fix(engine): deliver row builder-context events to the test and raise OnDispose once per test (#7381) - #7384
Part 1 of #7205, split from #7328 (over the rework budget). Reuses that branch's first commits, narrowed to this part's scope.
What changes
Row events reach the test.DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute<TScope> (and any data source) subscribes OnDispose on TestBuilderContext.Current.Events while its row is fetched. Those subscriptions never reached the test, so no scope was disposed. The test context now shares the per-iteration builder context's events (TestBuilderContext.ShareEventsWith, lazy like ShareStateBagWith), in both the source-generated and reflection paths of TestBuilder.
OnDispose is raised once per test (TestOnDisposeRaiser.RaiseOnceAsync, guarded by AbstractExecutableTest.TryClaimOnDispose), in TestCoordinator's final cleanup after the last attempt, so a retry no longer sees a disposed scope. Tests that never reach the coordinator raise it too: skipped because a dependency failed, cancelled before start, removed by circular-dependency detection, and every test when static property initialization aborts the session.
The ownership fix in #7382 is included: disposable DI scopes own their resolved services and nested initializer objects; the tracker still initializes them but leaves disposal to the scope. TUnit-injected property values and services from non-disposable scopes remain tracker-owned. The scheduler also releases unstarted scopes when parallel grouping throws.
Behavior change (release notes)
ITestEvents.OnDispose handlers used to run once per attempt, before the test class instance was disposed. They now run once per test, after the final attempt's instance is disposed, and also for tests that never run. Documented in ITestEvents.OnDispose, docs/writing-tests/dependency-injection.md and the TestContext interface migration page.
tests/TUnit.TestProject--treenode-filter "/*/TUnit.TestProject.Bugs._7205/*/*" on net10.0, source-generated and --reflection: 20 total, 14 passed, 3 intentional failures (Fails, two circular-dependency tests), 3 skipped; the observer asserts every scope and each scope-owned service is disposed exactly once; nested initializers still initialize, TUnit-injected properties remain tracker-owned, and non-disposable scopes retain tracker disposal.
With the lent-events drop reverted, the observer fails (the temporary instance's scope gets disposed by the first test), so the test pins the excluded behavior.
Regression filters (Bugs._7157, *Dispos*, *Retry*, EventReceiverTests, LastTestEventReceiverTests) in both modes: identical to an origin/main baseline.
tests/TUnit.UnitTests net10.0: 689 passed, 3 skipped, 0 failed. Includes singleton ownership before/after tracker counting and release of counts after ownership marking.
tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests (Issue7205Tests counts updated) not run locally per AGENTS.md; CI covers it.
No public API signature changes (doc remarks only on ITestEvents.OnDispose).
Test disposal callbacks now run once after the final attempt and after the test instance is disposed, including for skipped tests and tests that never start.
Dependency-injection scopes are disposed consistently for skipped, cancelled-before-start, dependency-skipped, and circular-dependency-removed tests. Retries share a scope, while each repeat iteration gets its own.
Services owned by a disposable dependency-injection scope are no longer disposed separately by the test framework.

Commit ee38482080f936a30c1ae028fed0a2d591ba24b6 preserves failed-row scope events in both modes, balances externally owned reference counts, and preserves TUnit ownership through nested fixture aliases. Fresh net10.0 unit suite: 690 passed, 3 skipped. Targeted _7205 probes in each mode: 22 total, 14 passed, 5 intentional failures, 3 skipped, with disposal observer passing. Engine tests remain for CI.
…ch row (#7205)
Data sources subscribe on TestBuilderContext.Current.Events while their row
is fetched. The test-specific context started with empty events, so those
subscriptions were lost and DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute<TScope>
never disposed its scopes. The test context now shares the per-iteration
context's events, and the class row's first fetch runs against its own
context whose events travel with the unclaimed row to the test that takes
or tracks it.
