fix(server): banked Claude resets are read at most every ten minutes per account - #19474
AdEx-Partners-DE wants to merge 13 commits into
Conversation
…per account Every Claude provider check called api.anthropic.com/api/oauth/usage to read the banked resets, about once a minute per account. Measured on a nightly with two Claude accounts: 85 requests in 41 minutes, 55 of them answered 429. The refused reads also crowd out other apps on the same accounts. The driver now reads through a small throttle: at most one request per account every ten minutes, keeping the last answer in between. Each refused read in a row doubles the wait, up to an hour; an answer resets it. Redeeming a reset forgets the cached count, so the re-probe after it asks again. ApprovabilityVerdict: Would Approve Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped, tested fix that throttles existing Claude reset-credit polling without changing schemas, deployment, or user capabilities. An unresolved High-severity correctness issue remains: successful ineligible responses can be mistaken for failed reads, leaving stale credit data and incorrect backoff state. Not approved because:

Account identity and reset-credit fetching apps/server/src/provider/claudeResetCredits.ts, apps/server/src/provider/claudeResetCredits.test.ts |
The module fetches raw usage data, derives an account key from account details and credentials, and checks the expected key before submitting a claim. Fetch failures now use ClaudeResetCreditReadError. |
Per-account read and redemption coordination apps/server/src/provider/resetCreditCoordinator.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderInstanceRegistry.test.ts |
The coordinator serializes reads and claims per account. It caches credit data, applies retry timing, tracks pending grants, and updates cached credits around claims. Tests cover timing, account changes, shared reads, expiration, concurrency, and retries. |
Provider account checks and redemption apps/server/src/provider/Drivers/ClaudeDriver.ts |
The provider rechecks account identity around reads, clears cached capabilities when the account changes, and redeems through the account-keyed coordinator. |

Merge Risk:
Minimal · up to 8f942
-
Claude reset-credit reads and redemptions are now serialized per account, so a status check overlapping a redemption cannot restore the pre-redemption credit count. No outstanding merge-blocking issues were identified in the reviewed changes. Real-account and desktop verification were not performed, as the PR states.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 3b8c7
-
Account identity checks and serialized retries limit exposure around credit redemption. No introduced security weakness was established in the inspected paths, but guarantees across restarts and multiple server processes remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The changed shared-state scope is the set of provider instances resolving to the same Claude account key within one coordinator. Distinct derived keys receive separate locks and state. No new network destination or cross-provider grant reuse was identified in the inspected paths.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The inspected Claude redemption RPC selects a configured provider instance by instanceId and requires provider-management scope. Its caller does not supply the OAuth token, grant ID, or claim destination. The alternative source/account/credit payload is dispatched to a separate usage-source path.
- observed — Before issuing the authenticated claim, the consumer validates grant and request identifiers, rereads credentials and account configuration, requires an organization, and rejects a mismatch with the driver's expected account key. This adds identity continuity checking compared with the base path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Claude redemption protects bookkeeping with an uninterruptible transition while allowing the provider operation to be interrupted. Uncertain failures retain both grant and idempotency key; settled failures clear pending ownership and restore the prior cache. Confirmed outcomes leave that cache invalidated, preventing an earlier shared response from remaining authoritative after success.

Full details: Title check
-
Explanation
The title names the main change: Claude banked reset reads are throttled to at most one every ten minutes per account. The raw summary and objectives confirm the change rebuilds Claude reset-credit polling around the account coordinator with a ten-minute read interval. The title uses the conventional commit format and is specific. The changeset also covers backoff, credential handling, and redemption locking, but the title does not need to list them.
Full details: Description check
-
Explanation
The description follows the template sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification). The Problem section is covered in the opening paragraph. The Change section explains the coordinator sharing, backoff, and credential handling. Scope and approval links the takeover comment and states that the work is a focused takeover of an existing bug. Verification lists specific suites, counts, typecheck, lint, and review rounds, and it states what was not checked. The description is long and dense, and some lines are hard to parse, but every required section is filled in with relevant content.

… reads across a redeem Review findings on the throttle: - A successful answer without resets came back as undefined, like a refused request, so the reader kept the old count and doubled the wait. fetchClaudeResetCredits now reports a refused or failed request as an error; readClaudeResetCredits keeps its old behaviour on top of it. The reader treats only an error as a refusal; any answer replaces the count. - Reads run one at a time, so two checks cannot send two requests. - forget starts a new generation: a read still running across a redeem does not store its older count. The driver also forgets right before the re-probe after a redeem, since a check during the redeem may have read the count from before it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…and a redeem drops reads in flight Review of the upstream PR (pingdotgg#19474) found that a successful answer without resets read like a refused request, so the old count stayed and the wait doubled. The read now reports a refusal as an error; an answer, empty or not, replaces the count. Reads run one at a time, and forget starts a new generation, so a read still running across a redeem does not store its older count; the driver forgets again right before the re-probe. Taking over this one. I will rebuild the polling throttle against current main and verify account-change invalidation, shared-account coordination and redemption races. I will keep the change focused on existing reset-credit behavior, preserve your commits, and push the rebuilt fix here. The maintainer takeover covers this focused bug-fix scope; it does not authorize merging. |

Note Written by updated the original branch, preserving @AdEx-Partners-DE's commits and the existing maintainer rebuild. merged current main and resolved the conflicts while keeping main's auth invalidation and capabilities-cache behavior. also fixed one retry race: an account mismatch or unreadable login could discard an earlier unconfirmed claim's idempotency key. login failures now preserve the pending grant/request pair; only explicit cooldown or rate-limit replies settle a failed claim. the new regression reproduced different request ids before the fix and passes afterward. no new test files, client fields, or ui changes. verification at
unverified: a live anthropic account, real client, macos keychain, windows and mobile/desktop runtime. this changes server polling and redemption only, so screenshots do not apply. the cache remains process-local; older logins without stable account/organization identity use the existing documented credential-fingerprint fallback. ci: all 28 checks passed on this head; git.cafe reports mergeable. the latest bot review reports no actionable comments. no remaining blocker from this pass; ready for maria's review. |
Claude provider checks repeatedly fetched banked resets, and a failed usage read erased the last known count. Multiple instances using one account each made their own requests.
Reset reads now share the existing account coordinator. Known Claude account and organization identities get one regular read per ten minutes across instances, including separate homes and OAuth token rotation. Queued reads recheck credentials after acquiring the account lock. Failed reads preserve the last response and back off to 20, 40, then at most 60 minutes; successful empty or ineligible responses clear it. Canceled reads keep a conservative ten-minute polling budget. Cached grants still expire on time. Credential changes invalidate instance capabilities and select a different cache; missing or malformed credentials expose no cached credits. Reads and redemption share a lock, with post-redemption refresh after releasing it. Unconfirmed redemption retries retain their original grant and idempotency key, with the last successful count available if the next read fails.
This is a focused maintainer takeover of the existing polling bug, authorized in the takeover comment. Contributor commits are preserved, with main merged. The original per-instance generic reader and helper tests were replaced with account coordination and observable driver tests. No new wire fields or client behavior were added.
Verification at 3b8c74f4fa:
The budget lasts for one server process. Older login files without a stable account and organization identity use a config-directory and credential-fingerprint key, so cross-home sharing and token-rotation continuity cannot be guaranteed for them. Existing macOS Keychain-only credential support is unchanged. No real Anthropic account, running client, relay/tunnel, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android or Electron desktop was verified. Web, desktop and mobile consume the unchanged server snapshot contract.
