AI-3821 — no GitHub issue

What & why

A bash ls was classified as a file search, so a group of listings and a file read said "Searched files, read a file" and each ls row read "Searched files ls -la". ls now counts as a command: the group says "Ran commands, read a file" and the row "Ran command ls -la".

Where to look

The kind chip and header of a lone ls call read "Command" rather than "Search".

Verification

  • ToolSummaryTests (61), ChatTabViewModelTests (214), ChatTabViewSmokeTests (88): 0 failed.
  • Headless render of an ls -la src + ls /missing + Read group shows "Ran commands, read a file".

Walkthrough

Tool-call rows now distinguish commands, paths, and searches. They support expandable command and result content. Results have line and character limits, truncation notices, and error fallback text. The view model, view, and tests cover the new behavior.

Changes: Tool Call Details

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extract and format tool details
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TextElision.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolDetail.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolSummary.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ToolDetailTests.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ToolSummaryTests.cs
Path values use tail elision with a 56-character limit. Other details retain middle elision. Tool inputs expose path and command information. File-listing hints map to Command.
Store command and result state
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs
Tool-call items store command and path metadata, result content, truncation notices, and error state. Result handling passes both payload and error status.
Render and validate expanded tool calls

Merge Risk: Low · up to 76c2b

Some failed commands can expand without an explanation, and some array-form commands can lack expanded command text. These bounded display issues do not otherwise block merging.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 76c2b

The expanded content remains within the existing chat view and is displayed as plain text with size limits. The reviewed changes do not add tool permissions, execution capabilities, or external recipients. No material security risk was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure increase is greater visibility of existing transcript content to the current chat viewer. The inspected expansion path adds no recipient or tool authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Expansion remains inside the tool-group visibility boundary. Pending-question suppression still applies to the group, and permission answers remain owned by the separate permission card.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Results update the matched pending tool item. Removing that pending entry prevents repeated results from updating the settled item; feed changes and resets clear ownership maps, while generation checks reject stale feed updates. These existing controls also contain the newly displayed result state.

High-Level Assessment

Keep the existing tool-call and group view models as the owners of row state: this adds expansion without a separate result viewer or a new grouping pipeline. Those alternatives add complexity without a clear benefit for this scope.

Action required

1. Opened results show only the first ~15 lines ✓ Resolved
Description
SelectableTextBlock.toolBody caps wrapped result text at MaxHeight=240, but the expanded row has
no scroll container. When a result exceeds that height, later lines cannot be reached even though
SetResult retains up to 200 lines and the notice says “Showing the first 200 lines.”
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[R89-95]

+        <Style Selector="SelectableTextBlock.toolBody">
+            <Setter Property="FontSize" Value="12.5" />

●●● Strong

The view hides retained result lines without scrolling, contradicting the promised 200-line expanded
output.

PR-#1189
PR-#1087

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The style limits the wrapped, 12.5pt result text to 240px, while the expanded StackPanel places
the SelectableTextBlock directly in the item template without a ScrollViewer. Because
ShownResultLines is 200, the view model can retain substantially more text than fits within that
height.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The expanded tool result retains up to 200 lines, but its text block is capped at 240px without scrolling, leaving later lines inaccessible.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[89-95]
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[254-260]

## Recommended Fix
Remove `MaxHeight` from the `toolBody` text style. Wrap the expanded result `SelectableTextBlock` in a `ScrollViewer` with `MaxHeight=240` and `VerticalScrollBarVisibility=Auto`, then verify that the last retained line is reachable.

2. Some paths starting with an emoji crash row building ✓ Resolved
Description
In PathTail, a leading high surrogate can decrement head from 1 to 0, after which the head < 1
branch requests max - 1 characters from a tail only max - 2 characters long. A path beginning
with a supplementary Unicode character and having a 54-character final parent-and-file suffix
triggers ArgumentOutOfRangeException while a tool-call event is projected, so its row is not
built.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TextElision.cs[R26-28]

+        var head = max - tail.Length - 1;
+        if (head > 0 && char.IsHighSurrogate(text[head - 1])) head--;
+        if (head < 1) return "…" + tail[^(max - 1)..];
Relevance

●●● Strong

A valid supplementary-character path can throw during row construction; concrete crash bugs are
typically accepted.