… paths
Retries reuse the row's objects, so a DI scope disposed after the first
attempt broke every retry. Skipped tests returned before OnDispose was
raised, so their scopes leaked. OnDispose now runs once in the
coordinator's final cleanup; the instance is still disposed per attempt.
Refs #7205
…hey reach the coordinator (#7205)
A test skipped because a dependency failed, or stopped by the run's cancellation before it
started, never reached TestCoordinator, so its OnDispose callbacks never ran. Its DI services
are externally owned now, so the session-end sweep no longer disposed them either. Raise
OnDispose once per test from those paths too, guarded so it runs only once.
Also throw instead of Debug.Assert when a class row's events would replace existing events.
…etection (#7205)
RemoveCircularDependenciesAsync fails those tests before execution, so they
never reach TestCoordinator and their OnDispose was never raised. The scope
services are externally owned now, so nothing else disposed them.
…read (#7205)
ShareEventsWith no longer caches the source's container, so a later assignment to the
source's Events reaches the sharing context. Docs: [Repeat] iterations are separate
tests with their own scopes; only retries reuse a scope.
…t OnDispose once per test (#7381)
The temporary instance that reads instance method rows is built from the
class row's first fetch, and later method rows can hold services that
fetch's scope resolved. Delivering the lent row's events to the first
test disposed that scope under the later tests, so the lent row no longer
carries its events (session-lifetime disposal is #7383).
Also raise OnDispose for every test when static property initialization
aborts the session, scope the #7205 tests to this part, and document the
OnDispose timing change in ITestEvents and the docs.

Walkthrough
The change transfers data-source event subscriptions from class-row fetches to tests that take those rows. The engine raises each test’s OnDispose callbacks once, including on covered paths where execution does not start. Dependency-injection scope ownership and disposal behavior are updated and tested.

Summary
Capture and transfer row events src/TUnit.Core/TestBuilderContext.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Building/TestBuilder.cs
Builder contexts share event subscriptions. Class-row fetches capture events and preserve them with returned rows. Tests receive their row’s events in batch and streaming builds.
Disposable scopes mark resolved objects as externally owned. Object graph discovery propagates ownership, and the tracker releases references without disposing externally owned objects.
Raise disposal callbacks once per test src/TUnit.Core/AbstractExecutableTest.cs, src/TUnit.Core/Interfaces/ITestEvents.cs, src/TUnit.Engine/Services/TestExecution/*, src/TUnit.Engine/Scheduling/*, docs/docs/migration/testcontext-interface-organization.md, docs/docs/writing-tests/dependency-injection.md
The engine claims and raises callbacks once per test. It raises them after execution and on covered skip, cancellation-before-start, initialization-failure, and circular-dependency paths. The documentation describes callback and scope disposal timing.
Validate disposal and ownership cases tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7205/*, tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7205Tests.cs, tests/TUnit.UnitTests/ExternallyOwnedSingletonTests.cs
New tests cover scope and service disposal across data rows, retries, skipped tests, dependency failures, and circular-dependency removal. Unit tests check externally owned object tracking and disposal counts.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the two main changes: delivering row builder-context events to the test, and raising OnDispose once per test. The raw summary and objectives confirm both are central to the changeset (TestBuilder, TestBuilderContext, TestOnDisposeRaiser, TestCoordinator, TestScheduler). The scope-ownership changes (ObjectTracker, ObjectGraphDiscoverer, DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute) are not named, but the title does not need to cover every detail. The title is 101 characters, slightly long, but it is specific and clear. The '(#7381)' reference points to the linked issue, while the PR objectives identify the PR itself as #7384, which is a minor inconsistency but does not affect the title's relevance.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR addresses both directly linked coding targets. For #7381, TestBuilder transfers per-row events through TestBuilderContext in the class-row, method-row, source-generated, and reflection flows, while the lent temporary-instance events remain undelivered. TestOnDisposeRaiser.RaiseOnceAsync and TryClaimOnDispose provide once-per-test delivery after final instance disposal. TestCoordinator, TestRunner, and TestScheduler cover retries and tests that do not reach the coordinator. The event timing is documented. For #7382, disposable DI results and nested initializer objects are marked externally owned, while TUnit-injected values remain tracker-owned. Non-disposable scopes retain tracker disposal. The added regression tests cover both execution modes and exactly-once disposal.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The linked issue #7381 explicitly excludes failed data-row tests and assigns them to #7326. This PR adds failed-row event preservation in TestBuilder and adds _7205 cases for failed class-row and method-row generation. The current PR description also identifies this behavior as preserved scope events for rows that fail generic resolution. The ownership changes are in scope because #7382 is also directly linked, but the failed-data-row handling is outside the stated scope of #7381.
