feat(web): redesign settings and setup surfaces - #28842
Part 4 of 6 of the T3 Code redesign. Settings and the setup surfaces (guided setup, publish, link dialogs, diagnostics) don't follow the new design.
settings open in a floating panel with scoped navigation. Text keeps main's sizes: 14px/500 titles, 12px muted descriptions, 16px/600 section headings.
shortcut rows defer offscreen editors, so long keybinding pages lay out only what is visible.
the system dialogs, guided setup, publish dialog, pull request linking dialog and diagnostics cards are aligned with the design. Every configured agent stays reachable during setup.
server: partial session scans search farther on refresh.
Needs approval: Theo for vite.config.ts (lint ceilings only); Theo or Julius for packages/contracts (agentSessions, clientRpcPermissions, environment, git, ipc, keybindings, orchestrationV2, relayClient, rpc, settings).
Stack
Do not merge: this stack still needs review. Each PR targets the one below it.
before: upstream/maria/redesign/3-panels-pages at 3d1fd131ac214bb395696acff3ac505d891d5e7c. after: upstream/maria/redesign/4-settings-setup at 1a474b2d01ea0baea1b09c0c5c9dc7a68bcea85d.
both revisions used the supplied database seed at 1280×720, with dark mode except the matching general settings light pair. runtime ports, timestamps, process ids, traces, and sidebar fixture counts vary.
general settings uses the redesigned settings shell, section layout, and controls.
keybindings uses the redesigned settings shell and shortcut rows.
providers uses the redesigned settings shell and provider controls.
appearance uses the redesigned settings shell and theme controls.
diagnostics uses the redesigned settings shell and telemetry layout.
guided setup presents redesigned connect and agent steps; the agent step now lists all configured providers in a scrollable area.
the recording shows connect → agents. navigation through projects was also exercised, but the projects transition is outside this recording.
the publish dialog uses the redesigned dialog layout for an actual local repository without a remote.
pull request linking uses the redesigned dialog layout and shows the entered pull request preview.
all 20 screenshots were inspected at full size; every uploaded image was reopened and rendered at 1280×720. the uploaded recording was watched through playback and seeking was verified.
unverified: native resource telemetry was unavailable on linux/x64 in both revisions; after reports that the resource monitor binary was not found. cpu and performance behavior were not verified. publish and pull request link submission were not performed. the pull request preview used fallback repository/number metadata, so title metadata is unverified. setup's after state shows the import-conversations page behind the modal. desktop, mobile, and remote connection modes were not exercised. no automated checks were run for this evidence-only pass.
both dev servers were stopped, the owned browser tab was closed, and both detached worktrees were removed. no code, commits, or pr content were changed.
Verification
Every layer, on its own and rebased on main fa31b66, passes CI's commands on Blacksmith: vp run knip:check, both GraphQL codegen checks, vp check, vp run typecheck, vp run --filter @t3tools/web test (unit and browser), and the Test job. Layer 6 also passes vp run --filter @t3tools/desktop test.
Done with Claude Code (Opus 5.5) and Codex (gpt-6.1-sol high) children in T3 Code.