PR-#1530
PR-#1665

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
When tail.Length is max - 2, the calculation gives head a value of 1; the leading-surrogate
check can decrement it to 0. The resulting head < 1 branch slices max - 1 characters from the
shorter tail, which is out of range. ToolDetail.From invokes this helper for path keys and
catches only JSON parsing errors.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A surrogate-boundary adjustment can reduce `head` to zero, causing `PathTail` to slice beyond the available suffix during tool-call projection.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TextElision.cs[20-29]

## Recommended Fix
When `head < 1`, return `"…" + tail`: the tail is already shorter than `max - 1` and fits the path budget. Also avoid starting `text[^(max-1)..]` on a low surrogate. Add a test with a leading supplementary Unicode character and a suffix that leaves a one-character head.

3. The commit history buries the change ⊘ Outdated
Description
The first commit body contains more than five non-empty lines, a test-name inventory, verification
headings, and an unchecked task list. Reviewers must sift through extensive process detail to
identify the behavioral constraints and consequences of the change.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[R106-107]

+ ToolCardKind cardKind = ToolCardKind.None, string? inputJson = null, string? command = null,
+        bool detailIsPath = false) : ChatItemViewModel {
Relevance

●●● Strong

Explicit commit-message rule violation; the body contains process inventory rather than concise
behavioral constraints.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The first commit body exceeds the five-line limit and includes an inventory of test files plus
verification checklist text, contrary to the commit-message scope and focus requirements.

Rule 2897971: Limit and focus commit message bodies on non-obvious constraints or consequences

4. Non-path details lose trimming when the input has a path field ✓ Resolved
Description
ShowsPath checks the input JSON on its own terms, while the displayed detail may come from
ForKey, FirstOrAny or the tool-search formatter, which never run PathTail. A catalogued or
foreign tool whose input has a path/file_path field gets the path class, so its 80-character
detail is shown with no trimming and gets clipped.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[R1367-1368]

+                        var item = new ToolCallItem(name, detail, category, label, entry?.Card ?? ToolCardKind.None, e.ToolInputJson,
+                            ToolDetail.CommandOf(e.ToolInputJson), ToolDetail.ShowsPath(e.ToolInputJson));
Relevance

●●● Strong

Path styling is derived from different data than displayed detail, causing incorrect clipping
behavior.

PR-#1460
PR-#1189

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
detail is picked from four sources, and only ToolDetail.From uses PathTail. ShowsPath is
called for every tool no matter which source produced detail, and DetailIsPath turns on the path
style, which sets TextTrimming=None.

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[1357-1368]
src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolDetail.cs[65-75]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
DetailIsPath is computed separately from how the detail was built, so details that weren't cut with PathTail still lose trimming.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[1362-1368]

## Recommended Fix
Pass `entry is null && !isToolSearch && foreignLabel is null && ToolDetail.ShowsPath(e.ToolInputJson)`. A cleaner option is to have ToolDetail.From return whether it used PathTail.

View medium (3)
5. Multi-line commands lose their later lines ✓ Resolved
Description
CommandOf reads through RawForKey, whose FirstLine call discards everything after the first
newline before the expanded command body is built. For heredocs, multi-line scripts, and
backslash-continued commands, the body shows only a partial command; if that first line matches the
row detail and the result is empty, HasCommandBody is false and no expand control appears.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolDetail.cs[R79-80]

+        var command = RawForKey(inputJson, "command");
+        if (command.Length == 0) command = RawForKey(inputJson, "cmd");
Relevance

●●● Strong

First-line extraction makes multiline commands inaccessible, directly violating the expanded-row
behavior described by the change.

PR-#1504
PR-#1665

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
RawForKey ends with FirstLine(s), which cuts at the first \r or \n; CommandOf uses that
value, so its 2000-character cap cannot preserve later lines. The expanded view binds CommandText,
while the expand control depends on HasCommandBody or a result, explaining why a first line equal
to Detail with an empty result leaves the remaining command inaccessible.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description

- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolDetail.cs[78-83]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[185-202]

## Recommended Fix
Parse the JSON and read the full trimmed `command`/`cmd` string without applying `FirstLine`, then apply the 2000-character cap to retain a bounded full command for the expanded body. Test a multi-line command with an empty result, including the case where its first line matches the row detail.

