feat(#1016): BiRefNet high-quality matting tier (exported, parity-verified, hosted) - #1028
Conversation
Epic #818 Track C2. The export script only — the C++ Quality tier follows. BiRefNet is MIT (code AND weights), so it clears the permissive bar, but it is NOT straightforwardly exportable. Three blockers, all solved: 1. The published checkpoint carries fp16 weights, so tracing with an fp32 input dies with "Input type (float) and bias type (c10::Half)". Exported as fp32 (ORT's CPU EP lacks fp16 kernels for much of this graph anyway). 2. `torchvision::deform_conv2d` has NO ONNX representation. It is not optional: the checkpoint carries 150 deformable tensors (offset/modulator/regular convs), so disabling ASPPDeformable would discard trained weights and silently change the model. Instead the script decomposes it into ops ONNX does understand — GridSample for the offset sampling, MatMul for the convolution — VERIFIED against torchvision.ops.deform_conv2d to ~7e-07 on every kernel size BiRefNet uses (1x1, 3x3, 7x7), modulation mask included. 3. Patching torchvision AFTER import silently does nothing: birefnet.py does `from torchvision.ops import deform_conv2d`, binding the symbol into its own namespace. The script now patches every loaded module holding a reference and FAILS LOUDLY if it patches none, rather than letting the export die much later with an opaque "unrecognized namespace". Same discipline as the depth export (#1018): a licence gate that refuses anything outside the permissive allow-list before downloading weights, pinned input dims with a runtime-size guard, torch-vs-ORT parity assertions, and a refusal to write a graph containing non-finite output. Adds one check the depth export did not need: a synthetic-disc sanity test. A matte that is merely finite can still segment NOTHING, and a constant field would pass parity happily. Verified: parity 1.5e-07, alpha spread 1.000 on the disc, and on a real photo a clean silhouette resolving individual fingers and hair strands — measured 3x crisper at the edge than U2Net (0.86% vs 2.56% ambiguous mid-band pixels). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds Quality::{Fast,Best} — U2Net at 320² (Apache-2.0, the shipped default) and
BiRefNet at 1024² (MIT, ~930 MB). Both share ImageNet normalisation and NCHW
layout, so the inference path is parameterised by edge length rather than
forked; only the model file and input size differ.
Measured through the shipped C++ path on a reference photo, identical 13.9%
coverage in both tiers but a much cleaner cut:
Fast (U2Net 320) ambiguous-edge 0.41%
Best (BiRefNet 1024) ambiguous-edge 0.13% -> 3.2x crisper
(Ambiguous = alpha strictly between 0.05 and 0.95; lower is a sharper matte.
This independently reproduces the 3x measured in Python during the export.)
Default stays Fast so every existing caller is unchanged — Best costs ~930 MB
and several CPU-seconds, so it has to be opt-in. `resolveModelBlocking` degrades
Best -> Fast when BiRefNet is not yet downloaded (a normal state at that size)
and reports which tier actually ran via Result::qualityUsed, so a caller can
never believe it got the better matte when it did not. The download timeout
scales with the tier (40 min vs 10) — the 10-minute cap was tuned for U2Net's
170 MB and would abort BiRefNet mid-download on a slow link.
Also fixes a LATENT BUG in an existing test. SegmentsWhenModelPresentElseFallsBack
asserted the output keeps the input size, but with a model present the default
foregroundRatio (0.85) crops to the subject bbox and re-pads to a square, so a
128x128 input legitimately returns 56x56. It only ever passed because CI has no
cached model and always took the fallback branch; it fails the moment a
developer has run background removal once. Verified pre-existing by stashing
these changes. Now asserts the real contract: a valid square image.

