fix(mobile): keep 注音 and other IME composition in the question answer field - #26787
On iOS 2.2.0, the "Or type a custom answer" field in a pending question breaks 注音 (Zhuyin) input. Pinyin and other marked-text IMEs are affected the same way. With the 繁體注音 keyboard, after the first key:
the candidate bar disappears and the punctuation row (,。?!、……) shows instead
the keys land as plain symbols (ㄋㄧㄒㄠ) with no marked-text underline, so no character can be picked
Backspace jumps between older states (ㄋㄧㄒ → ㄋ → empty → ㄋㄧ)
The field renders draft.customAnswer from the thread screen's draft atom. That value arrives after the keystroke, sometimes several keystrokes late. When iOS receives older text, it replaces the native text and its markedTextRange, which ends the composition.
After — fix at d34ba02c48:Watch the fixed app recording (41 seconds). Signed Release build on the iPhone 17 Pro simulator, iOS 26.5, using the native Traditional Chinese Zhuyin keyboard. The clip shows composing and committing 你好, selecting an option to clear the custom answer, composing 你好 again, and successfully submitting it to the scripted Replay provider. This is simulator evidence; the original clip is from client 2.2.0. The after recording is kept until deleted.
Change
This builds on the approach in #25996: the field keeps its text locally and reports every change to the draft. #25996 still adopts any parent value that differs from the local text, so an echo that is two keystrokes late (ㄋㄧ arriving while ㄋㄧˇ is being composed) still overwrites the composition. This PR also:
records the values this field sent, and skips a parent value that is one of them
clears that record once the parent catches up, or when it adopts an outside edit
passes a per-question reset counter from option selection through the draft to the answer field, so option taps clear local text even when the parent value is unchanged or matches a previously typed value
Production behavior changes only in QuestionAttachments; the PR also adds its regression tests and registers them in the mobile test configuration. No native code, contracts, or other clients change. If this lands, #25996 is covered.
Verification
Submission follow-up (d34ba02c48): the handler now reads the current answer-draft atom, seeds suggested answers, and validates current drafts and attachment state before dispatch. A retained-handler regression failed before the fix; it now verifies changed answers, blocking invalid latest drafts, and submitting a newly valid draft without rerendering. vp run check:changed 71e062aa9e passes with 53 tests across three focused files, plus format, lint, knip, and affected-package typechecks. The before/after section includes a fresh simulator recording from this commit; automated tests cover the stale-handler race without relying on UI timing.
Follow-up regression coverage first reproduced a missed reset with an unchanged empty parent value. The fix also handles an outside clear matching a previously typed empty string.
Rebuilt the signed Release app after the reset-counter fix and verified on the iPhone 17 Pro simulator: selecting an option clears active ㄋㄧˇ composition, subsequent composition commits 你, and another option tap clears the answer again.
Four regression tests pass, covering delayed Latin and 注音 draft echoes, external clears, and clears while echoes are pending. Against main, the two delayed-echo cases fail.
vp run check:changed 71e062aa9e passes for fix commit 1690aa944a (46 focused tests): format, lint, both knip checks, affected-package typechecks, and the focused regression tests.
Built and installed a signed, self-contained Release app from commit 2570d51cbe on an iPhone 17 Pro simulator running iOS 26.5 (Xcode 26.6). Tested against an isolated local backend using the free Replay provider's question scenario.
Tapped the native Traditional Chinese Zhuyin keyboard keys: ㄋ → ㄋㄧ → ㄋㄧˇ retained composition and offered candidates; selecting 你 committed the character. Continued with 你ㄏ → 你ㄏㄠ → 你ㄏㄠˇ, then selected 好 to produce 你好.
Selecting a predefined option cleared the custom answer. Retyped 你好, left and reopened the conversation, and confirmed the draft remained intact.
Submitted 你好; the app completed the scripted question, and the backend runtime request was resolved with the exact answer 你好.
Simulator testing uses real UIKit keyboard composition. Physical iPhone testing and other IMEs have not been verified. The focused regression tests exercise delayed parent echoes; the simulator pass does not inject artificial echo delays.
🤖 Implementation generated with Claude Code. Mac build, simulator verification, and follow-up cleanup performed by OpenAI Codex.
Japanese kana regression coverage
Commit 86a6956acc adds the reported 12-key kana sequence (ま → まつ → まっ → まって, late まつ echo, then 待って with a late まっ echo). All five answer-field tests pass on the PR implementation. Replacing only the component with the main baseline at b823dcf5c6 makes this case fail with Expected: "まって", Received: "まつ". vp run check:changed 9fb4503a84 passes format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, and the focused tests. Added and verified by OpenAI Codex.
This is automated regression coverage, not physical-device verification. The latest reported EAS Preview job was skipped; a native iPhone test on the updated head remains outstanding.
The custom answer field rendered the draft that returns through the thread screen. That echo can lag the text the input just reported, and iOS applies a controlled value paired with the current native event count. Replacing the field during Pinyin or another marked-text composition ends the composition, so basic IME input does not work.
Keep the field's text local and ignore parent values this field already reported. A parent value that was never typed here, such as an option tap clearing the answer, is still adopted.

