Problem

Truncated branch names in terminal output can be mistaken for file links, so clicking them may open a nonexistent path. Terminal paths should activate only when they exist in the thread’s environment.

Change

Validate terminal file and directory links against filesystem metadata before activating them. Quick clicks start validation immediately, while hover validation waits until the pointer has remained over a stable link. URL links keep their existing behavior.

Scope and approval

This is a focused fix for an obvious terminal link detection bug. Validation uses the existing filesystem metadata query and environment permission checks.

Verification

The focused terminal surface and drawer tests passed: 49 tests. check:changed passed, including format, lint, typecheck, tests, and React compiler checks.

- Require file or directory metadata before activating terminal paths
- Validate quick clicks and delay hover checks until links stabilize

Walkthrough

Terminal links now support asynchronous validation before activation and delayed hover reporting. The terminal drawer validates filesystem paths with permission checks and file metadata. The metadata hook provides a query builder, and tests cover link activation, path eligibility, and cancellation.

Changes: Terminal Link Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Terminal link validation and hover
apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/surface.ts, apps/web/src/terminal/ghostty/surface.test.ts
The terminal surface validates links asynchronously before activation and reports stable hover candidates after a delay. Pending activation and hover notifications are canceled when relevant pointer or surface state changes. Tests cover validation outcomes and cancellation.
File metadata query construction
apps/web/src/hooks/useFileMetadata.ts
The hook exports a query builder for absolute, non-network paths of up to 512 characters. It includes a thread ID only when the thread environment matches the requested environment.
Metadata-backed terminal paths
apps/web/src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.browser.test.tsx
The drawer checks permissions and file metadata before activating non-URL links. Browser tests cover URLs, malformed path-like text, pending and confirmed metadata, missing paths, hover changes, and working-directory changes.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 2d8fa95

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Terminal file links now activate only after filesystem metadata confirms a file or directory, with stale asynchronous interactions cancelled. Permission checks and network-path restrictions remain in place, limiting the change to link validation and interaction.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

Resolve terminal ~/ links before both metadata queries.

Both hover eligibility and click validation pass raw paths to getFileMetadataQueryAtom. A ~/project/file.ts link can therefore be checked against the server process home instead of the terminal cwd home and be rejected before activation. Use the existing resolvePathLinkTarget import at both call sites; its existing fallback behavior remains unchanged.

- Line 1048: Separate automatic selection cleanup from explicit link-activation
cancellation in the `clearSelection()` flow: do not increment
`linkActivationRequestId` when cleanup is triggered by output updates, so a
pending validation can still activate a link that remains in place. Preserve
cancellation for explicit user actions, and ensure the cleanup path can
distinguish those cases.
