Fixes #4801

Description

While #4708 updated shouldSkip in middleware/compress to check request Cache-Control: no-transform directives across repeated field lines and quoted directive arguments via c.HasHeaderValue(fiber.HeaderCacheControl, "no-transform"), the response check right below it still called headerlist.ContainsFold(c.GetRespHeader(fiber.HeaderCacheControl), "no-transform").

Because c.GetRespHeader reads only the first Cache-Control response field line and headerlist.ContainsFold splits on commas inside quoted directive arguments:

  1. A no-transform directive added on a second response Cache-Control line (RFC 9110 §5.3 / RFC 9111 §5.2.2.6) was ignored and the response was compressed anyway.
  2. A response header such as Cache-Control: public, ext="x,no-transform,y" was split inside the quotes and falsely treated as no-transform.
  3. A response header with an escaped quote before no-transform (Cache-Control: ext="a\"", no-transform) failed to match no-transform.

This PR updates shouldSkip to inspect response Cache-Control lines with fieldname.First, fieldname.Lines, and headerlist.AllQuotedPairs (matching DefaultReq.HasHeaderValue).

Walkthrough

The compression middleware checks all response Cache-Control field lines for no-transform and handles quoted directive arguments. Tests cover repeated lines, escaped quotes, and quoted arguments.

shouldSkip uses a helper to scan matching response header lines and quoted-pair members for no-transform. Tests verify that a directive on a later field line or after an escaped quote prevents compression, while a match only inside a quoted argument does not.

Responses that carry Cache-Control: no-transform can still be compressed when they come through a proxy that preserves lowercase header names. This is a narrow case, but it is the behavior the PR sets out to fix, so use the response header's own normalization state before merging.

Explanation

The description explains the problem, the fix, and its benefits. It references the issue, identifies the relevant parsing cases, and includes the change type and test checklist. Benchmark, documentation, changelog, and migration details are not provided, but these omissions do not make the description incomplete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#4801] requires response Cache-Control: no-transform detection across repeated field lines and quoted arguments. The PR summary reports that shouldSkip now scans all response lines and parses quoted pairs. The reported tests cover repeated lines, escaped quotes, and a quoted comma argument. These changes address the linked issue.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

  1. middleware/compress/compress_test.go:1209-1210: Test_Compress_Response_Quoted_Cache_Control_Argument_Is_Not_No_Transform passes without the fix.
Why: the quoted argument sits on a second Cache-Control line. Before this PR, shouldSkip read only the first line (public) through GetRespHeader. So the test never hits the quoted-comma split that case 2 of the description is about. With the compress.go from main and the tests from this PR, this test passes and only Test_Compress_Response_Repeated_Cache_Control_Lines_No_Transform fails.
Fix: send the header as the single line the description quotes. That version fails on main (no-transform match, so no gzip) and passes with this PR:
    c.Set(fiber.HeaderCacheControl, `public, ext="x,no-transform,y"`)

Checked: go test ./middleware/compress/... -count=1 (with and without -race) and make lint on 988b980; I also ran the three new tests against the compress.go from main, before and after the change above.

Thanks for catching that @ReneWerner87! Updated Test_Compress_Response_Quoted_Cache_Control_Argument_Is_Not_No_Transform in middleware/compress/compress_test.go to send public, ext="x,no-transform,y" as a single Cache-Control header line via c.Set(...).

The fix is correct: both new tests fail on main and pass here.

One point on cost: fieldname.Canonical(respHeader) walks every response header before the Cache-Control lookup, so every response that reaches shouldSkip pays for it. Measured on arm64 with a response carrying nine headers (benchstat, n=6, 0 allocs on all sides):

Benchmark main this PR with the suggestion
shouldSkip, no Cache-Control 67.7 ns 114.8 ns (+69%) 65.6 ns (-3%)
shouldSkip, with Cache-Control 80.6 ns 174.7 ns (+117%) 115.7 ns (+43%)
Benchmark_Compress 196 ns 225 ns (+15%) 193 ns (-2%)

DefaultReq.HasHeaderValue decides on the config alone, and that works here too. What remains with Cache-Control present is the quoted-list parse itself. The tests pass with the change.

Thanks for the benchmark comparison @ReneWerner87
Updated hasResponseNoTransform in middleware/compress/compress.go to use canonical := headerlookup.Canonical(c) directly.
