Infer generic test class types from method data sources in both modes - #7571
Generic test classes now infer class type arguments from declared method-level [MethodDataSource] rows in both source-generated and reflection discovery. Supported rows include tuples, wrapped reference arrays, fields/properties, asynchronous sources, external providers, inherited generic shapes and overloads selected by Arguments.
Sources that infer the same class types retain their rows. When no source supplies class types, uninferable method sources report discovery failures with guidance to declare concrete row types or use [GenerateGenericTest]. The mixed inferred/untyped-source policy is shared between the metadata modes.
Constructor-row matching preserves supplied optional values and retains omitted defaults for compatible explicit class types. Runtime partitioning filters incompatible supplied values and avoids duplicate rows when explicit and inferred types match. Bare singleton rows unwrap their TestDataRow before binding a whole reference-tuple parameter; spread reference-tuple columns infer class types in both modes.
Supported _7224 fixtures: 65/65 pass in generated and reflection modes, and in a fresh macOS arm64 Native AOT executable.
Unsupported fixtures retain five expected discovery failures and one explicit-type pass in each mode.
Full generator suite: 344 passed, one skipped; intentional Tests7224 snapshots reviewed.
Runtime class-source partition tests: 14/14; data-source helper tests: 7/7. Shared variance tests compare generated and reflection metadata and reject value-type boxing as generic covariance.
Engine integration expectations updated; TUnit.Engine.Tests remains CI-only per repository instructions.
Nonblocking follow-ups: type-free class-row/source diagnostic combinations (#7390), excess non-collecting tuple validation and reflection rejection (#7463), distinct uninferable-source failure IDs (#7595), analyzer normalization (#7587/#7573), and inference-policy/caching refactoring (#7588). Additional nested supplied-constructor-row partition evidence is recorded in #7377. Existing AOT warning debt remains tracked in #7430/#7493 and their related issues. Parallel MSBuild worker exits reproduced during validation are recorded in #7468; explicit single-worker builds passed.
The earlier blocker run 41862723231 completed successfully. Latest fixes are in 3dd509b; fresh review and CI are required for this head. Auto-merge remains unarmed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Generic test classes can infer type arguments from method data sources, constructor data, tuples, arrays, and optional parameters more reliably.
Explicit generic types can be used alongside data sources that cannot infer every type argument.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of conflicting or invalid inferred types, including clearer failures when types cannot be resolved or violate constraints.
Fixed data-row binding for wrapped arrays, tuple values, and omitted optional constructor arguments.
Generic class type inference now uses method data-source row types in source generation and reflection discovery. The changes add handling for wrapped arrays, tuples, optional and collecting parameters, constructor-row matching, and sources that cannot infer usable class types.
The source generator tracks explicit and inferred class types, selects matching sources, and conditionally reports method sources that infer no class types. Tests and generated snapshots cover unresolved sources, constraint failures, explicit types, and source partitions.
Reflection discovery infers class types from declared method-source row types and separates class and method generic parameters. It records failed-test metadata for sources that do not infer usable types and checks inferred types against class constraints.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#7224] requires reflection discovery to infer generic class type arguments from method-level [MethodDataSource] rows and to match source-generated behavior. ReflectionTestDataCollector now reads declared member row types through InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodSource. The source generator applies the same method-source inference and uninferable-source policy. The changes cover scalar, tuple, array, async, external-provider, overload, interface, base-type, nullable, and constructor-related rows. Regression fixtures, snapshots, and engine expectations cover the required behavior. The separate class-level source issue #7208 is not required by #7224.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes stay connected to [#7224]. Inference policy, declared-row handling, constraint reporting, source partitioning, constructor binding, and generated and reflection tests support method-source generic class inference. DataSourceHelpers.UnwrapTupleWithTypes now preserves excess tuple columns so trailing collecting parameters receive them and invalid excess arguments are not silently discarded. InstanceFactoryGenerator supplies omitted optional defaults needed by inferred constructor rows. These changes have a direct connection to the supported row-shape and constructor scenarios. No demonstrated unrelated change was found.

A rabbit checks each row for type, Then spreads the arrays just right. Tuples share their columns wide, Optional values wait inside. Sources find the class they fit, And missing types are marked as such.
Moving reflection mode onto the source generator's declared-row inference is a good change, and it removes about 90 lines of duplicated inference from the generator. I read the diff only. I did not build it or run any tests.