The PR adds conversation scanning and import with streamed progress, updates CLI authorization and relay installation, and expands Git and worktree workflows. It also revises onboarding, settings, themes, diagnostics, and shared UI components.
Changes: Conversation import and onboarding
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Session scanning and import progress apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionScanner.ts, apps/server/src/project/AgentSessionImporter.ts, apps/server/src/ws.ts, packages/contracts/src/*, packages/client-runtime/src/*
Truncated scans increase their budgets on later scans. Agent-session imports gain a streaming RPC that reports processed counts and completes with imported and skipped totals. Permission enforcement, server capabilities, archived message counts, and client progress state are updated.
Welcome route and setup wizard apps/web/src/routes/welcome.tsx, apps/web/src/routes/__root.tsx, apps/web/src/components/onboarding/*, apps/web/src/onboarding/*
/welcome presents environment-scoped scans and conversation imports. The former first-run gate is removed, and a coordinator opens the setup wizard when its conditions are met.
Cloud authorization and relay installation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
CLI authorization and cancellation packages/shared/src/connectAuth.ts, apps/server/src/cloud/CliTokenManager.ts, apps/web/src/components/cloud/ConnectCliAuthSurface.tsx
Authorization requests can include a normalized device label and state-derived code. The browser offers explicit authorization and cancellation; matching loopback cancellation callbacks fail the pending authorization.
Relay installation progress and cancellation packages/shared/src/relayClient.ts, packages/contracts/src/relayClient.ts, apps/web/src/cloud/relayClientInstallDialog.ts, apps/web/src/cloud/linkEnvironment.ts, apps/web/src/components/cloud/RelayClientInstallDialog.tsx
Install progress carries downloaded-byte and checksum facts. The dialog displays grouped install stages and offers cancellation while allowed; installation races against the dialog’s cancellation signal.
Git and worktree workflows
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Branch, pull-request, and workspace selection apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, packages/contracts/src/git.ts, apps/web/src/components/BranchPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar*, apps/web/src/components/WorktreeBaseBranchPicker.tsx
Refs include commit timestamps. Pickers group local and remote refs, show selection and relative age, and include open pull requests and previous-worktree details in selection menus.
Commit, sync, and repository publishing apps/web/src/components/GitActionsControl*, apps/web/src/components/GitCommitDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/PublishRepositoryDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/PaneHeaderActions.tsx, packages/shared/src/keybindings.ts
Git controls add commit-and-push, pull, sync, and repository publishing. Commit selection moves to a dedicated dialog. Chat headers can render shortcut-mode Git controls, and mod+alt+p is added for commit-and-push.
Worktree setup and project automations apps/web/src/components/chat/WorktreeSetupCard.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadAutomationsPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/TimelineWorkGroupRows.tsx
Setup cards show elapsed time and setup details and can retry failed setup scripts. A project automation popover lists task status and timing and provides permission-gated Run now actions.
Settings and shared UI
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Settings layout and configuration apps/web/src/components/settings/*, apps/web/src/components/settings/scopedSettings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx
Settings sections track scope and availability. Project override counts and reset actions are added. Provider, model, storage, scheduled-task, keybinding, connection, and diagnostics settings receive updated controls and layouts.
Theme editing and shared components apps/web/src/components/settings/Theme*, apps/web/src/components/PageEmptyState.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ui/*, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/*
Theme import supports staged multiple files and conflict handling. Theme editing adds color inputs and validation. Shared dialogs, toasts, empty states, and controls gain new variants and layouts.
Setup can finish without opening the imported project, and retention edits can briefly apply a destructive cleanup value. Resolve these issues before merging.

Remove the real-module spread from the SettingsModelPicker mock.
SettingsModelPicker.tsx exports only SettingsModelPicker, so ...(await original()) adds nothing. It still loads the real module, together with chat/ProviderModelPicker and chat/TraitsPicker. Those can bring in heavy dependencies, and that defeats the purpose of the mock. The testing guideline says "vi.mock factories must not spread a real module that pulls in Shiki or the diff workers."
As per coding guidelines: "vi.mock factories must not spread a real module that pulls in Shiki or the diff workers."

This RPC handler owns the 250 ms reporting policy. Keep queue delivery here, but let the importer control when it reports progress. The server guidance says, “A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service's typed errors to the transport's error. Nothing else.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines and path instructions, transport handlers should only decode, call one service method, and map typed errors.

general settings uses the redesigned settings shell, section layout, and controls.
keybindings uses the redesigned settings shell and shortcut rows.
providers uses the redesigned settings shell and provider controls.
appearance uses the redesigned settings shell and theme controls.
diagnostics uses the redesigned settings shell and telemetry layout.
guided setup presents redesigned connect and agent steps; the agent step now lists all configured providers in a scrollable area.
the recording shows connect → agents. navigation through projects was also exercised, but the projects transition is outside this recording.
the publish dialog uses the redesigned dialog layout for an actual local repository without a remote.
pull request linking uses the redesigned dialog layout and shows the entered pull request preview.
all 20 screenshots were inspected at full size; every uploaded image was reopened and rendered at 1280×720. the uploaded recording was watched through playback and seeking was verified.
unverified: native resource telemetry was unavailable on linux/x64 in both revisions; after reports that the resource monitor binary was not found. cpu and performance behavior were not verified. publish and pull request link submission were not performed. the pull request preview used fallback repository/number metadata, so title metadata is unverified. setup's after state shows the import-conversations page behind the modal. desktop, mobile, and remote connection modes were not exercised. no automated checks were run for this evidence-only pass.
both dev servers were stopped, the owned browser tab was closed, and both detached worktrees were removed. no code, commits, or pr content were changed.

Every layer, on its own and rebased on main fa31b66, passes CI's commands on Blacksmith:
vp run knip:check, both GraphQL codegen checks,vp check,vp run typecheck,vp run --filter @t3tools/web test(unit and browser), and the Test job. Layer 6 also passesvp run --filter @t3tools/desktop test.Done with Claude Code (Opus 5.5) and Codex (gpt-6.1-sol high) children in T3 Code.
