericTypeResolver.cs), tuple reconstruction (TestDataRowUnwrapper.cs, DataUnwrapper.cs), reflection parity (ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs), TestMetadataGenerator matching, and containing-type generic arguments in CodeGenerationHelpers.cs. The containing-type change supports the generated metadata needed for inference. Tests, snapshots, CI expectations, and the rule-table documentation support these objectives. The reviewed code does not add whole-row optional or params-tail inference or explicit-method-type wrapper lookup. Those sibling items are excluded by the PR description and the linked issue.

Review of #7643 (sole generic tuple parameter inference)
I read the generator, TestDataRowUnwrapper, DataUnwrapper and the reflection-collector changes in the diff. I did not build or run the tests. The PR description reports 72 passes plus 3 expected failures in both modes, and a Native AOT run with the same results.
What looks good
Both metadata modes are covered. The generator (MatchesOpenRowType) and reflection (TestGenericTypeResolver.TryInferTypeMapping with tupleElement) apply the same rules, which the repo requires.
Interface and base-type candidates are matched against a copy of the bindings and only merged on success. That stops a rejected candidate from leaking bindings.
The CI expectations and the rule table in project-structure.md document the intent.
Containing-type handling in ContainsTypeParameter and GenerateTypeInfo fixes a real gap for Outer<T>.Inner.
Concerns
MatchesOpenRowType is hard to reason about. It carries two boolean modes (reconstructTupleElements, overwriteBindings) with different semantics in each branch.
Examples: the final return reconstructTupleElements && overwriteBindings; returns true for an unmatched element, and the closed-type shortcut at line 119 depends on both flags.
A small enum InferenceMode { Strict, Structural, Candidate }, or two separate functions, would make each rule local and testable. The same split would also cut the duplicated base and interface candidate loops.
The nullable-element handling is duplicated. It appears once at the top of the function and again inside the tuple-element loop. The loop then calls MatchesOpenRowType(parameterElements[i], rowElements[i], …) with the original, un-stripped elements, so the stripped locals are only used on the ITypeParameterSymbol branch. If that is deliberate, a comment would help. If not, it is a bug waiting to happen.
Last-occurrence-wins and strict candidate matching coexist.overwriteBindings makes a later element silently replace an earlier binding, for example (T, T) given (int, string). The generator and reflection paths must agree on this. The shared fixtures should include that case explicitly if they do not already.
The wrapped-versus-unwrapped decision is spread over three places.TestDataRowUnwrapper.UnwrapArray(reconstructTuple), DataUnwrapper.GetTupleDataParameterType and the singleton-boundary check in the collector each decide whether a tuple payload is kept whole. Only the second one's out bool flag is scanned for trailing CancellationToken parameters. One helper that answers "is this a sole-tuple data parameter?" would be less drift-prone. The collector already uses GetSingleDataParameter for this.
Dropping ParameterType.IsValueType from the singleton-tuple check in the collector widens the behaviour to reference-typed parameters. I could not tell from the diff whether a test covers a reference-type sole parameter receiving a Tuple<Tuple<…>> singleton. Please confirm one does.
No blocking correctness bug found in what I read. The main ask is item 1: restructure the matcher before it grows another flag.
Review fix pushed as e399972; the containing-type inference thread is resolved.
Validation with SDK 10.0.403 on macOS arm64:
Generator suite: 351 passed, 1 skipped; reviewed and committed the sole-tuple snapshot update.
Generated, reflection, and published Native AOT tuple matrices: each 74 passed and the same 3 intentional inference-failure controls (77 total, expected exit 2). Both new containing-type tests pass in all three modes.
Rebased onto main (including #7641) and pushed e11b4df. Conflict resolution retains strict whole-tuple matching for optional/params tails alongside sole-tuple element reconstruction, and preserves open whole-tuple TestDataRow boundaries.
Nullable handling is deliberate: a direct nullable type parameter binds to the underlying value type; other nullable shapes recurse using the original symbols to preserve their constructed structure. RepeatedNullableTupleTests and OpenNullableElement / OpenNullableReferenceElement cover these paths.
RepeatedConvertibleTupleTests explicitly covers (T, T) with (int, long) and verifies that the later binding wins while the earlier value converts. RepeatedNestedGenericTupleTests and RepeatedNullableTupleTests cover nested and nullable variants. A nonconvertible earlier value is allowed to fail at invocation by the documented inference rule.