Concerns
Possible breaking change: a silent drop becomes a hard failure.
The new generator loop (TestMetadataGenerator.cs ~1881) and the reflection CreateFailedTestMetadata path both report a discovery failure for any [MethodDataSource] whose declared row type can't infer the class types.
This includes sources that return object, object[] or IEnumerable<object[]>. In reflection the check is rowType != typeof(object).
Consider a generic class whose method has [Arguments(1)], which does infer T, plus an untyped [MethodDataSource]. Before this PR, that source was ignored for inference. Now the whole method fails discovery.
Suggested approach: report the failure only when no source ([Arguments] or [MethodDataSource]) infers the class types for that method. Alternatively, treat untyped sources as "unknown", not "uninferable". Please also add a regression test for the mixed case.
The generator and reflection modes decide differently when to fail.
The generator skips the failure when the class has any data-source attribute, including base types, or [GenerateGenericTest].
Reflection only checks generateGenericTestAttributes.Length == 0, within the method-rows path.
The AGENTS.md rule is that the two modes must behave identically here. Extract the predicate (when a source is uninferable and should be reported) into one shared policy. GenericMethodInferencePolicy already exists for this purpose.
The inferClassParameters boolean threaded through InferTypesFromTypedRow and MapTypedRowParameters is fragile.
It flips the meaning of DeclaringMethod is null through (DeclaringMethod is null) != inferClassParameters.
It also adds special cases, such as skipping UnwrapFunc and FindTestDataRowType, and a new tuple-parameter branch.
An enum or a predicate for "which generic parameters are in scope" would be easier to read and less error-prone.
The (joinsDuplicateMethodSources || testMethod is {...}) && !isClassRow condition is similarly hard to follow. Name it.
A minor allocation in the generator.methodDataSourceBucket ?? Enumerable.Empty<AttributeData>() and the repeated GetAttributes().Any(...) run per test method. Compute them once per class.
Tests are good: the two snapshots, the reflection and source-generated fixtures, and the engine assertions. Once point 1 is resolved or confirmed intended, this looks good.
The PR infers generic class types from declared method-source rows in generated and reflection discovery.
Generic test classes infer their types from declared method-source rows.
Constructor rows keep compatible values and preserve omitted defaults.
Uninferable method sources report discovery failures when no class types are supplied.
thomhurst accepted the mixed inferred/untyped-source behavior intentionally: unknown sources require explicit class types rather than changing otherwise valid inferred tests. That earlier finding remains withdrawn.

Uninferable member sources report a failure only when neither class sources, explicit class types, nor other method rows supply an instantiation. The mixed [Arguments(1)]/untyped-source regression now passes in both modes, preserving the existing inferred row.
Both adapters call GenericClassInferencePolicy.ReportsUninferredMethodSource; reflection invokes its method-row path only when there are no class data sources. Explicit types and inferred method rows are included in the shared decision.
Replaced the scope boolean with GenericParameterScope and named the class-only inference predicate used for row grouping.
Consolidated the class-source predicates into one attribute scan per inference visit, skipped for non-generic classes, without materializing another collection. Retained the empty-enumeration fallback; a wider class-level cache is unnecessary for these correctness fixes.
Also fixed all inline findings: wrapped reference arrays infer their spread element types, member-source class constraint violations use the existing failure collector in both modes, and source generation maps implemented interfaces/base types.
Validation: 17 supported fixtures pass in each mode and in a macOS arm64 Native AOT executable. Unsupported fixtures produce exactly two expected discovery failures and one explicit-type pass in each mode. Tests7224 (two reviewed snapshots), Tests7106 (one snapshot), and reflection _7106 (62 pass, 2 skip) pass on SDK 10.0.403/net10.0. Engine integration expectations updated for CI; TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally. Existing publish warnings are tracked by #7430 and #7493.
I read the diff and the earlier review threads. I did not build it or run tests.
Good
Reflection mode now reuses the typed-row inference (InferTypesFromTypedRow) through a GenericParameterScope parameter. That is better than adding a parallel inference path.
The source generator now routes InferClassTypesFromMethodDataSource through InferTypesFromMethodDataSourceRowType. This removes about 90 lines of duplicated, weaker logic (no arrays, properties, fields, or interface matching).
Both modes call the shared GenericClassInferencePolicy.ReportsUninferredMethodSource. That keeps them consistent, which AGENTS.md requires.
