Fix macOS CLI PATH setup for users without admin rights - #1960
Standard macOS users who have no writable folder on their login PATH currently hit an admin prompt they cannot complete. Fall back to ~/.local/bin/kcap and add that folder to the supported login shell's profile when the user lacks admin rights, including when an existing system link is off PATH.
The installer discloses the profile line before writing it, rejects unsupported shells and unsafe paths before creating a fallback link, marks the edit, avoids duplicates, and verifies that the freshly resolved command is the installed link using the repository’s host-specific path comparison rules. Profile updates use exclusive access and a content recheck. Interrupted appends can be repaired, while modified blocks and unreadable or busy profiles require retry or manual review. CLI and desktop uninstall preserve other profile content and PATH support needed by another install; desktop confirmation names the eligible profiles.
69 targeted PATH shim/profile tests passed, including the new regressions; 264 targeted CLI setup/shim/uninstall tests passed.
Full Core suite: 5,287 passed, 17 skipped. Full desktop suite: 4,634 passed, 11 skipped, including desktop confirmation/facts and installer-consumer coverage.
Full solution run encountered MemoriesCommandTests.A_new_save_reports_its_near_duplicate_and_pending_promotion in unchanged code: the local culture renders 0.93 as 0,93. The same test passed with LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8. The remaining CLI run stopped producing results and was canceled; the full solution run did not complete.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
On macOS, standard users can install the kcap command in ~/.local/bin and add it to their login-shell PATH without administrator access.
Setup and daemon installation explain the PATH change before proceeding. Unsupported shells or unsafe home paths require manual setup.
Uninstall confirmation identifies shell profiles whose PATH entries may be removed.
Bug Fixes
Uninstall removes the PATH entry it added when removing the associated link, while preserving entries still needed by another installation.
Modified, unreadable, or busy shell profiles are left unchanged; cleanup failures are reported.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
On macOS, the shim installer can create a user-local kcap link and add a marked PATH entry to a supported shell profile when elevation is unavailable. CLI and desktop-app uninstall identify and remove eligible entries, report cleanup failures, and describe the cleanup in their confirmations.

