fix(herdr-core): name a pane's agent by its terminal's platform - #3347
herdr-core agent naming now reads the platform of the terminal it names, not of the Ovis server.
Which platform:
A terminal on this PC's own core takes this PC's platform.
Another machine's terminal (hc machine add) is judged by its folder: C:\…, c:/…, \\server\share and \\?\C:\… are Windows. /home/u and WSL's /mnt/c/… are Linux or macOS.
//server/share, or an empty, relative or missing folder, is unknown.
When it's unknown or only "not Windows": a program name counts only if every possible platform reads it the same way. Windows' cmd and npm's letta.cmd launcher name no agent there, while claude still does.
Decision for item 1: a Windows terminal started directly as letta.cmd (npm's launcher) is named letta, because that is how Windows runs Letta. The same file name on Linux or macOS still names nothing. This is documented on processAgent.
Events: the snapshot and the adapter's status, foreground and title events use the same rule. A foreground's own folder is kept, so a later foreground event can correct the platform.
No foreground: when hc reports no process in front, the start command names an agent only if it runs the agent directly (letta.cmd, node …/letta). A shell start (cmd.exe /c letta.cmd, pwsh -c letta, bash -lc letta) names none.
hc reports no operating system anywhere in its API, so the folder shape is the only signal for another machine's terminal.
Validation
Failing-first tests:
The first commit's cross-platform detector test in server/herdr-core/snapshot.test.ts.
In the review round, five more, all of which failed before their fix:
agent-identity naming when the platform is unknown or only "not Windows"
the folder-to-platform table
another machine's foreground naming
the start-command fallback, with shell-launcher negatives
an adapter event-subscription test on a machine-scoped core
bun run check fast passes on current main.
Not run: a real Windows machine or a real hc machine add.
Review
A Codex (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh) adversarial review ran before this PR opened and found three MEDIUMs, all fixed in the second commit:
An unknown folder fell back to the server's platform.
Event paths kept a stale or unknown platform.
A directly started letta.cmd with no foreground was unnamed.
The review also asked for an explicit policy for //server/share, UNC and WSL paths, which the table above now gives.

Bug Fixes
Agent names in herdr-core panes are now detected more accurately on Windows, Linux, and macOS, including terminals started directly as agents before their foreground process is reported.
When a remote machine’s platform is unknown or its working-directory path is ambiguous, agent detection uses safer fallback behavior.
The change makes herdr-core agent naming use the terminal’s platform, inferred from local host configuration or remote working-directory paths. It also detects directly launched agents when no foreground process is reported and carries platform-aware identity through snapshots and adapter events.
Changes: Platform-aware herdr-core agent naming
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Platform-specific process detection server/agent-identity.ts, server/agent-identity.test.ts
Process detection evaluates candidate platforms and returns an identity only when the results agree. Pane detection uses the reported agent first, then foreground arguments or launcher arguments.
Host and terminal platform in snapshots server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts, server/herdr-core/snapshot.test.ts
Snapshot code classifies the core host and infers remote terminal platforms from working-directory paths. Pane agent detection receives that platform context, and tests cover platform inference and agent resolution.
The adapter passes host context into snapshots and subscriptions, retains terminal cwd and argv, and resolves agent identity for status, foreground, and title events. Tests cover identity changes as foreground cwd values change. The changelog describes the platform-specific naming behavior.
devswha/ovis#3308: Introduces the agent identity functions and contracts that this change updates.
devswha/ovis#2442: Introduces the snapshot and adapter paths that this change extends with host context.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(herdr-core): name a pane's agent by its terminal's platform" matches the main change. The PR changes agent naming to use the terminal's platform instead of the Ovis server's platform, and the raw summary confirms this across agent-identity, adapter, and snapshot files. The title is concise, specific, and follows a conventional-commit style. It is 63 characters, within a reasonable length.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's two main sections. The Change section explains the problem (agent naming used the Ovis server's platform), the resulting behavior (per-terminal platform rules, folder-shape classification, unknown-platform handling, start-command fallback), and the decision on the letta.cmd case. It links issue #3319. The Validation section lists the failing-first tests, the fast check result on current main, and what was not run (real Windows and real hc machine add testing). The template asks for the full check or contract-test status for HTTP/WS changes. The description does not state whether bun run check full was run, and it does not mention contract-test coverage. These gaps are minor and do not block the check.

