Closes #674. The address says where the app is and opens there; #674 has the reasoning. With no link, startup is as on main.

Change

src/lib/deepLink.ts (pure, unit-tested) reads and writes ?machine&ws=<id>-<slug>&pane&view&file&settings&section&new&cwd&name&agent&sidebar. App reads it once at load and writes it back from one effect.

  • Where. The PC, the workspace by herdr's id plus a short slug of its name, the pane and its lens, a file open over it, a Settings page and group, the New workspace dialog with its fields, and a collapsed desktop sidebar (sidebar=shown opens a phone's drawer).
  • Slugs. The slug is readable, and it checks the id: herdr's ids are short counters a new session can hand out again, so a slug that another open workspace has wins over a reused id. A renamed workspace keeps its links (resolveLink).
  • History. Another pane or PC is a pushState, so Back returns to the last one. A lens switch, a Settings page, the dialog's fields, and a pane the app picked itself all replace the entry. Back and Forward re-select the entry's pane and draw its lens the way a tapped alert's is (notificationViewTarget, never stored).
  • Settings. It keeps its own entries (lib/settingsHistory.ts); the address of the entry shown carries its page and group. Landing back under the dialog rewrites an address that still names a page that is no longer shown.
  • Landing. A link settles against the PC's roster once that is in.
    • A pane that has closed opens the pane its workspace's row opens.
    • A link to nothing open, or to a PC that isn't set up here, says so in a .header-note pill for a moment.
    • A pane picked before the link lands supersedes it.
    • Nothing is written while locked or before the roster is in, so a link survives the access gate.
  • New workspace dialog. ?new=workspace|tab fills its fields (capped; an agent herdr does not offer gives way to the last one picked) and never creates anything. The fields reach the address 400 ms after they rest, because Safari refuses bursts of history writes.
  • Settings groups take a section name. &section= scrolls to and focuses a group, generalizing the update notice's pointer to Updates.
  • Copy link in the header's More menu, for a phone without an address bar.
  • Focus. A pane that mounts under an open modal no longer takes its focus (modalOpen, lib/focus.ts). A link that opens Settings at startup mounts the composer beneath the dialog, and its autofocus pulled the keyboard out.

New strings have ko/ja/zh entries. CHANGELOG, DESIGN.md (the note pill) and src/AGENTS.md (a Deep links row; the push row no longer says the query is stripped) are updated.

Validation

  • bun run check fast: all steps pass (unit tests included, with a new src/lib/deepLink.test.ts).
  • bun run check browser: passes on its own herdr, 20 scripts, including the new scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts, whose ten cases cover:
    • workspace and closed-pane links;
    • Back/Forward and the lens;
    • Settings pages and groups, including focus;
    • slugs and reused ids;
    • files, including a reload followed by Back;
    • Copy link;
    • the dialog (filled, and nothing created);
    • the sidebar on desktop and phone;
    • an unknown PC.
  • Three existing scripts changed, all by expectation only:
    • settings-pages-demo-regression: Back out of Settings now returns to the pane's address instead of the bare start.
    • notification-view-regression: the alert's address now names the pane and the lens shown, instead of being taken off.
    • ci-browser.test.ts: the lane has 20 scripts.
  • notification-startup-regression and file-viewer-regression each caught a bug during development, fixed here (an explicit pick before the link lands; a restored viewer re-opening after Back).
  • In use on my own install for the last two days.
  • Screenshots below are from the demo: Copy link in the More menu, and the note a link to a closed pane shows.

?machine&ws=<id>-<slug>&pane&view&file&settings&section&new&cwd&name&agent&sidebar, parsed
and written by the pure lib/deepLink.ts:

- Where: the PC, the workspace by herdr's id and a short slug of its name (readable, and a
check: herdr's ids are short counters a new session can hand out again, so a slug another
open workspace has wins over a reused id; a renamed workspace keeps its links), the pane and
its lens, a file open over it, a Settings page and group, the New workspace dialog with its
fields, and a collapsed sidebar on a desktop (a phone's drawer opened by sidebar=shown).
- History: another pane or PC is pushState, so Back returns to the last one; a lens, a
Settings page, a dialog's fields and a pane the app picked itself replace the entry. Back and
Forward re-select the entry's pane, its lens drawn as notificationViewTarget like a tapped
alert's, never stored. Settings keeps its own entries (lib/settingsHistory.ts); the address of
the one shown carries its page and group, and landing back under the dialog rewrites an
address that still names a page no longer shown.
- Landing: read once at load, settled against the PC's roster once it is in (resolveLink). A
pane that has closed opens the pane its workspace's row opens; a link to nothing open, or to a
PC that is not set up here, says so in the header for a moment; a pane picked before the link
lands supersedes it. Nothing is written while locked or before the roster is in, so a link
  survives the access gate.
- The New workspace dialog: ?new=workspace|tab fills its fields (capped; an agent herdr does
not offer gives way to the last one picked) and never creates anything; its fields reach the
address 400 ms after they rest, as Safari refuses a burst of history writes.
- Settings groups take a `section` name (SettingsGroup), and &section= scrolls to and focuses
one, generalizing the update notice's pointer to Updates.
- Copy link in the header's More menu, for a phone without an address bar.
- A pane that mounts under an open modal no longer takes its focus (modalOpen, lib/focus.ts):
a link that opens Settings at startup mounts the composer beneath the dialog.

scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts (ten cases) runs in ci-browser.sh. Two existing scripts
expected the address to be taken off: settings-pages-demo-regression now expects Back out of
Settings to return to the pane's address, and notification-view-regression expects the alert's
address to name the pane and lens shown.

Change: Feature · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 23cc1

The change is mergeable with a small changelog follow-up: the entry still includes the PR link and author name normally added by a maintainer at release.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 23cc1

Deep links expand externally supplied navigation targets and put workspace names, file paths and dialog drafts into browser addresses. Existing access restrictions and explicit creation actions remain intact. A bounded history-recovery issue remains, but no authorization bypass or automatic command execution was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Browser-history navigation does not share initial landing's missing-machine recovery. If a historical entry names a machine removed from configuration, onPop can select its raw machine and pane identifiers and clear pending resolution, leaving navigation on an unavailable target instead of applying the local fallback. Server endpoint validation contains the failure; this is a client recovery defect, not a demonstrated authorization bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — A crafted link can supply a file path for automatic preview on the selected configured machine after landing. Existing file authority includes absolute and home-relative paths readable by the server's OS user, not merely files beneath the workspace directory. Watching devices are denied file reads and directory listings.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The new file-link caller expands externally supplied preview-path reachability, but the inspected flow does not establish an authorization bypass or delivery of file contents to the link author. Text is rendered as text, file responses prohibit MIME sniffing, and non-PDF responses are sandboxed. The existing broader file authority is therefore not treated as a newly introduced workspace-isolation vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The full application remains behind the access gate, and remote WebSocket targets must exist in the server endpoint registry. Settings links initialize navigation state. Creation links prefill a dialog; workspace or tab creation remains in its explicit submit handler, with unavailable linked agents reconciled against the offered agent list.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — File preview history retains its original machine and pane tuple, and APIs bind to machine context. Terminal focus on pane changes and on leaving automatic selection now checks for an open modal, reducing accidental keyboard routing beneath linked dialogs.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the metadata-sharing implications of copied links explicit, or offer a reduced-detail link that omits file paths and creation drafts. This is a privacy hardening option, not evidence of credential leakage.

- **Deep links.** The address now says where you are, and opens there: the PC, the workspace (by id and a short slug of its name, so `?ws=w2K-herdr-web-ui&pane=w2K:p1&view=chat` reads like the place), the pane and its lens, an open file, a Settings page and group (`&settings=about&section=updates`), the New workspace dialog with its fields filled (`?new=workspace&cwd=…&name=…&agent=…`; a link never creates anything), and a collapsed sidebar (`&sidebar=hidden`). Opening another pane is a history entry, so Back returns to the last one. A link to a pane that has closed opens its workspace, a link to nothing open says so, and **Copy link** in the header's More menu copies the address on a phone.

Keeping this line, as current practice on main shows. The outside contributors' entries merged into ## [Unreleased] today (#650, #649) carry the same ([#N](…) by @login) line, and src/AGENTS.md has the link added in a commit after gh pr create, with missing ones filled in at release, so it is not added twice. src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx:1379-1384
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard the auto-selection focus effect with modalOpen().

When a pane is auto-selected, a browser Back or Forward event can call selectTarget while the command palette remains open. selectTarget changes autoSelected from true to false. The effect at src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx:1383 then focuses the terminal without checking the open aria-modal surface. This moves focus out of the command palette while the pane mounts. Add the same modal guard used by the neighboring focus paths.

… when a picked pane stops being auto-selected

CodeRabbit on devswha#675: Back or Forward can call selectTarget while a modal such as the command
palette is open, and a pane the app had auto-selected becoming one the user picked focused
the grid out of the modal. The autoSelected effect now has the modalOpen() guard its
neighbouring mount and attach paths have; the remaining focus calls answer a key-bar tap,
a paste or drop, or a prompt answer, which a modal cannot be over. deep-link-demo-regression
pins it (fails without the guard).

