app: Show uninstall progress immediately after confirmation (#1981) - #1982
Show focused uninstall progress immediately after confirmation and hide the normal app windows while shutdown finishes. This gives visible feedback during teardown instead of leaving uninstall looking unresponsive. Explicitly activate the relaunched uninstall window as well.
Where to look
The handoff window blocks user dismissal while allowing application shutdown. Register uninstall-on-exit only after the handoff window opens successfully. Destructive cleanup still runs in the relaunched copy after safe teardown.
Verification
dotnet run --project test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit.csproj --no-restore --disable-build-servers -p:BuildInParallel=false -- --treenode-filter '/*/*/UninstallWindowTests/*' --maximum-parallel-tests 1 — 1 test passed, covering immediate window replacement, activation and blocked dismissal.
git diff --check passed. Actual macOS foreground behavior has not been manually verified. GitHub-only tracking; no Linear issue.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Uninstall now displays a dedicated handoff screen with status text and an activity indicator while the transition starts.
The handoff screen replaces the previous application windows and remains visible until the transition is complete.
Bug Fixes
Prevented the handoff screen from being dismissed while the uninstall transition is in progress.
The uninstall flow now shows and activates a handoff progress window before shutdown. The handoff hides the previous windows and cannot be dismissed during handoff. A UI test checks the window state and close behavior.
The window shows handoff content and progress, hides the previous windows, and activates itself. Closing is canceled during handoff. The test checks visibility, activation, content, and close behavior.
kurrent-io/kcap-cli#1843 — The handoff remains visible during shutdown, but this change does not establish changes to cleanup sequencing.
kurrent-io/kcap-cli#1786 — This change modifies the handoff and relaunch behavior in the macOS app-menu uninstall flow.

Merge Risk: High · up to 99453
Uninstall can stop at the non-dismissible handoff window instead of completing cleanup; the close predicate must be fixed before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 99453
The existing confirmation and cleanup sequence is preserved, with no identified expansion of uninstall authority. The main risk is incomplete recovery if replacing the normal windows fails partway through. End-to-end platform shutdown behavior remains unverified.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: Handoff setup has no rollback after partial window mutation. If hiding a window or activating the handoff throws after presentation, the caller reports failure and resets the relaunch guard without closing the handoff or restoring previously visible windows. Uninstall has not been registered, but the application can remain in a misleading, non-dismissible progress state. The failure consequence is inferred; no platform exception was reproduced.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The existing confirmation describes removal of all local kcap background services, settings and sign-in, and the app, with optional permanent deletion of local-server sessions. Hosted sessions are described as retained. The PR does not change this request construction or its target-selection flags.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The affected relaunch method is wired to the existing platform-specific uninstall action. User confirmation and relaunch eligibility still precede the new handoff. The new call receives desktop windows, not command text; Process.Start continues to receive the request built from existing uninstall flags.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing shutdown protocol cancels its first pass, drains and disposes application resources, marks shutdown confirmed, and requests shutdown again. The new handoff cancels WindowClosing events; whether the platform shutdown path presents that close reason was not established by the available source or test, so a shutdown-blocking defect is not asserted.

Explanation
Issue #1981 requires immediate focused progress, hidden normal windows, explicit activation, and safe teardown before destructive cleanup. UninstallWindow.ShowHandoff creates the handoff window, hides RunContent, shows HandoffContent, hides prior windows, and calls Activate(). OnClosing blocks user dismissal during handoff and during an active uninstall. App.axaml.cs calls ShowHandoff before registering the uninstall exit handler, and RunUninstallMode activates the relaunched window. The supplied change summary keeps destructive cleanup in the relaunched copy and reports no teardown removal. UninstallWindowTests verifies window replacement, activation, content visibility, and blocked dismissal. The direct App wiring and AXAML details rely on the supplied change summary because the repository diff was unavailable and the App blob read was truncated.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reported changes remain within issue #1981. ShowHandoff, handoff content, activation, dismissal blocking, App wiring, and the focused unit test directly support the requested uninstall handoff behavior. No unrelated files, refactors, or behavior changes are reported.

High-Level Assessment
The short-lived handoff window provides feedback without moving cleanup into the original process, which must release its resources first. Keeping the existing windows visible would not communicate progress; running cleanup before shutdown would undermine the established teardown boundary.

1. A failed handoff starts uninstall on quit✗ Dismissed
Description
RelaunchForUninstallAsync registers the uninstall Exit handler before calling ShowHandoff, but
its catch neither unregisters that handler nor clears the relaunch guard. If window creation,
showing, hiding, or activation throws, the app reports a failure and rejects another uninstall
attempt, yet a later ordinary quit still launches the uninstall copy.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The new call can throw before TryShutdown; the surrounding catch handles the exception but
relaunchRegistered is already true, so the finally block does not reset _uninstallRelaunching.
The installed Exit callback remains active for a subsequent quit.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A handoff-window failure leaves the uninstall-on-exit callback registered and prevents another uninstall attempt, even though shutdown was never requested.
## Fix Focus Areas

- src/Capacitor.App/Views/UninstallWindow.axaml.cs[19-27]
## Recommended Fix
Register the exit callback only after the handoff succeeds, or remove it if handoff fails. On failure, restore any windows already hidden, close a partially shown handoff window, and clear the relaunch guard so the user can retry.

RelaunchForUninstallAsync shows the handoff window and then calls desktop.TryShutdown(). The handoff window cancels every WindowClosing event while _handoff is set, including the programmatic close used by the confirmed shutdown pass. This can leave the app open and prevent the desktop.Exit handler from launching the uninstall copy.
Use the repository's user-close condition so only user dismissal is cancelled.
Suggested fix
- if (e.CloseReason == WindowCloseReason.WindowClosing && (_handoff || ViewModel?.State == UninstallRunState.Running)) e.Cancel = true;+ if (e is { CloseReason: WindowCloseReason.WindowClosing, IsProgrammatic: false }+ && (_handoff || ViewModel?.State == UninstallRunState.Running)) e.Cancel = true;
The added test calls progress.Close(), which is programmatic, and expects the window to remain visible. It therefore validates the overbroad cancellation instead of detecting that shutdown must close the handoff window.

ClassicDesktopStyleApplicationLifetime.TryShutdown() calls DoShutdown, which closes windows with WindowCloseReason.ApplicationShutdown (or OSShutdown), not WindowClosing: Avalonia 12.1.4 source. Our handler cancels only WindowClosing, so the confirmed shutdown pass can close the handoff window and reach the uninstall-on-exit callback.
The test does call a programmatic Window.Close(), but that API explicitly uses WindowClosing: source. It exercises a different close reason from application shutdown. The test does not cover the full shutdown path, but this does not establish the reported bug.
Leaving the close condition unchanged; please dismiss this finding.