Completes parity for the Best tier.
GUI "High-quality matte (BiRefNet, ~930 MB)" checkbox in the AI: Image → 3D
section, beside "Remove background"
CLI qtmesh generate3d --matting fast|best (best implies --remove-bg)
MCP generate_mesh_from_image { "matting": "fast"|"best" }
The tier threads MeshGenController -> MeshGenPredictor::Options ->
Trellis2Predictor::Options -> BackgroundRemover::Options, so it applies to the
TRELLIS.2 path (which always mattes) as well as the Tripo backends.
Default stays Fast everywhere: Best is a ~930 MB download and several
CPU-seconds, so it is strictly opt-in and no existing caller changes behaviour.
Two build traps worth recording:
* `resolveModelBlocking` was defined inside the #ifndef ENABLE_ONNX branch,
so the ONNX build failed to link. It is guard-independent logic and now
sits outside both branches.
* The QML lives in a compiled Qt resource (qml_resources.qrc), so `strings`
on the binary cannot confirm an edit landed — Qt compresses the payload.
Checking the generated qrc_*.cpp timestamp against the source, and loading
the app to see whether QML errors appear, is the reliable test.
Verified in a running app: MCP advertises the `matting` arg with the right
description, and the panel loads with no QML errors (an undefined id would
throw). The matte difference itself was measured earlier through the shipped
C++ path — 0.41% -> 0.13% ambiguous edge pixels, 3.2x crisper, same coverage.

Field bug: ticking "High-quality matte (BiRefNet)" produced a mesh with the
studio backdrop reconstructed as a flat slab behind the subject, i.e. NO
background removal at all — worse than leaving the box unticked.
Root cause: four call sites set Options::quality from the user's choice but
still resolved the model with the DEFAULT (Fast) path. BackgroundRemover then
preprocessed at the Best tier's 1024² while U²-Net's graph declares a fixed
320² input, so ORT threw:
Got invalid dimensions for input: index 2 Got: 1024 Expected: 320
removeBackground returned ok=false, and TRELLIS.2's matte block treats that as
"no matte available" and carries on — which is why the failure was invisible
until the backdrop showed up as geometry.
Fixed at every site so the tier and the loaded model can never disagree:
* Trellis2Predictor — resolveModelBlocking on the main thread; on a worker
(no nested event loop) read only what is cached and degrade to Fast rather
than hand back a path for the wrong model.
* MeshGenController — both pre-ensure calls now fetch the REQUESTED tier
(pre-ensuring Fast left BiRefNet uncached), and the worker's own matte call
resolves model + tier together.
* MeshGenPredictor — resolveModelBlocking, feeding the resolved tier back
into Options.
Two regression tests pin the contract: a deliberate tier/model mismatch must
FAIL LOUDLY rather than return an unmatted image that looks like a successful
cut-out, and resolveModelBlocking's reported tier must always match the file it
returns.
Verified on the reported image: Best now resolves birefnet.onnx and succeeds
(ok=1, 11.8% coverage — a tighter cut than Fast's 18.0%, which was including
backdrop).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The tier bug was invisible because nothing reported the matte stage: a failed
matte produced a mesh with a backdrop slab and NOTHING in the log to explain it.
The user had to notice the artifact and report it.
Now the stage prints the model it loaded:
[trellis2] matte: U2Net 320 (u2net.onnx)
[trellis2] matte: BiRefNet 1024 (birefnet.onnx)
and the failure path — previously a silent `warning` string the CLI never
surfaced — says plainly that the background will become geometry.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
It was defined inside the `#ifndef ENABLE_ONNX` branch, so the ONNX build
(where it is actually called) failed to link:
Undefined symbols: BackgroundRemover::resolveModelBlocking(...)
The helper is pure path/fallback logic with no ONNX dependency, so it belongs
outside both branches. Verified by syntax-checking the file with ENABLE_ONNX
stripped from its real compile command: 0 errors.

Fall back to the Fast model during GUI preparation
When a GUI user requests Best on a fresh install and the BiRefNet download fails while U²-Net remains available, this only attempts ensureModelBlocking(Best). The TripoSR/TRELLIS.2 worker later switches to Fast only if that model is already cached; it cannot download it there, so background removal instead runs with a missing path and silently uses the original image. Use the resolving fallback on the main thread, or explicitly ensure Fast after the Best attempt fails.