The earlier review points have follow-ups according to the PR description: mixed sources, reference-array spreading, and generic interface and base-type matching.
Suggestions
Duplicated reference-array spread rule. The same "reference-type SZ array spreads to its element" rule is now written separately in the generator (IsReferenceType), in GetDeclaredRowType (IsValueType: false, IsPointer: false), and in UnwrapArray. The three conditions are not guaranteed to be equivalent. For example, a generic-parameter element or a pointer element could behave differently in each. Put the rule in one place, ideally next to TestDataRowUnwrapper, and add a test that compares the generator and runtime results.
Boolean-heavy flag computation.classTypeArgumentsSupplied and hasAnyClassDataSource are now computed for every generic class, not only inside the methodArgumentsAttributes.Count > 0 branch. The loop calls GetAttributesIncludingBaseTypes for every generic test method, which adds cost to the generator's hot path. Compute it lazily or cache it per class.
GenericParameterScope default.MapTypedRowParameters(..., scope = Method) keeps a default that silently picks the wrong scope if a caller forgets to pass it. Make the parameter required so the compiler catches a missed call site.
Failure message wording. The message says "Use a source with a concrete declared row type or add [GenerateGenericTest]". The same text is built in two places (the generator and the engine). Define it once in a shared constant.
Test and AOT note. The PR reports a Native AOT publish and source-generated and reflection fixtures, which is good. ExtractDataSources and GetDeclaredMemberType run on a reflection path. Please confirm they carry the right trim annotations, since CI trim warnings may surface there.
None of these block the PR. The design is sound, and I'd merge once CI is green and items 1 and 3 are looked at.
Fixed the wrapped-array two-parameter finding in 4fd4387 and resolved both threads with evidence. The mixed-source behavior remains the intentional compatibility policy requested by the earlier Claude review; explicit [GenerateGenericTest] includes uninferable rows.
Claude's nonblocking suggestions: the mapping scope is now required, and the separate method-inference entry point preserves its three-argument signature used by the parity tests. The declared-row extractor passes its spread flag to inference instead of recomputing it there. Roslyn and runtime still require their respective symbol/type adapters; a broader predicate unification and per-class cache are follow-ups rather than correctness requirements here. The diagnostic text remains local to the two adapters. ExtractDataSources only reads attributes from ICustomAttributeProvider; GetDeclaredMemberType already annotates the required methods/properties/fields and the runtime discovery boundary. The new declared-row overload retains its trim suppression.
Validation on SDK 10.0.403/net10.0: 18 supported fixtures pass in each discovery mode; Native AOT publish succeeds and all 18 pass in the native executable. Tests7224 snapshots (2), declared-row tests (23), typed-row parity tests (30), and parameter-binding tests (30) pass. Unsupported reflection fixtures retain exactly two expected discovery failures and one pass. Engine integration expectations updated; TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally per repository instructions. Existing compiler/publish warning debt is tracked in #7410, #7428, #7438, #7430 and #7493.
I read the diff and the earlier threads and comments. I did not build the PR or run tests.
Good
Reflection and source-generation modes now share GenericClassInferencePolicy.ReportsUninferredMethodSource. That meets the AGENTS.md rule that metadata collection behaves identically in both modes.
The source generator now reuses the typed-row inference helper. That removes the older, weaker duplicate logic, which handled no arrays, properties, fields or interface matching.
The author's last update covers the earlier findings: mixed inferred and untyped sources, reference-array spreading, interface and base-type matching, and class-constraint violations. The new tests cover each case in both modes and in Native AOT.
Remaining suggestions (non-blocking)
One home for the array-spread rule. The "reference-type SZ array spreads to its element" rule exists in more than one place (generator and runtime). A single shared helper, or a test that compares the generator result with the runtime result, would stop the two from drifting apart.
Cost in the generator. The attribute scans for class-source detection now run for every generic test method. Cache the result per class symbol if the generator benchmarks show a regression.
Required scope parameter. If GenericParameterScope still has a default value on MapTypedRowParameters, make it required. A forgotten call site would then fail to compile instead of silently using the wrong scope.
One failure message. The "concrete declared row type or [GenerateGenericTest]" text is built in both modes. A shared constant would keep the wording the same.
The design is sound. Once CI is green, I'd merge, ideally after looking at items 1 and 3.
