Summary

A raised per-request allowance previously stayed fully charged until the response settled, even after a tiny JSON body was parsed. This could serialize sessions or produce local 503 server_busy responses despite available host RAM.

  • Add optional top-level maxConcurrentInboundBodyBytes in config.json. The shared admission budget defaults to the existing 512 MiB, and operators can explicitly choose 512 MiB through 2 GiB. Omission, zero, or malformed values retain the default; valid positive integers are clamped to the supported range. There is no unbounded/disabled mode or automatic RAM detection.
  • Capture the selected policy at proxy startup for one process-wide owner shared by all listeners. A configuration edit requires restart. Reconfiguration preserves outstanding charges and FIFO waiters instead of creating an independent budget or erasing live leases.
  • After successful bounded JSON parsing, shrink each reservation to the observed wire/decoded size, including the existing normalized-JSON measurement when available, capped by the original allowance. Retain that measured charge through downstream work and response EOF/error or settled producer cancellation.
  • Preserve conservative upload admission for compressed bodies and untrusted Content-Length. Capacity pressure uses a FIFO queue of at most 32 unread uploads with a 120-second deadline. Full/expired queues retain HTTP 503, Retry-After, protocol envelopes, request IDs, and receiving-listener CORS.
  • Document the setting and memory tradeoff in all eight existing inbound-admission locales and configuration references. Cover config persistence/degradation, startup capture, unchanged default, explicit opt-in, accounting transitions, and existing HTTP lifetime regressions.

Example for a host whose operator deliberately selects the larger budget:

{
  "maxInboundBodyBytes": 536870912,
  "maxConcurrentInboundBodyBytes": 2147483648
}

The per-request default/ceiling remain 256/512 MiB. The additional admission gate still applies only above the 256 MiB per-request default. With both the per-request allowance and shared budget at 512 MiB, even one retained measured byte prevents another full 512 MiB allowance; the default does not resolve that specific concurrency case. An explicit 2 GiB budget permits four full 512 MiB upload allowances before measurement, and smaller parsed requests can overlap further as capacity is returned.

Maintainer policy review remains requested. This revision removes the automatic 512 MiB-to-2 GiB default increase. The opt-in ceiling, bounded queue and HTTP reservation lifetime remain reviewable policy decisions; the prior owner hold is not treated as withdrawn. Admission bytes neither preallocate the configured amount nor bound RSS/parsed heap. More admitted requests can increase peak memory. Keep this PR Draft pending current-head review, authorized CI and the owner's decision. No live service configuration or resource limit is changed by this PR revision.

Verification

Current head: 1b2a9df76317ee1698da6c7b49b37f7f5f7cba6e, rebased on fetched dev 2606f6f922d6c897836f4aafc0910f46293e5786 on 2026-10-27 (KST). The previous head had fallen 43 commits behind dev and GitHub reported a conflict. The only conflict was the explicitShards roster in scripts/test-layout/layout.json: dev added layout-combos.json and layout-credit-renewal.json, and this PR adds layout-server-inbound.json. The resolution keeps the dev roster and appends this PR's shard. git range-diff marks commits 2–4 unchanged; commit 1 differs only in that roster context. No source, test, documentation or behavior change was made in this revision.

The 43 upstream commits were checked for interaction with this PR. Overlapping files (src/types/config.ts, structure/config.md, structure/transports/byte-accounting.md, the eight configuration/providers.md locale pages and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json) merged automatically in unrelated sections. Upstream edits to src/server/index/serve-options.ts, src/server/index/live-sideband.ts and src/config/schema/leaf-validators.ts cover audio WebSocket close ownership, model capability fields and provider input modalities; none touches inbound body admission, the shared budget or request decompression. No dependency, lockfile or test-runner pin changed.

Reviews, issue comments and inline threads were refreshed. No new maintainer, Codex or CodeRabbit finding exists since the previous revision. CodeRabbit skips automatic review on this Draft. The Russian wording finding remains fixed, resolved and outdated. No withdrawal of the maintainer resource-policy hold was present.

The complete suite and the unrestricted import-connected run were not run on the shared Windows host. This uses the documented resource exception: the complete focused admission, HTTP-lifetime, request-ID and transport files, plus the data-reading repository guards, cover this PR's boundaries. Broader whole-repository and additional-platform coverage remains for authorized current-head CI. Test traffic uses disposable homes and synthetic upstreams; it does not establish an RSS/heap bound or live-provider/native-client acceptance.

