Summary

Kiro traffic ignored the configured provider egress. The Kiro retry ladder called fetchWithAttemptDeadline without the provider-aware executor, so every Kiro send went straight through globalThis.fetch: a user who set an egress proxy for Kiro still had Kiro requests leave directly, and Kiro's inner retries skipped pacing. Separately, a 502/503/504 from the canonical runtime host went straight to the client even though a q.* alternate exists, a header deadline threw a raw TimeoutError, and final 5xx responses could carry bounded upstream text.

After this change:

  • Every Kiro physical send — first send, connection-reset recovery, 429 rounds, the q.* alternate, and the completion fallback — goes through the provider executor, so egress and pacing apply.
  • A 502/503/504 received before any client-visible output rotates once to the q.* alternate inside the send budget. The alternate is derived from the URL actually dispatched, so an account switch that moved the request to another region rotates within that region. After visible output, the completion fallback does not rotate.
  • A header deadline becomes a fixed 504 Kiro upstream gateway timeout; a caller abort is never rotated and never turned into a 504.
  • Final Kiro 5xx responses carry fixed public text; diagnostics record only a closed-set status and code, never upstream message text.
  • Google's use of the shared deadline helper is unchanged (regression test added).

Layer 020 of devlog/_plan/260926_kiro_lb_parity2/. Layer 010 (#5967) is merged, so this PR targets dev.

Stack (manual chain, merge bottom-up):

Verification

  • bun run typecheck — pass
  • bun test tests/providers/kiro/ tests/adapters/google/google-vertex-http.test.ts tests/adapters/adapter-inner-send-budget.test.ts tests/adapters/adapter-inner-send-budget-wiring.test.ts tests/lib/credential-redirect-guard.test.ts tests/lib/upstream-retry.test.ts tests/server/server-kiro-completion-e2e.test.ts tests/server/server-kiro-oauth-401-replay.test.ts — 717 pass, 0 fail
  • tests/providers/kiro/kiro-transport-parity.test.ts (new) — 16 pass, including account-switch-before-alternate, cross-region switch with an empty-url 503, no rotation after visible progress, and an opaque upstream marker never reaching the client, debug ring, or stderr
  • Layout, file-size ratchet, and core–Lab boundary tests — 52 pass; privacy:scan, structure:check, docs-site build — pass
  • Full-suite run in a clean worktree and hosted CI: see the follow-up comment.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (reference/adapters.md en/fr/tr, structure/providers/kiro.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md, structure/transports/inventory.md)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (Egress now applies to Kiro; an account-switch rebuild sends only the current account's credentials; no upstream text reaches logs or clients on 5xx.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Kiro requests can now retry through an alternate endpoint after a 502, 503, or 504 response, provided output has not started.
    • Header timeouts return a 504 response, while caller cancellations remain cancellations.
    • Final HTTP 5xx errors show a generic message instead of exposing upstream details. Hard quota errors and other service errors are not replayed.
  • Documentation

    • Updated Kiro adapter guidance to describe fallback, timeout, cancellation, and error-message behavior.

Every Kiro physical send (first send, reset recovery, 429 rounds, the q.*
alternate and the completion fallback) now goes through the provider-aware
executor, so the configured egress proxy and pacing apply to Kiro traffic.
A 502/503/504 received before any client-visible output rotates once to the
q.* alternate inside the send budget, derived from the URL that was actually
dispatched. A header deadline surfaces as a fixed 504 and a caller abort is
never rotated. Final Kiro 5xx responses carry fixed public text; diagnostics
record only closed-set status and code.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Kiro retries now use the supplied executor and can rotate qualifying gateway errors to an alternate host. Header timeouts return 504 responses. Final HTTP 5xx errors use fixed public text and emit bounded diagnostics. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

Changes

Kiro transport behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Executor-backed retries and gateway rotation
src/adapters/kiro-retry.ts, src/adapters/kiro/adapter.ts, tests/providers/kiro/*, tests/adapters/google/google-vertex-http.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/adapters.md, structure/providers/kiro.md, structure/transports/inventory.md, devlog/_plan/260926_kiro_lb_parity2/020_transport_egress_rotation_timeouts.md
Kiro sends use the supplied executor and pacing. Canonical 502, 503, and 504 responses can trigger an alternate-host attempt. Completion fallback controls rotation based on whether output has started. Timeout handling and caller cancellation are covered by tests.
Fixed HTTP 5xx messages and diagnostics
src/adapters/kiro-errors.ts, src/adapters/kiro/stream.ts, tests/providers/kiro/kiro-transport-parity.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/fr/reference/adapters.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/tr/reference/adapters.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md
Kiro HTTP 5xx responses use fixed public messages and emit diagnostics with bounded status labels and codes. Stream fallback errors use the safe-message function. Tests check that upstream response details do not appear in client events, debug logs, or stderr.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 579a8

An independent executor timeout may appear as a Kiro gateway deadline, and the account-switch fallback test does not protect its stated behavior. The remaining documentation discrepancies may mislead readers. These are bounded risks suitable for owner follow-up before or after merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 579a8

