Part of #1320 — AI-3508 (not closing: the local lane for hosted PTY Codex is still to come)

What & why

The desktop's subagent rows only ever appeared for Claude, because only Claude's chat rules start a row. A subagent's start record, which the server writes for every harness the watcher handles and an ACP runtime journals locally, now starts a row keyed by its agent id wherever the vendor's own records start none. Its completion record ends the row. Claude's rules declare that they start their own rows, so for Claude the record still only names the transcript row and never adds a second one.

Where to look

  • TranscriptChat.SubagentStart and IChatDisplayRules.StartsSubagentRows decide between starting a row and naming one.
  • SessionRuns.OpensSubagents: on the local lane only Claude Code files a subagent's transcript beside its parent's, so a non-Claude row shows but does not offer to open.

Verification

  • TranscriptChatCanonicalTests 12/12, EnvelopeJournalProjectionTests 10/10, SessionRunsTests 48/48.
  • Neighbours: ClaudeChatRulesTests 53/53, CodexChatRulesTests 15/15, RemoteTranscriptFeedTests 19/19, WorkContextViewModelTests 78/78, SubagentPaneViewModelTests 3/3, LocalTranscriptFeedTests 4/4, ChatTranscriptSourceTests 3/3.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Subagent activity is displayed as named, trackable runs with accurate start and completion states.
    • Subagent runs can be opened or restricted based on the active agent and transcript availability.
    • Journaled subagent events preserve valid timestamps, agent names, and identifiers.
    • Agent-only activity is supported for vendors that manage their own subagent rows.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Completed subagent runs now correctly reduce the active run count and display a completed state.
    • Separate starts by the same agent are tracked as distinct runs.

Claude's own records already start its rows, so for Claude the record only names one; a lane that cannot read a subagent's transcript shows the row without offering to open it.

📝 Walkthrough

Subagent start records can create named run rows or identify vendor-created rows. Journal projection maps subagent start and completion envelopes to run signals. Session settings control whether rows are openable based on Claude transcript availability.

Changes: Subagent run lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transcript subagent start signals
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/TranscriptChat.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Harness/Claude/ClaudeChatRules.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/TranscriptChatCanonicalTests.cs
IChatDisplayRules now indicates whether vendor records start subagent rows. When they do not, a subagent start creates a named row and then identifies it. Claude rules indicate that vendor records start rows. Tests cover Claude, Codex, and Gemini behavior.
Journal subagent signals
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/EnvelopeJournalProjection.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/EnvelopeJournalProjectionTests.cs
ProjectWithInputs returns projected envelopes, user-message text, and run signals. Subagent start and completion envelopes with agent IDs produce signals. Valid round-trip timestamps are parsed; otherwise, the received time is used.
Session row openability
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/RunRow.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/SessionRuns.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/WorkspaceViewModel.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/SessionRunsTests.cs
CanOpen also requires the row to be openable. SessionRuns.OpensSubagents updates existing rows and initializes new ones. Workspace presence enables the setting only for Claude agents with non-envelope transcripts. Tests cover row completion, repeated starts, and openability changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7bc85

A narrow repeated-start case can hide a subagent row; make each start identity unique before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7bc85

The change broadens subagent visibility while tightening local transcript-opening eligibility. No access-control bypass was established, but verification of remote transcript authorization and unusual event-ordering cases remains incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Newly visible remote rows can initiate user-selected reads through the existing session-and-agent event reader. Local envelope-backed rows are excluded from filesystem opening. The remote reader uses the configured server and leased HTTP client; server-side tenant and subagent ownership enforcement was not verified in this pass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The local opening change narrows access relative to the PR base: it preserves the existing Claude path construction and feed sink but additionally rejects envelope journals. Row eligibility is advisory; the opening handler repeats the current metadata check, so a stale or initially optimistic row alone cannot bypass that gate.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Run rows are nonpersistent UI-thread state, cleared for reconstruction on feed reset. Projection batches refresh once, and remote subagent reads retain page limits, polling intervals and cancellation. These mechanisms bound individual reads and support reconstruction, but do not establish a total bound on retained rows.

