fix(chat): remember a letta seen outside its start folder by its stable start - #3093
Refs #2314 (the CodeRabbit follow-up from #2312 in its first comment). Does not close it.
What
lettaInStartFolder remembers letta processes it has seen outside the folder they started in, so one that moved and came back is never bound to its start folder's record again. It keyed that memory on processStartLowerBound, which is min(btime-based start, wall-clock-minus-uptime start) - 10 ms: the second reading follows the wall clock, so after the clock is stepped back it wins the min and differs between lookups. The same process then gets a new key, the memory misses, and the pane binds again (case 2 of #2314 without any server restart).
The key is now processStartIdentity (new in server/process-start.ts): on Linux the start in ticks after boot from /proc/<pid>/stat, which no clock change moves (/proc/stat's btime is getboottime64(), which follows clock_settime, so processStartedAt would move too; Codex review), and on macOS the kernel's stored start record. It also needs no /proc/stat. startedAt stays the lower bound for the record-age check, which needs it.
Binding Letta Chat from a reported fact still needs one that does not exist yet:
herdr 0.9.5 is still the latest release, and herdr main (ee5bfb5, 2026-10-29) still leaves herdr:letta out of session_report_allows_session_replacement, so a later /new / /resume report from the same process is ignored (the upstream fix d6ab6f7e has not landed).
herdr-core has no Letta integration.
Letta Code 0.34.41 (latest on npm) keeps no per-process record of its open conversation; the only pid-bearing lock naming a conversation is letta-enter.lock, written only by EnterWorktree.
Validation
Failing first: the new rows in server/letta.test.ts ("seen elsewhere") failed on main (Expected: false, Received: true) and pass with the change.
bun test server/letta.test.ts: 28 pass.
bun run check fast: ok (workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build, unit tests 12524 pass / 0 fail, actionlint)
Not run: full integration/browser suites (server-only change to one helper).
…le start
The moved-process memory was keyed on processStartLowerBound, whose wall-clock reading shifts after the clock is stepped back, so a letta that left its start folder could bind again. Key it on processStartedAt, the read that names the process. Refs #2314.

Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue where a Letta Code pane could switch from Terminal to Chat after the PC clock was corrected, even when Letta had been seen outside its starting folder. The pane now continues to show Terminal instead of displaying a conversation it may have left.
The Letta process record now includes a stable birth timestamp. The start-folder guard uses it with the PID to keep tracking a moved process when its lower-bound start time changes.

Summary
Process identity and moved-process tracking server/letta-store.ts, server/letta.test.ts, changelog.d/letta-moved-process-identity.md
paneLettaProcess reads the stable process start timestamp and includes it as birth. lettaInStartFolder tracks moved processes by PID and birth. Tests check rejection after folder changes, including when startedAt is earlier than the current test time. The changelog describes the clock-correction scenario.
devswha/ovis#2314: This change updates the folder-move guard involved in preventing a pane from binding to the wrong conversation.
devswha/ovis#1730: This change addresses a narrow safeguard that can prevent a Letta Code pane from binding to its session in Chat after a folder move and clock correction.
Possibly related PRs
devswha/ovis#2312: It introduced lettaInStartFolder, which this change updates to track processes by PID and birth timestamp.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 0a639
The change remains vulnerable to clock corrections and introduces narrow cases where an otherwise valid Letta Chat falls back to Terminal. Mergeability risk is low, with these limitations requiring owner awareness or follow-up.

Test the age cutoff with distinct timestamps.
The current fixture cannot detect use of birth instead of startedAt for the age check.
Add an age-cutoff case
for (const at of [now - 1_999, now - 999, now, now + 1, now + 2_000, now + 600_000]) {
owner = setup(settingsAfterNew, at, now);
expect(lettaTranscriptFor(reported(owner.cwd), [reported(owner.cwd)], owner)).toBeNull();

Update the age-cutoff test fixture in the relevant test case so `birth` and
`startedAt` have distinct timestamps, then assert the transcript result follows
the `startedAt` cutoff rather than passing because `birth` matches it. Use the
existing `setup` and `lettaTranscriptFor` helpers and keep the change limited to
this age-cutoff coverage.

Test PID reuse with a different birth.
The new assertions also pass if lettaInStartFolder keys moved processes only by PID. Add a successor with the same PID and a different birth to check that it remains eligible.

Add an assertion in the `lettaInStartFolder` test for a successor process that
reuses PID 106 with a birth time different from the original; verify it remains
eligible. Preserve the existing assertions and use the test’s established
process fixture pattern.

Review comments at @server/letta-store.ts:
- Line 190: Update the move-recording flow around processStartedAt(pid) so the
CWD and process data are verified to belong to the same process generation
before recording a move. If the generation changes between reads, do not record
the move using mismatched predecessor and successor data.
- Line 170: Update the process key used to look up moved history so it uses a
clock-independent identity for the process instead of owner.birth. Reuse an
established stable identity that distinguishes PID reuse, ensuring the same
process still matches its moved history after clock corrections; do not assume
PID alone is sufficient.
- Around line 190-192: Update the owner-resolution check around processStartedAt
so a failed birth-time read does not reject an otherwise valid Chat when
startedAt and env are available. Preserve moved-process tracking using a safe
identity check that does not depend solely on birth; establish that check before
accepting the owner, rather than bypassing process-movement validation.

Codex (Terra, xhigh) HIGH: processStartedAt is not stable either, since /proc/stat's btime is getboottime64() and follows a clock set later. Accepted from the kernel source (not stepped on a real host clock here). Fixed: the key is now processStartIdentity, Linux's raw start ticks from /proc/<pid>/stat (macOS: the kernel's stored start).
Codex MEDIUM: requiring processStartedAt made Linux without a readable /proc/stat fall back to Terminal. Fixed by the same change: the identity reads only /proc/<pid>/stat.
Validation after the fix: bun test server/letta.test.ts server/process-start.test.ts 34 pass; bun run check fast ok (unit 12524 pass, 0 fail).
Codex re-review of the fix: no HIGH/MEDIUM. LOW (left as is): the "seen elsewhere" test passes a fixed identity and so does not exercise processStartIdentity itself; the real-process Letta test does go through paneLettaProcess, and a clock step cannot be simulated in a unit test.
Local merge gate (owner-approved): origin/main merged (no conflict), bun run check fast passed at this head (12543/0), letta + process-start tests 34/0, omo CLEAR at this head (Codex Terra xhigh: round-1 HIGH and MEDIUM fixed, round 2 only a LOW), threads resolved, merges cleanly; the new test fails on main. The seen-elsewhere key is now the kernel's process start record, not a clock-derived lower bound. Part of #2314 (the main fix waits for herdr to report Letta sessions). Merged without waiting for GitHub CI.