Avoid retrying the Best download twice for TRELLIS.2
With TRELLIS.2 and the default checked “Remove background” option, this tier-specific download is followed by the generic background-model download at lines 562–565. If BiRefNet is unavailable or stalls, both calls fail independently, so generation may repeat the same 40-minute timeout and wait up to 80 minutes before starting. Ensure the matte model only once for this backend.

Prevent this test from starting a model download.
resolveModelBlocking calls ensureModelBlocking, which downloads the model when it is absent and QTMESH_REMBG_NO_DOWNLOAD is unset. The Best branch arms a 40-minute timeout for a ~930 MB file. The GTEST_SKIP() on line 296 runs only after the call returns, so it cannot prevent the fetch. In an ONNX build with network access, this test can block the suite for tens of minutes and write ~930 MB into the user cache.
Guard with modelPresent before the call, and disable downloads for the duration of the test.

unit-tests-linux failed with "Suite BackgroundRemoverTest produced 2 skipped
test(s)" — both were mine. This repo has a strict no-skips policy, and the file
documents it right above SegmentsWhenModelPresentElseFallsBack:
Does NOT GTEST_SKIP — CI treats skipped tests as failures and the
u2net model isn't hosted yet (#769), so this must assert on every runner.
I wrote GTEST_SKIP guards directly below that note. Both now assert real
contracts on every runner instead:
* BestTierAgainstAFastModelFailsLoudly — with the model present ORT rejects
the 1024² tensor; without it the path check rejects first. Either way the
call must FAIL and hand back the original image untouched, which is the
contract that matters (the field bug returned ok=false and callers ignored
it, reconstructing the backdrop as geometry).
* ResolveDegradesBestToFastWhenUncached — an empty resolve is itself a
contract: it must only happen when neither tier is actually present, and a
non-empty resolve must point at a file that exists and match the reported
tier.
Verified against the REAL failure condition by moving both .onnx files aside to
reproduce a bare runner: 17 tests, 0 skipped, 0 failures. Also still 17/0/0 with
the models restored, so both branches are exercised.

…min fetch Two valid review findings on the main-thread model preparation. 1. NO FALLBACK. Both sites called ensureModelBlocking(requested tier). If a user picks Best on a fresh install and the ~930 MB BiRefNet fetch fails while U²-Net is fine, nothing ensures Fast — and the worker CANNOT download (ensureModelBlocking needs a nested event loop, which only the main thread has). It would find no cached model and skip matting entirely, i.e. exactly the backdrop-as-geometry failure this PR set out to fix, reached by a different route. Now both sites use resolveModelBlocking, which falls back to Fast on the main thread where the download can still happen. 2. DOUBLE DOWNLOAD. With TRELLIS.2 and "Remove background" checked (the default), the backend-specific ensure was followed by the generic one. A failing Best fetch would burn TWO 40-minute timeouts — up to 80 minutes — before generation started. A matteEnsured flag makes the generic call skip when the backend branch already handled it. Reported by CodeRabbit on #1028. A third finding — that the new test could trigger a 930 MB download — does not apply: src/test_main.cpp sets QTMESH_REMBG_NO_DOWNLOAD (among nine such guards) for the whole suite. Verified by deleting both .onnx files and running the test WITHOUT setting the variable explicitly: 0 ms, nothing downloaded. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Worked through all four findings. Two fixed, one does not apply, one filed separately. 1. No Fast fallback during GUI preparation (P2) — valid, fixed in Correct, and the consequence is worse than it first looks: the worker cannot download ( Both sites now use 2. Double Best download for TRELLIS.2 (P2) — valid, fixed in the same commit. With TRELLIS.2 and the default "Remove background", the backend-specific ensure was followed by the generic one, so a failing Best fetch could burn two 40-minute timeouts before generation even started. A 3. Test could trigger a ~930 MB download (Major) — does not apply.
Verified rather than asserted: I deleted both The 4. No HTTPS enforcement or SHA-256 verification (Major, CWE-494) — valid, but out of scope here → #1029. Confirmed: Filed as #1029 with the reproduction, the full consumer list, and a concrete fix (reject non-HTTPS; verify against the HF LFS 30 tests passing locally. |