Earlier intermittent result, still disclosed: at the older head 16bda81b4e2f6cda34b3a58bbc4420ea6f6dd993, one managed-native SSE case in messages-request-id-endpoint.test.ts once received 502 instead of 200 and then passed in isolation and on a complete-file rerun. Its cause was not captured. At this head the complete file passed 27/27 on its first run; that is not proof the earlier cause is gone.

Current-head hosted execution (1b2a9df76317ee1698da6c7b49b37f7f5f7cba6e): Cross-platform CI 40435720461 and Catalog async contracts 40435720348 report action_required, awaiting maintainer authorization. PR target, hygiene and labeling workflows were queued at publication. Older-head results do not validate this revision. GitHub reports MERGEABLE, and the branch was zero commits behind fetched dev at publication.

The prior owner hold is not treated as withdrawn. This proposal preserves the existing 512 MiB default, but the opt-in ceiling, bounded queue and HTTP reservation lifetime still require owner policy acceptance. The PR stays Draft with readiness 0/4 pending required current-head review/CI and that decision.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. The owner accepted the resource policy and an independent maintainer-side review passed at 57900d1 (see PR comment 6450504234).

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented. (Maintainer integration: 327 pass / 0 fail on 57900d1 plus typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan; full suite left to CI.)
  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a configurable shared budget for large inbound request bodies. It defaults to 512 MiB and can be explicitly raised to 2 GiB.
    • When the per-request body limit exceeds 256 MiB, requests reserve capacity before body reading. Reservations can shrink after successful parsing and remain held until the response completes or processing is canceled.
    • Up to 32 requests can wait in FIFO order for up to 120 seconds. A full queue or timeout returns a retryable 503; oversized bodies continue to receive 413.
  • Documentation
    • Updated configuration and request-body guidance across supported languages, including queue behavior and clarification that the budget is not a cap on actual memory use.

Walkthrough

The change adds a configurable process-wide admission budget for raised inbound-body limits. Requests reserve capacity before body reads, may reduce reservations after parsing, and can wait in a bounded FIFO queue. Configuration handling, tests, and documentation cover these behaviors.

Follow-up intake at 3d594136752040fc0e54f02979edee5def1440f6 against dev 12025981e5a304cdb6b1b54f525ba8554f623977. The body requests Draft pending a maintainer resource-policy decision, but the API currently reports isDraft=false. Please return it to Draft while that decision is unresolved. Raising the process-wide reservation pool from 512 MiB to 2 GiB is a separate policy change from shrinking measured small-body reservations, and permits four full uploads before parsing without bounding RSS/heap. The owner needs that explicit tradeoff and queue/lifetime acceptance, not only eight small-stream success fixtures. Preserve initial conservative admission for compressed/untrusted Content-Length, FIFO cancellation/grant races, producer settlement, request IDs/CORS and bounded queue/timeouts. No local resource caps, deployment limit or live service was changed.

@Ingwannu Clarifying the intended tradeoff at 6e15a856bc2414d74ba6cc8e442cd85278838015: the goal is to reduce admission-induced waiting and local 503 server_busy responses across concurrent sessions when the host has sufficient RAM, particularly for deployments that explicitly raise maxInboundBodyBytes above the 256 MiB default.

There are two distinct changes:

  • Measured reservation shrinking: previously, even a tiny successfully parsed body could hold the full 512 MiB allowance until its response settled, preventing another session from entering despite available host memory. Shrinking returns unused admission capacity while retaining the measured charge through the existing HTTP ownership lifetime.
  • A larger initial admission pool: a 2 GiB pool can admit up to four full 512 MiB upload allowances before measurement, when otherwise idle. This is intended to reduce serialization and overload refusals for concurrent uploads on hosts with adequate headroom. It is a separate resource-policy choice from shrinking.

The pool is an accounting limit, not 2 GiB of preallocated RAM, and increasing it does not reduce memory per request. Accepting more simultaneous requests can increase peak memory; wire/decoded buffers, strings, and parsed objects can consume more than the counted admission bytes. The implementation does not detect available RAM or adapt this static pool to the host, so sufficient RAM is an operating assumption, not an enforced guarantee or a claim that 2 GiB is safe for every deployment.

Initial admission remains conservative for compressed bodies and untrusted Content-Length. The FIFO queue remains bounded to 32 waiting requests and 120 seconds, with no application body reads before admission; cancellation/grant cleanup and producer-settlement ownership remain part of the proposed contract. The small-stream regression fixtures exercise that accounting and lifecycle behavior, not a peak-RAM benchmark for four real 512 MiB uploads.