Resolution
Move the failed-data-row event handling and its dedicated regression coverage to #7326. Keep only the event delivery and cleanup paths required by #7381, plus the ownership behavior required by directly linked issue #7382. Reassess the out-of-scope changes after the failed-row changes are removed or separately linked.

I read TestOnDisposeRaiser, the TestCoordinator finally block and the TestRunner/TestScheduler call sites. I found no blocking issues, and I did not run the tests.
What looks good
TryClaimOnDispose (an Interlocked.Exchange) guarantees OnDispose is raised at most once per test. That makes it safe for every skip, cancel and abort path to call the raiser without coordinating with the others.
Raising OnDispose in the coordinator's finally, after the last attempt, fixes the retry case where a later attempt saw a disposed scope. It also runs before UntrackObjects, so the ordering is sensible.
The early-exit paths are covered: dependency-failed skip, cancelled before start, circular-dependency removal and static-property-init abort. The scheduler/runner call sites check HasStartedExecution, so there is no double raise. The claim flag would catch one anyway.
Dropping the events of a lent first fetch matches main and avoids disposing a scope the temporary instance still uses. The PR description explains this well.
The behaviour change (once per test, after instance disposal) is documented in ITestEvents and the migration docs.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
In the abort path at TestScheduler.cs:112, the loop runs OnDispose handlers serially. One slow or throwing handler is already logged and swallowed. If sessions can be large, consider bounding that loop, or at least making sure it honours a timeout, so an abort cannot hang on disposal.
ShareEventsWith makes the test context follow the source's Events. Please confirm that a builder context is never shared across several tests in the same iteration. If it were, handlers would be claimed by whichever test raised first. A test asserting two tests from one class row each dispose their own scope would pin this down.
The Issue7205Tests engine test only runs in CI, which is expected. Please check that the retry case (scope alive across all attempts) has explicit coverage in DependencyInjectionScopeDisposalTests.
Overall this is a clean design. A single idempotent raiser used from every terminal path is better than scattering dispose logic. Approving in spirit.
Dispositions for the non-blocking suggestions in the Claude review of 4f09e0d:
Abort-path loop (TestScheduler.cs:112): no change. It calls the same TestOnDisposeRaiser.RaiseOnceAsync as the coordinator's normal path, and neither path puts a timeout on user OnDispose handlers. A throwing handler is already logged and swallowed. The abort path runs once per session, only after static property initialization has thrown, so it adds no cost or hang risk that the normal path does not already have.
Builder context shared across tests: verified that it is not. Each test gets its own testSpecificContext that calls ShareEventsWith(contextAccessor.Current), and contextAccessor.Current is a new TestBuilderContext for each iteration (TestBuilder.cs:299, :489, :2618). ClassRowScopeTests pins this: two tests come from one class row, and the observer asserts two scopes, each disposed exactly once.
Retry coverage: already present. RetriedScopeTests uses [Retry(1)], asserts that the scope is still alive during each attempt, and the observer asserts one scope disposed exactly once (AssertScopes(nameof(RetriedScopeTests), 1)).
I read the diff for the engine, core and docs changes. I did not build the PR or run any tests, and I did not read the new test project files in full.
