fix(system): show a Mac's memory meter, read from vm_stat as Activity Monitor's Memory Used - #3281
On macOS the sidebar's PC load shows CPU and disk but no memory meter: GET /api/system answers memory: null there, because Node's os.freemem() counts only free pages, so the file cache would
read as used and a Mac would look full (server/system-stats.ts, realIo.memory()).
This reads macOS memory from /usr/bin/vm_stat instead, the same way Activity Monitor computes
"Memory Used":
plus the pages the compressor occupies (Pages occupied by compressor)
times the page size vm_stat prints in its header, over os.totalmem() (hw.memsize). The file
cache and free pages are not used memory, as on Linux (total − MemAvailable).
parseVmStat(text, total) is a pure function next to parseMeminfo. It returns null when the page
size or a count is missing, or the total is not known, so a number that was not measured is still
never shown. App Memory never goes below 0, and used never goes above the total.
vm_stat runs only when a reading is taken (the existing sampler and its FRESH_MS sharing), with
a 2 s timeout, by absolute path, stderr ignored, as the other ps/lsof reads in server/ do.
Nothing new runs in the background. A failed or timed-out run gives null, as before.
Linux and Windows are unchanged. The SystemReport shape is unchanged (memory was already { used, total, percent } | null), so the client and the remote bridge need nothing new.
docs/guide.md ("See each PC's load") and the shared/system.ts field comment now say macOS reads
memory from vm_stat. A changelog fragment is in changelog.d/mac-memory-meter.md.
Validation
bun test server/system-stats.test.ts: 18 pass, 0 fail (15 before; 3 new cases).
A recorded Apple silicon vm_stat (16 KiB pages): (1170884 − 2550) + 169660 + 138348 pages.
The same with 4 KiB pages (Intel).
More purgeable than anonymous pages gives App Memory 0. A total smaller than the pages gives the total.
A missing compressor line, a missing page size, a zero total and empty text each give null.
On darwin only (it.skipIf): realIo.memory() on the machine reads a value between 0 and the total.
Mutation check: with the compressor term dropped, the two parser cases fail (16 pass, 2 fail).
On a Mac (macOS 26.5.2, Apple silicon, 48 GiB), the patched realIo.memory() against vm_stat
summed by hand, three readings taken one after the other: 40.73 / 40.79 %, 40.74 / 40.73 %,
40.79 / 40.87 % (differences +0.06, −0.01, +0.08 percentage points). os.totalmem() equalled sysctl -n hw.memsize each time.
bun run typecheck: exit 0.
bun test scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts: 12 pass, 0 fail. bun test src/conventions.test.ts: 9 pass, 0 fail.
bun run test:unit on this Mac: 12607 pass, 52 fail in 22 files, none of which imports server/system-stats.ts.
The same 22 files run on origin/main (7734c77) here fail the same tests (42 vs 43 in one bun test run; the extra one is a 5 s timeout in server/portal.test.ts, which fails 3 of 58 on both
when run alone). They are timeouts and sandbox limits of this machine, not this change.
Skipped: bun run check full (integration and browser suites, which need a herdr of their own).
No HTTP/WS contract changes, so no contract test was added.
Not compared on screen with Activity Monitor itself; the comparison above is the same sum from vm_stat.
… Monitor's Memory Used
macOS answered memory null in GET /api/system: os.freemem() counts only free
pages, so the file cache would read as used. Read /usr/bin/vm_stat instead:
App Memory (anonymous less purgeable pages) + wired + the pages the compressor
occupies, times the page size, over os.totalmem() (hw.memsize). parseVmStat is
a pure function beside parseMeminfo; a missing count or a failed run is null.
The sidebar now shows memory usage for Macs alongside each PC’s load, matching the “Memory Used” figure in Activity Monitor and excluding file cache.
Documentation
Updated the guide to describe memory reporting on macOS. Linux and Windows behavior remains unchanged.
The system now reports macOS memory usage from vm_stat. The parser accounts for anonymous, wired, and compressor pages, excludes purgeable pages, and caps usage at total memory. Tests and documentation cover the new reading.
parseVmStat calculates used memory from anonymous pages minus purgeable pages, plus wired and compressor pages. It handles 16 KiB and 4 KiB pages, invalid input, and caps usage at total memory.
realIo.memory() reads /usr/bin/vm_stat on Darwin and returns null if the command fails or its output cannot be read. The guide, system documentation, and changelog describe the macOS memory reading.
devswha/ovis#3214: This change adds the proposed vm_stat memory estimate. The issue’s separate swap, GPU, and visibility-control requests are not covered.

The memory reporting change has no established production blocker. The macOS unit suite can fail when vm_stat is unavailable or times out; isolate that environment dependency and add deterministic failure-path coverage.

Test the vm_stat failure paths.
The Darwin test checks only a successful command. Add deterministic tests that assert realIo.memory() returns null when stdout is parseable but the process exits unsuccessfully, and when the stdout read rejects.

Make the macOS test independent of vm_stat availability.
If vm_stat fails or times out, realIo.memory() correctly returns null, but this test fails the unit suite. Use controlled command results for the success and failure tests, and reserve the live-host check for environments that require vm_stat to work.
