Closes #1787 — AI-4170

What & why

A hosted Pi agent could not ask its viewer anything: Pi blocks a turn on stdin until a host answers an extension's select/confirm/input/editor dialog, and the daemon never answered, only adding a "hosted sessions cannot answer" note (also for display-only calls like setStatus). Dialogs now go through the same elicitation route ACP agents use, so the web UI and the desktop app show them as question cards, and the answer goes back to Pi as its extension_ui_response.

Where to look

A dialog raised by the launch prompt arrives before the server has bound the session, and the server refuses an interaction for an unbound session. IAcpTranscriptSource.ServerBindSettled() (a default no-op) is called once the bind succeeds, fails, or will never happen (a silent agent); Pi holds dialogs until then. Pi's own timeout withdraws the card; an unattended reviewer still reaps on a dialog.

Verification

  • Real pi --mode rpc 0.85.1 driven by hand with a probe extension: select/confirm/input requests, and the response shapes built here, round-trip.
  • Live: a hosted Pi agent on kurrent.kcap.ai running the probe. Before the bind wait, the launch-time dialog failed with "No agent registered". With it, Pi recorded select="Green" confirm=true input="the quick brown fox…" answered from the web UI and the desktop app.
  • dotnet publish of the daemon: no IL warnings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added interactive dialogs for Pi sessions, supporting selections, confirmations, text input, and editor prompts.
    • Dialog responses are sent back to Pi, with cancellation when unavailable, unanswered, invalid, or timed out.
    • Notifications now appear as system messages only when they contain content.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Dialog interactions now wait for connection setup to complete before prompting.
    • Dialog handling no longer blocks other session activity while awaiting a response.

Pi blocks a turn on stdin until a dialog is answered, and a launch prompt's
dialog arrives before the server has bound the session, so dialogs wait for
the bind instead of being refused.

📝 Walkthrough

Pi dialog requests now map to ACP interactions and return Pi-compatible responses. Runtime handling waits for server binding, applies Pi timeouts and cancellation, and writes responses. Notifications remain transcript system notes; other UI requests produce no envelopes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f6f57

Pi dialogs now run through the elicitation route, and unbound or private sessions cancel dialogs locally. One narrow gap remains: if the server refuses re-registration after an initial successful bind, a later Pi dialog prompt could still be sent to the server. This is unlikely and does not block the main workflow, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f6f57

Dialogs can continue sending content after a previously accepted session becomes server-silent. Initial binding checks and cancellation limit exposure, but they do not revoke earlier permission to send. The demonstrated risk is session-scoped; disclosure to unauthorized viewers has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new dialog route treats historical binding success as continuing authority. After re-registration refusal makes an agent server-silent, its running Pi process can still submit dialog prompts, options, and editor prefill through the interaction callback. Refusal cancels the transcript-forwarding token, not the runtime token used by dialogs. This introduces an outbound path beyond the existing no-send boundary; remote acceptance or unauthorized viewer access is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated path requires influence over a running Pi dialog stream, a prior successful bind, and subsequent registration refusal. It can send that session's dialog content over the authenticated daemon connection. The bridge supplies runtime-owned identifiers rather than accepting target identities from the dialog. Arbitrary-session access, cross-tenant exposure, and privilege escalation are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained findings converge on one newly exposed path: child dialog content passes a permanently successful bind gate and reaches a direct hub invocation after local registration refusal. The refusal handler deliberately leaves the process running while stopping other outbound channels. This violates the local server-silence invariant even if the remote service later rejects the interaction.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shared connection path retries ownership-not-ready errors a bounded number of times, providing evidence of an expected remote ownership control. It does not check current per-agent registration before sending the payload. Server-side enforcement and cleanup were unavailable for inspection, so remote rejection, persistence, and viewer delivery after revocation remain unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Positive Pi timeouts and runtime termination cancel dialog waits. Cancellation after obtaining a server request ID attempts best-effort remote resolution while the connection remains live. These contain ordinary abandoned interactions, but registration refusal cancels a different token and therefore does not trigger the same cleanup for pending Pi dialogs.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate initial binding readiness from revocable interaction authority. Tie admission and pending-dialog cancellation to current registration ownership, with ordering that prevents a concurrent refusal from admitting another send. Validate successful-bind-to-refusal transitions, including pending decisions and reconnect races.

Explanation

Issue [#1787] has no explicit acceptance criteria. The PR addresses its stated problem by routing hosted Pi select, confirm, input, and editor dialogs through ACP elicitation and returning extension_ui_response messages. The bind-settlement and cancellation paths cover sessions that bind, fail to bind, or never bind. The summary also reports focused automated tests for routing, response shapes, binding, cancellation, and timeout behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue [#1787]. The callback wiring, Pi dialog conversion, bind-settlement handling, cancellation behavior, notify handling, and related tests support hosted Pi interaction and session reliability. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

High-Level Assessment

Reusing ACP elicitation is the best fit because both viewer clients already support its question cards and decisions. A Pi-specific viewer route would duplicate that interaction path; keeping dialog handling off the event pump and gated on binding addresses the two principal lifecycle constraints.

