feat(account): confirm a device's removal on every PC (experimental, off by default) - #3208
Removing a device from the account now shows, PC by PC, whether each PC reports it removed, and the device that removed it brings the removal to every PC it connects to until each one has it. The account service can still hide a mailbox record; a removal now reaches a PC the first time the removing device connects there anyway.
All client behaviour is experimental and off by default: Settings → Experimental → Account: confirm removals on every PC. With it off, removals and enrollments behave exactly as on main (a test pins that).
Contract: docs/account.md → Removing a device.
With the setting on
Carrying. A removal this device signs is kept, with the PCs it must reach (the account's directory plus every PC this device is paired with; a PC leaves the list only through Forget this PC), before it is sent anywhere; it then goes to the PC in view, while the mailboxes are posted at the same time, each with a 10 s deadline. On every connection to a PC of the account, the device sends that PC each removal it signed that the PC does not report removed.
Only its own removals. A removal signed by any other key (even a device this one approved) is never carried, never blocks anything and never feeds a cascade: a stolen former key or a lying PC cannot make clients spread it. The Devices list shows such removals from the PC in view with Remove everywhere, which signs a new removal with this device's key after a second tap. An enrollment sends other signers' kept removals only as held keys.
Per-PC report, the PC's own word, read again on each connection: removed / paired again there / waiting for its signer / could not confirm / update Ovis there / not reached yet.
Re-admission. While this device carries a removal it declines that key's join on any PC, signs no add for it, and drops a queued add for it.
Lost or stolen. An opt-in checkbox when disconnecting lists the devices the removed one added (signed adds on the PC in view, checked; rows the PC only claims are listed apart and unticked). The person picks; nothing is removed later by itself.
Bounded. At most 4096 tracked removals; past that no removal is signed until the person clears the settled ones (only removals every PC reports removed are cleared, with a note that later PCs then get them only from PCs holding them).
On the PC (always on)
GET /api/account/status adds two fields: tombstones (the keys this PC removed and has no row for) and paired_here (keys of rows paired on this PC itself, never moved onto their key by a link). Both are additive: no record outcome, gate or other field changes, and a client that does not read them is unaffected. Older PCs without them show as "update Ovis there to confirm". A PC is called "paired again" only when the carried removal answered unchanged and paired_here lists the key; unchanged alone is "could not confirm".
Not in this PR
A PC-side rule that answers an old remove from a former member unchanged instead of letting it wait (it changes record outcomes for every client, so it does not belong behind a client setting). Kept on a local branch (fix/account-settle-old-removes) for a follow-up PR, with a pre-existing HIGH on main tracked in Account remove leaves a key admitted when a link moved a local row onto it #3210: removeAccountKey treats a row a link moved onto a key as a pairing of that key. This PR's client does not call that case "paired again".
Design follows
WhatsApp's linked devices and Tailscale's Tailnet Lock (an existing device signs, the server only carries), and Tailscale's per-node state in its admin list for the per-PC report. Ideas only were taken from another project's per-member acknowledgement design; no code.
Reviews
Design: 5 Codex (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh) rounds before code. Round 1 removed a server-side ledger (PC-reported signer trust, directory-only completion, ledger eviction). Later rounds narrowed what a client carries (own removals only), made the PC list durable, and added the stated limits in "What this does not protect against".
Code: Codex (xhigh) on this branch: 4 HIGH, 3 MEDIUM. Fixed here: declining/adding/resending a carried key; a failing PC in view no longer stops the other mailboxes; the removal and its record for later PCs are one IndexedDB write; "paired again" is never cleared as settled; Forget this PC now removes the PC from every removal and the directory does not add it back; Remove everywhere for other devices' removals. Deferred to the follow-up: the link case above (pre-existing on main).
Validation
bun run check fast: green (typecheck, build, unit 12821 pass).
Failing-first: the new carry/report tests failed before the code; the 4 fix tests fail when each fix is reverted (mutation-checked).
bun test server/account src/lib/account src/components src/lib/relay src/lib/i18n.test.ts src/lib/settings: 920 pass. The account tests run real PCs (relay fixture, isolated state dirs, port 0) with the in-memory account service.
Settings → Experimental row captured on the demo build at 390 and 1280 (no live session).
Not run: browser regressions (no shared component touched: DevicesPanel and the account screens only), Windows/macOS jobs.
… waiting
Adds the 'Removing a device' contract (per-PC acknowledgement read from each PC,
removals carried by the client that signed them, lost-or-stolen candidate list).
On the PC: /api/account/status lists 'tombstones'; a remove from a signer who is
no member here is answered unchanged when the key was removed (by the account)
or paired on this PC after it was signed, and a waiting one settled that way no
longer holds its key.
The device that removed another one keeps the removal with the PCs it must reach
(directory and pairings), brings it to each PC on every connection, and shows
what each PC reports (removed, paired again, waiting, could not confirm, update
needed, not reached). Only removals it signed itself are carried; an enrollment
now sends other signers' removals as held keys only. Removing a lost or stolen
device offers the devices it added (from signed adds; rows the PC only claims are
listed apart, unticked).
…view fixes
Settings > Experimental > 'Account: confirm removals on every PC' (default off)
turns on tracking, carrying, per-PC reports, lost-or-stolen and Remove everywhere;
off, removals and enrollments behave as before. The PC's settling of old removes
moves to a follow-up; only the additive status 'tombstones' stays on the PC.
Review fixes: a carried key is declined, gets no add and no resent add; a PC in
view that fails no longer stops the other mailboxes; the removal and its record
for later PCs are one write; 'paired again' is never cleared as settled; Forget
this PC takes it off every removal; Remove everywhere for other devices' removals.
Added an experimental, off-by-default setting to track device removals and their confirmation status across PCs.
Added controls to review removal progress, clear completed records, and select devices added by a lost or stolen device for removal.
Pairing requests from devices already removed from an account may now be declined, with guidance to pair directly on a PC.
Added a warning when leaving an account with removals still awaiting confirmation.
This pull request adds an experimental, default-off account-removal reporting option. Enabled clients track and propagate their own signed removals to account PCs, display per-PC outcomes, and offer controls for lost-device recovery and removal status.

