Fix off-by-4 in Chunks::struct_size (missing Borsh Vec length prefix)

Problem

Chunks::struct_size() is documented as "returns how many bytes Chunks will
occupy" and is the value used by the crash-and-burn assert! in Chunks::new()
that keeps a Chunks PDA within MAX_ACCOUNT_ALLOC_PER_INSTRUCTION_SIZE
(10,240 bytes). committor-service's PreparationTask::init_instruction
relies on that same guarantee and carries an explicit SAFETY comment about it.

Chunks is Borsh-serialized and its first field is Vec<u8>, which Borsh
encodes as a u32 length prefix followed by the bytes. The helper only counted
the bytes:

Walkthrough

Chunks::struct_size now includes the Borsh u32 length prefix for the bits vector. A test compares the estimate with Borsh’s encoded length for selected chunk counts.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b649b

Initialization fails for valid chunks at the maximum supported size. This is a narrow boundary regression with a straightforward fix.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b649b

The correction strengthens the account-size guard without adding an entrypoint or weakening account authority checks. Its main behavioral change is earlier rejection of sizes near the allocation limit.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed guard affects Chunks account creation for existing program and buffered-service paths. The reviewed source shows no new route into Init or broader account authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing trust boundary requires a signing authority and verified program-derived accounts. The corrected estimate tightens the constructor’s allocation guard; service preparation also uses the actual serialized length.

Allow the documented 10,240-byte maximum.

On the 64-bit target, chunk_count = 81_808 produces a Borsh encoding of 10,240 bytes. The public Init instruction accepts this count and matching account size, but Chunks::new rejects it because the guard uses <. The constant documents 10,240 bytes as the maximum allocation, so equality must be accepted.

Suggested fix
-                < consts::MAX_ACCOUNT_ALLOC_PER_INSTRUCTION_SIZE as usize,
+                <= consts::MAX_ACCOUNT_ALLOC_PER_INSTRUCTION_SIZE as usize,

Thanks for catching this. The fix was already incorporated into #1743 (merged September 30): Chunks::struct_size() now includes the four-byte Borsh Vec prefix and counts the serialized usize as a u64. #1755 subsequently moved this implementation to programs/committor-interface/src/state/chunks.rs.

Closing as superseded.
