Summary

A web-search source without a title became a url_citation with no title key (...(s.title ? { title: s.title } : {}) in src/bridge/sse.ts and src/bridge/response-json.ts). OpenAI Responses requires title on every url_citation in replayed history, so once such a message is in the conversation, any request that carries it back fails with the same 400, most visibly /responses/compact:

Missing required parameter: 'input[N].content[0].annotations[M].title'

It is deterministic: retrying never helps and the session cannot compact.

  • Generation (SSE and buffered JSON) now sets title: s.title || s.url.
  • stripProviderInputItemMetadata also calls a new repairUrlCitationAnnotations, so history already written without a title is fixed on the way to OpenAI-operated destinations. It fills a missing or non-string title from the URL and coerces start_index/end_index to non-negative safe integers (digit strings are parsed; negatives, unsafe values and anything else become 0). Other annotation types, unknown keys and other items are untouched, and a body that is already valid is returned by reference. Third-party gateways keep the existing gating and are not rewritten.

To reproduce, send a Responses request whose assistant message has annotations: [{ "type": "url_citation", "url": "https://example.com/a", "start_index": 0, "end_index": 0 }] to a native OpenAI route, or to /responses/compact.

Verification

Base is dev at 815af9046, test runner Bun 1.4.3, Windows 11.

  • bun test tests/responses/responses-url-citation-title-repair.test.ts tests/adapters/bridge.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 138 pass / 0 fail. The new file does not pass with src/ reverted to dev.
  • bun x tsc --noEmit: clean.
  • bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan: pass.
  • bun run test:changed did not finish on my machine (it hit my 550s limit). 12 files failed before that: bearer-admission-routed-provider, account-pool-management-api, anthropic-instance-recovery, grok-47-fast-model-wire, active-turn-disconnect, provider-api-keys, anthropic-image-retry-e2e, routing-profile-management-editor, kiro-pool-load-settings, routing-policy-surface-parity, provider-key-store, provider-completion-test-ingress. I ran each of them on its own on an unmodified dev checkout at 815af9046 and every one fails or times out there too (for example SPEND_LEDGER_OWNER_HOME_CONFLICT in account-pool-management-api), so they look local to this environment rather than caused by this change. I did not get a clean full-suite run.

tests/adapters/bridge.test.ts had one expectation that a source without a title yields an annotation without title; it now expects the URL.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Web-search citations now include a title, using the source URL when a title is missing or empty.
    • URL citation titles and position markers are corrected when missing or invalid, helping citations display consistently.
    • Other citation information remains unchanged when repairs are made, and valid citation data is preserved.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

📝 Walkthrough

The change repairs invalid URL citation titles and indexes in OpenAI Responses request projections. JSON and SSE web-search citation annotations now use the source URL as the title when the source title is unavailable.

…story on replay

A web-search source without a title produced a url_citation with no title
key. Replaying that message to OpenAI Responses, most visibly through
/responses/compact, fails every time with
"Missing required parameter: input[N].content[0].annotations[M].title".

Generation now falls back to the URL, and the OpenAI-bound request
projection fills title and integer start_index/end_index on url_citation
annotations already sitting in history. Other gateways are left alone.

#7573 is now merged; I did not submit an old-state change request after closure. Draft #7608 supplies the missing explicit test-layout registrations and mapped citation-replay/generated-title contract, without a runtime change. The existing seed resolver already classifies the test, so this is policy/documentation completion rather than a claimed current layout-test failure. Focused citation/layout tests: 36 pass; structure and ordinary privacy checks pass. The pre-existing layout.json size overage is tracked separately in #7607; #7608 keeps that file's line count unchanged and remains Draft pending the base repair/hosted checks.
