fix(server): turn diffs follow branch switches - #23299
juliusmarminge wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
…witched to After a turn checked out another branch, its diff compared against the previous checkpoint, so the left branch's work showed as deletions and edits to shared files showed the old branch's content as the removed side. Each checkpoint now records where HEAD's reflog ended. The next capture reads only the entries after that cursor, and for each `checkout: moving from` entry takes the files the switch changed from the branch it landed on. That baseline becomes the checkpoint's second parent, and the adjacent turn diff starts there. Resets, rebases, merges and branch renames are not checkouts, so their changes stay in the diff. A rewritten or missing reflog leaves no baseline. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This fixes branch-switch diff baselines, but it adds a substantial reflog parser and multi-parent checkpoint reconstruction path in the shared server VCS driver. The production behavior and stateful Git interactions warrant human review despite the focused scope and added tests. Notes:

For
body.groups[].members[].tags,lookupflattens thetagsarrays because the remaining path containsmembers[]. Thetagssegment has no[], so its array must remain a leaf value. The current result exposes individual tags tomatchesWebhookFilter, allowing a scalar filter to match a tag that the path did not select.Change the resolver to flatten only arrays produced by wildcard traversal. Do not use the presence of any wildcard in the remaining path as a proxy for that result.

The webhook findings refer to the superseded integration head ce07f0babe. The branch was rebuilt against verified main. Current head 26511d7c40 changes exactly five checkpoint/VCS files; the webhook, contract and MCP changes are absent from this PR. Both isolated final reviewers approved that scope. Focused tests on the current head passed 23/23. |

CI on 26511d7c40 reports failures in run 39714623085: all eight server shards, Build and Typecheck, and the aggregate Test check. Local focused tests passed 23/23; CI failure causes remain unverified. GitCafe exposes check metadata but returns no CI runs for this head. Its typed view command rejects numeric provider IDs; the run and job-log API endpoints return HTTP 400 (request IDs |
Problem
When an agent commits changes on branch A and switches to branch B in the next turn, that turn’s diff includes A-only files as deletions. Files edited on both branches also use A’s contents as the old side instead of B’s starting contents.
Change
Record a validated HEAD reflog cursor with checkpoints. When a turn checks out a different commit, construct its starting tree with the checkout changes applied and retain that baseline as a checkpoint parent. Patch and line-count queries use it only when it belongs to the requested preceding checkpoint. Resets remain visible; older checkpoints or unavailable reflogs retain the existing fallback.
Scope and approval
Fixes https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/8204
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow: #8204. The change stays in shared server checkpoint capture and diff calculation; web, desktop and mobile consume the same result.
Verification
expected Set{ b.txt, a.txt } to deeply equal Set{ b.txt }.26511d7c40also passed: 23/23 tests across 2 files.shared.txt +1/-1;getTurnDiff(1→2, ignoreWhitespace=false)returned-base/+B edit. Noa.txtappears in the summary or patch. Actual RPC transcript and checkpoint provenance, actual patch.Evidence
These are separate reproduction fixtures, not a matched pixel-comparison pair. The original fixture uses a.txt/b.txt; the candidate adds a shared-file edit to check the old hunk contents and counts too.
Candidate recording: provider turn completion → summary → Open diff → shared-file hunk. Recording began at 02:54:56 UTC; dispatch at 02:55:06; C2 ready at 02:55:36; recording ended at 02:59:08. Rendering environment, fixture commands and provenance: Linux, T3 preview, light appearance, reported CSS viewport 1440×900; saved screenshot raster 1280×800.
The runtime capture is from the earlier integration head ce07f0b. The final head 26511d7c40 removes an unrelated integration commit; the five checkpoint-fix files are identical. It is not a fresh final-head capture.
Unverified: matching baseline interaction recording, zero/threshold pixel diffs, final-head browser capture, pure-switch empty review, remaining compatibility fixture matrix, Electron, native iOS and Android. Infrastructure stalls prevented the complete capture set; the proof audit does not certify it as complete. No claim of historical checkpoint repair or changed nonadjacent whole-thread diffs.