NestedSingletonBoundaryTests.ReferenceOuter(Tuple<Tuple<int>>) and WrappedNestedSingletonInferenceTests.ReferenceOuter<T>(Tuple<Tuple<T>>) cover reference-typed sole parameters and nested singleton reconstruction. Both pass in generated and reflection modes.
Validation on SDK 10.0.403:
Full core generator suite: 352 passed, 1 skipped; no snapshot differences.
Sole-tuple namespace, generated and reflection: each 74 passed, 3 intentional inference-failure controls (77 total, expected exit 2).
Native AOT publishing was not repeated for this rebase; engine integration tests left to CI per repository instructions. Previously documented warnings remain tracked in the issues named in the PR body.
Draft retained for fresh review of the rebased head.
I read TestGenericTypeResolver.cs and TestDataRowUnwrapper.cs in full. I did not read the generator changes, the DataUnwrapper / ReflectionTestDataCollector changes or the test code in depth, and I did not build or run anything. The 74-pass matrix and the AOT publish are the author's reported results, which I have not reproduced. Given the AGENTS.md rule that metadata collection must behave the same in the generator and the engine, those unread files still need a review before merge.
The behaviour looks well thought out, and the regression coverage is broad: both modes, nested/TestDataRow payloads, and the intentional-failure controls. My concerns are about structure.
1. TryInferTypeMapping is accumulating mode flags
It now takes tupleElement and overwriteBindings, and the tuple rules are spread through the method:
Two continue guards, at lines 689 and 693, overlap.
A nullable-unwrapping block sits in the middle of the loop.
The fall-through at line 798 is tupleElement && overwriteBindings || IsAssignableFrom. It silently accepts a mismatch and defers the failure to invocation.
The candidate-merge loop (copy the mapping, infer, then copy back) appears three times, for the base-type, interface and tuple paths.
Each flag changes the semantics of every recursive call, so it is hard to tell which combinations are reachable. The two flags are always passed together on the sole-tuple path.
I suggest moving the sole-tuple rules into a dedicated helper, for example SoleTupleInference.TryInfer(parameterTupleType, argumentTupleType, mapping). It would follow the generator's rule: walk the elements, unwrap nullables, last occurrence wins, and defer closed elements to invocation. The general method would keep its original strict, first-binding-wins semantics. That would:
remove the mode flags from a shared method;
make the engine counterpart of the generator's logic easy to compare side by side, which is the AGENTS.md parity requirement;
let the boundary tests target the helper directly.
A small TryMergeCandidate helper would also replace the three copies of the merge loop.
2. Lenient fall-through weakens the error path
In tuple mode, return tupleElement && overwriteBindings means an element that matches nothing structurally is accepted. A bad row will therefore fail later at invocation with a conversion error rather than a GenericTypeResolutionException that names the parameter. Consider checking that the unbound element is at least convertible, or recording the deferral explicitly, so the diagnostic stays useful.
3. Smaller points
InferTypeMapping(..., int[] genericParameterPositions, ...) doesn't use that parameter. It predates this PR, and the PR touches the signature anyway, so it can be removed.
SubstituteCandidateParameters duplicates the shape of SubstituteGenericParameters, including the array rank handling. Both could share one substituter that takes a binding lookup delegate.
The catch (ArgumentException) around MakeGenericType is a reasonable guard for constraint violations. Add a one-line test that pins it, if one doesn't exist already.
The PR description says optional/params tails are out of scope. Please add a code comment at the tuple branch noting that boundary so a later change doesn't quietly widen it.
Verdict
Functionally plausible and well tested. I'd like the tuple rules isolated (item 1) before this lands, because that logic must stay in lockstep with the generator and the current layout makes drift likely.
Implemented the reaffirmed Claude request to isolate sole-tuple inference in d4da7e8.
SoleTupleInference.TryInfer now owns reconstruction inference. Ordinary TryInferTypeMapping has no tuple policy flags and retains strict first-binding consistency. The helper uses named Structural/Candidate modes and one TryMergeCandidate for base/interface isolation and completed-type validation.
