feat: sign in to GitHub through the T3 Code for GitHub app [internal testing only] - #26245
GitHub requests from T3 Code share the user's personal 5,000/hr API limit with everything else they run, so busy days stall PR status and reviews. A GitHub App owned by an Enterprise Cloud org gets a higher per-user limit, so this adds an optional way to sign in through the T3 Code for GitHub app.
How it works
Sign in with GitHub sits in Settings → Source Control → GitHub (when enabled), next to saved tokens, GH_TOKEN and the gh login. The order is: saved token, then the app sign-in, then GH_TOKEN, then gh. Nothing changes for anyone who doesn't sign in.
The server runs GitHub's device flow with the app's public client ID. There is no client secret and no private key in the code. Clients only show the code (sourceControl.signInStart / signInWait / signInCancel), so it works over remote, relay and tunnel, and on a phone that leaves the app to approve.
The session is a secret setting (signIns) next to the saved tokens, so it uses the same secret store and redaction. Tokens refresh 5 minutes before they expire, and concurrent requests share one refresh. If GitHub rejects the refresh token, the server signs out and falls back to GH_TOKEN/gh. Sign out clears the setting.
Credentials are chosen per request in GitHubRequestPolicy: a saved token, then the app, then GH_TOKEN/gh. When the app token gets not found or "not accessible by integration" (REST 404/403, GraphQL NOT_FOUND/FORBIDDEN), the request is asked once more with the user's own credential, so repositories the app isn't installed on keep working. Work pinned to one credential (routing, stack pushes) picks one that reaches its repository up front.
GitHubAppAccess reads the app's installations and signed-in login through GitHubRest with the app credential pinned, so they share the quota, pause and concurrency of every other GitHub request.
Nudges, only for servers signed in with the app: the PR view (web, desktop, mobile) shows a notice when the app can't reach the repo, and cloning or publishing a project to such a repo offers "Give T3 Code for GitHub access" (sourceControl.appAccess).
github.com only. Enterprise hosts keep using tokens or gh. Agents get no sign-in tool, because approving needs a person in a browser.

Verification
A real sign-in completed end to end against the live app (App ID 5503720) on a dev server. The PR view of a repo the app isn't installed on loaded through the gh fallback.
New tests in GitHubAppSignIn.test.ts cover: the device flow (pending, slow down, success, denied, expired, unsupported host); refresh (shared, after a rejected token, refresh token rejected, network failure); credential order; credential choice by installation coverage; and repo detection from repository and from a checkout's remote. Also added: tests for the remote parsing behind the clone toast.
vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck of 32 packages, tests).
Mobile typechecks, but its rows, alerts and notice weren't checked on a device.
Notes for review
scopeMethodsToRepository (GitHubRequestPolicy.ts) wraps the GitHub providers' methods so each call runs in its repository's scope. It is generic, so one Effect diagnostic is suppressed on the line that forwards each method's effect. The typed alternative is wrapping about 35 methods by hand.
Not done: the app token currently gets 5,000/hr from GitHub. The higher limit has to be applied to App ID 5503720 on GitHub's side; no code change is needed when it is.

When a repository is requested using a URL, host/owner/name, or owner/name.git, the scope stores that selector verbatim, so GitHubAppSignIn.access fails to match an installed repository and GitHubCredentials.get falls back to GH_TOKEN/gh instead of the app credential. Normalize repository to canonical lower-case owner/name before storing it in the scope.