Action required

1. Private agents send dialogs to the server ✓ Resolved
Description
ServerBindSettled() releases Pi's dialog wait for server-silent agents, but AnswerDialogAsync
then calls the server interaction route without checking why the gate opened. For a private agent,
this sends its dialog title and editor prefill through AcpRequestInteraction even though the
orchestrator excludes that agent from per-agent server calls.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/AgentOrchestrator.cs[3083]

+            if (agent.IsServerSilent) start.Transcript?.ServerBindSettled();
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent privacy-routing precedents support preventing private agents from entering server interaction
paths.

PR-#1314

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The orchestrator defines server-silent agents to include private agents and releases their wait
without starting transcript forwarding. Pi then builds an interaction containing the prompt and
calls the server method that invokes AcpRequestInteraction.

2. Timed-out dialogs can leave cards open ✗ Dismissed
Description
AnswerDialogAsync applies Pi’s timeout to the initial AcpRequestInteraction invocation, but
ServerConnection only cancels a server interaction after it has received the request ID. If the
timeout fires after kcap-server creates the card but before the invocation returns its ID, Pi
receives a cancellation while the server retains the unanswered card until its own interaction
timeout.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Harness/Pi/PiRpcHostedAgentRuntime.cs[444]

+            using var cts = CancellationTokenSource.CreateLinkedTokenSource(_ownerToken, timeoutCts.Token);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent runtime timeout precedents accept cancellation-scope fixes preventing orphaned asynchronous
waits.

PR-#1549

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new linked timeout can cancel the creation invocation. The daemon’s abandonment cleanup is
reached only during the subsequent decision wait, whereas the server persists and broadcasts the
interaction before returning its ID and has a separate, longer timeout.

3. Large Pi selections never reach viewers ✓ Resolved
Description
PiDialogBridge.SelectOptions materializes every label in an extension’s options array, and
ToInteraction forwards them without count or label-length bounds, unlike the bounded ACP
elicitation classifier. With 33 or more choices, kcap-server rejects the card and the daemon cancels
Pi’s dialog; very large or lengthy selections also produce oversized interaction payloads.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Harness/Pi/PiDialogBridge.cs[R31-32]

+                if (SelectOptions(request) is not { Length: > 0 } labels) return null;
+                options = [.. labels.Select((label, i) => new AcpInteractionOption(i.ToString(CultureInfo.InvariantCulture), label, null))];
Relevance

●●● Strong

Accepted option-validation precedents support bounding or rejecting malformed interaction choices.

PR-#1755

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The selection mapping materializes the full incoming array, and the bridge constructs and forwards
an option for every label. Kcap-server rejects interaction requests with more than 32 options, while
the existing ACP classifier bounds its raw schema, option count, and option size.

Description

5. Desktop viewers cannot enter editor text ✗ Dismissed
Description
ToInteraction routes an editor dialog as an ordinary optionless question, whose desktop answer
field is single-line and whose submit path trims the entered value. A viewer editing multi-line
content cannot enter newlines through that field, and leading or trailing whitespace is removed
before ToResponse sends the value to Pi.

Relevance

●● Moderate

Multiline editor semantics and whitespace preservation require subjective UI-contract changes;

6. Viewers cannot retain editor prefill ✗ Dismissed
Description
ToInteraction puts an editor's prefill in the question prompt rather than in an editable answer
value, and truncates the prompt at 8 KB. The desktop question card starts with an empty answer
field, so accepting the existing text requires retyping it; any prefill beyond the cap is not shown
to the viewer.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Harness/Pi/PiDialogBridge.cs[R45-46]

+ case "editor":

Relevance

●● Moderate

Prefill preservation is a cross-surface behavior change without a closely matching precedent.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The bridge only embeds prefill in Prompt and caps that string. The desktop card initializes its

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The changed test file adds a decorative section-heading comment without behavioral guidance, which
conflicts with the requirement to restrict comments to non-obvious, behavior-critical constraints.

Qodo item 7 (// ---- Dialogs ----): not changed. Every section of PiRpcHostedAgentRuntimeTests carries the same heading (// ---- Ready barrier ----, // ---- Stopping ----, …); dropping this one alone would make the file inconsistent.

Finding 7 is still based on the configured rule, which treats section-only comments as non-actionable even when similar headings exist elsewhere. Your consistency rationale is valid, but this comment was not changed, so it remains an open informational finding—not an implementation defect.

If these headings are an accepted project convention, you can adjust or disable the rule here: https://app.qodo.ai/rules/2762993?state=active