Removed the unused genericParameterPositions argument and combined the overlapping closed-element guards. The helper documents that optional/params tails stay on strict inference.
Conversion deferral is intentional: discovery cannot reject a row merely because its declared structural element is not assignable; the documented runtime conversion policy still applies. Structural mode explicitly names that policy; candidates remain strict. Tightening conversion checks here would change the inference rules rather than refactor them.
Existing TupleConstrainedCandidateTests.Value and .Reference exercise constraint-invalid candidate rejection and selection of a later valid candidate. Both pass in generated and reflection modes.
Kept constraint substitution and candidate substitution separate: constraint substitution preserves the original type when a binding is missing, while candidate substitution preserves partially substituted shapes for validation. Consolidation remains part of Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588; introducing a lookup delegate is unnecessary for this extraction.
Validation (SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64):
Sole-tuple namespace: generated and reflection each 74 passed, 3 intentional inference-failure controls (77 total; expected exit 2). Reviewed failure identities.
Whole-tuple namespace: generated and reflection each 48 passed, 11 intentional controls (59 total; expected exit 2). Reviewed failure identities.
InferredGenericParamsArrayTests in reflection mode: 9 passed.
I read the PR description, the existing review comments, and the new SoleTupleInference.cs in full. I did not read the other changed files (generator, TestGenericTypeResolver, DataUnwrapper, tests) and did not build or run any tests. The Codex review so far found nothing major.
The design is reasonable. Structural inference follows the generator's last-occurrence rule. Interface and base-type candidates are merged only through a copy of the bindings, so a failed candidate cannot leave partial bindings behind. Each candidate is checked by building the fully substituted type, which also covers invariant generic arguments. A constraint violation is caught as ArgumentException and the candidate is rejected.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Hard-to-follow TryInfer loop. The generic-argument loop has several continue conditions: closed elements are skipped for tuples and in Candidate mode; Nullable elements are unwrapped for tuples only; generic-parameter elements take a special path. Pulling the tuple case into a separate InferTupleElements method would remove the nested IsTupleType checks. The two modes would then be easier to reason about, and unit-testing the tuple logic would be simpler.
Duplicate Nullable handling.Nullable<T> is unwrapped at the top of TryInfer and again inline for tuple elements. The recursive call at the top should already cover the tuple-element case, so the inline copy may be redundant. If it is, it is worth removing.
Allocation in Candidate mode.TryMergeCandidate copies the dictionary for every interface or base candidate tried. This is discovery-time reflection and the dictionaries are small, so it is acceptable. The project guidelines ask for allocation measurement on hot paths, so a short benchmark note in the PR would help. Alternatively, copy lazily and only when a candidate differs.
Array rank check.type == element.MakeArrayType() tells a single-dimension array from a rank-1 multidimensional array. A comment, or checking type.GetArrayRank() == 1 together with type.IsSZArray, would make that intent clearer.
Mismatched generic arity. When paramGenericArgs.Length != argGenericArgs.Length, the code falls through to the base-class and interface search and then to the IsAssignableFrom fallback. That seems right, but a test for mismatched tuple arity (for example a 7-tuple against a nested TRest tuple) would confirm it.
Overall this is solid work with thorough tests: a source-generator snapshot, shared fixtures and boundary tests. I have no blocking concerns.
Current-head Claude and Codex verdicts are positive for d4da7e8; all inline threads are resolved.
Disposition of Claude’s nonblocking suggestions: tuple traversal extraction, array shape clarity, candidate-copy measurement, and a focused mismatched-arity/TRest regression are recorded on the existing inference-policy follow-up #7588. Candidate isolation retains the previous copying policy; this change makes no performance improvement claim. Nullable handling is deliberate: the top-level guard excludes nullable arguments, whereas tuple-element handling unwraps Nullable arguments before binding a direct generic parameter. Removing it as redundant would change repeated nullable inference, covered by RepeatedNullableTupleTests.
Promoting this reviewed head to ready. Promotion triggers fresh Claude review and CI; auto-merge must wait for that Claude run and its findings to be checked.
I read SoleTupleInference.cs in full. I did not run the tests or read the rest of the diff (generator, DataUnwrapper, TestDataRowUnwrapper, snapshots) in depth. The PR description reports 74 passes and 3 expected failures in each mode, plus an AOT publish.