Explanation
[#3319] Objective 1, decide and document the Windows letta.cmd case: the PR decides that a Windows terminal started directly as letta.cmd names letta. The decision is documented in the processAgent doc comment (server/agent-identity.ts) and in the PR description. agentOn strips .cmd only when the platform is windows. On linux or macos the name stays letta.cmd and names no agent. With an unknown platform, processAgent compares all candidates. Windows names letta and Linux names nothing, so the result is null.
[#3319] Objective 2, use the terminal platform rather than the Ovis server platform: agentOf (server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts) calls terminalPlatform(foreground cwd or terminal cwd, host). A local core uses the server platform, which is correct because the core runs on this PC. A remote core (elsewhere) infers the platform from the folder shape. Missing, relative, and //server/share folders return null. subscribe (server/herdr-core/adapter.ts) uses the same agentOf path for status, foreground, and title events. It keeps each terminal cwd and argv, and it passes the host from coreHost.
The PID-reuse note in #3319 is labelled not reproduced and upstream. The PR does not claim to change it, and no change is required here.
Unresolved uncertainty: this review did not run the test suite or type check. The test and changelog files were not read. The launcher fallback assumes hc terminal records carry argv, and that was not confirmed. The scope of platform in createAnswers (adapter.ts) was not confirmed by a read. The author reports that bun run check fast passes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed hunks in server/agent-identity.ts, server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts, and server/herdr-core/adapter.ts each connect to #3319. ProgramPlatform, candidatesOf, and the multi-candidate processAgent implement the ambiguous-platform rule. terminalPlatform, coreHost, windowsPath, and the CoreHost type implement the folder-based platform choice. paneAgent and launcher implement the no-foreground start-command rule and the letta.cmd decision. foregroundOf keeps cwd, and subscribe keeps cwd and argv, so event paths use the terminal platform. buildSnapshot and paneOf pass the host through. The buildSnapshot default coreHost(false) keeps existing callers on local behavior. Removing the paneAgent platform default forces callers to pass the platform, which the objective needs.
No unrelated behavior change appears in the three inspected source diffs. The changelog entry and tests document or verify the same objectives, so they are supporting changes. Not inspected: the changelog, the test files, and other repository callers of paneAgent or processAgent. A caller that omits the new required platform argument would be a compile issue, not a scope issue, and the author reports the check passes.

Agent detection named the process in front of a herdr-core terminal by the Ovis
server's platform. A terminal may be another machine's (machine-scope.ts), so a
Linux server viewing a Windows terminal running letta.cmd named no agent, and a
Windows server viewing a Linux terminal hid Command Code's cmd as if it were the
Windows command prompt.
hc reports no platform (Terminal, Foreground, MachineView and CoreInfo carry
none), so the platform comes from the terminal's own cwd, which hc always sends:
a drive-letter or UNC path is Windows. A POSIX path seen from a Windows server is
null, since detection tells Linux and macOS apart nowhere. Otherwise the server's
platform applies, which is exact for the core's own terminals. paneAgent now
takes the platform explicitly instead of defaulting to process.platform.
Decision on the #3308 behaviour change: a Windows terminal started directly as
letta.cmd (npm's shim) is named letta. That is intended, because Windows runs
letta from that shim. The same file name on Linux or macOS still names nothing.
This is documented on processAgent.

…s unknown
Review follow-ups to the terminal-platform fix for #3319:
- A terminal of this PC's own core runs on this PC's platform. Only another
machine's (otherMachine) is read off its folder. A drive letter or a backslash
share is Windows, and a / path is POSIX (WSL's /mnt/c included). A missing or
relative folder is unknown, and so is //server/share, which is a share to
Windows and a root to POSIX.
- Where the platform is unknown, or only known to be POSIX, a foreground name
counts only when every candidate platform reads it alike. So Windows' cmd and
npm's .cmd shims name no agent there.
- foregroundOf keeps the foreground's cwd, and the platform is read from it
first. The adapter's event paths keep each terminal's cwd and argv and use the
same rule as the snapshot, so a foreground event corrects the platform.
- With no process in front reported, the terminal's start argv names an agent
only when it runs one directly. A shell launcher (sh -c, cmd /c, pwsh -c)
names none.

…is in front
Two review findings on the terminal-platform fix for #3319, each with a
failing-first test:
- paneAgent fell back to a terminal's launcher argv whenever hc reported no
process in front, so a terminal started as `claude` that now runs Codex was
named Claude, and Claude's prompt parser and answer keys applied to Codex.
No runtime tells a process's start time (hc names a terminal's own pid and
the pid in front, herdr's process rows pids), so the same live pid is the
proof: the launcher names an agent only while the process it started is
still the one in front. The adapter's event path carries the terminal's pid
too, so events and the snapshot name a pane alike.
- A backslash separates a path on Windows alone. The platform agreement check
split on it for every platform, so `/home/u/a\claude` on POSIX named Claude.
Only the Windows candidate splits at a backslash now, and a platform
nothing tells names nobody where the two readings differ.

…ing is named in front
A foreground the runtime names is the program in front, even as the pid the
terminal started: a claude start that exec()ed bash keeps pid 7 and is bash now,
so it names no agent. The start is read only when the runtime names no program in
front (no argv and no name). Found by the merge pass.

The merge pass's Codex reviews reproduced three HIGHs over two rounds (a launcher fallback named Claude while Codex ran; a POSIX file name with a backslash named Letta; an exec'd launcher keeping its PID still named the old agent), each fixed with a failing-first test; re-run at this head: none reproduce.

GitHub's run had failed server/start-screen.contract.test.ts, which passed in the gate's integration group.