Fixed both new findings in 300222c and resolved the threads with evidence. Nullable class parameters infer their underlying row type; conflicting interface bindings are rejected regardless of interface declaration order.
Validation: Tests7224 (2 snapshots) and Tests7106 (1 snapshot) pass. All 19 supported fixtures pass in source-generated and reflection modes. Unsupported fixtures produce exactly 4 expected discovery failures and 1 pass in each mode. Engine integration assertions updated for CI; TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally. No reflection paths changed in this follow-up, so Native AOT was not republished. The analyzer currently rejects the valid nullable case; #7573 tracks it and its runtime regression uses a scoped diagnostic suppression.
I read the generator and core changes in the diff. I did not build the PR or run any tests.
Overall: reflection mode now infers generic class types from method-level [MethodDataSource] rows using the same declared-row logic as the generator. That replaces a second, divergent inference implementation, which fits the repo's requirement that both modes behave the same.
Earlier concern (silent drop becoming a hard failure): this looks addressed. GenericClassInferencePolicy.ReportsUninferredMethodSource only reports when no class data source, no [GenerateGenericTest] and no inferred method types exist. Mixed inferred and untyped sources therefore keep their tests.
Suggestions
Inference conflicts are silent.ProcessTypeForGenerics now returns bool, and a conflicting binding (for example T bound to int and then string) makes the whole inference return null. The user then gets the generic "cannot infer… use a concrete declared row type" message, which does not say the real problem is a conflict. Passing a reason back, or at least naming the conflicting parameter in the failure message, would make this much easier to diagnose.
The inference flags are computed twice.hasExplicitClassTypes, hasAnyClassDataSource and classTypeArgumentsSupplied are now computed once up front, which is good. ReflectionTestDataCollector appears to have its own equivalent logic. A small shared "class type source" descriptor, as GenericClassInferencePolicy already does for the decision itself, would stop the two modes drifting apart.
Reference-array spreading is described twice. The generator unwraps reference arrays in TestDataRowUnwrapper terms, and GetDeclaredRowType does the same through rowType.Name.EndsWith("[]") plus GetElementType(). Using rowType.IsSZArray (if the target frameworks allow it) or IsArray && GetArrayRank() == 1 would be clearer than matching on the name string.
Reflection and trimming:GetDeclaredRowType relies on an UnconditionalSuppressMessage(IL2070). The PR reports that the Native AOT publish succeeded, which is reassuring. Please make sure the new discovery-failure path does not call MakeGenericType on types the trimmer cannot see.
None of these block the PR. The regression fixtures, snapshots and AOT validation described in the PR are thorough, and the engine integration tests will need to pass in CI, since they were not run locally.
Review of #7571 (class type inference from [MethodDataSource])
I read the diff for the generator, TUnit.Core and engine changes. I did not read the snapshots or the tests in full, and I did not run anything. The approach is sound, and it keeps source-gen and reflection mode aligned, as AGENTS.md requires.
What looks good
InferClassTypesFromMethodDataSource now reuses InferTypesFromMethodDataSourceRowType instead of keeping a second, weaker resolver. That removes real duplication and gives members, properties, async sources and Arguments overloads one code path.
ProcessTypeForGenerics now returns a bool, so conflicting bindings reject inference instead of silently taking the last one. The same applies to ambiguous interface bindings. That is a clear correctness gain.
GenericClassInferencePolicy.ReportsUninferredMethodSource is shared by the generator and the engine, so the two modes decide the same way.
Suggestions
The failure message is duplicated. The string "Cannot infer generic class type arguments from method data source '…'" is written out separately in TestMetadataGenerator.cs and ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs. Put a GenericClassInferencePolicy.UninferredMethodSourceMessage(memberName) helper next to the policy. The wording can then not drift between modes, and the Engine integration expectations only have to match one string.
GetDeclaredRowType in MethodDataSourceAttribute.cs. The check rowType.Name.EndsWith("[]") is a string-based way to find single-dimension arrays. If the target framework rules out IsSZArray, a short comment saying why would help. A rowType.GetArrayRank() == 1 && rowType == elementType.MakeArrayType() check would also avoid depending on the name.
Allocation in ProcessTypeForGenerics.actualType.AllInterfaces is walked once per base-type candidate. Each call to MapMatchingType then compares OriginalDefinition. The cost is small and only paid at compile time, but you could skip the walk when namedParamType is not an interface or when the actual type has no matching definition. Low priority.