Remove the higher-rate-limit promise until it applies.
The PR states that this app currently receives 5,000 requests per hour. GitHub documents 5,000 requests per hour as the ordinary authenticated-user limit, so sign-in does not currently provide the promised increase. Correct this paragraph and the matching claims in SourceControlAppSignInSettings.tsx and SourceControlSignInSection.tsx. (docs.github.com)

GitHub requests from T3 Code share the user's personal 5,000/hr API limit
with everything else they run. Signing in through a GitHub App owned by an
Enterprise Cloud org gets per-user tokens with a higher limit.
Adds an optional "Sign in with GitHub" credential next to saved tokens,
GH_TOKEN and the gh login. The server runs GitHub's device flow with the
app's public client ID, keeps the session as a secret setting, and
refreshes it before expiry. The app token is used only for repositories an
installation covers; others fall back to the user's own credential. PR
views and new clones suggest installing the app where it is missing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- A 401 on a token or gh login no longer marks the app session refused;
only the token GitHub rejected is refreshed.
- A refresh only saves over the session it started from, so a sign-out
or new sign-in during the request is not undone.
- Cancel ends the server's sign-in attempt (sourceControl.signInCancel),
so approving the code afterwards signs nothing in.
- Installations are paged in full, and a repository list past the page
cap counts its account as reached instead of nagging.
- Repositories named as URLs or host/owner/name match coverage.
- Mobile no longer alerts for a sign-in it cancelled or replaced.
- Publishing a new repository suggests installing the app, as cloning does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- A refresh that fails ahead of expiry keeps using the still-valid token.
- Only bad_refresh_token signs out; other refresh errors keep the session.
- A failed installations read is cached for 30 seconds instead of retried
on every request.
- Screen readers announce the device code.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The app's higher rate limit is not in place yet, so the sign-in ships
off. The server reads the app's client ID from T3CODE_GITHUB_APP_CLIENT_ID;
unset, it uses no app tokens (a saved session is kept but ignored), refuses
to start a sign-in, and reports every repository as signed out, so no
notice or toast appears. Discovery marks GitHub with `appSignIn` only when
the variable is set, and web and mobile show the sign-in only then.
Error messages and the user guide go back to not mentioning the sign-in.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
GitHub retires the old token pair on refresh, so falling back to it after
a failed save served a dead token. Retry the save briefly, then keep using
the new token unsaved.

Batched reads (PR stats, cross-repository listings) ran with no repository
scope, so they always used the app token and dropped rows for private
repositories without an installation. The scope now lists every
repository a call names, and the app is used only if it reaches all of
them.
The desktop app also passes T3CODE_GITHUB_APP_CLIENT_ID from the login
shell to its server, and into WSL on Windows, so testers can enable the
sign-in with one export.

An expired app session whose refresh failed made every GitHub request
fail, even with GH_TOKEN or a gh login available. Use those instead and
keep the session; fail only when no other credential exists.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fall back to the user credential when an expired app token cannot be refreshed.
GitHubCredentials.get does not catch the GitHubAppSessionError from appSignIn.token(host). The error reaches the caller before GH_TOKEN or gh is consulted. This happens only when the app token is expired or was refused and the refresh request fails with a transient error, such as a network failure or a GitHub response without an access token. A refused refresh token (bad_refresh_token) already falls back correctly, and a still-valid token is served when a refresh ahead of expiry fails.
The fix keeps the saved app session. token does not clear the session on a transient refresh failure, so a later request can retry the refresh.

Do not select one user credential for a mixed-access batch.
If the app reaches a private repository but not another repository in the batch, reachesAll becomes false and the whole batch uses the user credential. When that credential belongs to a different account, it may not reach the private repository; batched search or stats results can then omit it. Partition requests by credential, or perform repository-specific requests before combining results. The current batch test checks only the selected credential source. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

GitHubAppSignIn made its own REST calls (/user, /user/installations) past
the quota, pause and concurrency every other GitHub request shares, and
each call site had to name its repository so credentials could be picked
per repository, which kept missing cases.
- GitHubAppSignIn is OAuth and the stored session only; its one raw HTTP is
the github.com/login device and refresh grants.
- GitHubRequestPolicy picks the credential (saved token, app, then GH_TOKEN
or gh) and asks once more with the user's own credential when the app
token gets not found or "not accessible by integration" (GraphQL
NOT_FOUND/FORBIDDEN included). This replaces the per-call repository scope.
- GitHubAppAccess sits above GitHubRest: installation coverage and the
signed-in login go through it with the app credential pinned, and pinned
work (routing, stack pushes) picks a credential that reaches its repo.
- GitHubCredentials is back to personal credentials only.