Summary
Draft reset signal apps/mobile/src/state/use-selected-thread-requests.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/PendingUserInputCard.tsx
Draft answers include a reset version. Option selection increments it, custom-answer edits preserve it, and PendingUserInputCard passes it to QuestionAttachments.
Local answer text synchronization apps/mobile/src/features/threads/QuestionAttachments.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/QuestionAttachments.test.tsx, apps/mobile/vite.config.ts
QuestionAttachments stores input text locally and resets it when outsideChange changes. Tests cover delayed draft echoes, Zhuyin and Japanese composition, and external draft changes. The test file is included in the React test project.
Submission from refreshed drafts apps/mobile/src/state/use-selected-thread-requests.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/thread-task-permissions.test.ts
Submission reads the current draft, recalculates attachment readiness from configuration and upload state, and builds response answers from that draft. Tests cover blocked submission, blank answers, and submitting a later custom answer.

QuestionAttachments can keep newer local text after an older parent echo. However, onSubmitUserInput sends the render-time activePendingUserInputAnswers. If the user edits an existing answer and submits before the draft update renders, the field can show the new text while respondToUserInput sends the older answer.
Read userInputDraftsByRequestKeyAtom at submit time and build the answers from that snapshot.

Thanks for building on #25996, the delayed-echo case with IME composition is a good catch. Would it make sense to land #25996 first and rebase this on top as a follow-up?
thanks to hpware for the local draft, explicit option reset, and latest-draft submission fixes. i kept the original commits and merged current main with a merge commit, no rebase.
update at 94e85a41b8: main landed #30744, which made the answer field uncontrolled (defaultValue plus clear()) to keep iOS autocorrect. that also keeps IME composition, so the merge keeps main's uncontrolled input and drops this pr's local text state. this pr's option reset counter now drives the clear(), replacing main's props.value === "" check, which missed an option tap while the draft echo was still "". QuestionAttachments.test.tsx now models the uncontrolled input; the 注音, kana, delayed-echo, and outside-reset cases are unchanged. latest-draft submission is unchanged.
verification: blacksmith vp run check:changed against main passed format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), 12 focused tests, and compiler coverage. the earlier coderabbit option-reset thread is resolved.
unverified: native ios/android composition, option reset, and submission on this head. this linux vm has no device access, and chrome cannot reproduce native marked-text composition.
no changed behavior could be exercised on this linux boat vm. i inspected the description, discussion, reviews, commit authors, and six-file diff at 9fb4503a84a814c8d69cff5e56b11aefef779cb9. the pr is open. all 29 reported checks pass; this is not runtime proof.
the production changes are native-mobile-only: local question-answer text, explicit option-selection resets, and submission from the latest draft and attachment state. the user path is a provider question in a mobile thread, then native custom-answer entry, option selection, and submission.

main reproduction, native zhuyin/pinyin composition and candidate selection, backspace behavior, option selection clearing composition, draft retention across navigation, latest-answer submission to codex gpt-6.1-sol, and attachment/permission neighbors remain unverified. no before/after captures or interaction recording were produced because no native client was available. no dev server or provider turn was started: the web client does not render the changed native components and cannot prove this fix.
the repository mobile verification skill requires stopping verification when device access is unavailable. this pass made no source changes, commits, or pushes. fresh verification requires a device-enabled environment, reproducing on main first and repeating the same native flow on this exact head with a real provider question. the contributor recordings were not reproduced in this pass.
[claude] The same bug shows up with the Japanese 12-key kana keyboard on a physical iPhone, in the "Or type a custom answer" field of a pending question.
While typing, each kana is committed as soon as the next key lands, so the candidate bar never shows the whole reading. The 12-key modifier key (゛゜小) then has no composed kana to modify and inserts its fallback ^_^ emoticon instead, giving text like まつ^_^ている for まっている.
I added a kana case to this PR's QuestionAttachments.test.tsx. It passes on 9fb4503a8 and fails with main's QuestionAttachments.tsx (Expected: "まって", Received: "まつ"), alongside the two existing delayed-echo cases.
it("keeps a Japanese kana composition when a late echo arrives mid-composition",()=>{render("");type("ま");type("まつ");// The 12-key kana keyboard's modifier key turns the composed つ into っ.type("まっ");type("まって");render("まつ");expect(input().value).toBe("まって");type("待って");render("まっ");expect(input().value).toBe("待って");});
Command: vp test run --project react src/features/threads/QuestionAttachments.test.tsx in apps/mobile (Node 26.12.1, pnpm 12.9.0, Linux).
Not verified: a native build of this PR's head on the iPhone. I can run the same kana flow on the device if an EAS preview build of this PR is available.
