What & why

kcap set-title posted /hooks/set-title, which only fills an empty title, so on any titled session it exited 0 and changed nothing: an agent asked to rename its session reported a rename that never happened, and the first-prompt title never reached a hosted session. It now posts the owner-checked /hooks/agent-title from kurrent-io/kcap-server#2545. A plain title is a rename; --auto is the first-prompt title, which replaces generated titles but never a start title or a rename, and ClaudeTitlePrompt asks for it. A rename the server kept another title over exits 3 and prints the title the session keeps; an --auto title that loses prints the same note and exits 0, since a chosen title outranking it is the intended outcome.

Where to look

Exit 3, not 2: 2 is the unusable-server-URL exit. Against a server without the route (bare 404) the title goes to /hooks/set-title, which cannot confirm it, so a rename exits 3 there too. --auto counts only as the first argument. A coded session_not_found is asked twice more a second apart, because a first-prompt title can race the session into the read model the ownership check reads.

Verification

Contract tests run the real binary against a stub: rename and --auto bodies, applied (exit 0, silent), a rename not applied (exit 3 naming the kept title), a losing --auto (exit 0 with the note), --auto inside a title, older-server fallback, refusal. Container tests pin the coded-404 retry with fake time. Core, CLI and daemon unit suites run in full; three CLI timing tests failed under load and pass alone. dotnet publish -c Release shows no IL2026/IL3050.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added kcap set-title --auto to automatically name sessions while preserving titles chosen at startup or through a rename.
    • Session title commands now report whether a title was applied, not applied, unconfirmed, or unavailable. Automatic titles that do not take effect still exit successfully.
    • Added title precedence rules, session-ID resolution, and a 120-character title limit. Command exit statuses distinguish errors from rejected or unconfirmed renames.
  • Documentation

    • Updated command help and session-title documentation with usage and behavior details.

The owner-checked /hooks/agent-title route answers whether the title applies; an older server
without it only fills an untitled session, so that answer exits 3 rather than 0.

📝 Walkthrough

The title command now supports explicit renames and automatic title updates. It interprets server responses, retries sessions not found, and falls back to the older endpoint. CLI help, prompt instructions, documentation, and tests cover the updated behavior.

Changes: Session title handling

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1627f

The title command has bounded edge-case reporting and fallback issues, plus incomplete exit-code help; these should be fixed or consciously accepted before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 65c16

The client preserves authentication and distinguishes confirmed renames from rejected or unconfirmed updates. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but server-side ownership checks and concurrent-update behavior could not be verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly exposed operation is session-title metadata mutation under the current command credentials. Each request names one caller-controlled session ID; the client does not bind that ID to an owner. Effective cross-user or tenant reach therefore depends on server authorization, which was not available for verification.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The client leaves ownership and title precedence authoritative on the server. It does not override a NotApplied result, and explicit authorization failures do not trigger legacy fallback. The legacy destination and caller-selected session identity already existed at the PR base, so fallback alone does not demonstrate a newly introduced authorization bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Explicit application outcomes improve failure containment by preventing rejected or unconfirmed renames from being reported as successful. Concurrent precedence, repeated renames after response loss, and state after interruption remain server-contract gaps rather than verified security defects.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the paired server contract across supported versions: reject foreign-session mutations on both routes, enforce each route's intended title precedence atomically, and establish duplicate-request and concurrent-rename behavior after ambiguous transport failure.

Make kcap set-title rename sessions and report the outcome

🐞 Bug fix ✨ Enhancement 🧪 Tests 📝 Documentation 🕐 40+ Minutes

Grey Divider

AI Description

• Make plain set-title requests rename sessions instead of silently leaving existing titles
 unchanged.
• Add --auto for first-prompt titles without overriding titles chosen at start or renamed later.
• Report unapplied titles, support older servers, and retry sessions not yet visible to the server.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Require the new server endpoint
  • ➕ Simpler client behavior and no ambiguous legacy outcome.
  • ➖ Title requests stop working entirely against older servers.