credentialFor treated a failed installations read as covered, so pinned
work (routing, stack pushes) could hold an app token that cannot reach the
repository and cannot hand it on. Only confirmed coverage keeps the app;
otherwise use the user's credential when there is one. The UI still reads

Merges upstream `pingdotgg/t3code` `fe219c4de1` (95 commits, base
`49a9e80e0b`) into the fork. Branched from `main`; no open merge PR to
stack on.
## Resolution
15 conflicts, each resolved by the verdict `preflight.mjs` printed for
it. The full record is in `docs/fork/upstream-merge-log.md`
(2026-10-29). The main points:
- **`LegacySidebar.tsx` deleted upstream** (pingdotgg#21039). The deletion is
taken. Its fork deltas (touch long-press, Add project gate) already live
in `Sidebar.tsx` / `SidebarThreadRow.tsx`. The file's paths are removed
from three inventory entries, and the helper only it used is dropped
from `Sidebar.logic.ts`.
- **Composer access mode.** Upstream's simpler composer (pingdotgg#25869) shows
the Access control in three places: the Permissions chip, the
compact-menu section, and the effort-menu section in
`ComposerControlsBar.tsx`. All three are gated on `FEATURES.accessMode`.
`ComposerControlsBar.tsx` is added to `chat-composer-gates`.
- **Sidebar.** Upstream's boring-sidebar project folders are combined
with the fork's browse/closed/subtask filter. Upstream moved the row's
meta line into a `metaLine` variable, and the fork's owner name and
parent/child task links now live inside it.
- **Settings.** The boring-sidebar Labs rows are client settings and are
not gated. Simlock hosts join the `serverBehaviorSettings` rows, and the
`simlock-hosts` search id is mapped to that flag. The new Fallback model
row is hidden together with the default model row
(`defaultModelSetting`).
- **`AGENTS.md`.** Upstream now has agents check user-visible changes in
a real client without asking first. The fork's version says the same,
still pointing at the fork's skills.
- `agentContextBudget.json` uses upstream's numbers, plus the fork's 108
bytes for `ProjectScript.port`. The value `46015` was measured by
running the budget test.
- `pnpm-lock.yaml` was re-derived from upstream's copy.
**Merge stats:** 595 files landed vs 593 in the upstream range (the gap
is explained in the tracker entry). Fork delta: 766 files, unchanged.
## Verification
`verify.mjs` was run in full. These checks pass: duplicate-adds,
tripwires, resolution-check, unsupported-methods, lockfile, fmt, lint,
typecheck, build. In the test step, `web` and `client-runtime` pass. The
same failures as the 2026-10-27 and 2026-10-28 merges remain, each
confirmed failing alone:
- `t3`: `RepositoryIdentityResolver`, `GitVcsDriver`,
`CodexChatGptAuth`, `CodexManagedRuntime` (the known `/tmp` sticky-bit
gap)
- `provider-opencode`: `OpenCodeServerLedger`
## Usable as-is
- Boring sidebar project folders, two-line folder rows, and hiding empty
projects (pingdotgg#21039, pingdotgg#26387, pingdotgg#26391, pingdotgg#26463)
- Simpler composer with grouped controls and effort words (pingdotgg#25869). The
access-mode parts stay gated.
- Pending approvals on their timeline row (pingdotgg#26255); tool call diffs open
in the diff panel (pingdotgg#26304); compaction row timer (3ef1610)
- Many web fixes: chat tables, inline code double-click, numbered
composer lists, image chips, scroll-to-end, tool groups after a
usage-limit pause, long-thread timeline perf (pingdotgg#26727)
- New Claude threads default to Opus 5.5 (pingdotgg#26358)
- PR files: mark viewed with shift-click, and the diff follows the file
tree (pingdotgg#26349, pingdotgg#26730). These are reachable only where the PR surface is
(`pullRequestSurface`).
## Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- **GitHub sign-in through the T3 Code for GitHub app** (pingdotgg#26245):
`sourceControl.signInStart`, `signInWait`, `signInCancel`, `appAccess`.
New `UnsupportedMethodError` entries.
- **Simlock device pools** (pingdotgg#25259, pingdotgg#26706): `device.simlockIdentity`
(new union entry) and the `simlockDeviceHostsEnabled` server setting.
Part of the device hub gap.
- **Fallback model when the default provider is out of usage** (pingdotgg#26164):
the `fallbackModelSelection` server setting cannot be saved, because
`server.updateSettings` is refused. The row is hidden.
- Managing GitHub maintainer edits (pingdotgg#25588): in the pull-request write
family Moatless does not dispatch.
- T3 Connect tunnel usage and T3 Chat account push (pingdotgg#26369, pingdotgg#25931):
relay/cloud, decided out.
- Mobile dynamic workflows in the Agents sheet (pingdotgg#18642) and the mobile
app fixes: mobile against Moatless is unverified.
## Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
These are listed under _Runtime fixes upstream made to its own server_
in `docs/fork/gaps.md`:
- Falling back to another provider when the default is out of usage
(pingdotgg#26164), and refreshing usage when a turn hits its limit (pingdotgg#26234); no
replay of stale Codex usage limits (pingdotgg#26331)
- Settling a thread at once when its watched PR merges (pingdotgg#26395).
Moatless reads no PR for settlement today, so this is a decision rather
than a fix.
- Loading long thread history in bounded pages (pingdotgg#26240); publishing
local git status before the remote lookup (pingdotgg#21046); releasing completed
PR sweep data (pingdotgg#25177)
- Thread links that outside MCP clients can open (pingdotgg#26642); listing
snoozed threads across projects in one MCP call (pingdotgg#26442)
- Provider approval and subagent fixes: Claude command approvals
(pingdotgg#20145), ACP ID-only approvals (pingdotgg#26647), Cursor subagents (pingdotgg#26592),
OpenCode subagent runtime mode (pingdotgg#26302), Codex shadow-home locks
(c4606e5); shorter remote reconnect and command delays (pingdotgg#25754)
## After merging
- Disable the new upstream workflow: `gh workflow disable
mobile-fingerprint-label.yml --repo soaplabs/t3code`