The change restores configured egress and improves error handling, but two bounded retry paths can resend a request without preserving the intended continuation or establishing that the first send had no effect. Neither path establishes credential disclosure or an authorization bypass.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: If account selection becomes stale before completion-fallback dispatch, credential refresh rebuilds the original request rather than the continuation request. After partial output, the physical send can therefore repeat the initial prompt instead of sending the assistant replay and completion payload.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new gateway rotation repeats an authenticated Kiro POST on 502, 503, or 504 without establishing whether the first send was processed. A pre-output check limits client-visible duplication, but does not establish upstream idempotency or contain duplicate upstream work.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected scope is authenticated Kiro outbound requests for a logical turn, including its nested retries and fallback. A client request can reach an additional regional host and consume another bounded physical send; the evidence does not establish exposure to an arbitrary host.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No credential disclosure or authorization bypass is established. The supported conditional failure path is a gateway response or account-selection change causing an extra authenticated send whose payload or upstream effect may differ from the intended continuation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider egress and account revalidation remain at the physical dispatch boundary, including through the unpaced executor. The retry path also checks caller abort and reserves a send before network dispatch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Send limits and pre-output rotation constrain retry volume, but neither proves that a prior POST had no upstream effect. The shared retry contract treats ambiguous non-idempotent sends as a separate replay-safety decision.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind dispatch-time credential refresh to the logical fallback payload, not only the initial wire request; separately establish a replay-safety rule for gateway rotation of Kiro POSTs.

| D020-G1 | **Decision: one executor, pinned by tests.** Every Kiro physical send uses `ctx.executor`. Its `dispatchOverride` rebuilds only when the account selection changed after build, and it rebuilds for the *current* account (`src/server/responses/request-transport.ts:408-479`), so credentials cannot mix; the cost is that an alternate-host or completion-fallback leg sent after such a switch becomes a canonical send of the rebuilt request. Devin's inner ladder already accepts the same contract. New tests in the 020 sibling file: `an account switch before the alternate leg sends the rebuilt request for the new account` and `an account switch before the completion fallback never sends the old account's bearer`, both driving a stub executor with a dispatch override. |

P1 Badge Move the unreleased credential analysis out of devlog

This added _plan entry publishes pre-release credential-mixing analysis, dispatch-override behavior, and an old-bearer test plan while the corresponding fix is still under review. Because devlog/ is tracked and public, move these working notes to .tmp/ or other scratch space and publish only the shipped outcome (under _fin/ if a retrospective is needed); the repository explicitly prohibits unreleased security findings and pre-disclosure patch plans in devlog/.

Synchronize the Kiro sections in the remaining locale pages.

The Kiro sections in ja, ko, ru, and zh-cn only describe generic bounded retries. They omit the new canonical-endpoint fallback for HTTP 502/503/504 responses, the 504 header deadline, and fixed public text for final HTTP 5xx responses.

Update these four sections to match docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/adapters.md:335-344.

Remove the “sıradan” qualifier.

The English source states that all other service errors are not replayed. The Turkish text limits this statement to “ordinary other service errors,” which can imply that other service errors may be replayed. Remove the qualifier to keep the translation aligned with the canonical English documentation.

Map only the Kiro deadline to HTTP 504.

If executor.unpacedFetch ?? executor rejects a TimeoutError while the caller signal is not aborted, the wrapper rethrows that executor error. The outer catch then maps it to the fixed 504 response because it checks only error.name. This can hide a distinct executor failure and violates the Kiro contract, which limits this mapping to the header deadline.

Make the completion-fallback test assert the actual dispatched body and bearer.

The executor computes physicalBodies and bearers at tests/providers/kiro/kiro-transport-parity.test.ts:254-257. It does not derive them from the init values sent by the adapter. The assertions at lines 263-264 therefore pass even if the fallback sends the old account's body or bearer.

Change the fixture to mutate the shared AdapterRequest and headers through the dispatch-override path, then assert the body and authorization values received by the second executor call. The existing test at lines 166-185 checks actual init.body and headers for gateway rotation, but it does not exercise the completion-fallback path. If the dispatch override cannot be included in this fixture, rename this test so it claims only executor retention, masking, and duplicate-output behavior.

Verification follow-up for head 579a82eab0:

  • Hosted Cross-platform CI run 36255920039: test 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and gates passed.
  • A full bun run test in a clean worktree outside ~/.codex ran concurrently with the focused receipt run and a live local proxy; it reported timeouts in unrelated suites (Cursor effort rows, Claude Desktop, chat-native). The one I re-ran alone, tests/responses/chat-completions-endpoint.test.ts, passed 122/122, so those are load failures, and hosted CI is the full-suite evidence for this head.

라인 - src/adapters/kiro-retry.ts 365줄.

라인 - src/adapters/kiro/adapter.ts 241줄. 그 사이 계정이 바뀌면 src/server/responses/request-transport.ts 458줄이 원래 질문을 다시 만들고, 479줄이 그 본문을 보냅니다.

라인 - src/adapters/kiro/stream.ts 1103줄.