Summary
Shell profile entry and lifecycle src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/Setup/ShellProfileTests.cs
ShellProfile selects supported zsh or bash profiles, adds and removes marked PATH blocks, and checks whether another kcap link still needs an entry. Tests cover profile selection, content preservation, safe PATH values, interrupted writes, and removal.
On macOS, the installer can link under ~/.local/bin and update the shell profile when elevation is unavailable. It verifies which kcap command resolves. CLI setup and daemon-shim commands disclose the profile update; JSON-mode disclosure goes to stderr.
CLI and desktop-app uninstall remove eligible marked profile entries. CLI uninstall previews the entries to be removed. Cleanup errors are reported, and an entry remains when another kcap link needs it.
kurrent-io/kcap-cli#1786: This PR removes eligible PATH links and their owned shell-profile blocks during uninstall, addressing part of the issue’s cleanup objective.
kurrent-io/kcap-cli#1778: This PR changes the shared macOS PATH-link mechanism for users without a writable PATH folder, but does not change the offer trigger or banner behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · up to d56f7
A narrow macOS filesystem case can make installation report success while another kcap remains active; track this for follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to d56f7
The fallback remains user-scoped and retains macOS authorization for privileged installation. However, interrupted cleanup can damage unrelated shell-profile settings, concurrent installation can invalidate cleanup eligibility, and case-sensitive volumes expose a command-verification weakness.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: New profile removal rewrites the live file from offset zero and then truncates it. When user content follows the marked block, interruption or a write/truncation failure can leave shifted content mixed with the old tail, affecting startup settings beyond kcap's block. Exclusive access and pre-write verification do not make this commit recoverable; callers report failures but do not restore the original profile.
Low · security · inferred: On case-sensitive macOS volumes, the new case-insensitive comparison can report Installed when an earlier, case-distinct PATH directory supplies a different kcap. ResolvesToAsync previously used ordinal equality. This weakens the command-identity guarantee and can clear warnings while the competing command still wins; it does not independently grant authority, and requires an existing competing PATH entry.
Low · reliability · inferred: Cleanup eligibility checks the local link separately from removing the profile block. A concurrent install can create its link and accept the existing block after the final eligibility check but before removal, leaving that installation without its required PATH support. The profile lock protects file editing, not the shared link/profile ownership transition.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The new fallback writes under the selected user's home and changes future login-shell command discovery. The separate system-wide installation path still requests macOS administrator authorization; the admin-group check selects a route rather than granting privileges.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The desktop's existing KCAP_APP_CLI_PATH override can select an existing executable that is passed to shim installation. This resolver and caller relationship predate the PR; the new behavior adds a user-local persistence route, but the inspected evidence does not establish attacker control across a new trust boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Destination preflight refuses foreign or unresolvable entries. Privileged linking passes the target as a separate argument, quotes it within AppleScript and uses non-forcing symlink creation at a fixed system destination. The profile fallback rejects unsupported configurations before mutation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Profile editing uses exclusive access and a content recheck. Tests cover serial byte preservation, interrupted append repair, modified-block refusal and busy-profile refusal; these safeguards do not establish crash-safe removal or atomic ownership across the link and profile.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a recoverable profile-removal commit that preserves linked-profile behavior and metadata, coordinate link ownership with profile cleanup, and verify command identity using filesystem-appropriate semantics rather than a platform-wide case assumption.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Fix macOS CLI PATH setup for users without admin rights" matches the main change. The PR adds a per-user PATH fallback (~/.local/bin link plus a marked shell-profile PATH line) for macOS users without admin rights, and the linked issue #1847 asks for the same behavior. The title is specific, short, and free of file lists or vague terms. The raw summary also covers uninstall cleanup and desktop disclosure, which the title does not mention, but the title does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1847 is the active direct linked issue. The PR adds the macOS non-admin fallback link at ~/.local/bin/kcap and updates the supported login profile. ShellProfile discloses the edit, uses marked idempotent blocks, preserves unrelated content, and supports removal. PathShimInstaller selects the fallback when no usable writable PATH link exists, rejects unsupported or unsafe cases before linking, and verifies the resolved command. CLI and desktop uninstall changes remove the profile entry while preserving other content and required PATH support. Targeted tests cover installation, disclosure order, idempotence, preservation, recovery, command verification, and cleanup.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production changes remain connected to issue #1847. They implement fallback PATH setup, profile editing, command verification, and CLI and desktop uninstall cleanup. Documentation and tests support these behaviors. No unrelated production change is demonstrated by the reviewed summary.

Fix macOS CLI PATH setup for users without admin rights
🐞 Bug fix🧪 Tests📝 Documentation🕐 40+ Minutes
AI Description
• Fall back to a user-owned CLI link and marked shell-profile PATH entry when admin rights are
unavailable.
• Disclose profile edits before installation, then re-probe terminal resolution rather than assuming
success.
• Remove owned profile entries during CLI and desktop uninstall, preserving entries needed by
another install.

High-Level Assessment
The user-owned link and shell-profile entry fit the no-admin requirement while preserving the existing writable-folder and administrator routes. Requiring users to edit their profile manually would leave the setup flow incomplete; system-wide PATH configuration would still require admin rights.
• Adds an idempotent PATH block to the supported zsh or bash login profile and removes marked blocks while preserving unrelated bytes. Skips removal when another install's local-bin link still needs the entry.