Summary
Account status and enrollment server/devices.ts, server/account/*, src/lib/account/join.ts, src/lib/account/join.test.ts, docs/account.md
The account status response includes tombstones and keys paired directly on the PC. Enrollment can send only removals signed by the enrolling device and hold keys removed by other signers.
Removal tracking and delivery src/lib/account/removals.ts, src/lib/account/leave.ts, src/lib/account/store.ts, src/lib/account/join.test.ts, docs/account.md, changelog.d/*
The account store tracks signed removals and per-PC reports. The removal flow sends records to listed PCs and records outcomes. The documentation and tests cover reporting states, delivery, tracking limits, and caveats.
Join and relay integration src/lib/account/join.ts, src/lib/relay/*, src/components/AccountApprovals.tsx
The relay records account PCs and carries signed removals after enrollment. Join and admission paths can refuse keys that carry a tracked removal.
Removal controls and settings src/components/AccountRemovals.tsx, src/components/DevicesPanel.tsx, src/components/AccountPcs.tsx, src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx, src/lib/settings.ts, src/lib/i18n*
The UI adds the reporting setting, per-PC removal status, lost-device candidate selection, and translated messages. The setting defaults to off and is device-scoped.
devswha/ovis#3210 — This change uses paired_here when determining whether a removal was repaired. The issue’s PC-side removal fix remains separate.

