Closes #1671.

Change

With several PCs running agents, there was no way to tell which one is out of memory, out of disk or pinned at 100% CPU without SSHing in and running htop / df. Each connected, open PC in the sidebar now shows one compact line under its name with CPU %, memory % (not counting the file cache) and the fullest disk %. A figure at 85% or more turns red. Tap the line for memory used/total, load average, uptime and every disk.

The two requests from the issue are in:

  • Rebased on current main. The request is routed through server/dispatch.ts and the strings go in the split src/lib/i18n/machines.*.ts.
  • An on/off setting: Settings → Remote PCs → PC load in the sidebar. It is per device and not synced, because a phone's narrow sidebar may want it off while a desk keeps it. It is stored as pcLoad: boolean | null. null means not chosen yet, and then it is on while two or more PCs are connected (pcLoadOn in src/lib/settings.ts). A PC that is added but disconnected does not count. Once the switch is flipped, the choice holds whatever the roster does.

How it works:

  • A new read-only GET /api/system (server/system-stats.ts), proxied to remote PCs the same way as /api/agents (added to MACHINE_PROXY_PATH). It has the same access rules as its neighbours, and the bridge token may read it (GET only).
  • Nothing runs in the background. A reading is taken only when a browser asks. The sidebar asks every 5 s, and only while the PC's group is open, the PC is connected, the line is on and the tab is visible. The next ask starts after the last one comes back, with a 4 s timeout, so a stuck PC never has more than one request in flight.
  • Linux reads /proc. On other systems CPU, load and disks come from the OS. A figure a PC cannot measure shows as a dash, never 0%. macOS leaves memory out rather than show a number that counts the file cache as used. A disk that does not answer (a stuck mount) is left out after 1.5 s and is not asked again while that first read is still pending.
  • A PC whose bridge predates the route shows nothing until its bridge is updated: it answers 404, or 401/403 through the proxy.
  • Also included: ja/ko/zh strings, a demo-transport fixture, a DESIGN.md entry, a guide row, and changelog.d/pc-system-load.md.

Left out, as discussed in the issue: history, charts, alerts and network figures.

Validation

  • bun run check fast on the rebased branch (main at 0e68af5b): workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck and build pass. Unit tests: 12,255 pass, 4 fail, all in code this PR doesn't touch. server/claude-images.test.ts and server/omp-btw.test.ts (both same-size, same-mtime file rewrites) fail intermittently on unmodified main on the same machine too. server/codex-processes.test.ts and scripts/check.test.ts › slots failed only in the full parallel run; run alone, they pass 3 of 3 on both this branch and main.
  • New unit tests: server/system-stats.test.ts (memory not counting the file cache, CPU from two readings, one shared reading for asks that arrive together, null rather than 0 for what can't be measured, a stuck disk left out and not asked again), src/lib/system.test.ts, src/lib/systemReport.test.ts, and src/lib/settings.test.ts (the default rule: on with ≥2 connected PCs, a disconnected PC doesn't count, an explicit choice wins, the setting stays device-only and is not in SHARED_SETTING_KEYS). I checked that the settings test fails when the threshold is changed to 1.
  • Contract: server/api.contract.test.ts covers /api/system: 200 with cache-control: no-store, 401 without the token, 200 with it, 405 for a write. server/machines.test.ts checks that MACHINE_PROXY_PATH accepts system and rejects system/extra, systems, system?x=1 and ../system.
  • i18n: src/lib/i18n.test.ts passes with the new keys in ja/ko/zh.
  • Browser, against the demo build at 390 px and 1440 px: the line shows by default with two connected PCs, the switch is on, turning it off removes the line from every PC and stores pcLoad: false, and there are no page errors.
  • Live: in daily use with several connected Linux PCs whose bridges were updated. Each reports through /api/system, and the sidebar shows them on desktop and on a phone.
  • Not tested: macOS and Windows hosts.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional CPU, memory, and disk load meters for connected PCs in the sidebar. Expand the meters to view additional system details.
    • Added a setting under Settings → Remote PCs. By default, meters appear when two or more PCs are connected; you can change this preference on each device.
    • Load readings update while the page is visible and the PC is connected and expanded. Older PC bridges may need an update to provide readings.

The change adds a read-only system-report API and displays CPU, memory, and disk usage for eligible PCs in the sidebar. It adds a device-scoped setting, client polling and report formatting, demo data, translations, tests, and documentation.