What looks good
The Structural and Candidate modes make the "last occurrence wins" rule explicit. Interface and base candidates are tried on a copy of the bindings (TryMergeCandidate) and merged only on success, so a failed candidate cannot leave partial bindings behind.
Candidate results are validated by building the full constructed type and calling IsAssignableFrom. Catching ArgumentException for constraint violations means one bad candidate does not block the others.
The RequiresUnreferencedCode and UnconditionalSuppressMessage annotations are scoped narrowly and justified, which fits the AOT and trimming constraint.
The fixtures cover the cross-family and nested-payload boundaries, and the generated and reflection paths are tested against the same expectations.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
TryInfer is hard to follow. One method handles nullable unwrapping, tuple element conversion, open-generic recursion, base walking and interface walking, and its behaviour depends on mode. The check at lines 106-108 (mode == Candidate || IsTupleType(parameterType)) and the tuple-specific block at lines 111-127 are the hardest to read.
Splitting the tuple handling into a separate InferTupleElements method would make the two modes easier to follow.
Two distinct walkers, structural and candidate-validation, would be easier to reason about and to test than one method switching on a mode enum.
Duplicated base and interface candidate loops. The two loops at lines 150-168 are nearly identical. A small helper that enumerates matching candidates (base chain or interface list) and feeds them to TryMergeCandidate would remove the duplication.
Allocation in discovery paths.TryMergeCandidate copies the dictionary for every interface or base candidate, and SubstituteCandidateParameters allocates arrays. This runs only in reflection discovery, and only for generic sole-tuple tests, so it is probably acceptable. The repo guidance asks for measurement on hot paths, so a short note or benchmark in the PR would help.
Permissive fallback at line 173. In Structural mode an element with no structural match returns true, and any type mismatch is deferred to invocation. This is deliberate and commented. A failure there will surface later with a cast error and no indication of which generic parameter was left unbound. A clearer error when a generic parameter stays unbound at invocation would help users, if one is not already there.
Unit tests for the inference rules.SoleTupleBoundaryTests covers the boundary helpers. Direct tests of SoleTupleInference.TryInfer would pin the rule table down without a full engine run. Useful cases are a nullable element, a multi-dimensional array, a constraint-violating interface candidate, and a derived open-generic base.
None of these is a correctness problem I could confirm. This is a clean extraction of the sole-tuple work from #7631, and I'd approve once CI, including the engine integration tests, passes.

Handled the new correctness feedback in db49fa5 while CI was running. The earlier blocker, Claude run 42031407001, completed successfully.
Both inference paths now examine every validated interface candidate against the original bindings. They merge only when all valid candidates agree; conflicting bindings fail inference before anything is merged. Existing bound-T and constraint-rejection controls remain passing.
Added shared value/reference tuple ambiguity controls for (IEnumerable<T>, int) with DualEnumerable, plus CI harness expectations. Both produce GenericTypeResolutionException; their empty bodies would pass if inference incorrectly selected a candidate.
Corrected the runtime rule table to identify SoleTupleInference.TryInfer and both callers. Repository searches found no other stale tuple-loop references; CodeRabbit's retrieved learnings are maintained by the reviewer.
Validation (SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64): generated and reflection matrices each have 74 passes and exactly 5 intentional inference failures (79 total; exit 2 expected). The full core generator suite passes: 352 passed, 1 skipped. Reviewed the snapshot: two new failure registrations and source-line shifts only. Native AOT: publish succeeded, and the published executable produced the same 74 passes and 5 intentional failures (79 total; expected exit 2); no diagnostics naming the changed helper. git diff --check passes. Engine integration tests remain for CI as instructed. Existing warning tracking: #7410, #7412, #7493; fixture compiler warning fixes are already on main via #7645.
Disposition of the latest nonblocking Claude suggestions: traversal extraction and direct helper-test improvements remain covered by the existing inference-policy follow-up #7588. Base and interface traversal now intentionally differ: only interfaces can supply multiple competing constructed candidates. Candidate-copy allocation remains the existing isolation mechanism; scanning every valid candidate is required to reject ambiguity, and this is no performance improvement claim. Unbound generic arguments already fail with GenericTypeResolutionException in the exercised controls; runtime conversion deferral remains intentional. CodeRabbit's bulk docstring-coverage warning is advisory and imposes no repository CI requirement; existing focused policy comments and the corrected rule table document this change without expanding it into unrelated documentation work.