6. Huge single-line output is kept in full ✓ Resolved
Description
SetResult only limits the number of lines, so a single-line result (minified JSON, base64, a long
log line) is stored in ResultText uncut. It is held for every tool call in the session and laid
out in a wrapping text block when the row is opened. The 4096-character check only adds a notice and
doesn't shorten the text.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[R233-240]

+            if (lines > ShownResultLines) {
+                body = body[..newline];
+                notice = $"Showing the first {ShownResultLines} lines.";
+            } else if (body.EndsWith('…') || body.Length >= 4096) {
+                notice = "Output truncated.";
+            }

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[220-247]

7. Long paths lose their file name when the pane is narrow ✓ Resolved
Description
The .toolLine.path style turns off TextTrimming but doesn't enable wrapping. When the pane is
narrower than the 56-character PathTail output, the end of the path is clipped, and that end is
the parent folder and file name the change is meant to keep. The old middle-ellipsis trimmer kept
the end visible at any width.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[R73-75]

+        <Style Selector="SelectableTextBlock.toolLine.path">
+            <Setter Property="TextTrimming" Value="None" />

Relevance

●●● Strong

Disabling trimming without wrapping clips the filename in narrow panes; comparable overflow findings
were accepted.

PR-#1189
PR-#1087

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The base toolLine style uses MiddleEllipsis trimming and no wrap. The new path style sets
TextTrimming=None, and the detail sits in a * column. PathTail limits length to 56 characters, not
to the pixel width available.

src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[55-75]

## Issue description
With trimming turned off, a path wider than the column is clipped on the right, which hides the file name.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml[73-75]

Informational

8. Untruncated results labelled as truncated ✓ Resolved
Description
SetResult adds "Output truncated." whenever the result is 4096 characters or longer, or ends with
'…', even when the full text is shown. It also says "Showing the first 200 lines." for exactly 200
lines with a trailing newline, where only the empty final line is dropped.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[R231-237]

+                if (lines == ShownResultLines + 1) { newline = i; break; }

Relevance

●●● Strong

Boundary logic mislabels complete results; similar truncation edge cases were accepted.

PR-#1665
PR-#1530

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
lines counts newlines + 1, so 200 lines that each end in '\n' reach 201 at the last newline.
body.Length >= 4096 is a guess about upstream truncation, not a check of it.

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[220-247]

9. Group preview skips its 56-character cap ✓ Resolved
Description
PeekDetail returns LineText unchanged whenever it contains '…'. That includes the 80-character
Middle/End cuts used for commands, catalogued tools and tool search, and any text that literally
contains an ellipsis, so the folded-group preview can run past its 56-character budget.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs[R411-413]

+        var line = first.LineText;
+        if (line.Contains('…')) return line;

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs:
- Around line 236-237: Update the truncation logic surrounding the body wrapping
in the relevant chat-item method to cap content by both line count and character
count, ensuring large single-line results are shortened before being passed to
the tool-body control. Set “Output truncated.” only when characters or lines
were actually removed, while preserving complete smaller results.

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/TextElision.cs:
- Line 28: Update the short-tail fallback in the text-elision logic around head
so that when head is less than 1 it prefixes the ellipsis to the entire tail,
rather than slicing max - 1 characters. Preserve the existing behavior for other
head values and ensure the fallback remains valid when tail is shorter than the
requested slice.

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ToolDetail.cs:
- Around line 79-80: Update the command extraction in the ToolDetail view-model
so CommandOf receives the complete value from command or cmd, including
newlines, without applying FirstLine/compact formatting. Preserve first-line
extraction only for the compact row detail, and keep the existing fallback from
command to cmd.

Review comments at @src/Capacitor.App/Views/ChatTabView.axaml:
- Line 94: Update the expanded result layout around the MaxHeight setter so the
result text is wrapped in a height-limited ScrollViewer. Remove the height limit
from the text control itself, preserve the existing expanded-result content and
SetResult behavior, and ensure long results can scroll within the constrained
area.

🟡 Minor · Apply the failure fallback after trimming the result. · ChatItems.cs:230-233

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatItems.cs:230-233
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply the failure fallback after trimming the result.

If a failed tool returns only \r or \n, TrimEnd makes body empty after the fallback check. HasResult then becomes false, so the expanded row shows neither the error heading nor an explanation. Trim first, then apply "The tool failed." when the result is empty.

carriage returns and newlines before checking whether the result is empty. Then
apply the error fallback text “The tool failed.” when error is true and the
trimmed body is empty, preserving non-error empty results as null.