Recommendation: Keep the PR's fallback: it preserves limited older-server functionality while exit 3 prevents the CLI from claiming an unconfirmed rename. The new endpoint remains the only path that can confirm whether a title applied.

Remediation recommended

1. First-prompt titling fails every session on older servers ✓ Resolved
Description
SetTitleCommand.Handle returns exit 3 for SetTitleResult.Unconfirmed even when auto is true,
and prints a warning without the "Nothing else to do" line the auto NotApplied branch adds.
Against a server without /hooks/agent-title, every first-prompt kcap set-title --auto the hook
asks for now fails in the agent's Bash tool. Before this change, those runs exited 0. The older
route's fill-only-if-empty behaviour is close to what --auto asks for, yet the agent sees a
failure it was told not to mention and may retry it or bring it up with the user.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetTitleCommand.cs[R34-37]

+            case SetTitleResult.Unconfirmed:
+                await stderr.WriteLineAsync("Title sent, but this server cannot confirm it: it only titles a session that has no title yet.");
+
+                return NotApplied;
Relevance

●●● Strong

Older-server fallback is intentionally best-effort; auto mode should not turn successful
compatibility behavior into failure.

PR-#1667
PR-#1376

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The fallback SetTitleOnOlderServerAsync always returns Unconfirmed, and Handle maps
Unconfirmed to NotApplied (3) whatever the value of auto. ClaudeTitlePrompt tells the agent
to run kcap set-title --auto silently on every first prompt, so on every older server that run now
ends in a nonzero exit.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
With `--auto` on an older server, the `Unconfirmed` result exits 3. The first-prompt hook then fails in the agent's shell on every session, though the old fill-if-empty route already does what `--auto` asks for.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetTitleCommand.cs[34-37]

## Recommended Fix
When `auto` is true and the result is `Unconfirmed`, return 0 and print nothing, or at least add "Nothing else to do." to the message. Keep exit 3 for plain renames. Update the help text and the README to match.

2. Concurrent renames can report success ✗ Dismissed
Description
SessionsApi.SetSessionTitleAsync treats the server's applied value as confirmation, but
kcap-server computes it against a title snapshot read before appending the rename event. If a
later-timestamped rename is appended first but has not reached the read model, this command can exit
0 even though projection keeps that other rename.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Http/SessionsApi.cs[R36-38]

+                return answer?.Bool("applied") switch {
+                    true  => new SetTitleResult.Applied(),
+                    false => new SetTitleResult.NotApplied(answer.Value.Str("title")),
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent history accepts fixes preventing false success when server responses are inconclusive or
stale.

PR-#1667
PR-#1684

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The CLI maps applied=true directly to success. The server reads a SQL title state before
appending, predicts its response from that state, and the projector later applies title events using
the then-current state and rename timestamp precedence.

3. Agents misdiagnose rejected renames ✓ Resolved
Description
SetTitleCommand.Handle says a plain rename lost to a later rename whenever kcap-server returns
applied=false, although that response contains no reason. When the server's deletion guard skips
an append after a transient check failure, it also returns applied=false, so the agent receives an
incorrect explanation for the refusal.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetTitleCommand.cs[31]

+                    : $"Title not applied: the session keeps \"{shown}\", from a rename made after this one.");
Relevance

●●● Strong

The response lacks refusal reasons, so attributing every rejection to a later rename is misleading.

PR-#1667
PR-#1757

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The CLI names a later rename as the cause. The server returns only applied and title, and its

Informational

4. A title word "--auto" silently switches modes ✓ Resolved
Description
Program.cs recognizes --auto anywhere in the arguments and removes every matching token when
building the title, changing both the title and the request mode. When an unquoted title contains
--auto, such as kcap set-title Remove --auto flag, the handler sends Remove flag with `rename:
false`; an existing title can then block the requested rename and lead to exit 3 without a warning.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Program.cs[R911-914]

+        var auto = args.Contains(SetTitleCommand.AutoFlag);
+
        // Join all remaining args as the title (supports unquoted multi-word titles)
-        var title = string.Join(' ', args.Skip(1)).Trim();
+        var title = string.Join(' ', args.Skip(1).Where(a => a != SetTitleCommand.AutoFlag)).Trim();
Relevance

●●● Strong

Argument parsing removes legitimate title words and changes mode; recent history accepts explicit
flag-presence fixes.