Fresh review and CI are required for this head; auto-merge is not armed.
I read SoleTupleInference.cs in full. I did not read the full diff, the generator changes or the tests, and I did not build or run anything. The approach looks sound: structural mode keeps last-occurrence inference, interface candidates are isolated and checked against their completed types, and the order-dependence of interface enumeration is handled. The shared fixtures and the AOT validation in the description give good confidence.
Concerns
Partial binding mutation on failure. In Structural mode TryInfer writes into the caller's typeMapping while walking tuple elements. If a later element fails, earlier bindings remain. Candidate paths copy the dictionary first, but the structural path does not. This is harmless if every caller discards the dictionary on false. Please confirm that, or copy at the top-level entry, so it cannot become an ordering bug later.
Exception handling in SubstituteCandidateParameters. Only ArgumentException is caught around MakeGenericType. Inferred arguments such as byref-like types or pointers can throw NotSupportedException or TypeLoadException. If they cannot reach this path, a short comment saying so would help. Otherwise widen the catch for this candidate-rejection case.
Maintainability. TryInfer is now a single ~150-line method mixing nullable unwrapping, tuple family crossing, base-class candidates and interface candidates, controlled by a mode enum that changes the meaning of the generic-parameter branch. I'd suggest splitting it into InferStructural and InferCandidate with small shared helpers for nullable and array handling. Each mode's rules would then be readable and testable on their own, and easier to keep in sync with the source generator.
Generator parity. AGENTS.md requires identical behaviour in the generator and the engine. Interface ambiguity (value versus reference candidates) is the most fragile area, since Roslyn and reflection enumerate interfaces differently. Please keep those cases in the shared fixtures, and add one with three or more candidates if there isn't one.
Allocation. Each interface candidate allocates a new dictionary. This is discovery-time only, so it is probably fine, but the agreedBindings comparison could be skipped when only one candidate matches, which is the common case.
No blocking issues from what I read. The suggestions are mostly hardening and readability. Thanks for the thorough validation notes.

Fixed the declared-row reflection gap in b1f09de. With [GenerateGenericTest], sole tuple parameters now use SoleTupleInference.TryInfer before converting method bindings into the instantiation arguments. Optional/params tails retain strict whole-tuple mapping. Shared regressions and CI count expectations cover both cross-family directions, repeated T, CancellationToken exclusion and explicit/inferred deduplication (7 passes).
Validation (SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64):
Generated and reflection sole-tuple matrices: each 81 passes and the same 5 intentional inference failures (86 total, expected exit 2).
Full core generator suite: 352 passed, 1 skipped; reviewed snapshot adds only the four new fixture methods and seven closed invocations.
Whole-tuple matrices: generated and reflection each 48 passes and 11 intentional failure controls (59 total, expected exit 2).
git diff --check passed. Engine integration tests remain for CI, as instructed.
Disposition of Claude's latest nonblocking review:
Both runtime callers throw on false, aborting the row; the new declared-row caller discards its local bindings on false. Documented this contract on the helper.
Documented that tuple/data-source generic arguments cannot contain pointer, byref or byref-like types, and candidates are loaded runtime types rather than TypeBuilder. Constraint-invalid constructions remain rejected with ArgumentException.
Shared value/reference ambiguity controls remain in the matrix; a three-candidate extension is an optional follow-up, not required for this parity fix.
The dictionary comparison already executes only after an earlier valid candidate exists, so a sole valid candidate skips it.
The earlier wait on run 42031407001 no longer holds: it succeeded. The fix is pushed; fresh head reviews and CI must complete before merge.
I read the new SoleTupleInference.cs and the diff summary. I did not run the tests. The PR is well reasoned, and its edge cases are documented in comments and tests. I have no blocking issues, only design notes.
Design notes
TryInfer is doing too many jobs. One method handles nullable unwrapping, generic parameters, arrays, tuple/generic matching (including cross-family tuples) and base/interface candidates, and InferenceMode switches its behaviour in at least five places. The tuple branch (lines ~108-129) is hard to follow because of the interleaved continues and mode checks. I'd split it into a structural walk (last-occurrence-wins) and a strict candidate validator, sharing small nullable/array helpers. That makes it easier to check that the generator and reflection paths agree, which AGENTS.md requires.
