Summary

  • A completed hosted image_generation_call can contain valid base64 image data without producing a visible image in Codex App. For loopback-admitted, recognized Codex Responses clients, project hosted image items into assistant messages with phase: final_answer and Markdown links to validated local artifacts. Apply this consistently to SSE, JSON, and JSON synthesized into SSE.
  • Keep the projection after continuation-cache observers so cached hosted items retain their upstream form. For full client history replay, replace exact generated local image links in assistant content with opaque artifact HTTP references before request dispatch. This works without generated item ids and after artifact pruning; it leaves unrelated paths, user messages and tool payloads unchanged. Generic and remotely admitted clients retain the hosted format. No additional generation request or provider-routing change is introduced.
  • Reuse image validation, byte budgets and retention. Use exclusive random artifact files, bound display state to 128 items, and report unsupported or invalid data safely. URL results are not downloaded. Oversized JSON snapshots are rejected before artifact creation; a streamed overflow terminates with a controlled failure.
  • Add synthetic-image regression tests, test-layout registration, and user/architecture documentation. No GUI source changes.

Closes #6231

Verification

Latest patch: e9b710fd90ef73d2bc0a860336a0e3713c12114d.

  • The delivery regression initially reproduced the missing display: 18 passed, 9 failed before the projection fix.
  • CodeRabbit's missing-identity finding was independently reproduced with a failing regression, then fixed. Events without a valid output index or a string item id now pass through without allocating display state. Index-only and id-only items retain separate identities.
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test tests/responses/responses-hosted-image-display.test.ts tests/responses/responses-hosted-image-delivery.test.ts — 60 passed, 0 failed, 475 assertions, using repository-pinned Bun 1.4.0. The queue override allowed this short isolated check alongside the already-running full suite.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check, and git diff --cached --check — passed on the latest patch.
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts — 27 passed, 0 failed, 638 assertions.
  • The earlier documentation build passed (537 pages); the latest guard correction changes only source, focused tests, and the Images architecture contract.
  • An isolated probe using the actual Codex engine bundled with the desktop app exercised the production proxy against a synthetic local upstream: first-turn generation, artifact creation, persisted-session resume, and the next request all succeeded. The engine emitted image Markdown; replay sent an opaque artifact reference and no generated local artifact path. Both engine processes exited 0. This proves the engine/session chain, not desktop pixel rendering.

Broader test results and limits

  • bun run test:changed on the preceding patch: 7,415 passed, 4 skipped, 23 failed across 294 files. Twenty-one failure names matched the baseline-source control; the other two passed when their files were run separately (4 tests, 111 assertions).
  • The 21 management failures were traced to test hostnames resolving to benchmark addresses and being rejected by the destination policy. A diagnostic process-local DNS override, limited to the affected fixture hostnames and populated from public DNS answers/NXDOMAIN results, made the three affected files pass: 146 passed, 0 failed, 1,145 assertions. This is controlled diagnostic evidence, not an unmodified-suite pass. No system DNS, user provider configuration, or destination protections were changed.
  • bun run test completed in 613 seconds: 34,271 passed, 71 skipped, 70 failed, plus 15 errors, summed across its 18 lanes. It began on 23e6748 before the missing-identity correction; it is not an exact-final-head pass. Latest image regression and static checks are reported separately above. Besides the DNS failures, this run encountered certificate/picker timeouts, subprocess/shutdown failures, and timing/state assertions. These are not all established as unrelated to this PR.
  • After the full run, bun run test --parallel=1 on the eight files below produced 132 passed, 8 failed, 1 error, 560 assertions. A separate bun run test tests/codex-integration/native-codex-toggle.test.ts produced 12 passed, 1 failed, 32 assertions. Most certificate timeouts disappeared, but these reruns are still not green and do not establish baseline equivalence.
Isolated rerun command and remaining failures
bun run test --parallel=1 \
  tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-ca.test.ts \
  tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-recovery.test.ts \
  tests/claude-integration/claude-picker-runtime.test.ts \

  tests/responses/responses-inbound-store-default.test.ts \
  tests/server/plaintext-v2-agent-messages-server.test.ts \
  tests/service/shutdown-launcher.test.ts

Remaining failures:

  • Serving runtimes: real-child nonzero exit and forwarded SIGTERM status (2).
  • Picker runtime: only the app browser's tunnels consult the picker (1).
  • Plaintext Responses: headerless drip-feed rejection exceeded its 3-second assertion (1).
  • Retained-root serialization: two processes at the management seam (1).
  • Launcher shutdown: SIGINT, SIGTERM, and SIGHUP cases did not reach their expected injected configuration (3).
  • Separate Codex-toggle rerun: off/on status with the same stale server configuration (1).

Upstream baseline comparison

The comparison checkout is an unmodified detached dev at 86ac102611e86ec12b3700b8ec8db2bd4deca2ff, still the current upstream tip at verification time. The PR head remains e9b710fd90ef73d2bc0a860336a0e3713c12114d. Both use the same repository-pinned Bun and dependency versions; test processes were run sequentially with isolated test homes.