Overall: the design is sound. Sharing the per-iteration builder context's events with the test fixes the root cause: scopes subscribed in OnDispose never reached the test. Deferring OnDispose to a single place after the last attempt makes retries safe. Using TryClaimOnDispose (an Interlocked.Exchange) as the guard in TestOnDisposeRaiser is a simple way to cover the several skip and cancel paths without double-raising.
What I checked and found sound:
ShareEventsWith resolves the source lazily on each read, so no events container is allocated for tests that have no subscriptions. That fits the hot-path allocation rule. The setter clears _eventsSource, so an explicit assignment still wins.
The fail-loud InvalidOperationException in TakeOrFetchAsync is a reasonable invariant check.
The source-generated and reflection paths both get the same changes. TestBuilder.cs has matching edits in two places, plus the FetchFirstClassRowAsync helper, so this meets the requirement that the two modes behave identically.
Every test that never reaches the coordinator now raises OnDispose: dependency-failed skips, cancellation, circular-dependency removal, and static-property init failure.
Suggestions, none blocking:
Behavior change.OnDispose now runs once per test, after the instance is disposed, instead of once per attempt before it. This breaks existing user handlers that touch the instance. The docs and ITestEvents remarks cover it, and the PR description flags it for release notes. Make sure it appears in the release notes as a breaking change.
Repeated call sites.TestOnDisposeRaiser.RaiseOnceAsync is now called from about five places, each with the guard !test.HasStartedExecution or equivalent. A single "test finalised without running" helper on the scheduler would keep these paths from drifting apart. The next skip path someone adds could easily miss the call. Consider a unit test that enumerates the skip paths.
Stray BOMs. The diff adds a UTF-8 BOM to ITestEvents.cs and TestScheduler.cs, on the namespace and using lines. Both look accidental, and they add diff noise. Please drop them.
Test counts.Issue7205Tests hard-codes counts (18 total, 12 passed, 3 failed, 3 not executed). They will need an edit every time a probe class is added. This is fine for now, but keep it in mind.
Nothing here needs to change before merging, apart from the BOM cleanup and confirming the release-note wording.

[High impact] The PR appears safe to merge; both previous findings are fixed and no new actionable issue was found.
Summary
The PR carries row callbacks into each test and raises OnDispose once after the final attempt. It also leaves scope-owned services to their DI scope.
Each test gets its row's cleanup events exactly once.
Disposable dependency-injection scopes own the services they resolve.

…path, keep the scope observer out of the Pass sweep (#7381)
- Raise OnDispose for unstarted tests in the scheduler's finally, independent of
result publishing, and when circular-dependency removal is cancelled.
- Report each not-started test separately, so one rejected message does not stop
the rest; raise OnDispose before publishing on the dependency-skip and
circular-dependency paths.
- Untag DependencyInjectionScopeDisposalObserverTests: the [EngineTest=Pass] sweep
pulled in its by-design failing dependency and excluded the circular tests it
asserts, failing ExpectedStateTests.Pass.
- Drop the BOM added to ITestEvents.cs and TestScheduler.cs.
CI (ExpectedStateTests.Pass, Engine tests and AOT on all OSes): the scope observer was tagged [EngineTest(ExpectedResult.Pass)], so the Pass sweep ran it. Running it pulled in its by-design failing dependency DependencySkippedScopeTests.Fails. The sweep also excluded the Failure-tagged circular tests whose scopes the observer counts, so it found 0 scopes where it expected 2. The observer is now untagged, and only Issue7205Tests runs it, together with its whole folder. Locally, in both source-generated and reflection modes:
the _7205 folder gives 18 total, 12 passed, 3 failed (by design) and 3 skipped, matching Issue7205Tests;
the folder's [EngineTest=Pass] subset passes;
FailFastReporting7119 still reports every test exactly once.