1. Unsupported shells get an unusable link✓ Resolved
Description
LinkThroughProfileAsync ignores the boolean result of profile.Add() after creating
~/.local/bin/kcap. With fish or another unsupported shell, Add() returns false without editing a
profile, leaving a link that a new terminal cannot reach through the promised PATH setup.
+ try {+ profile.Add();+ } catch (Exception ex) when (ex is IOException or UnauthorizedAccessException) {+ return new ShimResult(ShimOutcome.Failed, $"kcap was linked at {link}, but {profile.ProfilePath} could not be updated: {ex.Message}", null);+ }+ return await ProbeOutcomeAsync(link, ct).ConfigureAwait(false);
Relevance
●●● Strong
Ignoring the boolean result of profile.Add() is a deterministic local fix with a concrete failure
case.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
Every macOS installer receives a ShellProfile, but unsupported shells have no ProfilePath. Add
returns false in that case, while the installer discards that result.

2. Some home paths break the PATH export✓ Resolved
Description
ShellProfile.Line() places the home-derived folder inside double quotes but does not reject or
escape !. For a home path containing that character, history expansion in an interactive bash or
zsh login shell can change the export or produce an error instead of adding ~/.local/bin to PATH.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A home path containing a history-expansion character is written into an interactive shell profile without protection.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs[82-84]
## Recommended Fix
Generate a shell-safe literal path for both supported shells, or reject characters that cannot be represented safely. Test the generated line for a home path containing an exclamation mark.

3. Profile removal can erase concurrent edits✓ Resolved
Description
ShellProfile.Remove() reads the whole profile and later replaces it with File.WriteAllBytes
without checking whether it changed. If the user or a dotfile tool writes to the profile between
those operations, uninstall overwrites those unrelated changes with the stale copy.
+ var text = Read(profile);+ var next = text;+ while (Without(next) is { } shorter) next = shorter;+ if (!ReferenceEquals(next, text)) File.WriteAllBytes(profile, Bytes.GetBytes(next));
Relevance
●● Moderate

## Issue description
Uninstall can replace profile changes made after it read the file.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs[60-65]
## Recommended Fix
Coordinate the profile read and update, and verify the on-disk content is still the content used to calculate the replacement before committing it. If it changed, retry against the new content or report incomplete cleanup rather than overwriting it.

View medium (5) 4. An existing link leaves standard users stuck✓ Resolved
Description
InstallAsync returns immediately for an existing /usr/local/bin/kcap link to the target, before
considering the new profile fallback. When that directory is absent from a non-admin user's login
PATH, the probe reports InstalledButNotOnPath and neither the per-user link nor the profile line
is created.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The terminal-PATH pass only considers folders already on PATH. The new early return precedes the
fallback, and a failed fresh probe maps to InstalledButNotOnPath.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
An existing link at the admin destination can bypass the new non-admin fallback even when that destination is not on the login PATH.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/PathShimInstaller.cs[46-56]
## Recommended Fix
For a non-admin user, do not return from the existing-link branch when its folder does not make kcap resolvable; continue to the per-user link and profile fallback. Preserve the existing re-probe behavior for links that do resolve.
ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools
5. A partial profile write blocks retry✓ Resolved
Description
ShellProfile.Add() treats a begin marker alone as proof that the PATH block is installed. If its
append fails after writing that marker but before the export or end marker, a later install skips
the edit, while Without() also refuses to remove the unterminated block.
+ var text = File.Exists(profile) ? Read(profile) : "";+ if (IndexOfBlock(text) >= 0) return true;++ var block = text.Length > 0 && !text.EndsWith('\n') ? $"\n{BeginAfterNewline}" : Begin;+ using var stream = new FileStream(profile, FileMode.Append, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.Read);+ stream.Write(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes($"{block}\n{line}\n{End}\n"));
Relevance
●● Moderate
Partial-write recovery is a semantic reliability change with no matching history.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The idempotence check looks only for a begin marker; removal requires an end marker. The installer
catches an append failure but provides no profile repair.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
An interrupted profile append can leave a begin marker that prevents both retry and uninstall cleanup.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs[35-46]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs[68-79]

