Summary

Pin tracking discovery ownership when a disposable scope owns a service with initializer properties. Direct unit tests cover scope-owned dependencies, TUnit-injected values, and injected values exposed again through direct or nested initializer aliases. Injected values remain tracker-owned and are disposed exactly once; scope-owned objects remain tracked but are left for external disposal.

Each case runs against separate closed generic fixture types using registered source-generated metadata or reflection fallback. Assertions verify which property registry path is active without resetting global registries. No production behavior changes.

Closes #7376

Validation

SDK 10.0.403, macOS arm64, net10.0:

  • ObjectGraphDiscovererOwnershipTests: 8 passed.
  • ExternallyOwnedSingletonTests: 5 passed.
  • ObjectGraphDiscovererPreCheckTests: 9 passed.
  • git diff --check passed.

Existing analyzer and nullable build warnings are tracked in #7410. Engine tests were left to CI per repository instructions.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added ownership tests for reflection-based and source-generated property discovery, covering disposal of initialized dependencies and aliased injected values.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "test: pin tracking discovery ownership for injected aliases" matches the main change. The PR adds ObjectGraphDiscovererOwnershipTests covering scope-owned dependencies, TUnit-injected initializers, and injected values reached through direct or nested aliases. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional test: prefix. It does not mention the reflection and source-generated paths, but that detail is not required.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #7376 requires direct tests/TUnit.UnitTests coverage for a scope-owned initializer dependency, a TUnit-injected initializer, and a shared object reached by both paths. ObjectGraphDiscovererOwnershipTests.cs implements all three cases. Each test runs with sourceGenerated set to both false and true, which covers reflection and source-generated property registries. The shared-object tests assert tracker ownership and verify one disposal after tracker cleanup and external service cleanup.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed change adds one focused unit-test file for the ownership behavior required by issue #7376. The fixtures, registry setup, graph discovery, and disposal assertions support those tests. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated feature changes are present in the provided change summary.

Review: PR 7634 (tests pin tracking discovery ownership)

This is a test-only PR with no production changes. I read the diff but did not run the tests. The coverage matches the stated goal: scope-owned dependencies, injected values, and direct and nested aliases, each in generated and reflection mode. Using separate closed generic fixture types (GeneratedMode / ReflectionMode) to avoid clearing the global registries is a good approach. The HasRegistration and plan-shape assertions also confirm that each mode really exercises the intended path.

Things worth a look, none of them blocking:

  1. Possible parallel-test interference. tracker.DisposeAndClearStaticTrackingAsync() is called twice, once in the body and once in finally. If it clears process-wide static tracking, it could affect other tests running in parallel. The PR avoids resetting registries for exactly that reason. Please confirm this only touches state owned by the local tracker. If it doesn't, consider [NotInParallel] or a narrower cleanup.
  2. Permanent registry registrations. The generated-mode PropertySourceRegistry / InitializerPropertyRegistry registrations are never removed. That is harmless for private closed generic types, but a short comment would help. If Register throws on duplicates, check that a retried test can't hit that.
  3. Readability of CheckOwnership. It has a bool parameter list (injected, alias, sourceGenerated, nestedAlias) and mixes setup, act, and assertions. A small record or enum such as Scenario { ScopeOwned, Injected, NestedAlias, DirectAlias } would make the four test cases self-describing. alias: true, nestedAlias: false is hard to read. Also, the alias / nestedAlias combination produces a state where alias=false makes nestedAlias meaningless.
  4. Fragile setup. TestContext.Current! plus the hand-built TestDetails couples the test to internal construction details. This is acceptable for an internal unit test, but a helper that builds the context would let other ownership tests reuse it.
  5. Coupled Service.Dispose logic. The disposal rule in Service<T>.Dispose (skip disposing Dependency when it equals Injected) encodes the expected ownership behaviour inside the fixture, so the final DisposeCount == 1 assertions partly verify the fixture itself. It models a plausible DI scope, but a comment saying so would help.

Overall this is a solid regression pin. I'd address item 1 before merge and treat the rest as optional cleanups.

Reviewed Claude’s five suggestions against head 5ab8db0b471827a64bb885ad173933d539ba75b3:

  1. ObjectTracker.DisposeAndClearStaticTrackingAsync snapshots the instance _sessionReferences.Keys and releases only that tracker’s references. UntrackObject checks/decrements that instance’s ownership before touching the shared counter; disposal requires the shared count to reach zero. It cannot release another tracker’s object references. The second call is an empty, idempotent cleanup after successful untracking. The method also clears the shared async callback error bag, but these fixtures register no callbacks; this is separate from object ownership and disposal. No serialization is needed for the ownership assertions.
  2. Both registries use concurrent-dictionary index assignment in Register, so repeated registration replaces the entry without throwing. The existing fixture comment explains that only the private closed generated-mode types are registered and process-wide registries are not cleared. Retaining these entries is intentional.
  3. Keeping the optional boolean-helper refactor out of this regression pin: the four public test names and named arguments identify each case; the helper is private and bounded to this fixture.
  4. Keeping context construction local: this is one internal fixture and no shared helper is needed for this change.
  5. The existing comment in Service.Dispose explains that injected aliases remain TUnit-owned, and the external cleanup call explicitly models scope disposal. Assertions before external cleanup independently check tracker disposal and ownership.

No blocking findings remain; Codex’s completed clean verdict also names this exact head. Promoting to ready for CI and the fresh ready-for-review Claude run.

Review

This is a test-only PR. It adds ObjectGraphDiscovererOwnershipTests, which covers scope-owned dependencies and injected values exposed again through aliases, in both source-generated and reflection modes. I found no blocking issues.

  • Registration: InitializerPropertyRegistry.Register assigns by indexer, so registering the same closed-generic types on each parameterised run is idempotent. Using separate closed generic types per mode avoids touching the global registries.
  • Registry checks: the HasRegistration and plan assertions confirm which path is active. Without them, a test could pass while exercising the wrong mode.
  • Disposal: the assertions check that an injected value is disposed exactly once and a scope-owned one is left alone. The service.Dispose() call afterwards simulates external cleanup.

Non-blocking suggestions:

  1. Fixture setup: CheckOwnership<TMode> does registration, graph construction, fake TestContext setup, tracking and cleanup in one method, and bool injected, bool alias, bool nestedAlias is hard to read at the call sites. A small Scenario record, or named arguments, would make each test state its intent. Moving the TestDetails and TestContext construction into a helper would also help.
  2. Test names: InjectedInitializer_AliasedByScopeOwnedDependency relies on the default nestedAlias: true, while its sibling passes nestedAlias: false. Naming the nested case explicitly would stop the two from being confused.
  3. Cleanup: the finally block calls DisposeAndClearStaticTrackingAsync a second time. That is fine if it is idempotent, but a short comment would say so.

Approving as-is.

Superseded by #7635, which replaces the permanent ownership marks with row scope owner handles and carries this PR's full eight-case ownership suite forward against that implementation. The adapted tests cover explicit generated/reflection registries and pass in both execution modes; they also account for reflection execution disabling generated property injection. #7635 closes #7376 together with #7378, avoiding a merge that would leave these tests calling removed internal methods.
