feat(web): copy chat tables as tab-separated text from the table menu - #17903
You can't paste a table from an agent response into Slack. Slack messages have no Markdown table syntax, and a CSV snippet shows up as a cut-off monospace preview. Slack does turn tab-separated clipboard text into a real table, because that's the format spreadsheets copy, and so do Sheets, Excel and Numbers. Pasting CSV into Sheets puts every row in one column.
Change
The table copy menu in chat gets Copy as TSV, between Copy as Markdown and Copy as CSV.
TSV and CSV now share one serializer, serializeTableElementToDelimited. Each cell is collapsed to a single line, so a tab or newline inside a cell can't break the columns.
Cell text keeps a <br> as a space and an image as its alt text. textContent dropped both, so CSV copy gets the same fix.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused change to a feature that already exists. The table menu already copies tables as Markdown or CSV, and this adds a third format to the same menu. There's no new setting, no contracts change and no new dependency.
Verification
Verified on Linux using the repo Playwright dependency and /usr/bin/google-chrome, with a project created through the app and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. No replay, mocks, fixtures, or seeded demo data.
On github/main (575579d68a), the table menu has no TSV action. CSV joins first<br>second into firstsecond and copies the failed-image error label. Stopped main before starting the PR server and reused the same app-created conversation for matching captures.
On the PR, TSV copies tab-separated rows with empty cells, breaks as spaces, image alt text, quotes, and math TeX intact. CSV quoting and Markdown copying also work. Read the actual clipboard for every format and pasted TSV back into the real composer without sending it.
Found and fixed grouped signed numbers: -1,000 was copied as '-1,000. Pushed ddcb57c243 to the existing contributor branch without force. Reinstalled, restarted, completed another real Codex turn, and rechecked the clipboard. -1,000, -42, and +1.5e2 remain numeric strings; =1+1 and -1,000+1 stay apostrophe-prefixed. The existing TSV/CSV regression cases failed before the fix.
Blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, 17 clipboard/media tests, and React compiler checks. Two independent source reviews approved ddcb57c243.

Walkthrough
Table copying now supports TSV alongside Markdown and CSV. A shared serializer extracts table-cell content, normalizes whitespace, handles formula-leading values, and applies TSV or CSV quoting. Browser tests cover text extraction and encoding, including image alt text.
A shared serializer extracts text from table cells and formats TSV or CSV output. It normalizes whitespace, prefixes nonnumeric formula-leading values with an apostrophe, and applies format-specific quoting. Image elements expose alt text for serialization. Browser tests cover cell placement, text extraction, math source, and escaping.

Merge Risk: Low · up to ddcb5
Signed grouped numbers may paste differently in spreadsheets using decimal commas; confirm that behavior or preserve those values as text. Image-placeholder copying is fixed.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 6ac4a
The new TSV option preserves formula-like table values that a destination spreadsheet may evaluate. This requires a user to copy the table and paste it into a formula-evaluating application. Similar exposure already existed through CSV; the change extends that exposure without adding service privileges or automatic execution.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new TSV route exports formula-leading chat table values as spreadsheet-ready cells without a literal-data control. A spreadsheet may interpret those values as formulas after user paste. CSV already had this weakness; the PR expands the reachable export contract rather than introducing the underlying weakness for the first time.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The originating payload is the selected table’s exported cell text. Reaching a sensitive downstream outcome requires attacker influence over that content, user copy and paste, and a destination that evaluates formulas. Any further workbook access or external effects depend on the destination’s capabilities and permissions; they were not established by the inspected path.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained injection findings identify the shared export boundary: formula-like cell text survives serialization and reaches the clipboard. The base already exposed such text through CSV. TSV creates an additional spreadsheet-oriented route, while inclusion of image alt text also broadens the data extracted from the DOM; attacker control of that image-specific route was not independently traced.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Whitespace collapsing prevents embedded tabs and newlines from creating extra TSV cells or rows, and CSV quoting escapes delimiter syntax. Neither control neutralizes a leading formula marker. Explicit menu activation and browser clipboard availability gate delivery, but do not establish that destination applications will treat each value as literal data.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define a shared literal-data policy for spreadsheet-oriented exports, including formula-prefix handling that preserves legitimate numeric values. Validate that policy against intended spreadsheet consumers and include formula-leading text, negative numbers, and image alt text in its examples.

The Slack/Sheets paste use case is concrete, but this adds a new TSV output action. The existing Markdown/CSV menu and the small implementation scope do not establish prior approval for that additional capability. Under the current prior-approval rule, this needs explicit maintainer agreement on direction and scope in an Ideas discussion. Searches of existing issues and Ideas did not find that approval; #14466 builds on this PR and is not an approval itself.
Please link an existing approval if one was missed, or use an Ideas discussion to obtain that scope decision and link it here. No duplicate bug report is needed. Without approval this is eligible for closure under the closure and reconsideration rule; this comment does not close the PR.
The supplied before/after menu images are acknowledged. I have not run the exact-base/head clipboard and paste comparison, so this is a policy assessment, not a runtime validation claim.
This PR does not meet the prior-approval requirement. ChatMarkdown adds a new Copy as TSV action and changes existing CSV break/image serialization, but the PR supplies no explicit maintainer approval for that additional capability

Keep alt text for image placeholders in table copies.
While an image has no source yet, or after it fails, ChatMarkdownImage renders a placeholder span with no img. The table serializer reads alt only from IMG elements. For these placeholders it copies the span's text instead: an empty string while the source is pending, or Image unavailable · {alt} after a failure.
Add the alt text to the placeholder, and read it in the serializer:

Add the same data-markdown-alt={props.alt} attribute to the placeholder spans in ChatMarkdownImage that render without an img: the non-standalone loading span and the standalone outer span.

Preserve grouped signed numbers.
-1,000 fails the current numeric regex and becomes '-1,000. In a locale where commas group thousands, the spreadsheet treats the raw value as numeric, while the apostrophe forces text. The previous CSV helper emitted this value unchanged. Extend the numeric pattern for comma-grouped numbers while keeping the full-string match so expressions such as -1,000+1 remain protected.

The new locale review suggestion would restore the forced-text regression for signed grouped numbers. This pass preserves the source string, matching main's CSV behavior; unsigned comma-containing values already have the same destination-locale ambiguity. Locale-aware spreadsheet interpretation remains unverified and outside this clipboard-format change.

Preserve signed comma-containing values as text when the locale is unknown.
delimitedCell treats -1,000 as numeric and emits it without a text prefix. Google Sheets uses locale-specific decimal separators, so a French-locale sheet can interpret this value as -1 instead of -1000. Prefix signed comma-containing values with an apostrophe unless the source and destination locales are known.

Problem
You can't paste a table from an agent response into Slack. Slack messages have no Markdown table syntax, and a CSV snippet shows up as a cut-off monospace preview. Slack does turn tab-separated clipboard text into a real table, because that's the format spreadsheets copy, and so do Sheets, Excel and Numbers. Pasting CSV into Sheets puts every row in one column.
