Closes #1786 — AI-4153

What & why

Dragging kcap.app to the Trash leaves its LaunchAgents, the local server, a dangling kcap link and every harness hook behind, and kcap uninstall deleted the local server's data while its service kept running. kcap uninstall now refuses while agents run (--force), removes the local server first (--purge-local required with --yes), and removes kcap links to itself. macOS gains "Uninstall kcap…": a confirmation that warns about local data, then a relaunch as --uninstall that builds none of the normal app, runs the CLI, removes its links (admin prompt if needed) and trashes the bundle.

Where to look

  • MacAppRemoval: the root rm re-checks the link still resolves into the bundle.
  • UninstallCommand: local removal runs before anything else, and any failure keeps ~/.config/kcap.

Verification

  • CLI UninstallCommandTests 40/40, Core suite 5007 passed / 0 failed, App uninstall tests green; solution builds with 0 warnings.
  • Not yet run: the end-to-end uninstall on a real Mac (root-owned link, trash, relaunch).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • macOS users can uninstall the app from its menu. The flow explains what will be removed, displays progress, and offers a retry if cleanup fails.
    • The uninstall command can remove an installed local server and its recorded sessions with consent, and remove command links belonging to that installation.
    • Added --purge-local to authorize local-server data deletion and --force to continue when daemon agents are busy.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded uninstall guidance with data-retention, confirmation, and cleanup-failure details. Hosted sessions remain available after uninstall.

--yes alone is not consent to delete recorded sessions, so it refuses while a local server is installed unless --purge-local or --keep-config is given.

A relaunch for the uninstall skips applying a pending update on exit: it would replace the bundle being removed.

A set flag skips applying a pending update on exit, so a quit during fact gathering would drop it.

The admin prompt re-checks the link still resolves into the bundle: a link repointed after the scan passes the script's readlink guard.

The mode is read before App is constructed: its telemetry facade would otherwise create the device
id and spool under the config root the uninstall removes.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI uninstall flow now handles local-server cleanup, daemon activity, and install-owned PATH links. The macOS app adds a menu-based uninstall flow with confirmation, a relaunch window, streamed CLI output, and app-bundle cleanup.

Changes: CLI uninstall and cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
CLI safeguards and local-server cleanup
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/UninstallCommand.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/OutgoingRecorders.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/ServiceRemoval.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/DaemonServiceCommands.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Resources/help-uninstall.txt, README.md, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/UninstallCommandTests.cs
kcap uninstall adds --force and --purge-local, checks local-server state before cleanup, and retains the config directory when local-server removal or registry reading fails. Agent shutdown is shared through ServiceRemoval.EndAgentsAsync. Tests cover consent, cleanup ordering, busy daemons, and failure handling.
Install-owned PATH link cleanup
src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/*, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/CommandServices.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/ApplicationReferences.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Mac/MacAppRemoval.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Core.Tests.Unit/Setup/KcapLinkRemoverTests.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/UninstallCommandTests.cs
KcapLinkRemover finds and rechecks kcap links that resolve to the current binary. CLI uninstall removes matching links unless --keep-path-links is set, and reports failures with a manual-removal command.

macOS app uninstall

Layer / File(s) Summary
Uninstall discovery and confirmation
src/Capacitor.App/App.axaml.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Mac/OtherKcapInstall*.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/Uninstall*.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/Daemon*.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Views/AppMenu.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/LifecyclePromptViewModel.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Views/LifecyclePromptWindow.axaml, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/UninstallConfirmationTests.cs, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/UninstallFactsSourceTests.cs
The macOS menu gains an uninstall action. The app gathers server, daemon, and other-install facts, then presents a destructive confirmation. The prompt warns about local-server session deletion and adds --purge-local when a local server is present.
Relaunch and bundle removal
src/Capacitor.App/App.axaml.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Program.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/KcapCli.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallMode.cs, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/UninstallRunViewModel.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Mac/MacAppRemoval.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Views/UninstallWindow.axaml, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/Uninstall*Tests.cs
The relaunched app skips normal startup and runs CLI uninstall in a progress window. After CLI success, it removes app links and support files, then moves the bundle to Trash. CLI or link failures stop removal; a Trash failure reveals the bundle.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2d74f

Uninstall is mergeable with a bounded cleanup risk: if an owned command link cannot be inspected, the app may report completion while leaving that link behind.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2d74f

