Fixes#29062. When storage cleanup or git worktree remove deletes a thread's worktree folder, the thread details panel shows Initialize Git. Clicking it runs git init with the missing folder as cwd and fails:
VCS process failed in GitVcsDriver.initRepository: git (<worktree path>) exited with 128
Git status reports a missing cwd as isRepo: false, the same as an existing folder without .git, so the web client offers an action that can't succeed.
Change
Status gets an optional cwdExists field (local and combined status only). false means the folder is confirmed missing, true means it exists, and leaving it out means unknown, so older servers and clients behave exactly as before. isRepo stays false for a missing folder. The field is set in the core status path, the GitManager non-repo fallback, the GitWorkflowService early non-repo path, and the shared status merge.
If checking whether the folder exists fails, status returns an error. It never reports the folder as missing on a guess.
GitVcsDriver.initRepository checks that cwd exists before running Git. A missing folder now gets a clear VcsRepositoryDetectionError ("the workspace folder does not exist"), and no Git process runs.
Web: when cwdExists === false, the thread details panel shows a non-interactive "Workspace folder missing" row instead of Initialize Git, and the Diff panel shows the same text instead of "not a git repository".
What this PR leaves out:
Recreating the worktree. That would be a new action, and turn start already recreates a missing worktree.
Mobile. It has no Initialize Git button. It still says "not a repository" for this state (ThreadGitControls.tsx:50, gitSheetComponents.tsx:44). I have no iOS or Android emulator for before/after screenshots, so that can be a follow-up.
Scope and approval
This fixes the bug reported in #29062: a button that always fails. It adds no new workflow and changes no defaults. The new contract field is optional and additive.
Verification
Reproduced on main (0c4454c) with an isolated dev server and a scratch T3 home. I started a Replay (dev) thread in a managed worktree, then removed the folder with git worktree remove.
Screenshots captured at 2× resolution. Click an image to open the full-size PNG.
GitVcsDriver.test.ts: init refuses a missing folder, starts no Git process and creates no directory; init of an existing folder still works
GitWorkflowService.test.ts: the early fallback tells an existing folder from a missing one, for both local and combined status
GitManager.test.ts: the deleted-directory status includes cwdExists: false
packages/shared/src/git.test.ts: a remote update keeps cwdExists: false, and a later local update replaces it
All five touched test files pass in full (440 tests). vp run check:changed passes formatting, lint, knip and typecheck, and 460 tests pass. I could not run the web browser test project (DiffPanel.browser.test.tsx) locally because Playwright doesn't support Ubuntu 26.04 yet.
Not checked: the race where the folder is deleted between the existence check and git init. That case still fails as before.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Missing workspace folders now display a clear message instead of offering Initialize Git, with a matching server-side guard. The optional status field preserves existing behavior when folder existence is unknown, and the change adds no destructive operations.

Walkthrough
Status results now report whether the workspace exists. Git initialization rejects missing workspace paths. The Git UI shows “Workspace folder missing” when the path does not exist.

Explanation
The title "fix(git): deleted worktree folders no longer offer Initialize Git" matches the main change. The PR adds optional cwdExists status metadata, stops GitVcsDriver.initRepository from running git init on a missing folder, and changes the web panels to show "Workspace folder missing" instead of Initialize Git. The title is specific, follows conventional commit format, and is under the length guidance for a single sentence.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It includes Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section explains the failing Initialize Git action and gives the error output. The Change section lists the status field, the driver guard, and the web changes. Scope cites issue #29062 and explains why no new workflow is added. Verification lists focused tests, a reproduction on main, screenshots, browser checks, and what was not checked, including the mobile gap and the race condition. The description also names the model and harness used, as the template requests. The Scope section links the bug issue but does not include a maintainer approval comment, so the approval evidence is partly incomplete. The description is otherwise thorough.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area connects to the bug in #29062. Contracts: optional cwdExists on VcsStatusLocalShape is additive. Server: GitVcsDriverCore, GitVcsDriver (GitStatusDetails.cwdExists?), GitManager, and GitWorkflowService set or read cwdExists. GitVcsDriver.initRepository gains the existence guard, and its timeout and output limits are kept for existing folders. Shared: toLocalStatusPart forwards cwdExists when defined. Web: GitActionsControl.tsx and DiffPanel.tsx show the missing-folder state. Tests cover each of these changes. The reviewed diff shows no mobile, scratch-thread, or unrelated behavior changes. The mobile "not a repository" text is unchanged and is excluded by the PR description.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Direct issue #29062 has coding requirements. Met: (1) Initialize Git is no longer offered for a missing worktree folder. In apps/web/src/components/GitActionsControl.tsx, the new branch gitStatus?.cwdExists === false runs before the !isRepo branch and shows a non-interactive "Workspace folder missing" row. (2) vcs.init refuses a missing cwd. GitVcsDriver.initRepository checks the folder before running Git and returns VcsRepositoryDetectionError, so no Git process runs. (3) Status reports the missing state. The core status path, the GitManager fallback, the GitWorkflowService early path and the shared merge set cwdExists: false, and isRepo stays false. Unmet: the issue Expected behavior states that the panel "offers to recreate it from the thread's branch", and the Suggested fix names a recreate action for managed worktree paths that do not exist. The reviewed head adds no recreate action. The confirmed diff of GitActionsControl.tsx shows only a display row. The PR description excludes recreation as out of scope, and turn start recreates the worktree only when a user sends a message. That path is not a panel action. Mobile and scratch threads (#27626) are outside this requirement set.
Resolution
Add a recreate action to the missing-folder state for managed worktree threads. The action should recreate the worktree at the thread's worktreePath from the thread's branch, using the existing worktree creation path, and keep Initialize Git hidden in that state. If maintainers decide that recreation is not required for #29062, first change the issue Expected behavior and Suggested fix. Then re-run this assessment against the revised requirement.

a direct authenticated websocket vcs.init request for the missing folder returns VcsRepositoryDetectionError with "Cannot initialize Git because the workspace folder does not exist." the folder remains absent.
sending another real provider turn recreates the worktree on t3/read-readme-branch, reads the original README, and completes successfully. branch, publish, changes, and the real generated file diff work again. the recording shows another deletion/recovery cycle.
an existing non-git folder still offers Initialize Git. clicking it creates .git and restores the branch and publish controls.

native iOS/Android, the Electron shell, macOS/Windows, remote relay/tunnel connections, and other providers were not exercised on this linux web-client pass. the filesystem-inspection permission-error path and deletion between the existence check and git initialization were not forced. automatic-fetch-disabled cache staleness remains the existing limitation discussed above; this pass verifies fresh status reads and the normal refresh path, not a change to refresh policy.