Review threads (CodeRabbit, Greptile): each not-started test is reported in its own try/catch. OnDispose for unstarted tests is now raised in the scheduler's finally, whether or not reporting succeeds, and also when circular-dependency removal is cancelled. The dependency-skip and circular paths raise OnDispose before they publish.
Claude review, item 3 (BOMs): removed from ITestEvents.cs and TestScheduler.cs.
Claude review, items 1, 2 and 4: item 1 needs no code change. The behavior change is already called out in the PR body for the release notes. Item 2 is partly addressed: the scheduler now has one unstarted-test sweep, so a new skip path is covered by default. Item 4 needs no code change.
I read the diff and the surrounding TestCoordinator, TestRunner and TestScheduler code. I did not run the tests. I found no blocking problems. The design is sound and the scope is sensible.
What I checked
Event sharing.TestBuilderContext.ShareEventsWith resolves the source's events on every read, so a later assignment to the source's Events still reaches the test. Events and EventsIfCreated are consistent with each other. It adds no allocation unless something subscribes, which suits the hot path.
Raise-once.TryClaimOnDispose uses Interlocked.Exchange, so the several paths (coordinator, runner, scheduler) cannot double-raise. Raising happens in the coordinator's finally, after the last retry attempt and before UntrackObjects, so a retry no longer sees a disposed scope.
Tests that never run. The dependency-failed skip, cancellation before start, circular-dependency removal and the static-property-init abort are each covered. The raise comes before publishing, so a rejected bus message cannot skip it. Reporting is now best-effort per test (TryReportIfNotStartedAsync), so one failure no longer stops the remaining tests from being released.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Re-execution.TryClaimOnDispose is a one-way latch, and the coordinator clears Result and timings 'for repeated tests'. If the same AbstractExecutableTest can be executed again, for example by a re-run or a dynamic re-queue, its second execution would never raise OnDispose. If that can happen, reset the latch where HasStartedExecution is set. If it cannot, a short comment saying so would help.
Duplicated iteration-context setup.FetchFirstClassRowAsync and CreateInstanceForMethodDataSources each build a TestBuilderContext that copies InitializedAttributes and ClassConstructor and calls ShareStateBagWith. A small TestBuilderContext.CreateChild(...) helper would keep these in step. A field added later and copied in only one place would be easy to miss.
Behavior change.OnDispose now runs once per test, after instance disposal, instead of once per attempt before it. Third-party handlers that touch the instance will break. The ITestEvents remarks and the docs cover it, and I would also put it prominently in the release notes.

Part 1 of #7205, split from #7328 (over the rework budget). Reuses that branch's first commits, narrowed to this part's scope.
What changes
DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute<TScope>(and any data source) subscribesOnDisposeonTestBuilderContext.Current.Eventswhile its row is fetched. Those subscriptions never reached the test, so no scope was disposed. The test context now shares the per-iteration builder context's events (TestBuilderContext.ShareEventsWith, lazy likeShareStateBagWith), in both the source-generated and reflection paths ofTestBuilder.UnclaimedClassRowto the test that takes the row. A row handed back withReturnkeeps its events.main(not delivered to any test). Delivering them to the first test would dispose a scope whose services the temporary instance returned in later method rows (the blocking Codex finding on fix(engine): deliver builder-context events to the test built from each row #7328). Session-end disposal of that scope is DI scope disposal (#7205) part 3: dispose session-lifetime scopes (static properties, generic partitions, temporary instances incl. lent constructor rows) at session end #7383.OnDisposeis raised once per test (TestOnDisposeRaiser.RaiseOnceAsync, guarded byAbstractExecutableTest.TryClaimOnDispose), inTestCoordinator's final cleanup after the last attempt, so a retry no longer sees a disposed scope.
ITestEvents.OnDisposehandlers used to run once per attempt, before the test class instance was disposed. They now run once per test, after the final attempt's instance is disposed, and also for tests that never run. Documented inITestEvents.OnDispose,docs/writing-tests/dependency-injection.mdand theTestContextinterface migration page.Out of scope