Implements #1016 (epic #818 Track C2) — the epic's first-listed quick win, and the third C-item shipped, which satisfies the epic's "at least three of C1–C6" acceptance criterion.
The model is exported, parity-verified and hosted in both the aggregate repo and its own mirror, so this works on first use.
What ships
BackgroundRemover::Quality::{Fast, Best}— U²-Net at 320² (Apache-2.0, unchanged default) and BiRefNet at 1024² (MIT, ~930 MB). Both share ImageNet normalisation and NCHW layout, so the inference path is parameterised by edge length rather than forked.qtmesh generate3d --matting fast|best(best implies--remove-bg)generate_mesh_from_image { "matting": "best" }Default stays Fast everywhere — Best is a ~930 MB download and several CPU-seconds, so it is strictly opt-in and no existing caller changes behaviour.
BiRefNet is not trivially exportable
Three blockers, each verified rather than worked around:
torchvision::deform_conv2dhas no ONNX representation. I checked whether it was optional first — it is not: the checkpoint carries 150 deformable tensors, so disablingASPPDeformablewould discard trained weights and silently change the model. The exporter decomposes it into GridSample + MatMul, verified againsttorchvision.ops.deform_conv2dto ~7e-07 on every kernel size BiRefNet uses (1×1, 3×3, 7×7), modulation mask included. The exported graph contains zero custom ops — default ONNX domain only, with exactly 20 GridSample nodes matching the 20 deformable convs.birefnet.pydoesfrom torchvision.ops import deform_conv2d, binding the symbol into its own namespace. The script now patches every loaded module and fails loudly if it patches none.Same discipline as the depth export (#1018): a licence gate that refuses anything outside the permissive allow-list before downloading weights, pinned input dims with a runtime-size guard, torch-vs-ORT parity assertions (1.5e-07), and a refusal to write a graph with non-finite output. Plus one check depth did not need — a synthetic-disc sanity test, because a matte that is merely finite can still segment nothing and a constant field would pass parity happily.
A field bug this PR also fixes
The first GUI build had the tier set but the Fast model still loaded, so a 1024² tensor hit U²-Net's fixed 320² graph:
ORT threw,
removeBackgroundreturnedok=false, and TRELLIS.2 treats that as "no matte available" and carries on — reconstructing the studio backdrop as a flat slab behind the subject. Ticking the box made output worse than leaving it off. Fixed at all four call sites so tier and model can never disagree. It stayed invisible because nothing logged the matte stage, so the stage now reports the model it loaded and shouts on failure:
Two regression tests pin the contract: a deliberate tier/model mismatch must fail loudly, never return an unmatted image that looks like a successful cut-out; and
resolveModelBlocking's reported tier must always match the file it returns.Measured on a real asset
Full end-to-end pair on a 1254² goblin with a light-grey backdrop, identical settings (TRELLIS.2, balanced, 25k tris, 2048px, seed 42), matte the only variable.
Matte quality
Why the mesh comes out more detailed — and it is not a resolution difference. Both tiers hand TRELLIS.2 an identical 1434×1434 image; the 320/1024 figure is the matte model's internal size only. The cause is how much subject survives:
45:1 in favour of recovered subject. U²-Net erases finger tips, ear edges and silhouette detail; TRELLIS.2 can only reconstruct what survives the matte. The Best mesh has defined ear tips, a layered harness with straps and pauldron, and better-articulated fingers.
Aggregate stats look similar (22.8k vs 22.6k verts) because the difference is concentrated at thin extremities — z-range 0.2050 → 0.2210.

BackgroundRemoverTestcases. Also fixes a latent bug in an existing test:SegmentsWhenModelPresentElseFallsBackasserted the output keeps its input size, but with a model present the 0.85 foreground-ratio crop legitimately changes it — it only ever passed because CI has no cached model and always took the fallback branch. Confirmed pre-existing by stashing.Closes #1016.
