test(herdr): refuse the user's own herdr and herdr-core to a process that names a test session - #3155
A standalone script that imported { useTestHerdr } from scripts/test-herdr.ts without using the binding had the import dropped by Bun's TypeScript transpiler (unused-import elision). test-herdr.ts never ran, HERDR_SOCKET was never set, and every call went to herdr's default socket: the user's own session. This happened during QA for the herdr -> herdr-core move work (throwaway workspaces were created and closed in the live session).
herdr's client now refuses its default socket (~/.config/herdr/herdr.sock, $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/herdr/herdr.sock, or the Windows APPDATA one) while HERDR_TEST_SESSION is set, with live_herdr_refused and a message saying how to import the helper for its effect. OVIS_ALLOW_LIVE_HERDR=1 (or the existing HERDR_TEST_LIVE=1) says the live session is meant. The check sits in socketAddress(), which every herdr connection goes through.
Validation
Failing first: server/herdr/live-guard.test.ts failed on main with connect_failed (the default socket is under a temp HOME, so nothing live is reached), passes with the guard.
bun test server/herdr/ against an isolated test session: 48 pass.
bun run check fast (on the heavy runner): ok, 12663 pass, 0 fail.
Review
omo: CLEAR at b3c19ac (the BLOCK at f75a8e1 named the missing hc guard, added in b3c19ac).
HOME changed after the socket was chosen: both the env HOME and the OS home's default socket are refused.
No herdr binary left the default socket in place: scripts/test-herdr.ts now points HERDR_SOCKET at a socket that does not exist (fail closed), as unit mode does.
herdr-core unguarded: spawnHcConnect refuses a core that is neither named by HC_SOCKET nor a non-default HC_SESSION while HERDR_TEST_SESSION is set.
Other spellings of the default socket (.., a linked folder, the Windows pipe prefix and case) are compared as one.
Test env: HERDR_TEST_LIVE and HC_* are cleared in the test, and the hc guard is tested too.
MEDIUM Chat paging with Codex backtracks #5 (a user who exports HERDR_TEST_SESSION in their own shell and then runs a production plugin on the default socket gets refused): not changed; HERDR_TEST_SESSION is a test-only variable, and the error says to set OVIS_ALLOW_LIVE_HERDR=1.

Bug Fixes
Test sessions are now prevented from connecting to the default live herdr and herdr-core endpoints unless live access is explicitly allowed. Configure an isolated socket or session to connect without enabling live access.
When the herdr executable is unavailable during testing, a test-specific socket is selected instead of leaving the existing socket unchanged.
The changes isolate herdr test sockets when the herdr binary is unavailable and add test-session checks that refuse connections to default live herdr and herdr-core endpoints.
Changes: Test-session live service guards
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Isolate herdr test socket and guard live endpoint scripts/test-herdr.ts, server/herdr/client.ts
When no herdr binary is found, the test helper sets HERDR_SOCKET to a nonexistent test socket. Herdr socket resolution checks whether the requested socket matches a default live socket and can refuse the connection.
Guard default herdr-core connections and test both guards server/herdr-core/connection.ts, server/herdr/live-guard.test.ts
spawnHcConnect refuses the default live core under the configured test-session conditions. Tests check default and explicitly configured endpoints, the live-access override, and environment cleanup.
devswha/ovis#2445: Both changes protect the core during tests. This PR guards spawnHcConnect; the candidate starts a real hc through its own spawn function.
devswha/ovis#2442: The candidate adds spawnHcConnect, which this PR updates to refuse default live-core connections during test sessions.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b3c19
Tests can still reach a user's live session through a Windows socket alias or an inherited default core socket. Close these isolation gaps before merging to prevent unintended changes to running sessions.

…ONFIG_HOME socket (#3176)
## Summary
With `HERDR_TEST_SESSION` set, the live-herdr guard (`refuseLiveHerdr`
in `server/herdr/client.ts`, added in #3155) counted the *current*
`$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/herdr/herdr.sock` as the user's own socket.