GitHub requests from T3 Code share the user's personal 5,000/hr API limit with everything else they run, so busy days stall PR status and reviews. A GitHub App owned by an Enterprise Cloud org gets a higher per-user limit, so this adds an optional way to sign in through the T3 Code for GitHub app.
How it works
GH_TOKENand theghlogin. The order is: saved token, then the app sign-in, thenGH_TOKEN, thengh. Nothing changes for anyone who doesn't sign in.sourceControl.signInStart/signInWait/signInCancel), so it works over remote, relay and tunnel, and on a phone that leaves the app to approve.signIns) next to the saved tokens, so it uses the same secret store and redaction. Tokens refresh 5 minutes before they expire, and concurrent requests share one refresh. If GitHub rejects the refresh token, the server signs out and falls back toGH_TOKEN/gh. Sign out clears the setting.GitHubRequestPolicy: a saved token, then the app, thenGH_TOKEN/gh. When the app token gets not found or "not accessible by integration" (REST 404/403, GraphQLNOT_FOUND/FORBIDDEN), the request is asked once more with the user's own credential, so repositories the app isn't installed on keep working. Work pinned to one credential (routing, stack pushes) picks one that reaches its repository up front.GitHubAppAccessreads the app's installations and signed-in login throughGitHubRestwith the app credential pinned, so they share the quota, pause and concurrency of every other GitHub request.sourceControl.appAccess).gh. Agents get no sign-in tool, because approving needs a person in a browser.Screenshots

scopeMethodsToRepository(GitHubRequestPolicy.ts) wraps the GitHub providers' methods so each call runs in its repository's scope. It is generic, so one Effect diagnostic is suppressed on the line that forwards each method's effect. The typed alternative is wrapping about 35 methods by hand.Built with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, driven from T3 Code.