Targeted group PR result Unmodified dev result Comparison
Three management files listed below 125 passed, 21 failed 125 passed, 21 failed All 21 failure names match; DNS diagnostic described above.
Eight-file isolated rerun listed above 132 passed, 8 failed, 1 error 132 passed, 8 failed, 2 errors Seven failure names match. Each run also hit a different headerless-body timing test.
Native Codex toggle 12 passed, 1 failed 12 passed, 1 failed The same off/on status assertion fails.
Only the two headerless-body timing cases 2 passed, 0 failed 2 passed, 0 failed Seven assertions per checkout; neither failure reproduced in this reduced run.

Management command:

bun run test tests/server/management-provider-validation.test.ts tests/server/management-provider-verbosity.test.ts tests/adapters/anthropic/anthropic-fast-opt-in.test.ts

Timing control, run once in each checkout:

bun run test tests/server/plaintext-v2-agent-messages-server.test.ts -t 'bounds the headerless prefix probe|fails closed when a headerless body drip-feeds'

This establishes baseline reproduction for 29 matching failure names and reduced-run success for the two variable timing cases. It does not make either full suite green or prove that every full-suite error has the same cause. No unrelated runtime modules were changed to hide the failures.

Retention boundary: a synthetic overlapping-image probe confirmed that completing later batches can prune an older image while its response is still active. The existing upstream artifact helper also prunes the oldest file at 201 files, retaining 200. This PR reuses that count-based policy; there is no active-response pinning or permanent-history guarantee. The user guide already states that old images expire. CodeRabbit's retained architecture concern is therefore a real limitation of the shared retention policy, left explicitly for maintainer disposition rather than claimed fixed by the item-identity guard.

Display decision: retain local filesystem links for desktop display and use opaque HTTP artifact references only in replayed assistant history. The installed client has an additional URL-safety gate for remote Markdown media, so localhost HTTP rendering is not assumed supported.

Large-image measurement: a synthetic JSON projection probe measured 2.5 ms at 1 MiB, 10.3 ms at 8 MiB, and 131.6 ms at 48 MiB, including parsing, validation and synchronous artifact creation. Timer delay matched the synchronous operation. This is a single-machine diagnostic; near-limit images can briefly block the event loop.

Coverage limits: darwin/linux/win32 relay choices are simulated on macOS. Real three-OS filesystem/UI validation and fresh desktop display/reopen acceptance remain pending. Remote full-test CI has not run. This PR stays Draft pending fresh desktop display/reopen acceptance, the latest-head automated review, and disposition of the documented broader-test and retention limitations.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md: Added documentation for rendering completed hosted image-generation results from routed Responses providers: validated base64 images are saved locally and delivered as final assistant image messages for streaming and non-streaming requests, without another generation request or provider change.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md: Added documentation for replacing OpenCoded-generated local image links with opaque artifact references in replayed assistant history. The compatibility is limited to loopback-admitted requests from recognized Codex clients; other clients retain hosted responses. It excludes previews and URL-only results, uses existing artifact retention, and documents visible failures for invalid images or local write errors.
  • observed — Modified behavior in scripts/test-layout/layout.json: Adds explicit responses group assignments for the hosted-image delivery and display tests.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/server/responses/passthrough-delivery.ts: Imports the hosted-image display rewrite and local Codex image-client predicate.

로컬 표시에 절대 파일 경로를 쓸지, 기존처럼 /v1/opencodex/artifacts/...

Baseline follow-up for e9b710f:

  • An unmodified checkout of current dev (86ac102) reproduces 29 matching failure names: 21 management cases, seven cases in the eight-file isolated group, and the native Codex off/on status assertion.
  • The two variable headerless-body timing cases both pass when selected alone on dev and on this PR (2 tests / 7 assertions in each checkout). This does not turn the full run green.
  • The latest patch still has 60 passing image regressions, passing type/structure/privacy/layout checks, and successful native-engine generation/session-resume evidence. Fresh desktop rendering/reopen acceptance is still pending.
  • The shared retention probe confirms the architecture caveat: the existing 200-file policy can expire an older active/replayed image. The upstream helper has the same count-based behavior. The PR description records this limitation explicitly; active-response pinning would be a separate shared-retention change, not something the missing-identity guard fixes.

The previous inline identity finding is fixed and its thread resolved. The latest completed CodeRabbit review still points at 23e6748, so no latest-head review success is claimed. Please re-review the new commit and assess the documented retention boundary. This PR remains Draft.

Thanks @chiperman. To get this into the next release without a fork CI approval round, I carried it onto current dev as #6394. Your three commits keep your authorship, and the squash will carry a Co-authored-by trailer. The only conflicts were the two test-layout registries, and one maintainer commit moves six lines of structure doc to stay within the line budget. Review, CI and merge continue on #6394. Once that lands, this PR will be closed as carried.

…carry #6233) (#6394)

Carries #6233 by @chiperman onto dev. For loopback-admitted, recognized Codex Responses clients, a completed hosted image_generation_call is projected into an assistant final_answer message with a Markdown link to a validated local artifact (SSE, JSON, and JSON-to-SSE). When the client replays history, on both ordinary requests and remote compaction, generated local links in assistant content are replaced by opaque artifact references before dispatch, so local paths never reach an upstream. Artifacts reuse the image validation, byte budgets and retention rules. They are written exclusively with random names, display state is bounded, and URL results are not downloaded.

Maintainer commits: compaction-path redaction and normalized artifact-link matching (security review finding), plus a structure-doc line-budget move.

Closes #6231