Changes: PC load indicators

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 24777

The optional PC-load display can show misleading or stale figures, keep polling while hidden, and lose its saved preference after an older tab saves settings. Narrow layout and authentication-recovery issues also remain. These are bounded feature defects; merging requires owner awareness and planned corrections.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(sidebar): show each PC's CPU, memory and fullest disk, with an on/off setting" matches the main change: a per-PC load line in the sidebar (CPU, memory, fullest disk) plus a device setting to toggle it. It is specific and conveys the primary change. It is somewhat long at 82 characters, but it stays on topic.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The per-device pcLoad setting is one toggle in the existing Remote PCs page (PcLoadSetting in src/components/MachineStats.tsx, rendered by SettingsDialog.tsx). It controls display of the requested sidebar line. It is not a separate settings page with per-PC cards or charts, which the issue excludes. The objectives text calls the setting outside scope. This assessment finds a concrete connection, so the setting is not marked out of scope. The author says the setting and rebase came from requests on the issue. Those requests are not in the issue text provided, so this could not be checked.

Other changes support the feature: settings.ts and its tests (the pcLoad field and pcLoadOn), i18n strings in machines.*.ts and i18n.test.ts, site/demo/transport.ts fixture, DESIGN.md, docs/guide.md, changelog.d/pc-system-load.md, and server/index.ts wiring. No change was found that is unrelated to the issue. History, charts, alerts, and network figures are not present.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the linked issue, a detailed Change section, and a comprehensive Validation section. It lists checks, results, skipped platform testing, contract coverage, browser testing, and live testing.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #1671. Most coding requirements are implemented at the reviewed head (247777e):

  • Sidebar line with CPU %, memory % and fullest disk %, red at 85% (SYSTEM_HIGH_PERCENT, MachineStats.tsx). Tap reveals details.
  • Read-only GET /api/system routed in server/dispatch.ts, added to MACHINE_PROXY_PATH. The contract test covers 200, 401, and 405.
  • On-demand reads only. useSystemStats (src/lib/system.ts) polls every 5 s after each response, uses a 4 s timeout, and stops when hidden or folded. Requests do not overlap.
  • Linux memory uses /proc/meminfo MemTotal minus MemAvailable. Unmeasured values are null. macOS memory is null.
  • 404 and 405 mark a PC unavailable. 401 and 403 do so for remote PCs only.
  • Shared reads within 1.5 s and in-flight dedup (server/system-stats.ts).

Unmet requirement: #1671 says a disk that does not answer 'is left out after 1.5 s'. createSystemSampler (disks() via within(..., diskCapMs, () => lastDisks)) returns the previous disk list after the cap, not a list without the stuck disk. The test 'keeps the last disks while one read is late' codifies this. After the first successful read, a stuck mount keeps its last-known figures, and healthy disks in the same read also show stale values. Only a PC whose first disk read never answers shows no disks.

The PR description repeats the 'left out' claim, which the code does not do. Not verified: macOS and Windows hosts (declared untested in the PR and the issue). The Windows memory source (totalmem minus freemem) is not verified against the file-cache rule. The issue does not require a specific source on Windows, so this does not affect the verdict.

Resolution

In server/system-stats.ts, when DISK_CAP_MS passes, return only the disks whose read has completed in the current reading. Do not return lastDisks. Keep the pending-read dedup (diskRead), so a stuck mount is still not asked again. Update the test 'keeps the last disks while one read is late' to expect the stuck disk to be omitted and the completed disks to remain. Correct the PR description if the behavior changes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 27 functions across 25 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Cover bridge-token access to /api/system.

The test named "takes the bridge token too" sends the application token, not the bridge token. Its gated server also has no bridgeToken. As written, removing /api/system from the bridge path would leave every assertion passing. A regression that breaks bridge access to this route would not fail the suite.