`server/remote-entry.test.ts` spawns the bridge with
`XDG_CONFIG_HOME=<temp>/config` and a fake herdr at that path, so "stops
a bridge it could not register" failed with `live_herdr_refused`
whenever `HERDR_TEST_SESSION` was set (CI does not set it, so CI stayed
green).
- `scripts/test-herdr.ts` (the `bun test` preload) records the
XDG_CONFIG_HOME the run started with in `OVIS_TEST_USER_XDG_CONFIG_HOME`
(empty when unset); children tests spawn inherit it.
- The guard refuses the socket under that recorded folder, not under an
XDG_CONFIG_HOME a test chose later. A process without the record (a
script that never ran the preload) still refuses its own
XDG_CONFIG_HOME, as before.
Inherited pane variables (`HERDR_SOCKET_PATH`, `HERDR_ENV`,
`HERDR_PANE_ID`, ...) were not the cause; `scripts/check.ts` already
strips them (`LIVE_HERDR`), so no preload scrub was added.
## Validation
- Failing-first: with origin/main's `client.ts` and `test-herdr.ts`,
`HERDR_TEST_SESSION=... bun test server/herdr/live-guard.test.ts
server/remote-entry.test.ts` gives 2 failures (the remote-entry test and
the new guard test); with this PR, 13 pass / 0 fail, both with
`HERDR_TEST_SESSION` + `HERDR_SOCKET_PATH=~/.config/herdr/herdr.sock`
set and with every `HERDR_*`/`HC_*` variable unset. Existing guard tests
(default socket and hc core refused) pass.
- `bun run check fast`: passed inside a herdr pane with
`HERDR_TEST_SESSION` set, and with every `HERDR_*`/`HC_*` variable unset
(12709 pass, 0 fail each).
- Skipped: full check, browser regressions (no UI change).
…#3161)
## Summary
Settings > About > Terminal offers **Move everything to herdr-core** on
a PC whose Ovis serves herdr's TUI, has herdr-core next to it, can
switch its runtime from Settings (Linux/macOS, started by Ovis's
launcher) and has no Herdr app installed. The whole herdr session moves,
or nothing does:
- Every workspace, tab, split (with its ratio) and name is rebuilt on
herdr-core. The split tree comes back from herdr's `split_<n>_<path>`
ids.
- An idle Claude Code whose input box reads empty is sent `/exit`
(through herdr's `agent.prompt`, as chat sends go) and reopens on
herdr-core on its conversation, through the resume commands Earlier
sessions already uses. Other agents' input lines cannot be read, and the
exit command would send whatever is typed there, so they wait for the
person to end them ("End it yourself"); once ended, the pane still names
the conversation and it reopens on herdr-core (`codex resume`,
`opencode/pi --session`, ...) with nothing typed. A Claude Code whose
conversation this PC's stores cannot confirm starts new in the same
folder; the preview says so.
- A shell with nothing in front starts again in the same folder.
Scrollback and programs running in a shell do not move (the preview says
so).
- Nothing moves while an agent works, waits for an answer, or has a
message Ovis still holds for it, or while a shell runs a command: the
move waits ("Move everything once all work is done") and goes by itself
once none is left, unless it is cancelled.
- herdr itself is never closed or changed. Any failure before the
launcher takes the switch rolls back: every herdr-core terminal the move
started (each labeled `ovis.move=<id>` in its first `terminal.run`) is
ended, then each agent ended in herdr restarts in its own pane on its
own conversation, unless the pane has an agent again, its shell is not
in front, or the conversation runs elsewhere (the result lists those).
- Each step is journaled (`runtime-move-<port>.json`, 0600) before it is
taken. A server that stops mid-move leaves it `interrupted`; nothing is
retried by itself. A switched move counts as done only once the launcher
keeps the herdr-core server.
- The building happens through a herdr-core adapter of the move's own,
on a socket in the state folder, while the server still serves herdr;
then the existing runtime switch restarts the server on herdr-core.