Off means main: the tracked-removal checks on adds and queued adds apply only
with the setting on, the 'Sent to' notice and the old write order are back.
On: mailboxes go before the PC in view (a PC that never answers holds none
back); a PC list that cannot be read still keeps and sends the removal, never
called done until a read; the add check runs again right before signing and an
enrollment holds every carried key and drops adds a removed key signed; carrying
runs on a linking connection too, after the enrollment step, with its own error
handling, and does not resend to a PC that answered paired again or cannot
report; a forgotten PC is not brought back by a carry under way; queued adds
check the account first; Remove everywhere is offered only for signed removals;
Clear settled follows the rule it clears by.
The changelog fragment names the setting and no longer lists the PC-side rule
that moved to a follow-up. The PC in view is never named as not reached after it
applied the removal, and the device lists are read again after a removal that
failed part of the way. A stray comment goes.
Reviewers: Codex (gpt-6.1-terra, xhigh) three code rounds, and the omo review (dori review) twice. CodeRabbit's review limit was reached on this PR, so these stand in for it.
Fixed in this PR
Approving, adding or resending an add for a key this device carries a removal of is refused (setting on only).
With the setting off, removals and enrollments are as on main: the tracked-removal checks apply only with it on, the "Sent to" notice and the old write order are back (test: "with removal reports off, ...").
Mailboxes go out before the PC in view is asked, so a PC that fails or never answers holds none back (tests with a throwing and a never-answering PC).
A directory that cannot be read still keeps and sends the removal to the paired PCs and the PC in view; it is never called done until a read adds the account's PCs.
The removal and the record a later PC gets are one IndexedDB write.
The add check runs again right before signing; an enrollment holds every carried key and drops adds a removed key signed.
Carrying runs on a linking connection too, after the enrollment step, with its own error handling, and is not resent to a PC that answered "paired again" or cannot report.
Forget this PC takes the PC off every removal, the directory does not add it back, and a carry under way does not bring it back.
"Paired again" is never cleared as settled; Clear settled follows the rule it clears by.
Remove everywhere is offered only for signed removals, not for keys a PC merely lists in blocked (a PC's word).
Queued adds check the account first.
The changelog says experimental, off by default, and no longer lists the PC-side rule.
Deferred (follow-up PR, branch fix/account-settle-old-removes, not pushed yet)
PC-side: an old remove from a signer who is no member any more waits forever and keeps holding its key, even after the key is removed again or paired on the PC. The fix changes record outcomes for every client, so it does not go behind a client setting.
Pre-existing on main: removeAccountKey treats a row a link moved onto a key as a local pairing of that key (Codex HIGH, traced, not reproduced). It also makes the "paired again" report possible for such a row.
Accepted as stated limits (docs/account.md, "What this does not protect against")
A PC's report is its word; "paired again" is a provisional read of unchanged plus the status (Codex reproduced it with a mocked status that has no row evidence).
An approval sent to PC X before another tab signs the removal is not undone; only the add for the other PCs is refused.
If reading this device's own pairings fails before the removal is kept, the disconnect fails as a whole and nothing has left the device; the person tries again.
Forget this PC edits the tracked removals even with the setting off; they are not read while it is off.
tombstones is always in /api/account/status (approved): additive, no outcome or gate changes.
Not done (LOW)
Component tests for the lost-or-stolen checkbox, the candidate list and Remove everywhere in DevicesPanel; the library under them is tested.
approveJoin's carried option is tested in the library; the screen does the same check inline before calling it.
Carrying resends removals a PC keeps waiting on every connection (at most 4096, 32 per request).
…needs a row
Tracked removals go to the PC in view right after they are kept, with the
mailboxes posted at the same time, each with a 10 s deadline, so an account
service that never answers no longer holds the screen. The status adds
paired_here (rows paired on the PC itself, never moved by a link), and a client
calls a PC 'paired again' only when it lists the key; unchanged alone is
'could not confirm'. Pre-existing link case: #3210.
Fixed. With removal reports on, the removal goes to the PC in view right after it is kept; the mailboxes are posted at the same time, each with a 10 s deadline, and the disconnect finishes when the account service never answers (failing-first test with a postRecord that never resolves: the PC in view still gets its call and removes the device).
Fixed. "Paired again" now needs row evidence: the status adds paired_here (rows paired on the PC itself, never moved by a link), and unchanged without it is "could not confirm" (failing-first tests on the PC and the client).
Parked as a draft: the round cap is reached, and the merge pass reproduced HIGHs at 857fc79. It resumes after the 0.5 release, in one pass together with fix/account-settle-old-removes (#3210).
What works (Settings → Experimental → Account: confirm removals on every PC, off by default; off is main's behaviour): removals this device signs are kept and carried to every PC on each connection; per-PC reports (removed / paired again with paired_here evidence / waiting / could not confirm / update needed / not reached); a carried key is declined, gets no add and no resent add; Forget this PC; Clear settled; lost-or-stolen candidates from signed adds; Remove everywhere for other devices' signed removals. The PC adds only the additive status fields tombstones and paired_here.
HIGHsrc/lib/account/leave.ts:98: the tracked path awaits listPcs() with no timeout before trackRemoval and before posting to the PC in view, so a stalled directory read leaves the removed (possibly stolen) device active on the PC in view.
HIGH (pre-existing at 51ad113): with an empty directory and no saved pairing, the tracked PC list is empty even with hereId, so the report reads settled and clearable while the PC in view is still pending or refused.
MEDIUM: "paired again" states recorded at the previous head are never revalidated against paired_here.
Fix direction: post to the PC in view before or in parallel with the directory read, give the read the same deadline, and always include hereId in the removal's PC list until that PC confirms.

Show lost-device candidates after a partial removal.
If the PC list cannot be read, the removal can succeed on the PC in view but candidate discovery is skipped. The removed device’s row then disappears, so the user cannot repeat the lost-device flow there. Preserve the error and show candidates after partial removal.

Queue the removal when the directory recovers.
If the directory read fails, a PC not paired with this client receives no mailbox copy. The next directory read only adds a tracking row, despite the error promising delivery. That PC can retain the removed device until this client connects to it. Queue the tracked removal for newly discovered PCs.

Retry unconfirmed removals after the PC upgrades.
When an upgraded PC does not list the key in tombstones, the cached unconfirmed state prevents both delivery and a report update. The removed device can retain access, and the client continues asking for an upgrade. Retry the removal and refresh its report when tombstone support appears.

Remove the PC from tracked removals when Forget is selected.

What
Removing a device from the account now shows, PC by PC, whether each PC reports it removed, and the device that removed it brings the removal to every PC it connects to until each one has it.
Contract:
docs/account.md→ Removing a device.With the setting on
heldkeys.On the PC (always on)
GET /api/account/statusadds two fields:tombstones(the keys this PC removed and has no row for) andpaired_here(keys of rows paired on this PC itself, never moved onto their key by alink). Both are additive: no record outcome, gate or other field changes, and a client that does not read them is unaffected. Older PCs without them show as "update Ovis there to confirm". A PC is called "paired again" only when the carried removal answeredunchangedandpaired_herelists the key;unchangedalone is "could not confirm".Not in this PR
unchangedinstead of letting it wait (it changes record outcomes for every client, so it does not belong behind a client setting). Kept on a local branch (fix/account-settle-old-removes) for a follow-up PR, with a pre-existing HIGH on main tracked in Account remove leaves a key admitted when a link moved a local row onto it #3210:removeAccountKeytreats a row alinkmoved onto a key as a pairing of that key. This PR's client does not call that case "paired again".Design follows
WhatsApp's linked devices and Tailscale's Tailnet Lock (an existing device signs, the server only carries), and Tailscale's per-node state in its admin list for the per-PC report. Ideas only were taken from another project's per-member acknowledgement design; no code.
