What this PR does / why we need it:

Give certified, community, and Red Hat catalog exec probes bounded connection/RPC waits and enough kubelet timeout for process startup under CPU contention. Use a 1s connection timeout, 2s RPC timeout, and 5s kubelet timeout. Increase startup failures from 15 to 120 at the unchanged 10s period (approximately 2.5 to 20 minutes), with a 30-minute deployment progress deadline so rollout monitoring does not expire inside the intended startup window.

Keep steady-state failure counts, images, resource requests/limits, and health semantics unchanged. Add asset assertions, a focused README, and all 21 catalog deployment fixtures including EtcdRestore.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

No Jira issue associated yet.

Special notes for your reviewer:

Independent of container-resource policy and zonal scheduling. This is a probe-resilience change, not a claim of measured CPU/memory savings. Permanently unhealthy startup now takes longer to trigger a restart. The extra ten minutes of progress-deadline headroom covers scheduling, image pulls, and init containers. CPO adoption rolls enabled management-side catalog deployments; no API-serving or NodePool configuration is changed.

Validation passed locally with vendored modules and bounded Go parallelism:

  • go test -race -count=1 ./control-plane-operator/controllers/hostedcontrolplane/v2/assets
  • go test -race -count=1 -run "^TestControlPlaneComponents$" ./control-plane-operator/controllers/hostedcontrolplane (full fixture verification without update/filter)
  • make lint (API and main modules: zero issues)
  • make run-gitlint, git diff --check, and git verify-commit HEAD

A bounded make pre-commit attempt timed out during product-cli compilation; full pre-commit verification/tests remain incomplete. No live contention benchmark or supported-catalog-image binary verification was performed for this extraction. Keep draft pending remaining validation. One signed-off, GPG-signed commit.

Checklist:

  • Subject and description added to both, commit and PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved catalog registry deployment reliability across certified, community, and Red Hat catalogs.
    • Increased rollout time allowance to 1,800 seconds.
    • Adjusted health-check timing and startup thresholds to better accommodate slower registry initialization and transient delays.
  • Documentation

    • Added documentation describing catalog health checks, startup behavior, rollout timing, and the deployments covered by these settings.

Bound connection and RPC waits while allowing exec startup headroom for catalog health probes.
Extend startup retries to twenty minutes and the deployment progress deadline to thirty minutes.
Keep steady-state failure counts and resources unchanged, with tests and updated fixtures.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The three catalog deployments now use explicit gRPC connection and RPC timeouts. Liveness and startup execution timeouts are 5 seconds, and startup probes allow 120 failures. Each deployment has an 1,800-second progress deadline. Parameterized tests validate these settings, resource requests, and init-container resources for all catalogs. Documentation records the shared configuration and rollout scope.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 54c39

The catalog manifests still lack required resource limits and privilege-reduction settings, so these deployment safeguards should be added before merge.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The added manifest test has several Gomega assertions without failure messages. In assets_test.go, the new assertions at lines 69, 70, 72, 96, and 98 omit messages; line 69 is the exact uncontextualized Expect(err).NotTo(HaveOccurred()) case identified by the check. The probe and init-container assertions do include context. The test loads local manifests only, so cleanup and cluster-operation timeout requirements do not apply. Its t.Run cases follow the package pattern, and the assertions cover related catalog-manifest behavior.

Resolution

Add meaningful diagnostic messages to every new assertion that currently lacks one. Include the catalog name and the specific expected item, such as a load-error message for LoadDeploymentManifest, container-count and registry-name messages, a progress-deadline message, and a registry-resource message.

Add CPU and memory limits to every catalog container and assert them.

The repository’s Kubernetes/OpenShift manifest convention requires CPU and memory limits on every container. All three catalog Deployments currently provide only registry requests and no resources for either init container. The exact assertions in assets_test.go enforce this absence. Add limits to registry and both init containers in all three manifests, then update the assertions to require those limits.