@coderabbitai The outside-diff note on PaneTerminal.tsx (the autoSelected focus effect) is valid and fixed in d0eb538: the effect now has the same modalOpen() guard as the mount and attach paths. I checked the other focus calls in the file; they answer a key-bar tap, a paste or drop, or a prompt answer, which no modal can be over. deep-link-demo-regression.ts gained a case for it (auto-selected pane, command palette open, Back): it fails without the guard and passes with it. check fast and check browser pass.

@phirschybar Thanks. I verified the modalOpen() guard in the autoSelected focus effect and the regression case that checks focus stays in the command palette after Back.

The focus finding is addressed. I did not rerun check fast or check browser; those results are from your validation.

The combined roster is cached, so a pane made just before a link opened
(`?pane=` from a test, or a notification tapped right after the pane
started) could be missing from the first roster the link landed on. The
link then showed "That link's workspace is closed" for a pane that was
open. secret-input-regression caught it: the note widened the header and
pushed the masked input's Cancel under the terminal.

A link that names something the roster lacks now re-reads its PC's session
first, as the selection fallback below it already does, and a failed read
settles the link without a note.

Thank you, @phirschybar, for implementing deep links. I have carried your commits, preserving their authorship, into #762. The replacement also integrates main's pane-lens fix and a small phone-header overflow fix found during browser QA. The changelog credits both this PR by you and the carry PR. Local verification has passed, and the required CI checks are running on #762. Thank you for the contribution.

## Summary

Carry @phirschybar's deep-link implementation and commits into the
maintainer branch without changing their authorship. The address names
the PC, workspace (ID and readable slug), pane, lens, file, Settings
page/group, New workspace draft, and sidebar state; navigation opens
that place and keeps Back/Forward aligned with the app.

- Keep Settings history separate from pane navigation, including modal
keyboard focus.
- Resolve a missing pane to its workspace and an unknown PC to the local
PC with a header note.
- Keep the owning PC's IDs together. A positive browser scenario used
two fictional PCs with colliding pane IDs and selected the remote pane,
lens, Settings page, and remote API paths correctly.
- Fix a phone overflow found during QA: transient notes now use the
flexible header context and ellipsize, leaving the lens and More
controls visible. The new demo assertion fails before the fix (522px
header in a 390px viewport) and passes afterward.
- Merge main's #755 (`5792d71`) as `78bc591`, retaining both the settled
pane-lens behavior and deep-link landing/address/notification handling,
dialog prefill/draft fields, and both changelog entries.

## Review findings

- #675's CodeRabbit modal focus finding is fixed by the existing
`modalOpen()` guard in `PaneTerminal` (`d0eb538`) and covered by the
demo's Back-under-modal scenario.
- The suggestion to remove full changelog PR links is declined: the
maintainer instructions require full PR URLs and `by @login`
attribution. Separate commit `5b9759e` credits both #675 by @phirschybar
and #762 with full links.
- The phone header overflow found in manual QA is fixed in `b6ee541`
with a red/green browser regression and a matching DESIGN update. No CSS
tokens changed.
- #762's actionable CodeRabbit finding is fixed in `2b873ba`: the URL
writer waits for the selected PC's snapshot and runs again when it
arrives. A staged fetch/SSE test fails before the fix and passes after
it; owned-browser phone captures prove the original address remains
while the local roster is held, then changes to the local pane after
release. The thread is resolved.

## Verification

Post-merge checks first exercised `78bc591` or its identical resolved
content. Current head `2b873ba854c9797bec3c325e2669c6195ccc8916` also
includes the separate changelog credit and verified fallback-roster fix.
Deep-link, Settings, fast checks, owned-browser held/ready proof, and
both touched isolated regressions passed after the fix. All three
required GitHub checks are green on this head. No tests were disabled or
weakened. Herdr-backed runs used disposable sessions/configuration,
never the user's session.