Suggested fix

-    const gated = createServer({ port: 0, stateDir: dir, system: sampler, token: "system-test-token" });
+    const gated = createServer({ port: 0, stateDir: dir, system: sampler, token: "system-test-token", bridgeToken: "system-bridge-token" });
-      expect(withToken.status).toBe(200);
+      expect(withToken.status).toBe(200);
+      const viaBridge = await fetch(`http://localhost:${gated.port}/api/system`, { headers: { authorization: "Bearer system-bridge-token" } });
+      expect(viaBridge.status).toBe(200);

3-3: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Add regression tests for the useSystemStats polling lifecycle.

src/lib/system.test.ts tests only systemUnavailable. No test in the inspected src, server, shared, site, or scripts trees mounts or imports useSystemStats. These behaviors have no test:

  • The hook makes no request while enabled or visible is false.
  • The next request starts SYSTEM_POLL_MS (5000 ms) after the previous one returns or fails.
  • A request that runs past SYSTEM_ASK_TIMEOUT_MS (4000 ms) is aborted.
  • Cleanup aborts the open request and clears the pending timer.

A regression in any of these behaviors would not fail a test in the changed files. The repository already uses *.hook.test.ts files for hooks, such as src/lib/hiddenMachines.hook.test.ts. A hook test that mocks fetchSystem and usePageVisible and uses fake timers can cover these four behaviors.

Review comments at @server/system-stats.ts:
- Line 171: Update the disk sampling flow around `readDisks` and `disks()` so
each filesystem reading is published to the sampler as soon as it completes,
rather than waiting for the full list. Preserve the timeout behavior so a
stalled path is omitted without hiding completed readings from other paths.
- Line 171: Track the successful read time alongside the disk list returned by
disks(), and have take() avoid presenting entries older than the established
maximum age as current, either by hiding them or marking them stale. Keep
sampled_at distinct from the disk-read timestamp so a fresh report cannot make
stale disk values appear current.
- Around line 111-112: Replace the free-space-based `shape` deduplication around
`statfs` with a stable filesystem identity; on Linux, derive that identity from
the mount source device in `/proc/self/mountinfo` so btrfs subvolumes on the
same filesystem are treated as one pool. Preserve the existing `devices` check
and avoid relying on mutable free-space counters for deduplication.
- Line 63: Update the CPU total calculation in cpuTimesOf to include the Linux
iowait delta from /proc/stat in the non-busy denominator; do not rely on the
os.cpus() times object to provide iowait. Establish a safe way to associate the
iowait samples with the existing CPU samples, and preserve current behavior on
platforms where this counter is unavailable.

Review comments at @src/components/MachineSidebar.tsx:
- Line 358: Update the MachineStats rendering or polling flow in MachineSidebar
so polling runs only when the PC’s group and PCs list are visible and the mobile
drawer is open. Use the existing visibility state for these UI regions, and
ensure polling pauses when any is hidden and resumes when all are visible; do
not rely solely on document visibility.

Review comments at @src/components/MachineStats.css:
- Around line 35-43: Update the .stats-meter layout so labels and values remain
readable without overlapping neighboring meters at a 240px sidebar width and a
narrow phone drawer width. Choose a compact arrangement, such as stacking each
label above its value, and verify the labels still fit while keeping all
readings visible.

Review comments at @src/components/MachineStats.tsx:
- Line 12: Update the high() threshold check in MachineStats so it compares
Math.round(percent) with SYSTEM_HIGH_PERCENT, keeping the existing null handling
and class result unchanged.
- Around line 79-80: Update the Memory meter rendering in MachineStats so it
remains visible when report.memory is null and displays the existing
unmeasurable-value dash, while preserving the measured percentage when
available. Also update the spoken Memory summary so a null report.memory is
announced as “Not measured” rather than omitting the label.

Review comments at @src/lib/settings.ts:
- Around line 92-94: Update settings persistence for pcLoad so saveSettings
excludes it from the shared ovis:settings record and writes it to a dedicated
storage key, while loadSettings reads that key and preserves null for missing or
invalid values. Follow the existing sidebarFilter persistence pattern so
whole-record saves from older tabs cannot reset the pcLoad choice.

Review comments at @src/lib/system.ts:
- Line 58: Update the system-report flow so each report records when it arrived
on this device, and have MachineStats dim or label CPU, memory, and disk
readings once that arrival time is more than 60 seconds old. Preserve the last
report after a failed ask, but do not present its readings as current; follow
the age requirement documented by SystemReport.sampled_at.
- Line 20: Update the unavailable-state flow around the machineId and
error.status check so a later successful connection-server health or roster read
clears the corresponding useSystemStats missing latch. Keep the reset scoped to
that PC and preserve the existing behavior for other machines.

Thank you @thefahien for this, and for writing it up so carefully (the issue, the screenshots and the tests made the review quick). We pushed a few fixes onto your branch instead of asking you for another round; your two commits are untouched, ours sit on top after a merge of current main.