The destructive steps have explicit consent and failure gates, and privileged cleanup is narrowly scoped. One cleanup-completeness gap can leave a command link behind while reporting success. End-to-end administrator-assisted removal on macOS also remains unvalidated.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Failed link inspection is treated as proof that no owned link remains. KcapLinkRemover converts I/O and access errors into false or null, while MacAppRemoval uses another discovery scan as its completion result. Consequently, an uninspectable install-owned link can survive while the app trashes its bundle and reports completion, leaving a dangling PATH entry and removing the in-place retry target. Known deletion failures are handled, but discovery failures are not represented across the cleanup boundary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The operation affects the current user's kcap background work, coding-agent integrations, settings and sign-in state, and potentially every locally recorded session. Link cleanup examines fixed kcap filenames in four install folders; the administrator-assisted operation only unlinks selected paths. The confirmation explicitly warns that other installs sharing this state stop working and hosted sessions remain hosted.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Raw --uninstall arguments select destructive execution without the menu prompt, but this alone does not establish a new security-boundary bypass: the base already allowed same-user CLI uninstall with --yes. Replacing the bundle across relaunch also requires filesystem modification authority. No additional lower-privilege or remote route was established by the inspected source.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Before requesting administrator assistance, cleanup rechecks that the candidate resolves to the bundle binary. The administrator-side script shell-quotes both arguments and rechecks the symlink's immediate target before unlinking it. These checks constrain authority, although the separate check and unlink are not an atomic identity operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Global uninstall is not serialized against local setup through final config deletion. An initially absent local installation skips the lifecycle lease, and an acquired local-removal lease ends before the later recursive config delete. This residual concurrency exposure predates the PR's coordinated local-removal path; it is not retained as an introduced concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent link discovery as owned, unrelated or absent, and inspection-failed outcomes. Propagate inspection failures into both CLI failure retention and the app's bundle-removal gate, preserving the in-place retry path instead of treating incomplete discovery as successful cleanup.

Explanation

Issue #1786 requirements are covered. The macOS app adds the “Uninstall kcap…” action, shows local-session deletion warnings, relaunches in uninstall mode, removes app links and support files, and moves the bundle to the Trash. UninstallCommand removes local-server state before config cleanup, refuses busy agents unless --force is used, removes applicable PATH links, and preserves config after local-removal or registry failures. Tests cover the app flow, CLI rules, link handling, and failure cases.

High-Level Assessment

Reusing CLI cleanup in a minimal relaunched app is appropriate: in-process removal could recreate configuration or restart services, while duplicating cleanup in the app would create divergent uninstall behavior.

2. Uninstall warning can describe a daemon that is gone ✓ Resolved
Description

+    public DaemonActivity? LatestActivity => Volatile.Read(ref _latestActivity);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent accepted precedent specifically requires checking attachment before presenting daemon-running
warnings from replayed snapshots.

PR-#1682

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The snapshot subscription at DaemonLifecycleController.cs:186-191 writes _latestActivity, but
the attach-status handler does not clear it on disconnect. UninstallConfirmation.cs:9-14 chooses
its agent line from Activity first and checks DaemonRunning only when Activity is null, so a
retained idle snapshot bypasses the warning even when the PID is live. KcapCli.UninstallAsync
always passes --force.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
`DaemonLifecycleController.LatestActivity` retains a snapshot after the daemon detaches. The uninstall confirmation can then show a stale agent count or omit the warning for a still-running daemon whose current activity is unknown, before uninstall proceeds with `--force`.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[103-108]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/DaemonLifecycleController.cs[184-196]
- src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallConfirmation.cs[9-14]

## Recommended Fix
In `OnAttachStatus`, clear `_latestActivity` with `Volatile.Write` whenever the status leaves Connected/attached, so `LatestActivity` is non-null only while the daemon is attached. Preserve the conservative warning when PID liveness indicates the daemon is running but current activity is unknown. Add a test confirming that disconnecting after a snapshot makes `LatestActivity` null.

3. The app-menu test uses a shared parallel key ✗ Dismissed
Description
Uninstall_item_is_disabled_until_an_action_is_set and Uninstall_is_destructive both use
[NotInParallel("AvaloniaSession")] instead of class-scoped keys. Neither test starts a real
subprocess—the first checks Avalonia menu state and the second checks view-model behavior—so the
shared key creates an ad-hoc cross-class scheduling group rather than isolating each test class.
Code

test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/AppMenuBarTests.cs[R247-249]

+    [Test, RunOn(OS.MacOs)]
+    [NotInParallel("AvaloniaSession")]
+    public async Task Uninstall_item_is_disabled_until_an_action_is_set() {
Relevance

●● Moderate

Recent test-isolation precedent supports changing keyed attributes, but another equally recent
precedent rejected the same requested adjustment.

PR-#1645
PR-#1644

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Both added tests have a keyed NotInParallel attribute using AvaloniaSession. The menu test
exercises state and the lifecycle prompt test checks view-model behavior; neither starts a
subprocess, so the shared key does not match the checklist's class-scoped isolation requirement for
tests avoiding stateful interference.

test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/AppMenuBarTests.cs[247-249]
test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/LifecyclePromptViewModelTests.cs[207-209]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The Avalonia menu and lifecycle prompt tests use the same custom `NotInParallel` key despite not spawning real subprocesses. Use class-scoped isolation for each test instead of an ad-hoc shared scheduling group.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/AppMenuBarTests.cs[247-249]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/LifecyclePromptViewModelTests.cs[207-209]

## Recommended Fix
Replace `[NotInParallel("AvaloniaSession")]` with `[NotInParallel(nameof(AppMenuBarTests))]` in the menu test and `[NotInParallel(nameof(LifecyclePromptViewModelTests))]` in the lifecycle prompt test, unless cross-class serialization is genuinely required and explicitly documented.