Setup in CollectConcreteInstantiations. The new hasAnyClassDataSource / classTypeArgumentsSupplied setup is hoisted out of the methodArgumentsAttributes.Count > 0 block. It runs for every generic class even when no method-level sources exist. Gate it with testMethod.IsGenericType, as the code already does, and consider computing it lazily.
None of these block the merge. I would do #1 and #2 before merging. The validation list (reflection, source-gen and AOT fixtures, plus snapshots) is thorough. The engine integration tests rely on CI.
I only partly reviewed this PR. I read the shared GenericClassInferencePolicy and the list of changed files. I did not read the engine and generator changes line by line, and I did not build or run anything. Please treat this as a light review.
What looks good
The inference decisions sit in one policy class that has no dependency on a type system. The reflection engine and the source generator both compile it, which matches the repo rule that both metadata-collection modes must behave the same.
The tests cover both modes: generator snapshots, _7224 and _7224Unsupported fixtures, engine integration tests and a Native AOT publish.
Sources that cannot infer types now report a discovery failure instead of disappearing, which is the better behaviour.
Suggestions
The policy is a set of tightly coupled boolean helpers: NullMethodRowInfersObject, ReportsUninferredMethodSource and ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments. Several take the same three or four flags. A small readonly struct of inference facts (has class-type source, has explicit class types, has inferred method types) would give the call sites named fields. They would then be less likely to swap positional bools by mistake. Unit tests that cover the policy table directly would help too, if they aren't already in MethodDataSourceDeclaredRowTypeTests.
Pair<T> and IsCompletePair encode the class-then-method ordering that constraint checking depends on. The ordering is documented only in a comment. A test that pins it would stop the two adapters from drifting apart.
The engine path now depends on reflection over method data sources (arrays, properties, fields, async sources). Please confirm that every new MakeGenericType or member-reflection call carries the right DynamicallyAccessedMembers or RequiresUnreferencedCode annotations. The AOT publish passed, but only for the 18 supported fixtures.
TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally, which is expected, so CI is the only check for the engine integration assertions. Please make sure that job is green before merging.
Follow-up e54da5f fixes both new blocking findings: wrapped reference-array rows infer class types from later parameters, and reflection reports member sources that cannot infer an unused class type parameter.
Validation on SDK 10.0.403:
Supported fixtures: 20/20 pass in generated and reflection modes.
Unsupported fixtures: exactly five expected discovery failures and one explicit-type pass in each mode.
Tests7224: both reviewed snapshots pass; Tests7106: one snapshot passes.
TypedRowInferenceParityTests: 30/30 pass, including generic-method conflicting tuple bindings and ambiguous interfaces in both declaration orders. Rejecting conflicting generic-method bindings is intentional and matches reflection.
Engine integration expectations updated for CI; TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally per repository instructions.
Disposition of nonblocking review suggestions: keeping the existing policy API and adapter-specific type inspection in this correctness patch; the scope argument is already required, and both-mode fixtures and parity tests pin the important behavior. Message centralization, a facts struct and compile-time scan optimizations are optional refactors, with no demonstrated incorrect behavior or performance regression. The latest light review has no blockers; CI and fresh Codex review must complete before promotion/merge. The new head remains draft, and a fresh Codex review has been requested.
Review of #7571 (infer generic class types from [MethodDataSource])
Scope of this review: I read GenericClassInferencePolicy.cs in full and the PR description and file list. I did not read the rest of the engine and generator diff line by line, so treat this as a design-level review. It is not a full correctness audit.
What looks good
The inference rules live in one shared policy (GenericClassInferencePolicy). It is compiled into the engine and every generator variant, with thin adapters on each side. That fits the rule that metadata collection must behave the same in source-generation and reflection modes, and it should limit drift between them.
Rows that can't be inferred now report a discovery failure, with guidance to use concrete row types or [GenerateGenericTest]. Before, they silently disappeared.
Test coverage is broad: source-generator snapshots, reflection and source-generated fixtures, unit tests for declared row types, and engine integration assertions. The description also reports a Native AOT publish check.
Suggestions
Boolean-heavy policy API.SelectRowFallback, ReportsUninferredMethodSource, NullMethodRowInfersObject and ClassRowSuppliesNoTypeArguments take 2–3 positional bool/int parameters. It is easy to swap two bool arguments at a call site and still compile. A small readonly struct (for example InferenceContext { HasClassTypeSource, HasExplicitClassTypes, HasInferredMethodTypes }) would make the call sites self-describing.