What we changed

  • herdr-core machines no longer show this PC's load. A herdr-core machine's server runs on the PC that reaches it (server/herdr-core/machine-bridge.ts), so its /api/system was answering with the connecting PC's CPU, memory and disks under the other machine's name. That server now has no sampler and answers 404 system_unavailable (the same answer as a bridge without the route), and the sidebar does not ask an hc machine at all.
  • A stuck disk read no longer collects a handler per ask, nor hides the other disk. Each ask re-raced the same pending statfs and left one callback on it, and one stuck path (say a network mount under home) held back the root too. Now each path is read on its own: a path that does not answer is left out after 1.5 s and not asked again until it does, the other path is shown as read now, and the sampler's own fallback to the last disks ends after 60 s instead of being sent under a fresh sampled_at forever.
  • No polling while the sidebar is out of view. The meters now ask only while the sidebar is shown (a wide window's list not hidden, a phone's drawer open), the PCs section is open and the PC is not filtered out. Before, a phone kept asking every PC every 5 s with the drawer closed.
  • Old readings are not shown as current. A reading that no ask has renewed for 60 s is dropped (also when the sidebar comes back after a while), so a PC that stops answering loses its line instead of keeping its last figures.
  • pcLoad lives in its own storage key (ovis:pc-load), like the sidebar filter, so an older tab's whole-record save cannot reset the choice.
  • The bridge token opens /api/system for GET only, and the contract test now actually uses a bridge token.
  • Red follows the figure as shown: 84.6 reads "85%" and is now red.
  • The meters fit the narrowest sidebar (240 px): a percent that does not fit beside its label goes under it, the bars stay on one line, and a label is cut rather than drawn over its neighbour.
  • The disk test's fixed Bun.sleep(5) is replaced by awaiting the released promise.
  • New browser regression scripts/pc-load-demo-regression.ts (in ci-browser.sh): on by default with several connected PCs, red from 85%, none for a herdr-core machine, no ask while the drawer or list is hidden (checked on Playwright's clock, no waiting), off in Settings in its own key, and the meters fit at 240 px, light and dark. We checked that it fails without the visibility fix and without the CSS fix.

Review threads left as they are

  • iowait in the CPU denominator: os.cpus() has no iowait; the file header already names this limit. Reading /proc/stat directly can come later if it matters in practice.
  • btrfs dedup by mount source: only the root and home folder are read, so the worst case is the same pool listed twice when free space changes between two statfs calls.
  • Memory meter on macOS: it is left out on purpose (macOS os counts the file cache as used), rather than a permanent dash.
  • Clearing the 404 latch on reconnect: the latch is keyed by state, boot id and version, so a reconnect or bridge update already clears it.

The third PC in the fixture, "Lab", is a herdr-core machine, so it has no line (the Agents list covers it in the desktop shots).

Validation

  • bun run check fast at ec48f825 (contains current main): workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build and unit tests all pass.
  • New tests fail on main before the change (server/system-stats.test.ts cannot import its module; the MACHINE_PROXY_PATH boundary test rejects system). scripts/pc-load-demo-regression.ts fails with the sidebar visibility fix reverted ("no PC is asked while the drawer is closed") and with the old CSS at a 240 px sidebar ("the meters fit").
  • 24 browser scripts that cover the sidebar, Settings and the PC roster passed in the CI runner image (24/24, 6 workers), including pc-load-demo-regression, hide-pc-demo-regression, sidebar-*, settings-pages-demo-regression and ui-regression; pc-load-demo-regression passed again on the final head.
  • Supply chain: no new dependency, lockfile, install script, network call or eval in the diff.

Thanks @thefahien - this is in. We added four commits on your branch, keeping you as the author: herdr-core machines no longer show the connecting PC's load (they are skipped), each disk path is read on its own so a stuck read cannot pile up handlers or hide the other disk, polling stops while the sidebar or drawer is hidden, and readings older than 60 s are dropped.

Local merge gate (owner-approved): external PR reviewed strictly (Codex Terra xhigh two rounds, CLEAR; omo CLEAR at this head), supply chain clean, the new tests fail on main, 24 sidebar/settings browser scripts pass in the CI runner image, bun run check fast passed, the Windows terminal QA workflow passed at this head, threads resolved. Default as agreed in #1671: shown when two or more PCs are connected. Closes #1671.