4. Other installs can lose their warning ✓ Resolved
Description
UninstallFactsSource.ReadTerminalPathAsync substitutes null when the login-shell PATH probe
exceeds two seconds, and OtherKcapInstalls.Find interprets that as no other installs. On that
timeout or a probe failure, the confirmation omits the notice that another installed kcap will
stop working when its shared hooks and configuration are removed.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallFactsSource.cs[R34-36]

+        } catch (OperationCanceledException) when (!ct.IsCancellationRequested) {
+            Log.WriteLine("kcap: the terminal PATH took too long to read for the uninstall");
+            return null;
Relevance

●● Moderate

The timeout concern is plausible, but history only covers broader PATH-timeout handling and provides
no decisive precedent.

PR-#1383

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The two-second deadline converts an unsuccessful probe to null; the finder returns an empty list for
null, and the confirmation only mentions other installs by iterating that list.

src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallFactsSource.cs[18-39]
src/Capacitor.App/Platform/Mac/OtherKcapInstalls.cs[7-9]

## Fix Focus Areas

- src/Capacitor.App/Services/UninstallConfirmation.cs[19-23]

5. A file error during local removal aborts the uninstall ✓ Resolved
Description
RemoveLocalServerAsync catches only LocalLifecycleException, LocalInstallFailure and
LocalUpgradeFailure, allowing IOException or UnauthorizedAccessException from the purge's
Directory.Delete calls to escape HandleAsync. When deleting server data or spooled recordings
fails, the top-level crash handler runs instead of the normal failure accounting, skipping plugin,
hook, skill and link removal and the incomplete-uninstall summary.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/UninstallCommand.cs[R359-365]

+        try {
+            outcome = await local.RunAsync(new SyncProgress<LocalInstallEvent>(LocalCommand.RenderRecovery),

+            await Console.Error.WriteLineAsync($"Could not remove the local server: {ex.Message}");
+            return false;

Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent uninstall precedents consistently require filesystem-cleanup failures to remain visible and
preserve retryable incomplete cleanup.

PR-#1581

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The catch filter at UninstallCommand.cs:362 excludes filesystem exceptions, while
LocalPurge.FinishAsync calls LocalStackStop.Delete, which performs recursive Directory.Delete
without handling them. Other failures in the command set hadFailures and allow cleanup to
continue, but these exceptions reach the CLI's outer crash handler.

6. Keep-config run can still delete local data ✓ Resolved
Description
UninstallCommand.HandleAsync exempts keepConfig from the --yes purge-consent check even when
the local state records an interrupted purge. With --yes --keep-config and no --purge-local,
LocalStack.RunAsync recovery finishes that purge and deletes bin, run, data, and logs
before the requested non-purge uninstall runs, despite the documented promise to keep the server's
data; a plan line is the only notice during the non-interactive run.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/UninstallCommand.cs[R85-88]

+        var removeLocal = localState is LocalStackState.Installed or LocalStackState.Interrupted;
+
+        if (removeLocal && skipPrompt && !purgeLocal && !keepConfig) {
+            var subject = localState is LocalStackState.Installed { Installation.ServerUrl: var installedUrl }
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent uninstall precedents accept preserving configuration and preventing cleanup paths from
deleting unintended local state.

PR-#1581

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The consent condition excludes keepConfig, while the comment in UninstallCommand.cs at lines
122–123 acknowledges that an interrupted purge is finished regardless of that flag.
LocalPurgeRecovery runs inside LocalStack.RunAsync and calls LocalPurge.FinishAsync, which
deletes the local data directories, including data and logs. The README and help text describe
--keep-config as keeping the server's data.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
With `--yes --keep-config` and no `--purge-local`, an interrupted local purge passes the consent check, then recovery finishes the purge and deletes the server's recorded sessions despite the documented promise to keep its data.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/UninstallCommand.cs[84-96]
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/UninstallCommand.cs[121-125]

## Recommended Fix
Detect `Interrupted` state with `operation == LocalPurgeJournal.Operation` separately, and do not let `keepConfig` exempt that state from the non-interactive consent refusal. Require `--purge-local` for a `--yes` run in this state, explain in the refusal that recovery must finish the purge, and add a test for `--yes --keep-config` without `--purge-local`.

🟡 Minor · Propagate link-inspection failures without aborting CLI cleanup. · KcapLinkRemover.cs:14-33

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Setup/KcapLinkRemover.cs:14-33
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Propagate link-inspection failures without aborting CLI cleanup.

KcapLinkRemover converts inspection errors to false or null. An install-owned symlink can therefore disappear from Find() and produce no KcapLinkFailure. MacAppRemoval then returns an empty list, so the app moves its bundle to the Trash while the symlink remains. Let the helper propagate these errors so the app's existing failure gate stops the removal. Catch them at the CLI boundaries so kcap uninstall reports the failure, continues cleanup, and returns its existing error status.
