Summary

Keep caller-controlled model text from being treated as account-wide cooldown evidence. When the requested model contains the reset-clock wording understood by the refusal parser, CLI error output is ambiguous, so that turn does not create a new cached refusal.

The adapter still passes the model to the CLI unchanged and delivers its errors normally. Existing preflight checks, recorded/probed limits, and successful responses retain their behavior. Normal aliases, Bedrock ARNs, Vertex model IDs, and bracketed context variants remain supported.

Tradeoff

A genuine CLI-only limit reported during a turn with reset-shaped model text is still returned to the client but is not newly cached. This is a narrow attribution guard, not a claim that every possible reflected input is identified.

Verification

  • Bun 1.4.3: bun scripts/test.ts --changed=12025981e5a304cdb6b1b54f525ba8554f623977 tests/providers/claude-cli-usage-admission.test.ts tests/providers/claude-cli-adapter.test.ts — 2/2 selected files, 53 passed, 0 failed, 197 assertions.
  • Before the implementation change, four new regressions failed through mock result-error, exit-stderr, EOF-stderr, and reset-only-model attribution paths. They verify the adapter/runner callback and persisted refusal state.
  • Controls cover normal refusal recording, model-argument preservation, preflight 429 without spawning, and successful turns.
  • TypeScript, structure SSOT, privacy scan, and git diff --check passed. Independent source review found no blocking issue; comments were clarified to distinguish mocked reflection from observed CLI behavior.

No real provider, account, or installed-CLI request was made. Actual deployed CLI reflection behavior and the full local suite were not tested. Hosted CI on this exact head passed, including all four test shards and the final ci gate.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • The owning Claude CLI document describes the attribution rule and tradeoff.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of Claude CLI errors when model identifiers contain reset-clock text.
    • Prevented unattributable usage limits from being cached while continuing to surface errors to clients.
    • Preserved caching and launch-blocking behavior for genuine usage-limit refusals.
    • Maintained model argument forwarding, successful turns, and preflight cooldown behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

The Claude CLI adapter now checks requested model IDs for reset-clock phrases before recording usage refusals. The original error remains visible to the client. Genuine refusals continue to be recorded, and existing admission limits continue to apply.

Changes: Claude CLI refusal handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared reset-clock detection
src/adapters/claude-cli/usage-admission.ts
A shared pattern powers the exported containsClaudeResetClock detector and parseClaudeReset. The parser retains its limit-wording requirement.
Refusal recording gate and validation
src/adapters/claude-cli/adapter.ts, tests/providers/claude-cli-usage-admission.test.ts, structure/providers/claude-cli-replay.md
Before recording a CLI usage refusal, the adapter checks whether the requested model ID contains reset-clock text. Tests cover client-visible errors, refusal recording, unchanged model arguments, cooldown behavior, and successful turns. The provider documentation describes the admission behavior.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b7372

This change stops caller-supplied model text from creating false account-wide cooldowns. A genuine limit seen only on a turn with reset-shaped model text is still returned to the client but not cached, which is a documented and bounded tradeoff. It is ready to merge.

Correctness approval at b7372e08541999f5ed55fc4cd89547e3d160ae6b against dev 12025981e5a304cdb6b1b54f525ba8554f623977: the shared lexical reset-clock predicate fences only new CLI-refusal inference from reflected model text; model argv and original errors, existing cooldown preflight, normal refusals, legitimate ARN/Vertex/context aliases and successful turns retain their behavior.

Independent bounded Bun 1.4.3 regression: 53 pass / 0 fail across two files. Each workload ran alone under CPU/RAM/swap/process/time caps and fresh private HOME/CODEX_HOME/OPENCODEX_HOME/TMPDIR. Existing frozen dependency maps and lock matched; no live account/provider/client config was used. Current-head hosted ci/gates and the latest effective hygiene/enforce-target checks pass; older cancelled repetitions are superseded by later successful executions of those checks. Typecheck is evidenced by hosted gates, not a claimed new local compiler run. The changed contract and relevant negative controls were reviewed. This approval does not merge, release, certify unselected platforms, or authorize live operations.