PR-#1054
PR-#196

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The argument handling at src/Capacitor.Cli/Program.cs[897-914] detects --auto at any position
and excludes matching tokens when joining the title, even though unquoted multi-word titles are
supported. The handler converts auto mode to rename: false, which is sent alongside the altered
title, so a title word can unintentionally change a rename into an auto-title request.

## Recommended Fix
Recognize `--auto` only when it is `args[1]`, before the title. Build the title from `args.Skip(auto ? 2 : 1)` so later `--auto` tokens remain in it, update the usage guard to match, and add a test with an unquoted `--auto` title word.

5. Kept title prints as empty quotes ✓ Resolved
Description
SetSessionTitleAsync builds NotApplied(answer.Value.Str("title")), so Shown is null whenever
the server answers applied:false without a string title. SetTitleCommand then interpolates it
directly, and the agent is told the session keeps "", which is a misleading message on the path that
exists to report which title survived.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetTitleCommand.cs[R28-31]

+            case SetTitleResult.NotApplied { Shown: var shown }:
+                await stderr.WriteLineAsync(auto
+ ? $"Title not applied: the session keeps \"{shown}\", a title chosen at start or a rename. Nothing else to do."
+                    : $"Title not applied: the session keeps \"{shown}\", from a rename made after this one.");

The first-prompt hook asks for --auto silently, and a title someone chose outranking it is the
intended outcome. --auto is read only as the first argument, since an unquoted title may contain it.

🟡 Minor · Map malformed current-route responses separately from legacy fallback. · SessionsApi.cs:36-40

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Http/SessionsApi.cs:36-40
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Map malformed current-route responses separately from legacy fallback.

When /hooks/agent-title returns a successful response without a readable applied field, SessionsApi.SetSessionTitleAsync returns SetTitleResult.Unconfirmed. SetTitleCommand then prints the legacy-server diagnostic, although the legacy fallback was not used. This misreports a current-route protocol failure and can hide that the server returned an invalid response.

Return a distinct result for an invalid /hooks/agent-title response, and reserve Unconfirmed for /hooks/set-title fallback responses.

Suggested fix
-                    null  => new SetTitleResult.Unconfirmed()
+                    null  => new SetTitleResult.InvalidResponse()

🟡 Minor · Restrict the legacy fallback to a bare 404. · SessionsApi.cs:45

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/Http/SessionsApi.cs:45
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restrict the legacy fallback to a bare 404.

When /hooks/agent-title returns a 404 JSON object with an error other than session_not_found, the current condition sends a second request to /hooks/set-title. The CLI then reports the legacy route as unconfirmed instead of reporting the original failure.

Use the legacy route only when ReadObjectAsync returns no JSON object. Keep parsed error responses on the normal failure path.

Suggested fix
-            if ((await ReadObjectAsync(response, ct))?.Str("error") != "session_not_found") return await SetTitleOnOlderServerAsync(sessionId, title, ct);
+            var answer = await ReadObjectAsync(response, ct);
+            if (answer is null) return await SetTitleOnOlderServerAsync(sessionId, title, ct);
+            if (answer.Value.Str("error") != "session_not_found") throw await FailureAsync(response);

@coderabbitai Both outside-diff findings are fixed in e056b64: an unreadable 2xx answer from /hooks/agent-title is now a failure (exit 1) rather than the older-server note, and only an uncoded 404 falls back to /hooks/set-title — any other coded 404 is a failure. Container tests pin both.