Allocation in discovery/invocation paths. TryMergeCandidate and the interface loop allocate a Dictionary copy per candidate, and also call SubstituteCandidateParameters and MakeGenericType per candidate. That is fine for rare generic sole-tuple rows, but I'd add an early return when the parameter type has no generic parameters, or cache by (parameterType, argumentType), and measure on a large data source, per the repo's hot-path guidance.
Failure contract of TryInfer. On false, callers must discard the bindings, because Structural mode writes into the caller's dictionary as it goes. That is easy to get wrong later. Working on a copy and committing on success (as TryMergeCandidate already does) would be safe by construction.
Order independence. Requiring all matching interface candidates to produce identical bindings is a good decision. The structural branch is order-dependent by design (last occurrence wins), so a note in the docs table about that asymmetry would help users.
Trimming/AOT. The UnconditionalSuppressMessage justification says the code is reflection-mode only. Please confirm RequiresUnreferencedCode propagates to every reflection entry point. The AOT publish in the PR description is reassuring.
Positives
Extensive coverage: snapshot tests, boundary helper tests, the generated-vs-reflection matrix, and intentional failure controls.
Validating with IsAssignableFrom on the fully substituted type and catching ArgumentException for constraint violations is the right approach.
Overall this is a solid change. I'd suggest (1) and (3) as follow-ups or before merge, but neither is blocking.
Fixed the array-rank parity finding in e264cde. Reflection now infers array elements only when their ranks match, just as generated discovery does. A mismatched structural element contributes no binding and defers conversion to invocation.
Shared value/reference tuple regressions declare (long, int[,]) rows with null arrays, accept (T, T[]), and specify explicit long. Both modes produce exactly the deduplicated long instantiation; an erroneous inferred int instantiation fails the test body. Added CI count expectations and reviewed the snapshot: only the two new long registrations.
Validation (SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64):
Generated, reflection and published Native AOT sole-tuple matrices each: 83 passed, the same 5 intentional GenericTypeResolutionException controls (88 total, expected exit 2).
Full generator suite: 352 passed, 1 skipped. Focused snapshot recheck passed after the final fixture annotation.
The discard-on-false contract is documented and every current caller discards or throws. Transactional structural inference is optional hardening, not needed for the current callers.
The rule table already explicitly contrasts last-repeated structural binding with strict isolated candidates and rejection of conflicting interface bindings.
RequiresUnreferencedCode annotates the helper and TestGenericTypeResolver entry points. ReflectionTestDataCollector uses its existing class-level IL2026/IL3050 suppressions because reflection discovery is excluded from AOT; the attribute is not literally propagated to every collector method. Native AOT validation passed.
The earlier wait on run 42031407001 is obsolete: it completed successfully. This fix is pushed; fresh head reviews and CI are required before merge. Auto-merge remains unarmed.

Check array ranks before inferring element types.
For a sole-tuple parameter (T[], string) and a declared row (int[,], string), this branch infers T = int despite the different array ranks. The new declared-row discovery path can then add an instantiation that generated discovery does not infer: the generator checks array ranks before matching elements. Compare ranks before recursing so both paths leave T uninferred for this row. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

I read the PR description and SoleTupleInference.cs in full. I skimmed the rest of the diff, and I did not build or run any tests.
What looks good
Splitting inference into Structural mode (last occurrence wins, matching the generator) and Candidate mode (strict) is a clear way to express two different policies.
Interface candidates are rejected when their bindings disagree, so the result no longer depends on GetInterfaces enumeration order. This is the right fix for the reflection/Roslyn ordering difference.
SubstituteCandidateParameters followed by IsAssignableFrom checks the whole constructed type, and it catches constraint violations (ArgumentException) instead of letting them escape. The trimming and AOT suppressions come with justifications, and the PR reports a successful AOT publish.
The PR adds a rule table to project-structure.md, shared fixtures run in both modes, and snapshot updates.