I have returned the PR to Draft and unchecked readiness as requested. Owner acceptance of the increased pool, queue, and lifetime policy remains unresolved, and current-head executable CI still requires maintainer authorization. This clarification explains the concurrency benefit; it does not treat that benefit as resource-policy approval.

Acknowledged 6e15a856bc2414d74ba6cc8e442cd85278838015 and the distinction between measured reservation shrinking and raising the admission pool to 2 GiB. The clarification correctly does not claim adaptive RAM detection or a universal safe peak-memory bound. Keeping the PR Draft is appropriate while that separate host resource-policy decision remains with @lidge-jun. No local/host limit has been raised for this review, and I am not treating the shrink-only benefit as approval of the larger pool. A separately reviewable shrink-only patch would let the correctness improvement be evaluated independently of the resource-policy change.

At 6e15a856bc2414d74ba6cc8e442cd85278838015, independent capped/fresh-home budget-unit validation passed 28 tests, 0 failures. The counter-only fixture does not allocate multi-GiB request bodies. I reviewed the FIFO/shrink/release/cancellation code and approved the three current hosted functional workflows after inspecting the changed execution surface; they must actually complete before CI is called green.

This does not accept the separate 512 MiB → 2 GiB admission-policy change or establish an RSS/heap bound. Your explicit distinction between measured shrinking and admitting four full upload allowances is retained. Draft/owner resource-policy hold stays in force; no local cap or live service limit was increased.

Status for integration (L8 lane).

  • Resource-policy hold: the project owner's decision was requested through the release-coordination thread and answered "accept the policy": the default stays 512 MiB, an explicit opt-in may raise the process-wide reservation pool to at most 2 GiB (no RSS/heap bound is claimed), with a FIFO queue of at most 32 waiters and a 120 s wait. @Ingwannu's hold (comments 6290685571, 6309042076, 6309854938) deferred exactly this decision to the owner, so it is treated as resolved by that decision.
  • Independent review (GPT-6.1 Sol) at the earlier local merge found no code blocker: admission/accounting (full initial charge, FIFO, monotonic shrink, idempotent release, grant-then-abort cleanup), config back-compat, the moved tests (all 90 original assertion/probe statements retained byte-for-byte) and the eight locales were approved. One NIT (a source comment naming the old test file) is fixed in 57900d1.
  • Current dev merged in (normal merge, no rebase); only the explicitShards line in scripts/test-layout/layout.json conflicted and keeps both layout-server-inbound.json and dev's entries.
  • On head 57900d1: config-concurrent-inbound-body, inbound-body-budget, inbound-body-admission, server-request-body-size, messages/chat request-id endpoints, request-decompress, layout/tooling/file-size-ratchet/structure guards and the Lab core boundary test: 327 pass / 0 fail; typecheck, structure:check and privacy:scan pass.
  • Marked ready for review; merge waits for a delta review of the latest changes and PR CI on the exact head.

Owner

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md dev-only maintainer integration; not a self-approval).

  • Head merged: 57900d1d8c3093d91fe3ff7061cb172fe80dd067.
  • Exact-head CI: Cross-platform CI run 40561637103 success and Catalog async contracts run 40561637136 success (fork runs approved by a maintainer after confirming the PR changes no workflow, CI script or dependency files); every other check on this head passes.
  • Resource policy: accepted by the project owner (512 MiB default; explicit opt-in up to 2 GiB; FIFO of at most 32 waiters; 120 s wait), which resolves the maintainer hold that deferred this decision to the owner (see comment 6450504234).
  • Independent review (GPT-6.1 Sol): round 1 found no code blocker (one NIT, fixed); delta round 2 PASS (0 findings) on this head: only inherited dev edits plus the comment fix, every request-body reader still behind admission, reservations released exactly once, policy numbers exactly as accepted, ratchet headroom kept (src/server/index.ts 891/893).
  • Currency: the readiness gate counts this head 15 commits behind dev and re-drafted the PR. Instead of another push and CI cycle, the head was re-checked just before merge: it merges cleanly with current dev, and the inbound-body, request-id, decompression, Lab-boundary and layout/ratchet/structure suites pass on that merge (327 pass / 0 fail; typecheck pass). Marked ready by the integrating maintainer on that basis.
  • Not run here: full-size upload/RSS benchmarks and live-client acceptance.