| Command/scenario | Result |
| --- | --- |
| `bun run check fast` (initial branch) | PASS; verified report, exit 0
|
| `git archive origin/main` extracted into `/tmp/l8-main.508B4o`,
dependency symlink, copied `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` |
Expected FAIL on old main `7e12a89`: workspace-selection assertion timed
out at line 66. Archive removed and absence verified. The shell
wrapper's exit capture was malformed (wrapper exit 2); the actual
TimeoutError is captured independently. |
| `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` (before phone assertion) |
PASS |
| `bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` (before merge) | PASS
|
| `bun run check run --build bun scripts/ui-regression.ts` and `bun run
check run --build bun scripts/file-viewer-regression.ts` (initial 2-slot
admission) | NOT RUN: admission refused, exit 1. Both were subsequently
run successfully with `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8`. |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/ui-regression.ts` (before merge) | PASS; includes exported
notification-startup and notification-view checks |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/file-viewer-regression.ts` (before merge) | PASS |
| `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` with the added phone
assertion, before the App fix | Expected FAIL: header scrollWidth 522 >
viewport 390; More right edge 522.40625 |
| `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` and `bun
scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` after the phone fix | PASS |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check fast` (superseded pre-merge run) |
INTERRUPTED, exit 130 to integrate newly merged main; typecheck/build
had passed. Not counted as a full PASS. |
| `git fetch origin && git merge origin/main` | PASS after resolving
App, NewSessionDialog, and CHANGELOG conflicts while preserving both
sides; merge commit `78bc591` |
| `bun run typecheck` on resolved merge content | PASS |
| `HERDR_TEST_MODE=unit bun test ./src/lib/deepLink.test.ts
./src/lib/paneLens.test.ts ./src/lib/i18n.test.ts` | PASS: 39 tests, 0
failures |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check fast` (merged branch) | PASS: workflow
syntax, generated types, typecheck, build, unit tests; verified report
with unchanged source |
| `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` (merged branch) | PASS: all
12 assertions, including phone note containment and modal focus |
| `bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` (merged branch) |
PASS: English 390/320px, Korean/Japanese/Chinese 320px, page/section
navigation, Back/Forward and resize |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/ui-regression.ts` (merged branch) | PASS: notification
startup/lens handling and #755 default-view cases, including a shell
retaining its terminal when an agent starts |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/file-viewer-regression.ts` (merged branch) | PASS: viewer
reload, Back/Forward, nested Settings/Add PC/palette, phone/desktop,
file/folder URI and highlighting |
| Owned-browser fictional remote-PC link with colliding pane IDs | PASS:
`qa-box/w1E:p1`, `QA remote`, `Remote infra`, Chat, Terminal Settings;
closing Settings retains the PC/pane address. Remote
conversation/commands/prompt paths observed. This is fixture routing
proof, not a live remote attach claim. |
| Owned-browser More/Copy link and `?ws=w1C-infra&pane=w1C%3Ap1`,
dark/light, 1280x860 and 390x844 | PASS: eight screenshots inspected.
Phone header scroll/client widths both 390; note x60..232 and More
x338..378, without overlap. |
| LSP diagnostics | App and demo script clean before merge; merged
NewSessionDialog clean. App diagnostics subsequently hit an LSP
freshness timeout; both merged typecheck runs passed. |
| `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` with an explicitly held
local snapshot, before the review fix | Expected FAIL: the original
`machine=unregistered-PC` was replaced before roster delivery |
| `bun scripts/deep-link-demo-regression.ts` after the review fix |
PASS: all 13 assertions, including address preservation before release
and correct local pane afterward |
| `bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts` after the review fix |
PASS |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check fast` after the review fix | PASS:
verified unchanged working-tree source containing the guard and
regression; typecheck, build and units passed |
| Owned-browser phone held/ready fallback scenario | PASS: original
unknown-PC/pane address retained with no local pane, then local `w1C:p1`
and its address after explicit roster release; both screenshots
inspected |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/ui-regression.ts` on `2b873ba` | PASS: verified unchanged
source; notification startup/lens, settled pane lens, modal and other UI
cases |
| `CHECK_MAX_RUNS=8 bun run check run --build bun
scripts/file-viewer-regression.ts` on `2b873ba` | PASS: verified
unchanged source |
| GitHub Integration and browser, first attempt on `2b873ba` | FAIL in
unchanged `scripts/chat-size-regression.ts`: Playwright
`clock.pauseAt(new Date())` reported `Cannot fast-forward to the past`.
No deep-link failure or source change in that script. |
| `gh run rerun 38103607171 --failed` | One authorized retry; PASS. No
test was weakened or skipped. |
| `gh pr checks 762` on `2b873ba` | PASS / exit 0: Fast checks,
Integration and browser, Native Windows install; Native macOS session
identity and CodeRabbit also pass |

Captured logs and verified check reports are in
`/tmp/lane-reports/l8-evidence/`. Each isolated run cleaned its
session/configuration; all owned browser profiles and loopback servers
were removed/stopped.