Concerns
Two implementations that must stay aligned. The generator (Roslyn symbols) and the runtime (SoleTupleInference) have to produce the same bindings. The only guard is the doc table plus the fixtures in _7639/SoleTupleInferenceTests.cs. Consider a small table-driven set of (parameter type, argument type, expected bindings) cases that both implementations are checked against. A single new inference edge case could otherwise diverge silently.
Complexity of TryInfer. The generic-type branch mixes the tuple special-case, nullable unwrapping, the Candidate-mode continue for closed arguments, and the mode == Structural early return in one loop. That is hard to review. Extract a InferTupleElements helper, and move the base-class and interface candidate searches into their own methods. The mode flag would then be checked in fewer places.
Fallback return value. The final return mode == Structural || parameterType.IsAssignableFrom(argumentType) makes any unmatched element in Structural mode succeed, with the cast deferred to invocation. The comment explains this, but it means failures only show up at invocation. Add a test asserting the error message when the deferred conversion fails, so users still get a clear diagnostic.
Allocation in discovery paths.TryMergeCandidate and the interface loop each allocate a new Dictionary per candidate. That is acceptable at reflection discovery time, but AGENTS.md asks for minimal allocations in discovery hot paths. If benchmarks show it matters, avoid the copy until a candidate has actually matched the generic definition. The loop already filters on that before copying, so the cost is probably small.
Tuple-only structural walk. Only elements of tuple types take the last-occurrence path. Please confirm there is a test where the same type parameter appears in both a tuple element and an array or generic element, such as (T, List<T>), so the structural and strict rules interact as intended.
No blocking issues found. The design is sound, and my main request is better protection against generator/runtime drift (item 1) and a simpler TryInfer (item 2). Engine integration tests are left to CI, as the repository instructions require.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 8 included reviews per hour; 1 remain after this review.
The earlier wait on run 42031407001 is resolved: it completed successfully. Current head e264cde has a successful Claude review (run 42036422258), a completed Codex verdict with no findings for this exact SHA, and green CI, including both Engine tests and AOT platforms. All review threads are resolved; the outside-diff array-rank finding is also fixed in e264cde.
Disposition of the latest Claude review (comment 6659282378):
A common declarative inference corpus across adapters is already recorded on Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588 (comment 6651590314). Existing shared fixtures and CI enforce the current parity cases; expanding the direct policy corpus remains a nonblocking follow-up.
Invocation-time conversion-failure tests and diagnostic context are already explicitly recorded on Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588 (comment 6651590314). This remains a follow-up; this PR intentionally defers structural conversion to invocation.
Candidate dictionary copies preserve isolation; generic-definition filtering already precedes copying. Measurement before allocation/caching changes is recorded on Simplify declared row shape and generic inference policy inputs #7588; this PR claims no performance improvement.
Confirmed in the current source: RepeatedNestedGenericTupleTests.Value and Reference cover (T, List) and Tuple<T, List>, and Array covers (T, T[]). They assert the last binding is long and the earlier int converts. These fixtures are included in the passing generated/reflection CI matrix.
CodeRabbit's remaining docstring coverage advisory is already dispositioned as outside repository requirements in comment 6658822973. No blocking or undecided findings remain. The current branch protection requires no formal approval, and Assert-PrGreen passes with 29 checks green. Proceeding through Merge-Pr.ps1.

A sole generic tuple parameter could reject data whose closed elements need runtime conversion, or infer different types during generated discovery, reflection discovery and reflection invocation. Reconstruct tuple elements while retaining structural last-occurrence inference, isolating interface/base candidates, and validating their completed types and constraints. Preserve cross-family and nested singleton payload boundaries, including TestDataRow payloads. Reject interface candidates whose validated bindings disagree, so inference does not depend on interface enumeration order. Infer types from containing generic types and include their arguments in generated metadata; shared regressions cover generic and non-generic nested interfaces.
This extracts the sole-tuple deliverable from #7631. Whole-row optional/params tails and explicit-method-type wrapper lookup remain outside this change. Ordinary and spread-column inference controls retain their expected failures. Added static shared fixtures, focused regenerated snapshots, boundary helper tests, CI integration expectations and the inference rule table.
Validation (SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64):
Existing fixture compiler warnings are tracked in #7642; existing AOT fixture warnings were recorded on #7493. Analyzer/code-fixer warning cleanup remains #7410. No new trimming diagnostics from these fixtures.
Closes #7639