Direct policy tests. The policy is pure logic with a small truth table. A table-driven unit test for each method, especially ReportsUninferredMethodSource (the mixed inferred/untyped case) and IsCompletePair, would pin the behavior independently of the heavy snapshot tests. IsCompletePair returns true when either arity is 0. I'd like a test that shows this is intended.
Generic-arity handling in Pair<T>. It silently concatenates. The caller must check IsCompletePair first, and the type does not enforce that. Folding the check in, or returning null/TryPair on mismatch, would remove that ordering dependency.
Reflection performance. The reflection-mode inference runs during discovery. Please confirm that per-source results (declared row types and member lookups) are cached per class and method rather than recomputed for every instantiation. This matters for classes with several inferred instantiations. The AGENTS.md hot-path guidance applies here.
Engine integration tests.Issue7224Tests was not run locally, as the repo instructions require. Please check CI results for it before merging.
No blocking issues found in what I reviewed. The main gap is the part of the diff I didn't read in detail, which is the ReflectionTestDataCollector, TestMetadataGenerator and MethodDataSourceAttribute changes. Maintainers should look at those closely.
Fixed both current blocking findings in df2cf32; both inline threads now have commit-specific dispositions and are resolved.
Generated class inference spreads reference-tuple columns consistently with reflection, avoiding an extra tuple-typed class instantiation.
Generated constructor inference retains valid supplied optional bindings and falls back to explicit types when the speculative candidate fails constraints, matching reflection.
The original HEAD generator reproduces both reported failures (integer-to-tuple binding and string-to-integer constructor conversion): 58 pass, 2 fail. With the fixes, supported fixtures pass 58/58 in generated and reflection modes and in a freshly published macOS arm64 Native AOT executable. Full generator suite: 344 passed, one skipped; intentional Tests7224 snapshot updates reviewed. Engine integration expectations were updated for CI; TUnit.Engine.Tests was not run locally per AGENTS.md.
Claude's current nonblocking policy API/testing, Pair arity, and discovery caching suggestions are recorded in #7588, updated under its own lock. Existing warning debt remains tracked in existing issues.
The previous blocker run 41862723231 completed successfully. It no longer blocks this PR. GitHub head matches the pushed commit; no unresolved review threads remain at this check. Fresh hosted CI and reviewer verdicts are pending, so auto-merge remains unarmed.

Recorded analyzer normalization in #7587, MSBuild worker-exit evidence in #7468, and the distinct nested supplied-row partition reproduction in #7377 under their own locks; all those locks were released.
Run41862723231 completed successfully and no longer blocks this PR. Current-head review and CI remain pending; auto-merge is unarmed. The PR description now summarizes the final implementation and validation rather than accumulating review-round history.
Review of #7571 (generic class inference from [MethodDataSource])
I read the core runtime pieces (GenericClassRowPartition, GenericClassInferencePolicy). I did not read the whole 558KB diff and did not run any tests. The behaviour is clearly thought through, with good coverage across both modes plus an AOT check. I have a few design concerns, none blocking.
Concerns
Mutable inference state on shared attributes.ConfigureInferredSource sets FilterClassRows, SkipIfEmpty and InferredClassTypeArguments on MethodDataSourceAttribute. For other sources it records state in a static ConditionalWeakTable DeclaredRowTypes. A comment says generated code creates a fresh attribute per closed instantiation, but nothing enforces it. If an instance is ever shared between instantiations, the last writer wins and the bug would be hard to diagnose. Suggestion: carry the inference info in an immutable wrapper, as GenericClassRowPartitionDataSource already does for partitioning. Also, RowInfers checks the side-table before InferredClassTypeArguments, so precedence between the two mechanisms is implicit.
Parallel mechanisms for the same job. Declared inference lives in DeclaredRowTypes for non-method sources and in InferredClassTypeArguments for method sources, with partition fallback (GenericClassRowFallback) as a third path. Folding these into one "declared row inference" descriptor would make RowInfers and EvaluateAsync much easier to follow.
Operator precedence in EvaluateAsync.RowInfers(...) || x is MethodDataSourceAttribute {...} && MatchesOmittedOptionalConstructorRow(...) relies on && binding tighter than ||. It is correct, but add parentheses or extract a helper, since this is the heart of the feature.