Docs: `docs/runtime-move.md`. Design notes and both review rounds were
done before code (Codex Terra 6.1 xhigh).
## Changes
- `shared/runtime-move.ts`: the wire contract (`GET/POST/DELETE
/api/runtime/move`).
- `server/runtime-move.ts` (planner), `server/runtime-move-run.ts`
(transaction + rollback + journal), `server/runtime-move-service.ts`
(wait loop, real herdr/herdr-core ports).
- `server/herdr-core/adapter.ts`: `pane.split` takes the new side's
`cwd`; create/split label terminals with a move id.
- `server/herdr/client.ts`: typed wrappers for the move (`move` param,
`paneSplitForMove`).
- `server/core/server-core.ts` + `server/pending-input.ts`:
`holdsPending` and `inputEmpty` for the plan.
- `server/dispatch.ts`: the route (driving owner only, `x-herdr-update`
on POST/DELETE); a runtime switch is refused while a move waits or runs.
- `src/components/RuntimeMove*.tsx`, `src/lib/runtimeMove.ts`, i18n
(en/ko/ja/zh), demo transport answer.
The UI follows the existing runtime switch row and ConfirmDialog
patterns (no other app does a runtime migration; the closest pattern is
the Codex app's "switch workspace" sheet, which also previews, confirms,
then restarts).
## Review
- CodeRabbit: review limit reached on this PR (rate-limited after the
first pushes); merged on omo + Codex reviews per the maintainer's rule,
and said so here.
- omo: three rounds; all findings fixed (exit sent via agent.prompt; a
finished move set aside back on herdr; reason/why texts; wait for an
ending agent's shell; bounded hc cleanup; unplaced pane; non-Claude
agents never typed into).
- Codex (Terra 6.1, xhigh): design reviewed twice before code, code
reviewed twice; fixed findings listed in the commits; what herdr cannot
offer is below.
## Known limits (from the adversarial review, not reproduced)
herdr has no lock or atomic "exit if idle" call, so these stay possible
and are named here instead of hidden:
- Another client (the herdr TUI, another browser) can type or start work
in the moment between Ovis's idle check and its one-write `/exit`. If
the agent then turns busy, nothing more is typed and the move rolls
back.
- An agent that leaves a child running in the background after its own
exit is not seen by herdr's foreground check.
- A herdr-core create call that times out but completes later could
leave one terminal after a rollback.
- A move a stopped server left (`interrupted`) is set aside (kept, not
deleted) when the person starts again; there is no one-click "restore in
herdr" yet.
## Validation
- `bun run check fast` (heavy runner): ok, 12675 pass, 0 fail.
- Unit: `server/runtime-move.test.ts`, `server/runtime-move-run.test.ts`
(all-or-nothing order, an agent that takes the exit as work, rollback
order, refused switch, conversation changed, shell-in-front,
interrupted/switching settle), `server/runtime-move-service.test.ts`,
`src/lib/runtimeMove.test.ts`.
- Contract, isolated herdr test session:
`server/runtime-move.contract.test.ts` (plan over HTTP with a fictional
Codex store, `plan_changed`, 401, Herdr app).
- Contract, isolated herdr + a real hc 0.1.17 in a core of its own
(`OVIS_TEST_HC_BIN`): `server/runtime-move-service.contract.test.ts`
(built, then everything ended when the switch is refused; built and kept
when it is taken; herdr left as it was).
- Manual run with a stand-in agent (a script named `claude`): exit
typed, ended, rebuilt on hc, agent started there, committed; and a
refused switch restarted the agent in its own herdr pane. (Those manual
runs reached the developer's own herdr session through an unused-import
bug in the QA script; #3155 guards against that.)
- Screens (demo build, light, 1280 and 390): preview, waiting, moving,
rolled back, settings row.
- Not run: the full flow with the real launcher restarting into
herdr-core (needs the supervisor); real agent CLIs.