6. Uninstall can remove user profile commands✓ Resolved
Description
ShellProfile.Without() deletes everything between standalone begin and end markers without
validating the intervening content against the PATH block kcap writes. If a user has put other
commands inside those markers, or a malformed block reaches a later end marker, uninstall deletes
those commands along with the markers.
+ var begin = IndexOfBlock(text);+ if (begin < 0) return null;+ // An unterminated block may have had the user's own lines typed into it; leave it alone.+ var end = IndexOfLine(text, End, begin);+ if (end < 0) return null;
Relevance
●● Moderate
Validating block contents changes removal semantics; no close precedent.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
IndexOfBlock checks only the marker line, and Without cuts through the next end marker without
checking the export or any intervening lines.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
Profile removal treats marker boundaries alone as ownership of all commands between them.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs[68-79]
- src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/ShellProfile.cs[89-103]
## Recommended Fix
Validate that a candidate block has the exact structure and PATH line kcap generated before deleting it. Leave modified or malformed blocks in place and report that they need manual review.
ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools
ShellProfile.Removable() relies on Carries(), which converts profile read errors into false
rather than an incomplete-cleanup result. If an installed profile becomes unreadable, CLI and
desktop uninstall omit it from their removal attempts and can finish without reporting the remaining
PATH line.
+ static bool Carries(string profile) {+ try {+ return File.Exists(profile) && IndexOfBlock(Read(profile)) >= 0;+ } catch (Exception ex) when (ex is IOException or UnauthorizedAccessException) {+ return false;
Evidence
Carries suppresses read exceptions, so both removal callers receive no path to attempt or report;
the desktop treats an empty leftovers list as success.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
A profile read failure is indistinguishable from a profile with no owned PATH block, allowing uninstall to claim complete cleanup.
## Fix Focus Areas

- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/UninstallCommand.cs[318-327]
- src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Mac/MacAppRemoval.cs[43-53]
## Recommended Fix
Return inspection failures separately from profiles confirmed not to contain a block. Surface those failures in both uninstall paths and retain an incomplete-cleanup outcome so the user can retry.
ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools
8. Desktop uninstall hides a profile edit✓ Resolved
Description
MacAppRemoval.RemoveLinksAsync() now removes profile blocks, but the desktop confirmation has no
profile-removal entry. The desktop runs CLI uninstall with --keep-path-links, which also
suppresses the CLI's new profile preview, so the profile can be changed without appearing in the
removal list shown beforehand.
Disclosure gap in the uninstall confirmation is subjective; no close precedent either way.
ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs
Evidence
The new removal executes after CLI uninstall, while neither desktop confirmation facts nor the CLI
invocation's suppressed profile preview names the edit.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
Desktop uninstall removes an owned shell-profile PATH block without listing that edit in its advance confirmation.
## Fix Focus Areas

- src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallFacts.cs[8-14]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallConfirmation.cs[5-50]
## Recommended Fix
Include eligible shell-profile files in desktop uninstall facts and confirmation before execution. Keep the desktop's link-removal delegation separate from CLI uninstall's --keep-path-links behavior.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Restructure this paragraph so the Linux and Windows behavior is not read as part of the macOS fallback.
The macOS profile-fallback text now sits between the macOS clause and the on Linux and on Windows clauses. After "require adding ~/.local/bin to PATH manually;" the next clause starts with on Linux, the same first writable folder, or else .... A reader can take that as a continuation of the unsupported-shell case. The phrase "the same first writable folder" also loses its antecedent.
Move the Linux and Windows clauses before the fallback text, or split the macOS fallback into its own sentence or paragraph. For example, keep one sentence each for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Then add the profile-fallback details as a separate sentence after the macOS sentence.

Standard macOS users who have no writable folder on their login PATH currently hit an admin prompt they cannot complete. Fall back to
~/.local/bin/kcapand add that folder to the supported login shell's profile when the user lacks admin rights, including when an existing system link is off PATH.The installer discloses the profile line before writing it, rejects unsupported shells and unsafe paths before creating a fallback link, marks the edit, avoids duplicates, and verifies that the freshly resolved command is the installed link using the repository’s host-specific path comparison rules.