Hand-rolled assignability in MatchesConstructorParameterType. It reimplements variance, base-type and interface walking to avoid MakeGenericType under AOT. That logic is subtle (direction flag, value-type boxing exceptions) and only reached via optional-constructor-row matching. Please confirm focused unit tests cover variance and nested generics, not just end-to-end fixtures. If a simpler rule is acceptable (exact generic-definition match plus argument equality), I would prefer it over partially re-implementing CLR assignability.
Session-end retention.DeferOnDisposeToSessionEnd(evaluationContext) keeps one evaluation context alive per build until session end, which accumulates for large parameterized suites. It matches reflection discovery (DependencyInjectionDataSourceAttribute scopes are never disposed: builder-context events never reach the test #7205), so probably fine, but the repo guidelines ask for before/after measurement on discovery hot paths and the description reports none.
Duplicated enums.GenericClassInferencePolicy.RowFallback mirrors the public GenericClassRowFallback. A small mapping test would keep them in sync.
Positives
The shared uninferable-source policy gives clear discovery failures instead of silently dropping tests.
Per-build evaluation keyed on the context accessor handles overlapping builds correctly, and cleanup is careful.
Snapshot and engine integration tests are in place (engine tests rely on CI, as required).
Overall this looks sound. Addressing 1-3 would meaningfully reduce maintenance risk in an already complex area.

This PR has 20 automated Claude review rounds and still has two blocking Codex findings on 3dd509b. The issue-pr-loop rework budget requires a split rather than another fix push.
Verified both findings against current code: singleton wrapper normalization checks IsTupleType only, missing System.Tuple<TestDataRow>; the scalar fallback lacks reflection's IsNullableTuple rejection. Both are assigned to #7597 with exact reproductions and dual-mode regression criteria. They are not dismissed or claimed fixed.
The repeated review edits center on TestMetadataGenerator.cs and ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs, with related runtime changes in GenericClassRowPartition.cs, MethodDataSourceAttribute.cs and DataSourceHelpers.cs. This is a review-round split; there are no recorded force-push conflict events. The parts explicitly separate runtime file ownership from discovery adapters and snapshots.
Claude's latest nonblocking concerns are dispositioned for the split: #7596 must assess mutable attribute/side-table state, unify its precedence where feasible, and make the EvaluateAsync grouping explicit. Its focused tests must retain nested generic/variance coverage; do not simplify assignability by dropping supported cases. Retention measurement and duplicated-policy enum mapping remain follow-up work in the existing inference-policy/caching issue #7588; no measured performance improvement is claimed. Existing correctness follow-ups remain linked in this PR description.
Closing this oversized PR without merging, retaining branch issue-7224-class-inference at 3dd509b for selective reuse. #7224 remains open until both children satisfy its acceptance criteria. No new code or validation claims in this unit; auto-merge stays unarmed.

Generic test classes now infer class type arguments from declared method-level
[MethodDataSource]rows in both source-generated and reflection discovery. Supported rows include tuples, wrapped reference arrays, fields/properties, asynchronous sources, external providers, inherited generic shapes and overloads selected byArguments.Sources that infer the same class types retain their rows. When no source supplies class types, uninferable method sources report discovery failures with guidance to declare concrete row types or use
[GenerateGenericTest]. The mixed inferred/untyped-source policy is shared between the metadata modes.Constructor-row matching preserves supplied optional values and retains omitted defaults for compatible explicit class types. Runtime partitioning filters incompatible supplied values and avoids duplicate rows when explicit and inferred types match. Bare singleton rows unwrap their
TestDataRowbefore binding a whole reference-tuple parameter; spread reference-tuple columns infer class types in both modes.Closes #7224
Validation on SDK 10.0.403:
_7224fixtures: 65/65 pass in generated and reflection modes, and in a fresh macOS arm64 Native AOT executable.TUnit.Engine.Testsremains CI-only per repository instructions.Nonblocking follow-ups: type-free class-row/source diagnostic combinations (#7390), excess non-collecting tuple validation and reflection rejection (#7463), distinct uninferable-source failure IDs (#7595), analyzer normalization (#7587/#7573), and inference-policy/caching refactoring (#7588). Additional nested supplied-constructor-row partition evidence is recorded in #7377. Existing AOT warning debt remains tracked in #7430/#7493 and their related issues.
