Change

Fixes #751: push alerts reached every device even while the person was at a window of the app.

Rule: while any WebSocket connection of this server says its page is in use, meaning document.visibilityState === "visible" and document.hasFocus() (the same test PaneTerminal's inUse makes), no device gets a push alert. This matches the reporter's expectation: if any client is in focus, no device is notified. The test push (Send test) is exempt.

  • shared/protocol.ts: new client frame { type: "presence"; active: boolean }. Older servers ignore unknown frames, so no feature flag is needed.
  • Client: src/lib/presence.ts watches focus, blur, visibilitychange and pagehide. Every PC connection (MachineSession) passes it to HerdrSocket.setPresence, which sends it on change and replays it after the role on every reconnect.
  • Server (server/index.ts): a present set of in-use connections. It is updated before relaying, so a page that only has a remote PC open still counts: alerts for every PC go out from the connection server. A connection leaves the set on close or device revocation.
  • server/push.ts: new inUse option, checked when an alert would go out (after its delay), not when the status changed. A window brought forward during the 10 s/60 s wait therefore still holds it back. onEnded is held the same way.
  • Demo transport answers presence (no alerts there). docs/guide.md states the rule.

Maintainer note: a desktop window left focused while you walk away holds every alert until it loses focus or is hidden (screen lock or sleep usually hides it). If that turns out too strict, an idle timeout is a possible follow-up.

Validation

  • Reproduction first: HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./server/push.test.ts -t '#751' failed before the fix (2 fail: 2 alerts and 1 alert leaked), and passes after (33/33 in the file).
  • HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./src/lib/ws.test.ts ./src/lib/machineSession.test.ts ./server/push.test.ts: 62 pass. Removing the reconnect replay line makes the new ws test fail (mutation checked).
  • Contract test (live isolated herdr): CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run bun test --timeout 15000 ./server/api.contract.test.ts -t 'web push': 7 pass. It covers: no alert while a connected page is in use, an alert once it says it is not, and an alert again after an in-use page closes. Mutation: dropping inUse from createPushService makes it fail (1 alert leaked).
  • bun run check fast (generated types, typecheck, build, unit): EXIT 0, 2455 pass, 0 fail.
  • Real-browser QA on the built client (check run --build, headless Chromium, isolated herdr, fake push device):
    • S1: page visible and focused, sends presence true, a blocked agent gives 0 alerts.
    • S2: page hidden, sends presence false, 1 alert.
    • S3: page visible again, sends presence true, 0 new alerts.
    • PASS. Headless Chrome never hides a tab, so S2/S3 simulate visibilitychange inside the real page; the app's own listeners send the frames.
  • After merging origin/main (5792d71, fix(ui): keep a pane's lens when an agent starts or exits in it #755) into the branch: CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check fast EXIT 0 (2462 pass, 0 fail); web-push contracts 7/7.
  • CodeRabbit fixes (37ea47f): inUse is checked again after the title lookup (new unit case; it fails without the recheck), and the contract helper waits only for frames its own report caused. Push unit tests 34/34; web-push contracts 7/7; typecheck clean.

A page reports whether it is visible and focused over its WebSocket (presence). While any connection of the server says so, no device gets a push alert; it is checked when the alert would go out, and the test push is exempt. Fixes #751.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Push alerts are suppressed across all devices while any connected app window is visible and focused, then resume when no window is in use.
    • Test push notifications continue to send regardless of window activity.

Walkthrough

Clients report whether a page is visible and focused. The server tracks active clients and suppresses status and ended-pane push alerts across devices while any client is active. Test pushes remain unaffected.

Changes

Presence-based push alerts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Client presence reporting
shared/protocol.ts, src/lib/presence.ts, src/lib/ws.ts, src/lib/machineSession.ts, site/demo/transport.ts, src/lib/ws.test.ts
The client reports page presence as visibility or focus changes. The socket sends the current state when connected and replays it after reconnecting. The demo transport ignores presence frames.
Server presence tracking
server/index.ts
The server parses presence frames, tracks active clients, forwards relayed presence frames, and clears presence when a client disconnects or is revoked.
Push suppression and validation
server/push.ts, server/push.test.ts, server/api.contract.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md, docs/guide.md
The push service checks active presence before sending status and ended-pane alerts. Tests cover suppression, resumed delivery, delayed alerts, test pushes, and disconnect handling. The changelog and guide describe the behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c76a9

The previously reported alert-timing and test-retry concerns are addressed at the reviewed head. The change is mergeable after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 37ea4

A device granted view-only access can now silence notifications for every device served by the connection server. Existing access and revocation checks limit exposure, but notification-control authority is broader than the device’s read-only role.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: New presence handling gives watch-only paired devices endpoint-independent, server-wide alert-suppression authority. A caller with valid watch-device access can report active presence and keep its connection open, preventing status and ended alerts for every subscription, including events from other PCs. Existing observe-mode enforcement does not constrain this branch.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — One accepted presence report can suppress all subscriptions and local or remote machine events handled by its connection server. Forwarding may also affect the selected upstream PC if that server implements presence suppression and delivers push. Deployed reach beyond those configured relationships is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A caller holding valid watch-device access can upgrade a WebSocket and submit presence active=true before role-specific dispatch. The resulting global predicate suppresses other devices’ alerts without requiring pane attachment or subscription endpoint identifiers. This is notification-control expansion, not a terminal-execution or credential-access bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The normal access policy and browser-origin check still guard WebSocket upgrades, and watch devices remain forced into observe mode. Revocation removes presence before closing the connection. The pre-pairing open-access mode predates this PR; this change does not introduce that ingress policy.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Suppressed notifications are discarded rather than queued for release. Status is recorded before suppression, scheduled sends settle after returning, and ended alerts return without delivery. Clearing presence enables subsequent qualifying transitions but does not replay the suppressed events.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make server-wide notification-suppression authority explicit for paired devices. If watch access is intended to remain view-only, exclude those devices from the global gate or require a separate owner-granted permission, while preserving the cross-device rule for eligible devices.