Show subagent rows across supported harnesses

✨ Enhancement 🧪 Tests 🕐 40+ Minutes

Grey Divider

AI Description

• Start and finish subagent rows from lifecycle records when a harness does not create its own rows.
• Preserve Claude’s existing rows without duplicates and disable opening rows whose transcripts are
 unavailable locally.
• Cover canonical events, ACP journals, row lifecycle, and opening behavior with tests.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Normalize journal records into canonical events
  • ➕ Could route both record sources through one projection path.
  • ➖ Requires a conversion layer for already-normalized envelopes and risks changing journal display semantics.

Recommendation: Keep the PR’s shared SubagentStart signal helper and direct journal projection. It reuses the row-start policy without forcing ACP envelopes through a canonical-event conversion.

Remediation recommended

1. Local non-Claude sessions miss rows ✗ Dismissed
Description
TranscriptChat. For returns no projection for vendors outside Claude, Codex, and MistralVibe, so
the new SubagentStarted branch never receives local transcript events for Gemini, OpenCode, or
Cursor. When those sessions use the vendor transcript format, ChatTranscriptSource.Resolve passes
that null through and no local feed can supply the watcher start signal, leaving their rows and
counts absent.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/TranscriptChat.cs[79]

+            return new([], [], started.AgentId is { Length: > 0 } agentId ? SubagentStart(agentId, started.AgentType, evt.Timestamp, rules) : []);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent TranscriptChat correctness findings and vendor-specific routing changes were accepted;
missing projections leave supported harnesses without rows.

PR-#1726
PR-#1660

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The new SubagentStarted conversion in TranscriptChat.Project can only run when a local vendor
projection produces a canonical event. The transcript registry supports only Claude, Codex, and
Mistral Vibe, while the source resolver returns no projection for other vendor-format sessions; the
changed code therefore does not provide the required local source for Gemini, OpenCode, or Cursor.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Local non-Claude sessions do not receive subagent start signals because the new canonical-event handling only runs after a vendor transcript projection has been selected, while several supported harnesses have no registered projection or local watcher-discovery feed.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/TranscriptChat.cs[79-79]
- src/Capacitor.Models.Transcripts/TranscriptProjection.cs[16-23]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTranscriptSource.cs[13-18]

## Recommended Fix
Provide a local source for watcher-discovered subagents for every supported non-Claude harness, or register vendor transcript projections that emit the canonical start and completion events. Ensure the local lane applies those signals to `SessionRuns` so rows and collapsed counts appear consistently.

2. New test comments repeat their assertions ✗ Dismissed
Description
The added comments above the new session-run and journal tests restate the test names and the
assertions that immediately follow them instead of documenting a constraint or non-obvious behavior.
Future readers must update duplicated prose when the test behavior changes, while the test code
already expresses the same facts.
Code

test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/SessionRunsTests.cs[R201-202]

+ /// A vendor with no subagent rows of its own gets one from the start record: named, openable, ended by its
+ /// completion, and still one row when the record is replayed.
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent precedents consistently accept removing test comments that merely restate names and
assertions.

PR-#1221
PR-#834

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The checklist requires comments to document non-obvious, behavior-critical constraints rather than
restating what nearby code clearly does. These newly added comments summarize the test outcomes
already expressed by their method names and assertions.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a unique identity for each non-vendor subagent start.

SubagentStart builds agent:{agentId}:{at.UtcTicks}. Two valid starts for the same agent can have the same effective timestamp. Journal events can also use the same receivedAt fallback. SessionRuns.Start then ignores the later start because _byCall already contains that key. The later start therefore has no row.

Make the start identity unique at this shared boundary instead of using the timestamp alone. Preserve replay deduplication by deriving it from the start event identity.
